First off, I don't actually own a Mac, nor have I owned one since like '92, so I don't know much about them at all. Two of my friends have the new 15' pros though. Today, we installed XP on both of them, and I decided to download SpeedFan and check the temps on one of the laptops. I can't remember exactly what they were, but I believe I saw GPU at 70, and the cores at like 69 and 65. This was after idling for about 5 hours, and these are higher than what I'd have on my gateway if I were gaming for twice that long.
The one who's temps I checked wasn't on a cooling pad, and it had spent some time on the carpet. Of course, I don't really know if that matters. From what I can tell, it's exhaust vent is right under the screen on the back, and it's intake is god knows where. To be honest, I'm surprised it hasn't exploded yet. And this is with all the windows drivers from the disc that had "everything else" on it, so I'm assuming it's regulating its fans and power correctly. So is this normal, or should I be worried? It really doesn't seem normal to me.
I've been playing WoW since I bought my mac 2 weeks now (not straight) and so trying to decide if I should sell my PC or not. But I'm concerned on the temps on the macbook, while playing it hits 80-83C fans are on cools a little but mostly stays in that temp range.
My question is are these temps normal while playing or are they high and I should have it looked at?
I know that the mbp can get hot when doing some heavy computing, however I was playing a simple online game the other night called plants VS zombies, check it out if you don't know it. Anyways after playing for only a few minutes I noticed that my macbook was getting very warm, and after about 15 minutes of playing it the underside of it was hot to the touch and the topside(keyboard) part of it was quite warm and I could feel the heat radiating off of it. I haven't even had it for a week yet but have done quite a few things including watching movies both on a HD and from a DVD. I have had multiple browser sessions open with wireless on music playing in I itunes etc. And I have played around with some other settings etc. Nothing else I have done on the computer has made any part of it warm to the touch, but this simple online game made it to hot to sit on my lap, and very hot to the touch and has me worried something might be wrong with it, I would hate to play a more demanding game, or do some video editing etc..which is one of the reasons I bought this computer over a PC in the first place. I still have 10 days or so to return it for a full refund or else exchange it for another I have tried restarting the system a few times and playing the game again and the temps shot right up again.
I have had this laptop 2 days and today its doing all sorts of strange things. Several times it has gone black screen (not shutdown, just like it had the battery yanked out and lost power). I had one message that there was a problem and windows had to shutdown and gave an error like 0xa0000001 or something.
But even before i had this i was worried. Some of the first things i did was install some benchmark programs. speccy, cpuid, gpu-z. cpuid doesn't show the temps, but speccy showed the cpu cores all running at 80-90 just with windows sitting doing nothing. it highlights anything over 80 as red. gpu-z shows the dual graphics with similar but about 5 degrees lower temps and shows the amd radeon hd 8670M card as far lower temps. a fan inside seems to be on and when temps get above 95 seems to go into high gear. but i have seen speccy showing temps of 106 C!
i think this is what is causing the laptop to blackout and restart; temps going over 105 for any time at all. in short it runs windows, with occasionally even with psu plugged in dimming of the laptop screen. but try and run something, such as an internet connection, plugging anything into usb ports that is powered from the laptop, or browsing the web - not even watching video or streaming just google search! - and the temps jump up to mid 90s or higher.
Just lookin' over the spec's on the new iphone and I noticed that the headphones now support volume control. I didn't see this fact listed before anywhere else or during the keynote... Its about time apple! The only major downside is that they are not enabling the feature on the 3G iphone. [url]
well last night and this morning i was busy making my self a home made cooling pad, with some crap laying around the house. I don't know if there is already one but i'll put this one up. I will upload pictures tomorrow. The total project was about 1 hour and cost less than $10. It also has a speed control which is cool (it is built on my ac/dc adapter so you will make yours). My mother-tongue is not English but French, so excuse the words i might use or not use. Also their are some tools i couldn't translate the name, but when pics are up I'm sure you will know..................
if anyone can recommend a firewall application that controls both the incoming and the outgoing traffic. The built in firewall protects from incoming request, but I'd like to control the outgoing connections as well. I did a search and found 1 thread, but it's more than a year old.
Little Snitch and WaterRoof (and its simpler version NoobProof) seem to fit the bill. Any recommendation besides these?
