Dell :: Latitude Getting Slower By The Day
Feb 4, 2009
Weird phenomenon occurring over the past two months or so, my 6400 seems to be getting slower.
Right now, I have two tabs open in Firefox and am listening to a song on iTunes. However, my CPU is jumping from 65%-100% and the words in this post are coming up on the screen about 3 seconds after I type them.
I have 4mb's of RAM, Core Duo/9400 and im on a Cable Modem.
Web pages are coming up slow, when I drag a window to another screen it lags...everything is lagging.
I checked my Task manager and the numbers are all over the place. Some are "SVCHOSTS"; there are over ten of them and some are using 2% of my CPU while other jump between 10 and 20% of my CPU. Between those jumping all over the place and iTunes jumping too, its managing to use up most of my 4mb's.
It has boggled my mind how slow this laptop has been since day one, but its getting worse.

I have got a Latitude E6530 laptop with an Intel quad-core i7-3720QM CPU and 8 GB RAM.
The strange thing is when I use Firefox (with not more than 6 tabs) specially using gmail, after a while scrolling and browsing become very slow; even typing become slow. As I wrote the laptop is one of the latest generation. I can not realize where the issue could be.

When i started Fallout 3 and Crysis with the Hybrid SLI('Boost Perofrmance') turned on, both suggested low detail. Both games played very choppy(15 fps).
Then when i switched to the 9400m alone, both games recommended medium settings and ran fine (25+ FPS).
This has happened with both the 176 and 179 drivers.
When i turn on the "boost performance" these two games recognize the hardware as a 9200GS rather than a 9200 GS+9400.

I have noticed that sometimes my computer is running slower than normal... how can i fix this? what are some steps that i can take?
is it true that norton really does slow down computers?
if your computer is running slow, could that just be a result of windows vista (if you have the latest update)?

I've had a Latitude E6400 almost since it came out, so I've been dutifullly upgrading drivers as they've worked the bugs out. I'd like to keep up with the video drivers,
but I've noticed that the latest drivers for the Nvidia 160M are noticeably slower in Vista, particularly in window minimize/restore operations, than the original driver.
This is confirmed by my Windows Experience Index dropping from 3.5 to 3.3 on the aero video score. Has anybody else noticed this problem, or is it just my laptop? Anybody think of a solution? I've tried using the latest driver from the Nvidia site instead of the Dell driver, but the result is the same.

This laptop keeps getting slower and slower and I've tried everything and it's not making a difference. Seems to progressively get slower the hotter it gets. I have run virus scans (all fine), malware scans (fine), de-fragmented it, cleaned up the disc, I have deleted unused/unwanted programs, I have cleared history options and stopped background programs from running. Nothing is working. I have checked the amount of memory/space and there's still plenty, I have run a temperature scan (Speccy) and that was within normal. Not only does it slow down where it takes forever to get from one window to the another, it will not open some things at all.Â
Like, now I can't use IE - I get an error message. When I came onto the Dell site, there was an option/link to diagnose your computer and that also gave an error message. I went to order something only a few weeks ago and that's when IE first gave me a problem - it wouldn't get me to the sign on screen. I downloaded Firefox and that allowed me to sign on but not check out. The rep at the company had me download Google Chrome and that finally let me process the order. I don't know what's going on.Â
I thought maybe there was something wrong with the fan, maybe the computer is getting too hot, but from what I've read online the computer will stop working altogether, not just move slower. I'm at my wits end. If it's not due to lack of memory space, nor a virus or malware, what the heck is this things problem? I had also contacted my internet service provider and they had me run a test and the download speed was fine so they said it's my computer.Â

Do slower processors give longer battery life? How much of an effect?
I'm looking to get a Studio and wonder whether I should consider a slower processor for that reason. If it bogs down under Vista, however, that's not good.
I want to get the 9-cell battery.

My notebook originally came with 2x512 MB RAM and a little while ago, I installed 1 stick of Kingston 2GB PC2-5300 RAM and I saw an improvement in its speed.
Just the other day, I installed another stick of an indentical 2GB Kingston, and now the boot-up and switching bertween program seemed noticably slower.
I don't know what is going on!
Also, another problem that poped up was that after every shut down, when the notebook boots back up, all my settings has been resetted to stock, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music etc has been cleared (although they remain in the HDD), but they come back after I perform a system restore.

