Dell :: Clean Windows 7 Install On XPS 16?
Mar 8, 2010
Dell is sending me a replacement SXPS16 (the 4th one. The previous 3 have been SXPS13's that have all been defective).
I genuinely hated all the bloatware on the 13's, so would you guys advise doing a fresh install on the 16?
The computer comes with the proper disc to do that, right?

I have a Studio 15 (1535) and did a clean install with Windows 7 (32 bit) and now I'm in the process of reinstalling my programs.
I used Windows 7 Easy Transfer so I can keep track on what needs to be installed and boy this program is slick.
I didn't install all the Dell software that came with the computer but selected what I wanted

I'm not pleased with some of the bloatware the laptop shipped with, so I just wanted to make sure that I can clean install from the "Reinstallation DVD" my computer came with. The product key isn't on the disc but it does seem to be on a sticker on the bottom of the notebook. Am I safe in doing this? I've already backed up all my files...

The notebook comes with an restore disc, but I really would like to have a simple and clean Win8 install, without any unecessary pre-installed stuff and separate partitions for system and personal data.
Can I make a clean installation of Windows 8 on my new Inspiron 15R SE? Does it affect warranty?
Do I need a product key or is it attached to the BIOS and will not be asked when installing from a disc? The drivers on Dell website will keep the SSD mSata and AMD Commutable Graphics working properly or will I need some Dell software to make it happen?

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook. I am looking to do a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I am attempting to boot the installer from a USB drive and keep getting the error:
"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash Drive, please insert it now.
Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD Drive, you can safely remove it for this step."
This is also my first time working with a computer that has an SSD drive in addition to the main hard drive. Is there anything special that needs to be done when doing a clean install in regards to the SSD? I just want to make sure that I will be able to get the SSD operating the same way as it currently is.

Have an HP DV8110us Pavilion notebook purchased in 2006. Running XP SP3. Upgrading to Windows 7 with a clean install. Ran the MS Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. This notebook has the AMD Turion 64-bit chip running at 1.8 mhz. I have 2 GB memory. Looking through the Win7 options, I decided to order Win7 32-bit, since I'm only carrying 2 GB of memory. Win 7 64-bit seems to be happier with 4 GB. While the Advisor shows I have some drivers that need updating after Window 7 is installed, I just noticed that the Realtex RTL8139/810x NIC needs a new driver for 32-bit Win7, but under 64-bit Win7, the NIC is compatible.
Should I have ordered the 64-bit Win7 ? Or should I look around for a new Realtek driver ? Realtex has a link to an old Vista driver that should work. Other searches suggest that a workable driver might be on the Win7 DVD.

I am getting my win7 upgrade disc tomorrow for my studio 1555, and I was wondering a few things before I carry out my clean install.
First, with regards to drivers, there do not seem to be drivers for everything on the dell win7 driver page (nothing for bluetooth, system utilities, etc.). I have downloaded everything relevant to my computer, but where can I find the rest of the drivers I need? Also, what order should I be installing them?
Second question is in regards to the recovery partition. Is there any point keeping it? I have heard various things about whether it will or won't work after installing windows 7

I got my Dell Windows disk yesterday and I would like to do a clean install. I would like to do 2 partitions....
one for the OS at 150 GB and the remaining space in another partition for things like music, pictures, movies....etc.
I was able to delete all the partitions that originally came with the 1555 so that there is one big Disk O Unallocated Space.
I then clicked new to make a partition for the OS. I set it to be 150 GB when I did this it also created another partition at 100 MB. So now I have:
Disk 0 Partition 1: System Reserved Total Size 100 MB Free Space 86 MB Type System
Disk 0 Partition 2 Total Size 146.4 GB Free Space 146.4 GB Type Primary
Disk 0 Unallocated Space Total Size 319.3 GB Free Space 319.3 Gb .....

I just received Windows 7 Upgrade Disc from Dell, and it says "Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional Upgrade" on the disc and COA also says "Win Vista Bus to Win 7 Pro UPG Fullfill."
I was curious if it is really impossible to do a clean install with upgrade disc as regular upgrade disc is. (At least I was told that it is impossible), but I did not want to upgrade my notebook to Windows 7 yet.
So, I gave it a try on VMWare. It installed just like regular Windows 7 disc in a empty HDD. It even took COA that came with the upgrade disc.
I did not try activating because it probably will fail if it uses SLIC to activate, or in worst case, it will get activated on my VM, and I will be unable to active it when I actually want to upgrade my notebook's OS

Has anyone clean installed Windows 7 on their new Inspiron laptops? I just bought a E1545 and it came with Windows 7. I'd like to clean install and I was wondering if it was as easy as popping in the Windows 7 DVD and waiting for it to install and then just dling the drivers online and installing.
And how about Windows XP? I know most people have gotten used to and accepted Windows 7... but has anyone installed WIndows XP on their laptop that came with Windows 7 originally? I mean a native install, not virtual...
If no one has done this yet, I am willing to create a guide if it is requested and if I succeed in doing so...

The laptop I bought back in August came with Vista Home Premium 64-bit, so later this month I will be receiving the free Windows 7 "upgrade" disc from HP... My main question is, will I or won't I be able to do a clean install with just this disc?

I have just bought Inspiron 1440. My configuration is - Intel T6600, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 3GB DDR2 RAM, 320 GB Hard Disk and 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330.
Further I have also taken 1 Year Complete Cover Accidental Damage Protection plan.
I am thinking of doing a clean install of windows7 on the machine with two key objectives:
Although the Dell Inspiron doesnot come with a lot of bloatware still it has few programs which I dont require.
Partitioning of the C Drive .....

