Apple :: External Snow Screen
Apr 4, 2009
I just woke up macbook from sleep and the external screen appeared to be some kinds of TV snow screen, you know, those from the TV screen when there is no signal It was fun to watch, but concerned me a bit. The macbook screen was fine since 'snow' only appeared on the external screen. The external monitor was returned normal after I switch it off then turned it on again. It is a Samsung 2233BW monitor, and I connect it to macbook and set it as the lower part of the whole display. What could cause this problem? The mac or the external monitor itself?

I popped in the disc and selected Install. Well it starts installing and I go downstairs for about 15. When I come back up, the screen is off but the disc is still spinning. It's been going on like this for about 20 minutes now.
Is the screen suppose to go blank while installation occurs?
This is installing on a fresh new Macbook pro 13.

1) Bluish tint - anyone else experiencing this?
I tried calibrating my profile so that it'd look a little better but does anyone know whether there are better programs to do this as opposed to by eye? (And are there software other than Apple's own?)
2 Those with the 9CC2 screen - is it just me or has the brightness range narrowed a lot? It seems like at the lowest brightness setting it's still damn bright (and not good for the battery), and Leopard didn't seem to have the same problem.

I finally upgraded to snow leopard and noticed that when I zoom into the screen, I can't move the zoomed-in portion of the screen around like I did in Leopard. Is there a way to enable movement?

Im currently interested in both the 13" and 15" MBP. The laptop will be my primary computer until I really need more processing power in which case I will get an i7 desktop. Now the question is will the 13"s 9400m run a samsung t260 (full HD, hdmi port, dvi) at its full resolution. If its not possible then I guess I will get the 15" with dedicated vram and gpu. Obviously I dont want the laptop to run games on full HD. Just video, photoshop and some other apps.

Just a heads up. The New OSX has removed the ability to Archive & Install and the Erase and Install option.
Also included in the optional Installs is QuickTime 7 and Rosetta. Also:
- OSX has also added a Software "incompatibility check" during the general Installation of OSX 10.6. Within the installer there is an List with Software Exclusions. With this list any known third party applications will automatically get disabled during the start up.
- The Exclusions lists also Applies to Migration assistant.

Why would anyone get excited for snow leopard when the "speed" and "space" can be had with snow leopard. In some reviews I found the space freed up is almost equal to that of snow leopard.

this is my first foray into 4GB in OS X. Just to appease my TypeA twists, could someone please comment for me?
Upgraded my uMB to 4GB last night and System Memory in OS X Activity Monitor (Utilities folder) shows 3.75GB available. I'm not freaked out about this, just wanting to check my curiosity.
Now the About This Mac pop-up window shows 4GB installed so I'm thinking the difference may have to do with OS memory addresses and such which is why you end up with memory recognition in 32bit windows systems, but I'm hoping for confirmation from others that I'm not missing something. The other possibility I considered for the difference is just simply the 1024bit vs 1000bit thing that you end up with in HDD sizing (and that would actually match nicely with the conversion @ ~3.73GB ).

My upgrade to Snow leopard from Leopard went without incident, and everything works great except for Quicktime.
If I want to watch a WMV file, I get an error message indicating that Quicktime must be installed first to proceed.
The question is this. Can I install Quicktime alone from the Upgrade disk?
I tried the newest version downloaded from Apple's website, however it gives an error upon installation that indicates that the version is incompatible with Snow Leopard. I guess Apple has not updated their download website.

I was just at my MAC class & the guy tells me that Snow Leopard is much faster & i should think about up-grading & that it only cost $30.00, But he also said its not for everybody.
Depends on what you do with your LapTop?

Double-clicking files in the Finder under Snow Leopard launches applications associated with the types of the files regardless of which applications used to create those files. I like it but I can see why those users who have been using Mac for 2 decades hate it. Other than that it forces one to adopt a new habit, I think it makes sense both conceptually and practically to ignore creator codes for most users.

I recently noticed that my firefox finds a reason to crash on its whim most often than it was during the pre snow leopard era. Any one knows the reason why it does or how I can pin point the problem it happens next time?

i'm using snow leopard. and i was just wondering what command open's up a new terminal window, typing bash or sh would only create a bash or sh session within the same terminal window. Yes i know i can just press command+n or go to the menu and shell->new window. but i'm looking for a typed-out command to do this. Example would be in ubuntu, you would type gnome-terminal in any terminal, and a new terminal window would pop up.

Does anyone know if you will finally be able to hide or disable the dock in Snow Leopard? I mean hide as in, it doesn't pop up if you're mouse is in that area of the screen.

I installed snow leopard onto an external USB harddrive, just to test it out with my computer (macbook pro, 17-inch, not sure which year it's from, I've had it since 2007)
I ran into a major issue, the trackpad response is extremely sluggish (about a 1-second delay between the movement on the trackpad and the movement on the screen)
Interestingly enough, when I boot snow leopard on my friend's laptop (macbook pro, 15-inch, also from 2007), the trackpad responds just fine.

when will apple be doing the summer update of their macbooks? they usually do this by offering a better processor, hard drive, ram during june/july/august time. they also offer free ipod/itouch around august to get rid of old stock dont they? and the laptops are cheaper. and will snow leopard be out in the next month or two with the macbook updates? I want to buy a macbook pro but i dont mind waiting till its cheaper or has new stuff.

3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM3 - 2x2GB
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
I'm wondering if it's compatible with Snow Leopard?