I did a clean install of windows 7 earlier today and it's very slow even after updating and installing drivers. After using vista for quite a while, I'm not very impressed.
Vista was consistently very fast in everything I did but now windows 7 makes things slower with prettier interfaces.
Another thing to note is that when I installed the os, I made a second partition on my harddrive and when I did, windows created another "possibly necessary" necessary partition for system files. Now I have 3 partitions where the last one is using 100 mb of unallocated space and I cannot do anything to it.
I have a DV6-1253CA with duo core 2.0 GHz processor, 4 gb of ram, ati radeon video cared with 512 mb of discrete memory, and I'm using the 64 bit version of windows 7.

I switched from a Macbook 4,1
2.0ghz 800mhz FSB with 2gb of RAM (667mhz) x3100 to a newer macbook 5,1, same specs but 1066mhz FSB and the new nvidia card.
I used the migration assistant tool to transfer all account, settings and files to the new mac.
My computer seems to lag more when opening Word, Excel, Powerpoint 2008 and having multiple tabs on firefox and ichat, mail.app, and icalendar open.
My old computer did not lag this much, only a bit when opening one of the office suites but not while switching.
Shouldn't my newer computer with a faster bus speed be performing better?
Does the fact that I migrated settings and stuff affect performance? (same reason a clean install is better than an upgrade?)

I bought a toshiba, dual core pentium T3400, 2.16ghz, 3gb ram, 250gb HD...and it was lightning fast when surfing the web...but returned it because i got a killer deal on an HP DV5, core 2 duo, T5800, 2.0 ghz, 4gb ram, 250gb HD...
I was told by the salesperson, and a friend, that the new hp should be slightly faster than the exchanged toshiba. However, i noticed that the toshibsa was significantley faster than this one. I visited the same websites, and where the toshiba took 1 second to load a certain page, the new hp takes 3 seconds. Is this because of the 2.0 vs 2.16 ghz difference? bloatware?

do get the fact that speed through wireless is slower than with wire, but losing 50Mbps is a bit too much!

Bought a VGN-FW26 over the weekend (ATI HD3650, 2.40 Core Duo, 4GB RAM, Vista Home Premium).
On bootup, tried out a few games (mainly Fallout 3, Rainbow Six Las Vegas). Everything was running smooth, especially Rainbow Six at full resolution). This is with all the factory-included bloatware running.
I got annoyed at the bloatware, so performed a semi-clean install of Vista (ie. reformatted comp, reinstalled Vista, cancelled the installation process for the Sony programs ... then manually installed a selected number of programs using the VAIO Recovery Centre. These programs consisted several of the essentials from the programs list, and ALL the drivers).
Now, when I run the for-mentioned games, there's a noticeable increased lag for those games. I have even removed optimised Vista by disabling some unnecessary services, as well as made sure there are no unnecessary background programs running (e.g. McAfee)
In addition, I haven't been able to install the Catalyst Control Center, the VAIO Recovery Center only lets me install the ATI driver (I was thinking perhaps the lag in games is because my graphics card is running in a "maximise batteries" mode?) Is there anyway I can extract the Catalyst Control Center install from the recovery disks/drive?

The price of 2nd user Latitude D630's seems to be holding up quite well in the UK. Does this indicate that it is still a popular machine and favoured over the E6400?
I briefly checked out an E6400 the other day and for a choice between machines of approximately similar spec I would opt for the D630 rather than the newer E6400.
I would be interested in opinions from users who have experience with both models.

We are looking at getting some Latitude E4310 systems. Since fast boot up to access the web is important, we see that the Latitude On FLASH option is required.
The downside is that Dell will not install this along with the WiMax card option. They have a combo WiFi and WiMax card, but it can not be installed with the FLASH option.
They also list Latitude On ECM as an option instead of On FLASH. The ECM runs $149 more. With ECM, the system can then have the WiMax card which would be nice.
The people at Dell have not been able to provide a good explanation on what the ECM option does. There is a write up on the FLASH option, but not a good one on ECM. Does anyone know what the ECM does differently than the FLASH?
Key points of the FLASH option are (we need these functions):
Boot Fast, 8-10 seconds
Wi-Fi and LAN 10/100/1000
Web access via browser Firefox Browser
Supports Java and Adobe Flash
Read Microsoft Office
Edit Microsoft Office 2000