Guide: Clean installation of Windows 7 on Acer, heavily edited by moderators
This guide explains how to do a clean installation of Windows 7 on an Acer computer that's been licensed to used it.
If your system originally came with Windows Vista, you need an Acer Upgrade Kit.
If your system originally came with Windows 7, use the key on the bottom of your machine.
The described method will work for ANY edition (Starter/Home/Pro/Ultimate) and for ANY architecture (32/64-bit) and ANY language, but only the version you are licensed for; no free upgrades here.
Step 1: Verify eligibility for Windows 7.
CONTENT REMOVED DUE TO PIRACY CONCERNS
Either you are licensed for Windows 7 by having a key on the bottom of your machine, or you have an Acer Upgrade kit. If you have neither, then you are not licensed for it, regardless of what's in your BIOS.
Step 2: Back-up factory images and personal files.
Since we will be reinstalling Windows you will lose all your files and ability to restore to factory condition, so it would be a wise thing to make back-ups.
A. Back-up factory images.
If you want to have restore DVDs then it should be a good time to create them now. You can do it via Acer eRecovery program. If you have a built-in or external DVD drive then simply burn them and if you do not then you can save DVD image to your hard drive. Follow these instructions.
B. Back-up personal files.
If you have files you would like to keep now it is time to save them to either a flash drive or an external hard drive.
Step 3: Preparing Windows 7 installation image.
Simply use the content in this topic to download and prepare your Windows 7 DVD or USB key. This will also remove the version restriction so the burned DVD or prepped USB key can be used to install any version of Windows 7 - you'll still need the right license key, of course.
Step 4: Setting up Windows 7 installation media.

I purchased a Sony VAIO VGN-Z46GD and was eligible for the Windows 7 Upgrade program. So my Windows 7 Disc & Supplement Disc arrived in no time. I did a CLEAN install with the Windows 7 Disc wiping everything (this was intentional).
The problem is the Supplement Disc will not run at all, gives me an error (is there a way to force it?). I used the mod2wim tool to extract all WIM's from it however I have had no success in getting my VAIO special buttons working, power management or my function keys operational. The extracted WIM's are also a bit odd, includes ATi drivers when clearly my machine is hybrid intel/nvidia.
From what I have read on the Forums I need to install things in a specific order. Also if I can't find my drivers where can I look to re-download them?

I have a VGN-790P notebook, currently with Windows Vista Business installed; 2GB RAM; 2.16 GHz centrino duo. However, through my school I can download Windows 7 for free!
I really want to upgrade my OS to Windows 7, but Sony is not providing drivers for my model. Is there any way that I can still install it and get the drivers from somewhere? I really dont want to do it if it's going to cause a bunch of functionality issues.
Also, I think that a clean install would be best, just to clear out my computer and possibly make it a bit more responsive. Is it possible to do this if I will be downloading Windows 7 and not have a physical disk for the install?

I have the notebook in subject, after the upgrade to windows 8.1 in my hard disk I found a new recovery partition (350MB) plus the old recovery (400MB) plus the EFI partition (260MB)...so I have 1GB of space unused.
I think also is not normal that I need at least two days for complete re-install my nb using the recovery dvd or partition and then upgrade it to windows 8.1 by internet.
I would like to perform a clean installation of Windows 8.1 but I don't know how do this. I tried to download the original ISO from Microsoft but my product key is not accepted (with generic pk I get connection error).
I found my pk using RWEverything and tried to download the ISO with errors:
Windows8-Setup.exe
"this product key cannot be used to install a retail version of windows 8"
WindowsSetupBox.exe
this product key didn't work. please check it and try again

From the beginning:
I got my XPS15 (32gb ssd + 1tb hdd) right before christmas and had been happy with it. I even managed to get Intel Rapid Storage running, since it did not work from the beginning for whatever reason. My hdd made funny sounds soon after, so last week happened what needed to happen - the hdd crashed.
No problem, dell in person of a service technician replaced the hdd and installed a clean win 8 (not the original dell package, just a plain one). This did not support Intel Rapid Storage, probably because bios was set to AHCI. I found out later, when the technician had left. Not any driver seemed to work.
So I decided to recover my old win 8 with my self made set of recovery dvds. But this did not work, win 8 just did not want to start after recovery.
I now try to install win 8 from the dvd the service guy brought, but at the beginning it asks me to provide the correct driver. I put the F6-driver for sata from intel onto a usb-stick, but setup does not accept that. I cannot proceed with installation...

Mar 26 2010 - Updated Intel SATA/AHCI driver from 8.9.0.1023 --> 9.6.0.1014

Apr 22 2010 - Added Nvidia driver 197.45 through Windows Update
May 09 2010 - Update to SUS, S-button and additional settings in VCC.
May 27 2010 - Added Nvidia 257.15 driver, modded inf, and instructions.
The following steps below include various driver sources and install instructions.
1. Install your edition of Windows 7. I chose to change the UAC setting to never notify. If you leave it in the default setting, various prompts may open when installing the drivers and utilities. Open "Computer", click the "Organize" tab, navigate to "folder and search options", click "View" tab, and uncheck "Hide empty drives in the computer folder".
There will be two exclamation marks for the "Mass storage controller" and "Unknown device" in the device manager. Intel 4965 Wifi, Marvell network controller, and Conexant modem drivers are included in Windows 7. You can update them if necessary

I have been trying to make a clean install of Windows 7 but when I get to the install screen,
it says that "it does not recognize my drive." This happened too when I tried to install windows XP,
and I solved it by slipstreaming the SATA controller drivers but, I don't know where to find those for windows 7, or if that even will solve the same problem

Is it hidden in some folder like Lenovos?
