Dell :: Inspiron 6000 Bios Updateshutdown Taking Forever
Feb 16, 2009
I downloaded and ran a bios update for a 6000 (old laptop that i am reformatting).
It has been shutting down for over 4 hours now. No idea what to do. Should I manually turn it off and try the bios update again or will that screw things up at this point?......................

When I restarted I got a blue screen saying "memory parity error". I restarted again the blue screen was gone, and it tells me a NIC adapter is having problems,
and asks me to press (S) to shut it off. When I tried pressing 'S' it didn't respond (more like it froze), so I restarted again.
This time I can finally boot into windows. But now my 'new hardware found' wizard went berserk, and kept on telling me there is new hardware found, non-stop. I had a look at my Device Manager and noticed the following had exclamation marks on it:
-OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 host controller
-intel pro/wireless 2915abg network connection
-Ricoh R/RL/5c476(II) or compatible cardbus controller
-SDA standard compliant SD host controlle .....

Shot in the dark, but does anyone know if it is possible to unbrick a bios update gone wrong on an old Dell Inspiron 6000 (or similar) laptop?
I've heard about the usb flashdisk/floppy recovery mode for newer Minis, but can't find anything for older models.

I have an Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop that has a Bios Password Set on it... and the password is not correct that we thought was the one for the laptop.... The password authentication system wont boot the laptop up until we enter the correct password... I have tried all the combinations that we thought the password is or was, but have not had any luck --- that being said the laptop is registered to me/ owned by me --- Can I provide the computer system tag -- that is shown on the screen and getting a reset password to overcome this obstacle.... The service tag is in my profile information and the computer system tag on the laptop bios password sign in screen is B*B*H*1-595B... I intentionally put the three * in the info, so I wouldn't compromise the service tag for my laptop for the world to see and use..

I was cleaning my computer and got it back together and had one of the HDD's die. I replaced it with a differany HDD, reformatted and installed the OS (Vista) but when I start it up the BIOS gets about 80% loaded and then next 20 takes 2-3 min. to load. It used to be much faster, within a matter of seconds. I tried reflashing the BIOS but that didn't change anything. Anyone have suggestions? Computer is the Inspiron 1720 in my sig.

On restarting 15R 5520, laptop just beeps forever (bout once a second). First time it happened it was after laptop had been running for about 3 hours. I tried removing battery etc. Eventually it started up. a few weeks later when I rebooted/cycled power, again nothing but beeps ... Today same thing, laptop was not hot, it had only been on a few minutes, and I decided to reboot .... beep beep beep ..... again after many different tries it powerd up .

No matter how many times i restart the labtop, it will first go black screen with dell log, then "resuming windows", then goes to the "logging off.." screen and stays there FOREVER. I tried to use both battery or AC power but they are just the same. I can adjust the lightness of screen using my keyboard but I cant see my mouse pointer anywhere on the screen so i cant click on anything.

I'm trying to understand why my new Inspiron 15 7000 series takes so long to start after being put to sleep as I don't believe it should take this long.
The power settings are configured to go into sleep mode whenever the lid is closed or the power button is pressed. If, after closing the lid, I re-open the lid within a short space of time, the laptop bursts into life almost immediately. However, if it is left longer, then when opening the lid, nothing happens and I have to (briefly) press the power button. It then takes about 30 seconds for the windows desktop to appear. This is simply too long!
I've also noticed that if the laptop is left idle and it "powers off", which is set to sleep mode then it again takes about 30 seconds to resume when pressing the power button.
The laptop is running Windows 8.1 64 bit and has 8gb of RAM and an i7-4510U CPU.
I have a 5 year old Acer laptop running windows 7, which is faster at starting from hibernate mode than this Dell Inspiron, which suggests that the Dell is actually hibernating, however none of the power settings are set for it to do this.
How to get this Dell Inspiron to start in a reasonable time from sleep mode as 30 seconds is not acceptable.