I've got a choice at the moment between two latitudes:
1) Dell Latitude D630: 2.2ghz C2D, 3Gb RAM, 120gb HDD, dvd/cdrw drive, vista, nvidia Quaddro GFX
2) Dell Latitude E6500: 2.26ghz C2D, 3Gb RAM, 80gb HDD, DVDRW, Vista,
Which do you reckon i ought to go for between the two?
The laptop will be used primarily between home and university, so will be taken between the two places in my shoulder messenger bag, so will probably take a few bumps

I bought this the other day for my Latitude XT:
http://www.amazon.com/32GB-1-8-inch-...4&sr=8-2-fkmr0
Wanted to replace the 4200rpm hard drive currently in there with something faster. I updated the BIOS to A09 (January 2010) to prevent any compatibility issues. I plugged it in and booted the computer, popped my Windows CD in, goes through the pre-load stuff. When it gets to the part about setting up (prior to where it asks about formatting and all that) I get a BSOD.
Sorry for the brief description but I'm trying to work on it while I type. Any suggestions? Do I have it plugged in incorrectly? What should I be looking for?
EDIT: I checked for the hard drive in the BIOS. There's not many options to see what HDD is detected. However, when my 80GB drive is connected it shows "80 GB drive". When I have the SSD plugged in nothing shows up in the BIOS for it. Does this mean the SSD is not compatible with my machine?
EDIT2: Forgot to mention their website claims it's compatible with my laptop:
http://www.activemp.com/SSD/18-IDE-P...SD-upgrade.htm
EDIT3: I sent them a "polite" e-mail about my situation and will let you all know if I have any success.

I'm pretty new to Dell notebook world. I was always told that Dell has a stinky customer service and their image wasn't that good around spot but care sharing whats good and bad about dell in general?
1- In the LCD option, it says touchscreen. Does that mean I can somewhat use this laptop like a tablet? ( Without the ability to twist the screen of course..)
2-Never knew whtas the different between 1dimms and 2dimms in RAM....
3-Compare Geforce 9400gs with the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD With PC-Card. Plus, what do they mean by "PC-Card" or "EXpress card" ?
4-Does Dell notebook actually give us 64bits windows or they're all 32bits unless they mention the option of 64bits?
5-Whats the difference between the normal e6400 model and the ATG model? Simply more durability +weight?
6- Whats an encrypted HDD or a ruggedized HDD?
7- I'll be using the notebook for design purpose. Such as photoshop, flash, illustrator or such. I'll be using 2-3 program at once with several picture/projet +internet + music. If my specs are 2.26ghz or 2.4ghz + 4gb ram + intel HD4500HD, will this notebook handle it?.............................

The laptop runs great, but now as it gets later in the night, things begin to quiet down.
As I sit here in front of the tablet in complete silence, there is a constant buzzing(kinda high pitched, you can't hear it over the fan when it's on) noise coming from what seems to be right under the touchpad, which is where the harddrive is located. Could it be the harddrive?
Any thoughts? And also, is there anyway to test this seeing as how I don't have another 1.8" drive to swap out with?
(I hope it's the HDD, seeing as how i plan to get an SSD soon)

I need to select a new laptop for work. My company allows Dell only.
Currently, I have a Dell Latitude D610. (yes time to upgrade).
I travel often. Therefore, weight is a factor. I'm not sure if I should go with the 14" or 15" screen. My current 14" seems OK. I need a laptop where I can use a port replicator. I believe that this limits my choices. Some of the models I like from a design standpoint don't seem to offer this.
So, I ended up with:
Latitude E6400
Latitude E6500
Latitude E5500
Latitude E5400
I couldn't really figure out what the difference is between the E5x and E6x.

I'm looking to get a laptop for college (i'll be starting in the fall). My intended major(s) are either: Biological Sciences/Biology, Spanish, or Business.
I want to go into Medicine. I'm not sure what kind of laptop I want, or what the best buy would be. I've grown up on Dell and have had one my whole life, I've never had a mac. Up until my good friend recently purchased a mac, I never really even considered one - but he loves his and it makes me want to get one as well. I'm not so sure as to what I'll be doing on the laptop other than the misc. school work.
Video Editing and graphics design interest me, but its nothing I'm going to be doing professionally, but it would be cool to mess around with. I talked to a guy at the apple store today and he said that if I was looking to do any big-time graphics and video editing that a macbook is not a good choice, due to the video card. What are some pros and cons of each (Dell Latitude v. Macbook)? Would a macbook be good for graphics and video editing?
