Apple :: Macbook (early 2009) RAM Upgrade

Jun 5, 2009

I just got my 4GB crucial kit in today, 2x2GB 800MHz DDR2. Since the new white macbook update just came out (2.13GHz), and it reportedly supports 800MHz RAM, I decided to try and upgrade mine (2.0GHz model). I just wanted to report that my macbook recognizes it no problem, and reports the speed at 800MHz.

Apple :: Macbook (early 2009) Not Downclocking Much

Apr 27, 2009

I just wanted to know if this is normal. In XP, my early 2009 macbook (check my sig) only downclocks the processor to 1.59GHz (from 2.0GHz) in power saver mode. My 2008 macbook (intel) would downclock to 800MHz (from 2.1GHz). That just doesn't seem right, is that normal? Just doesn't seem like much of a power saver to me.

Apple :: Late 2007/Early 2008 MacBook HD Upgrade

Jan 16, 2009

My photography hobby is getting more complex than originally anticipated, so I now want to upgrade my HD from the standard 120GB to something bigger, since I only have about 10 GB left.

I have been looking at the WD Scorpio Black (320GB, 7k200, priced $89 at newegg and 150 on WD site), but was wondering if it would work with my MacBook (late 07/early 08) and if there would be any difference with the sales package from Newegg and WD own site..

Also I was wondering how the performance is, and if there would be any noticeable difference between the 320 Black and a 500 Blue (both WD)?

Also, what is the procedure, when upgrading? My present drive is backed up via TimeMachine (with all docs, pictures, music and apps).

Apple :: Macbook (Late 2009) Vs Macbook Pro (Mid 2009)

Feb 20, 2010

I'm buying one or the other. My next computer will run OSX, that is the only thing I have set in stone.

13" MBP over 13" MB:

SD Card reader
(This would be nice, but I can do without. I only use the reader on my current laptop like once every 2 months)

FireWire 800
(Absolutely no need for this)

Backlit Keyboard
(Absolutely no need for this, people look at their keyboard while typing?)

Screen Color Gamut
(60% more than that of MB I heard ... I know this applies to the older MB but not sure about the late 2009 MB. Can anyone comment on the difference?)...................

Apple :: Upgrading Ram/hdd On Early-2008 MacBook Pro

Mar 1, 2009

My university had a brand new early-2008 MBP model (one left) for $1,399 so I bought it a couple of weeks ago. It has the 2.5Ghz processor, 2GB ram, 250GB HDD, 8600m GT w/ 512 vRam, and the matte display. I was trying to decide whether to buy a 2.4Ghz unibody MB, a 2.4Ghz unibody MBP, or refurbished of both. I went to talk to the people at the tech store and they showed me a brand new early-2008 model MBP (a design I happen to like more than the unibody because I am not a fan of the Sony chiclet keyboard or the new "no button" button touchpad) and I purchased it immediately.

So far I have been pretty happy with the purchase and the performance of the machine although it does get quite hot on its own. The main thing I am wondering about is upgrading the ram to 4GB and swapping out the hard drive for a 7200RPM one. The hard drive is less important to me as of right now because the higher RPM will cause more heat and drain the battery faster but what I DO want to do immediately is upgrade the ram.

The machine has 2GB PC2-5300 in it which is 667 Mhz. The bus speed on the machine is 800Mhz. I am wondering whether or not I can match the bus speed and install PC2-6400 which are 800 Mhz. If not that is fine I'll just go with PC2-5300 and pick up 4GB from Fry's today but running the faster speed would be nice.

On the hard drive front how exactly does this work? I know on a PC I can just swap out the hard drive and load a saved system image or install a new OS but does it work the same with Apple? If I swap the hard drive do I just pop in the install disks and install it?

Apple :: Macbook Pro 2009 Vs Studio XPS 1645

Oct 17, 2009

I have heard some crying earlier from within the Dell message board, so let me clarify this now... I do not have a camera rite now, nor any pictures to compare or to post to this thread.... but here goes:

The Studio XPS is processor is Intel® Core™ i7-820QM
with Edge-to-edge Glossy 16.0 inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p)!

We are comparing the screen of the Dell 1645 to a Macbook Pro and an iMac... the results are sad. 1645 displays notably better than both of these Macs, but red and green are displayed slightly off.

Here are the images we are comparing on each screen that are loaded in seperate tabs:

some recent pictures from my buddy michaels wedding:

and
[url]

I am VERY HAPPY to report that blacks display far better on the 1645 than a 2009 Macbook Pro or the iMac. When viewing photo intensive websites, the 1645 is really gripping our attention (all things being equal such as brightness set to max, etc.)

Apple :: New (June 2009) MacBook Pros

Do these latest MBPs allow for relatively easy end-user hard drive replacement?

Was hoping to use my own HD or SSD. Does popping open the MacBook void any warranties? Have not used an Apple computer for years, much less purchased one.

Apple :: 2.8ghz Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2009 Performance

Aug 6, 2009

I'm considering buying the model stated in this thread title. I know that the processor is an older T9600 model and not the more efficient P9700. What I would like to know from those of you who have this model is; do your notebooks run a lot hotter (and therefore noisier?) with this processor?