I am having a problem whereby it takes ages for my caps lock to go from capital letters back to normal & vice versa.
The little bag with the A coms on then you have to wait a few seconds for it to click off then you can start to type again.
I had this problem when I first got the laptop & it rectify itself but now the dreaded thing is back again, as I remember it was a problem as I remember someone mentioning something about the same problem before.
Either email or office its still the same. I am forever using the shift button to get around this problem...

I have a 3 year old Inspiron 6000. A few months ago I left it sitting on the couch and it overheated and shut itself down.
Fair enough, it's happened before. Except now the fans will not stop running on full speed.
I recently reformatted the computer, and reinstalled Windows and all the drivers, and it's still doing it.
I installed a temperature and fan control program and it shows the CPU temperature at 85 degrees steady, the CPU speed at 217 MHz (its a 1.6 GHz) and the CPU load is constantly spiking between 0ish and 50-75% .....

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that boots up on full brightness, and won't dim down.
When you push the FN key,and the up,and down arrow, the screen starts to dim down a notch, but doesn't dim down like it should. The LCD was replaced before I received it because it was broken.
Could it be a bad LCD?Wrong LCD?Something wrong with the motherboard?I tried another LCD,inverter,and video drivers,but it didn't help.The keyboard works fine,so
I don't believe it's that. The only parts left to try are the LCD cable, keyboard, and the motherboard

Dell Inspiron 6000 with Dell diagnostic error code 3700:011B
Fan runs at low speed, but there is no high speed. So the notebook works for many things, but I have to watch the temperature.
Dell tech suggested updating the BIOS, which I did.
Then I replaced the fan, using excellent instructions on Dell's web site. No small accomplishment for this notebook. But I still have the same problem. There was no dust inside .....

I've got a 4-year-old Inspiron 6000 with 256 MB of RAM. I really don't know the first thing about laptop hardware, so I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me answer.
My laptop has been running pretty slowly for a while now. I don't play video games or do much that would require a lot of memory, although I suspect that Norton AntiVirus slows things down a lot, and iTunes as well (although I don't know that for sure).
Since I only have 256 MB of RAM, I'm wondering if upgrading by adding 512 MB, 1 GB or 2GB would help much/at all. If so, my other questions would be: how much should I get? What specifically should I buy (brand name, model, anything--cheapest would be preferable)? And how do I install it?

I just recently tried to power on my Inspiron 6000 and I got no display. The num lock, caps lock and another green light all lit up together briefly and that was it. The hard drive light blinked a couple times indicating the hard drive was trying to work, but nothing happened.
I put my ear to the laptop to see if I could hear the fans running and it appears the fans are on. The power button stays illuminated, so I know the laptop is on. The laptop just won't go through it's boot process at all and the screen is blank.
I just got my laptop back from Dell right before Christmas and the extended warranty expired the day after. They were fixing some cosmetic issues such as missing keys from the keyboard, the palm rest, etc. They also checked the functionality and performed all necessary changes to ensure my laptop was working properly as I purchased the complete care warranty initially.
I had just ordered new memory for it right before it stopped working. I have received the memory, but now the laptop doesn't work. I only had 512mb of memory originally so I ordered 2 Kingston 1 gb sticks to install. I've done some reading online and it seems my problem could be anything from a bad motherboard, memory, video card, etc. I don't want to post a novel but I can provide more info about the functionality of the laptop before sending it to Dell, if needed.

I have been trying everything to get the sound to work on this Dell Inspiron 6000 of my son's (he's in Iraq) and despite my best efforts and even the efforts of the IT guy here at a networks company in the silicon valley.
We could not get any sound no matter what and it says there are no sound devices installed even though it lists the SigmaTel C-Major audio driver in Device Manager.
The IT guy says he has never seen something like this so I am wondering if a format and fresh install of Windows XP is in order? It seems my only option.

