Dell Inspiron 15R :: Hard Drive Dismount Noise
Feb 18, 2013
I have an Inspiron 15R - just got it. While I like it, it does make a clicking 'dismount' noise pretty often - especially if I plug a memory stick on or something else that causes a hard drive access. Is this normal?

I have a Inspiron 15 3537 laptop and I noticed that I can hear a high pitched noise where the Memory/hard drive are located. That noise is louder when I put the battery mode on "battery saving", but I still can hear that noise when the battery mode is set to other mode than that. Please note that I switched my hard drive with a SSD, because I thought that it come from here.
My laptop is still on warranty, I bought it recently (July 2014)
I know that there are posts with this issus, but I haven't found a solution yet.
Also, on an other subjet, is it normal that my battery already lost 10% of its capacity after only 5 month of use?

I just got my M1530 a couple of days ago and I have a few concerns and I wondered if you would be kind enough to comment on.
This is my spec:
XPS M1530 CORE 2 DUO T9300 2.50GHz,800,6MDisplay 15.4" UltraSharp Widescreen WSXGA+ (1680x1050) TFT with TrueLifeMemory Dual Channel 4.0GB (2x2048) 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAMHard Drive: 320GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM)8xDVD+/-RW Slim Slot-Load Drive,
including SWBattery XPS Primary 6-cell 56WHr Li-IonGraphics Card 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GTIntegrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio
Firstly, I notice that my hard drive (I assume the hard drive is located on the left palmrest side) always appears to be spinning loudly enough for me to notice. Is this normal? It also makes weird clicky noises intermittently and I have no idea why.
The CPU fan seems to be on an awful lot. I have a Gateway MT6821 and the fan only comes on under heavy load, with the dell it's on almost all the time.
Finally, build quality - I have noticed that the trim that sits around the LCD panel is about 2-3mm away from the screen on the left side. Is this acceptable or should I return and ask for a replacement laptop?

I have used my 1340 for about 3 months now and not until recently had I experience a constant hard drive noise.
I don't know how to describe the noise...something like blowing air into water, but in a more subtle sound
It would go away every once in a while...possibly when the laptop is not running as hard...but then after a while it will come back again
It is very annoying especially when I use the laptop at a quiet place...however I don't see any performance issue so far
is that a sign that my hard drive is failing?

I just bought a Latitude E6500. Mostly a well built and well equipped notebook I think (poor audio and the fan runs a bit too much though).
My main problem with it is that the hard disk makes a constant noise that I find very annoying at low ambient noise levels. It's not seeks -
it's almost constant. At first I thought it was the main fan running at low speed. But I can see through the vent below that the noise is there even when the fan is not moving (and i8kfangui31 reports that the fan is not active).

I did a lot of research already but nothing seems to work . I have a 320 gig 7200rpm hard rive on the xps m1530 and the noise is pretty anoying,
I already changed the bios settings to performance, downloaded the latest driver update and when I install it I get two files that pretty much contain nothing,
I already burned a CD with the ISO file but nothing comes up, just shows up as a blank CD, I tried going to the Device Manager option and update the driver there but it didn't work either.
I found a topic discussing the latest patch R206837 for the hard drive and some users had the same problem but they never replied and said how they fixed it,

My BRAND NEW Studio 1555 has been clicking/whirring rapidly since I first turned it on Friday.
Occasionally it gets so fast that it sounds like it's buzzing and it also sometimes sounds like it's creaking.

I have owned my hp envy 17 laptop for almost 2 years now. Recently my computer has been making a really loud noise and it seems it is working a lot harder than it needs to be. I suspect the fan or the hard drive is the culprit but I have convinced myself it is the hard drive.
When I start up my computer the loud noise begins almost immediately after startup. This noise sounds like the computer is working as hard as it possibly can, almost making a grinding noise. Even after the computer has booted up, this noise continues for another minute or two before it stops, then my laptop becomes quiet. What puzzles me, and leads me to believe it is the hard drive, is the fact my computer get unreasonably hot when the noise occurs; it never used to do this before.
This situation is something I have never heard of before. My laptop for some reason ,when it is moved or bumped, even the slightest, start to "rev" and the hard drive roars; it does this for five minutes or so. It also does this when the laptop is closed, and in "sleep mode"; the slightest bump lets it off like a baby. I suspect that there is a switch, flap or wire that is not attached properly and when moved it triggers the hard drive.
The main thing I do when the sound occurs is I close the laptop lid which puts it in sleep mode and turns off the hard drive, silencing it for the time being. This solution I came across by accident; I turned my laptop sideways when the sound occurs and the sound stops until I put the laptop upright again(Laptop is open).

I recently bought a Thinkpad T540P laptop. But there is always some noise made by the hard drive. The noise makes me feel uncomfortable. It sounds like it has been used for a long time, but actually only two days.