This would be my first Mac so I just want to understand how a particular advertised GPU feature in PCs translate to Macs; PC manufacturers state that their computers have graphics cards with (for instance) "512mb dedicated memory with up to 1791mb shared." If I understand this correctly the PC GPUs take memory from the RAM and that's what the "Shared" bit is. The Mac website doesn't mention anything about "shared" memory so how does this apply to macs? Sorry if this last question seems a bit remedial.

Apple :: MBP 15" (june 2009) Model RAM Upgrade

Jun 25, 2009

I am going to buying one of these in Canada and will take the basic 2.8ghz model with no upgrades. I would however like to get 8gb of ram because I will be doing lots of multi-tasking and some 3d work in windows. Obviously I will not pay apple's crazy prices. I know you can buy "generic" ram for the laptop and was wondering if you know what ram I can use and if you know of any good deals? If I sell the mac ram and only user "generic" ram will my warranty be voided?

Apple :: Early 08 MBP To HDTV - How Do I Get Sound

Jul 14, 2009

I have an early 08 MBP (non unibody) and I want to hook it up to my samsung HDTV to play movies. I have a DVI to HDMI cable that covers video and it works fine but so far that makes it work like a really REALLY big monitor. Since DVI doesn't output sound what do I use to get the sound to output to the tv as well?

Does this work?

I notice in one of the reviews one person states they used this to connect their MBP to their HDTV, I was just wondering if it would work for my model as well?

Apple :: Ram Upgrade Macbook 13'

Apr 30, 2009

My girlfriend has a Macbook 13' and recently she told me a problem with it, everytime she opens Word the system slows down, big time. It sounded like a Ram problem because I know Word is mem hog, plus all her other programs running. Anyway the Macbook comes with 512mb which is crap and can barely run much of anything, I looked it up and its fairly easy to install, so this is where you guys come in.

I need to find out how much Ram I can install (only 2? or up to 4? and can OSX even recognize 4?) and what Ram is compatiable (I thought Ram was universal, but I could be wrong)

Apple :: Macbook Pro 13 - Ram Upgrade

Sep 21, 2009

I recently got my macbook pro 13 and am loving every minute of it, so much better than windows for me personally.

The mac was running really fast to start with with internet pages loading immediately on firefox. However, yesterday i installed office for mac and now things are loading more slowly, sometimes a 1-3 second delay while it loads.

Does anyone know if this is just something random or is it caused by installing office for mac? If it is caused by office for mac, would upgrading from 2gb to 4gb make webpages load faster? And generally make things more snappy on the mac?

I only use the laptop for office documents, internet browsing, movie watching and listening to music...so no intense video editing or any thing like that.

Apple :: Upgrade To A 4GB DDR3 On A MacBook

Apr 15, 2009

I got a macbook pro and I asked them to give me an upgrade for a 4GB instead of the standard 2GB DDR3. I returned the notebook but they had a policy that I should keep the 2GB DDR3 I asked them to install. This costs about GBP 80. So I ended up with 2GB DDR3 that I paid for the GBP 80. I checked online and I could find them for a much cheaper price. Why then apple has it with this price? Are they any different? Is the GBP 80 the price for the 2GB DDR3 only or inclusive the price difference between 2x1GB and 2GB one chip DDR3. Because in the process I guess they had to take out the 2x1GB chips and insert 2x2GB chips to fill up the two internal memory slots. I asked them but they told me that it is the cost of just the 1x2GB DDR3 increase that I ordered?

Apple :: RAM Upgrade For Macbook Unibody

Apr 24, 2010

I've got my first Macbook Unibody that i've had for a little over a week now, and I love it (First Apple computer period). I've been using it with Parallels and everything's been running great, however I'm beginning to wonder if I'll get better performance with more RAM. I haven't really looked at the RAM usage of OS X right now, however I do know that with Linux the amount of RAM you're currently using isn't really relevant, it's swap space that's relevant.

Also, I don't do anything graphic intensive except for gaming in Windows (bootcamp) every once in a while, in OS X I use Parallels all of the time, so it may come in use there, but again that's what I'm asking for.

1) Is there any need to upgrade the memory to 4GB? I have heard the OS works fine with the lower memory (as compared to most PCs). I dont really game on my computer, but do watch TV online some.

2) I start school in August, I have the money for the purchase, and would prefer to get it now......but is there any reason for me to wait until August? Just wondering if an insider has any idea of upcoming deals or upgrades expected in the near future.

Apple :: MacBook - Time To UPGRADE

Jun 8, 2009

I bought a MacBook on THURSDAY and now they already have new ones! Is there a way I can upgrade? My friend also recently bought a MacBook Pro and he mentioned something about Customer Relations refunding him money or something of that nature. What does this mean?

Is there a way to upgrade without paying an arm and a leg (again)?

Third- I bought an iPhone 3G 8gig mid December. I remember that at that time they had some sort of update process where you could trade in your older iPhone for a newer one.

Do you think they're going to do this? Would it be better to leave it jailbroken and do a software unlock on my current one and sell it on craigslist?