I was using I8KFanGui for a long long time to control the fans and it was doing a fine job. But it sort of stopped working after I installed Windows 7 RC2 as it can only force both the fans to run at high speed.
The manual option to run the fans at low speed at all times and automatic settings don't work anymore.
I tried speedfan too but the option to turn on Dell settings is not working either. The fans turn on only after the CPU goes above 65C or so.
So, wondering if anyone else using Win7 on this laptop and able to control the fans. BTW, there are absolutely no other problems and it runs smoother than the XP days .....
I contact you because I bought a Dell Studio 1735 a while ago and since I dont like Windows Vista I changed the OS to XP. Reading this forum I managed to make everything work, Wifi, TouchPad, Video, Sound which was a Sound Blaster Audigy not the one that comes in the Std Studio model and everything else BUT the remote control.
I installed the drivers for the IR port from [url]and it says the device is working properly, yet the remote is not functional.
Has anyone been able to make the device work under XP?
I Have a HP DV6T QUAD and reinstalled Windows 7. When I touch the volume on my keyboard to increase or decrease the volume, it would appear on the screen for 1 second. Now after reinstalling, it doesn't show on the screen anymore when I touch the volume increase decrease on my laptop.
Product Name: HP Pavilion DV7-1261wm Product Number: NM295UA#ABA OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
My computer gets all current HP/Microsoft updates automatically. My volume control moves up and down automatically. I can choose mute and it will not stay muted. I have turned off my built-in microphone. I had to unistall my HP SmartMenu controls because the buttons wouldn't respond and the on-screen volume display would activate every time the windows volume control would move causing me not to be able to play any games. I have ran MSE and MalwareBytes and have not found any viruses or ad/spyware that is causing the trouble. I don't' know what to do..I really don't want to have to go through the process of windows re-install or game re-installing.
I have installed Windows 8 on a HP dv6-6096 nr which I purchased in may 2011. I did an upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium. Every time, I hightlight control panel, the machine reverts back to the desktop. How do I fix this?
I thave updated my video drivers. I an't tell waht other devices are not usiable in Windows 8.
I figured that I can go a clean install and all should work but I don't know if I can re-install under Windows 8.
Here is an update:The HP dvd6-6096nr used NON-STANDARD function which folks at HP, Microsoft and Microcenter have been made aware of. So the ways to get into Safe mode, Shift F8 is the easy way. For me, that doesn’t work. Using Windows key +x, lets me run msconfig.Using msconfig and booting into safe mode, action center tells me that I need to install 3 drivers: (Intel Bluetooth wireless driver, HP power management and Intel wireless display). Those were installed.I rebooted the machine, Control panel still crashes.Rebooted into safe mode, action center still shows that I need to install these 3 drivers.Since Microsoft makes it nearly impossible to boot windows to update drivers, that is where I am at. My choice is (1) install Windows 8 (not upgrade) or forget about Windows 8. The problem is (1) will Windows 8 re-activate and if other licensed software will re-install?
Has anyone had an issue where the ALS suddenly stops working under Windows 7? I've checked BIOS settings, tried seemingly every combination of driver uninstalls/reinstalls, confirmed that both the Dell and Microsoft ambient light sensor services are enabled and running (and tried disabling, one, the other, and both) and have not had any luck. Unlike some other posts I found on here with the same-body Lattitude models, I can control the backlight manually with both the keyboard and software - it is only the ambient sensor that does not work.
Because of a virus, I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I have gotten everything else working except the fingerprint reader.I have installed the Validity Fingerprint Reader driver from the Dell Support site. The fingerprint reader shows up in the Device Manager. However, the Biometric Devices applet doesn't appear in the Control Panel.
I tried letting Windows update detect the fingerprint reader. It installed a driver for a Synaptics device. This was enough to get the Biometric Devices applet to appear in the Control Panel. However, when I tried to configure the fingerprint reader, I got an error saying no fingerprint management software was installed. I have seen lots of posts online directing me to validityinc.com for drivers or the DigitalPersona software, but Validity Inc. seems to have gone out of business. The DigitalPersona software is available on the Dell Support site for my service tag.
I have even tried installing the Windows 8 Validity Sensor Driver for my laptop, but though it successfully installs, it produces the same results.