I had noise coming from my optical drive. The computer randomly checks my optical drive as if I were booting up or put a disk in it. I took it out, re-seated it and flashed the BIOS. It seemed to be better for a week or so but it has come back with a vengeance. I keep hearing the click of it accessing at odd times (again, when I insert a memory stick, or am working with pictures, were some times that it makes the noise). I now crack the door and leave the drive open so it's not accessing on and off all the time. Inspiron 15R,5520

I've been looking everywhere for an answer to this question and can't find it. I have an Inspiron 9300 (old.. I know), and it still works great for everything I need it to do, except one thing. I have no storage space at all.
I've been looking at throwing in a new HD, preferably as large as possible.
The only problem is all the conflicting things I hear about these systems.
First off, I know that mine is an ATA model, not SATA. I'm definitely looking for storage space above all else. So whats the biggest drive this laptop will support? I've been looking at this one (Western Digital 250 GB 5400 RPM), but I've heard things about the bios only allowing hard drives up to a certain size.

If its possible to add 2nd hdd, what extra accessories will I need? I mean the caddy, cables, etc.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop, last week when switching on the laptop I was presented with an error saying "Disk Read Error", the laptop would not boot up at all not even in safe mode.
I ran Dell diagnostics and it gave me a error code of 0146 which is harddrive related. I then attempted to repair the windows installation using chkdsk /p and /r but this seems to have made things worse! When booting up, all i can see is a blank screen

I replaced the hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop. I need to get the programs and data files transferred to the new drive. I have a Repair Win 7 - 64-bit CD, made from the old hard drive -- do I use that to boot up the computer? Or do I use the old hard drive image that I have stored on an external hard drive?

Just brought home a Dell Inspiron 15 from Best Buy tonight. While going through Windows Explorer and trying to figure out the goofy "Libraries" thing for Windows 7, I noticed that my hard drive is partitioned like so:
OS (C): 38.4GB free of 58.5GB
Local Disk (D): 186Gb free of 229GB
Now I am always used to everything being on 'C'. When I tried to copy all my stuff over from my previous Dell 1420, it wouldn't all copy over to any of the libraries or my "user" folder (Erin) since I didn't have enough space. So despite Windows 7 setting up all these nifty folders in my "Erin" folder (C:/Users), I can't fit all my stuff there.
Is Dell partitioning their hard-drives differently? Am I nuts for thinking mine is set up weird?

I finally have time to add space to my Inspiron 1720. It currently has a 160 GB hard drive and I was thinking of adding the following as a second hard drive:

I am aware that installing a secondary hard drive needs different equipment than installing a primary hard drive, so should this be everything I need to install the aforementioned hard drive?

It came with a 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive.
Trying to replace it with a bigger HD.

Would the 7200 rpm be better.
Would the Seagate ST9160411AS Momentus 7200.3 SATA 3Gb/s 160 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Driven work? ...

I've got an Inspiron 9300 that I bought in 2004. Now, I know that it's a bit outdated (it's processor is an Intel Pentium M 1.86) with a 100gb hard drive.
My question is is it possible to get a bigger compatible hard drive in the computer's slot? I'm almost full with music (that I've copied from my CDs) and family photos, etc. so it would be handy to have more space to work with.
It's still in good shape. The warrantee just ran out a year ago and I've got a bunch of newer expensive parts (screen, heat sinks, heat fans, etc.) so it's likely worth my while if such a hard drive is available.
My computer might last another three or four years without having to need serious costly repairs making it best to simply buy a newer one. (I'm keeping all of my necessary files on a 320 gb USB drive in case that happens.)

The notebook is about 5 yrs old and has the original 20Gb HD which I wanted to upgrade to a 120. The operating system is XP and the computer runs fine; it just needs more HD space. I purchased a new WD HD which will not install. When I put the new drive in (with XP install disk in CD drive) the system will hang for about five minutes before finally getting to the setup routine. The setup sees the new HD and prompts to format it and I did. Once the format is done and it reboots, I get a BIOS message saying "fixed disk failure." At this point, it will not proceed to install windows. I've also tried booting from a floppy. Basically, the machine will not boot from a floppy with the new HD installed. If I remove the HD entirely, the machine will boot from a floppy and it will also boot correctly from the XP setup disk. It will also boot from a floppy with the old hard drive installed and it also boots from the CD with the old hard drive installed. I have sent the drive back to the seller and they tested it and said they could find nothing wrong. I tried installing the new HD about a half dozen times and it behaved the same way each time. I just went through this proceedure with another computer (replace old HD with brand new one), so I know how it is supposed to work. There is nothing I can configure in BIOS as far as the HD is concerned, and I have not been able to find anything that would indicate that I need to update my BIOS. My basic question is; why will the computer work with the old HD, but not a new one if there is nothing wrong with the new HD?
