Dell :: Windows 7 X64 Drivers For An Inspiron 1520
Apr 16, 2009I'm installing Windows Vista (64-bit edition) on my Dell Inspiron 1520.
Previously I was using the 32-bit edition, with the Vista-32 drivers from the Inspiron 1520 page on the Dell website.
As you know, Dell does not officially support 64-bit on the Inspiron 1520, although the processor is 64-bit capable. Thus, there are no Vista-64 drivers on the Inspiron 1520 page. I'm searching for appropriate drivers, but am unsure on the following issues:
1) Often a Dell Vista-64 driver exists on the Dell website, for the exact same device as mine, but for a different laptop. Especially when intended for newer laptops, these drivers often have a higher version number (and more recent release date) than the corresponding Vista-32 driver available for the old Inspiron 1520. Is it safe to install these?
2) Is it safe to install drivers directly from the device manufacturer? For example, can I download the Matrix Storage Manager or INF Chipset driver directly from Intel, or does the Dell version have customizations that are essential for my laptop?

Oct 9, 2009Recently my fan has been making a lot of noise whenever it starts up.
Sometimes it sounds like it's getting caught on something as it spins and it trips for a few seconds. Other times it makes a high pitched, not particularly loud but noticeable, noise,
or it'll sound like it's blowing out a lot of air, usually more then it really is. It's also made a sort clicking sound before, similar to the noises a processor on a normal computer might make when loading or booting or something, but I know it's for sure coming from the fan

Sep 5, 2009First of all I wanna say that I'm a new member on this site. I've checked it out a few times and it seems that people get good help and tips so I decided to register too.
Anyway I bought an inspiron 1520 right about 2 years ago. It's my first laptop and I havent had any troubles with it whatsoever and it's been surving me great.
However 2 years of wear and tear have taken its toll on the outside plastic cover of the computer. One of the corners is cracked (the one to the right of the volume and play/pause buttons) the metal part is a bit bent but it's nothing serious .......

Aug 30, 2009A month after getting my new toshiba (insignature) and letting my sister being to use my old laptop because her 9 year old system decided to fail at life.. the computer decides to fail completely.
I have no idea what the issue is... The laptop will turn on, and turn on I mean the power light will come on for a second or two.. and then the light with go back out and the computer is completely off

Jan 21, 2009I have an Inspiron 1520 with a GeForce 8600M GT graphics card.
I spilled some coke on it some time ago, and had to replace the keyboard, and also the media buttons don't work really well, so I purchased a new palmrest.
My problem is, that the TV-Out doesn't work anymore... although...it does work, in the way that I can figure out some image on the TV, but it's all black&white and flickering. Also, when Windows boots up, I can't see the "Welcome" screen, it's just black,
and suddenly the desktop appears with all the loading apps. It's 100% TV-Out related, because I recently reinstalled Windows, and it went just fine until I tried again the tv-out (which still did not work).

I searched it alot about restore to factory setting and apply all the suggestion but cant work. When I press F8 and select system repair after that select language then for log in it shows me two account one is mine one which i created and the other I don,t know where it comes from. So i select my administrator account but there when i click on restore to factory setting it shows a message that "system/window cant find recovery disk" like this type of message..

Sep 22, 2008I'm having some problems with my charger. When I plug it in and turn the laptop on it says that it couldn't recognize the charger and won't charge, the laptop itself works, however. Sometimes it does charge, but rarely. I'm in a little hurry and didn't search thru the forum. Apologize if this issue was answered before.

Basically what happens is, I press the power on button of my machine, everything appears to be normal, the power LED turns on, the Hard drive activity LED flickers on and the DVD drive "clicks" (im sure some Dell owners know what I mean by this) BUT then all the lights go out (besides the power) and nothing is shown on my screen, no BIOS loading, nothing.
Does anyone know what might cause this?
I tried yesterday to get it to work but after about 7 hours I just gave up, nothing I did changed anything (I thought the CPU/GPU may of come unattached from the motherboard but after reseating them the problem was still there

Apr 28, 2009can't see a thing on the screen. He left the laptop on hibernate for around 3 hours and when he came back, the screen was very dark.
He says he's restarted several times since then and the only thing which seemed to "light up" the screen was taking the power out; allowing the laptop to run on battery. However, just 5 minutes ago, even though the laptop was on battery, the screen has gone dark. He can barely make out MSN conversations by shining his lamp onto the screen but he can't see the mouse cursor.
The laptop is around 1 and a half years old.

Mar 23, 2009My Dell Insipiron 1520 (lappy) with a DVD-RW combo has started to make a weird 'high pitched 'chuggy' sound whenever I turn on the laptop or when I eject or put in a disc.
Also when it starts to read something and when you tell it to write. The last time I checked, I can still read DVD game discs but trying burn a DVD just doesn't work. It doesn't think that anything's in there.

Jul 11, 2009I've had this laptop for about 7 months now and it's progressively running hotter and hotter while I game. I now have the back of the laptop propped up with some books so that there's more air circulation underneath it, but even so I will often hit 96 degrees Celsius when playing games such as Call of Duty 4, Crysis, Farcry, and World of Warcraft.
I will admit that I force clock the cpu to maintain a core clock of 1.60 GHz. If I don't force clock it it will just drop my cpu clock down to 800 MHz and sit there giving me 10 fps and lower in any game. My video card (8600m gt) runs fine and cool so there's no problems there .....

Jul 27, 2009As everybody probably knows Vista doesn't support/have Stereo Mix, so in order to get it to work I followed a guide from somewhere (could of been here) that linked to other Sigmatel drivers and then installed them in XP compatibility mode,
however, having done that i've now totally lost the use of the inbuilt mic...has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way of fixing this or am I limited to having one or the other

Feb 23, 2009Me and my sister have 2x 1520's and I'm looking to upgrade my RAM. Both laptops have 2gb of RAM and still contain the original build from Dell.
I have a few questions...
1. They're both running Vista Home Premium -- what's the most RAM it can handle?
2. Do they contain 2x 1gb sticks, or 1x 2gb stick?
I know there's tons of different RAM available, so could someone please link me to a 2gb stick that'll fit and work in my laptop? The cheaper the better, but ideally with a decent warrenty and from a respected company if possible.
Dell :: Inspiron 1520 Repair
Jun 17, 2009My laptop took a nasty fall when it was open. It still works fine, but one of the hinges is now broken... not only the plastic part, but the metal hinge is cracked in half too. I am worried if I keep opening and closing it, it may eventually do damage to my LCD screen.
I'm sure Dell will charge me a ridiculous amount of money to fix it, so I was going to have a computer savvy friend do it for me. Does anyone know what the part(s) I need is called and where I can find it. Also any directions to fix it would help so I can tell my friend exactly what to do

I will be upgrading the Ram to 4gb soon
and probably the HD to 500gb soon
but the question is what is the best graphics card that can replaces the 8400m GS that is in there now and how noticeable of a difference will it make?