I bought this in 2005 and used it since then. One day I left it on and went away for couple minutes and the screen turned black when I came back.
I thought it was in hibernation but after restarting, the screen is still black. I can connect to my LCD TV via VGA cablle and see it fine.
If I turn off all the lights and shine a flashlight into it, I can see the desktop with all icons on it in super dark background.
I don't smell anything burning. So my question is what's really wrong with it? My guess is either the blacklight or the inverter

I have an Inspiron 6000 from a colleague. His report was "my daughter spilled (coffee?) and it broke".
Turning on, I see the LCD has the image but the backlight is not working (a few times it flickered on for a second). External video works fine.
I opened the thing, did not see obvious spillage signs.
Bought an inverter from eBay, replacing it did not fix the problem. If anything, the "sometimes flicker on for a second" stopped to show up. Had the eBay dealer replace the inverter as DOA, the second one didn't work either.
I guess it's not the inverter
What's the next step? Should I be going after a motherboard (following the spillage lead) or a screen? Or try the backlight specifically?
Is there a way to measure the inverter output and see whether it's alive? "Yes" would point at the backlight. "No" would point at electronics, in this case the motherboard.

My 3.5-year-old Inspiron 6000 is really slowing down. I really only use it for Web browsing, iTunes, Word, etc.
Is it nearing the end of its lifespan, or will more RAM (currently have 512MB) speed things up and keep the computer running well for a while?
If I'm due for a new laptop anyway, I'd rather just replace it now before it crashes or something.

The inverter flaked out in my Inspiron 6000, so I ordered a new "compatible" (same part number/specs, different design) inverter, which does work, only if the LCD is outside of the chassis.
Once the LCD is placed back into the chassis, something grounds and the inverter does not work. Once I take the screen back out of the chassis, it works fine. I'm not sure what could be grounding it or causing it not to work

I wiped my old Inspiron 6000. Re-installed XP. Can't get online. Using this mac I'm posting from now, I went onto Dell.com and looked for drivers. I downloaded the network drivers,
put them on my Inspiron via USB, and it beeped and said the driver does not support my hardware.
In fact, it said this for most of the drivers I downloaded from Dell. I am sure that I have an Inspiron 6000 and that I went to the Inspiron 6000 drivers page of the Dell site.

Moving on, I bought a Dell Inspiron 6000 from a guy. This one has the Mobile Intel Pentium M 760, 2000 MHz, 1015 MB (DDR2-533 DDR2 SDRAM), and the Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family (96 MB) onboard video.
So i noticed a lot of stuf was on the laptop and got tired of removing stuff and decided just to format. Got all the updates, etc stuff and went to intel for the video drivers for the onboard video. Well none will install period, the ones off dell is the only ones that will work. Fine i can live with it, it works good enough for now. But i cannot figure out why it only has 8mg shared ram. How the world do i change it from 8mg ram to something else. As in the bios i don't see any setting to change for this. And i'm not sure if dell has a hidden bios key or not.

I"ve got an 8 year old Inspiron 6000 laptop. It's old, but it seems like it's still in pretty good shape. Except that just recently, it lost its mind and doesn't recognize that it has a wifi adapter. I'd like to reload the OS, but I think this laptop came without OS and driver CDs. I think the idea back then was that you would go to the website and download that stuff if you ever needed it. I have the Service Tag number, but when I use that, I don't get any options. Warranty expired and all. How I can reload the OS on this machine?

I came home lastnight to my laptop turn off. I thought this was odd because it is hardly ever turned off. When I went to turn it back on nothing happened. I then notice that the gree light on the charger was also off. So I unplugged the charger from the wall and the computer, then plugged it back into the outlet. Now the green light is on, however when i plug it into the laptop the green light turns off and I have nothing from the computer. Seems like I have an electrical problem here. Anyone heard of this happening before or have any advice. The computer is about 5years old so I no longer have a warrenty.

I checked the Dell site to see if it had any part #'s listed for possible replacements but the only thing it shows was a HDD recommendation.
