I have a friend that ask me to install XP on his Dell Mini 910.
I have a USB stick and follow the guide of this Youtube video.
However, when the usb finished loading files to the hard drives (the blue screen, you know), i booted with the USB again and choose the 2nd mode, the screen shown up there is a missing dll files and recommend me to reinstall the window.
I start it over and over, 5 times totally but samething happen.
My SMC PCMCIA adapter died a few days ago, and I'm really tired of dragging the cable with me as I move around the house. I can get a mini PCI wireless card from eBay [url]. It doesn't look like there's an installation CD in the eBay listing. Will I need a driver for it? What driver would I use? Also, is the antenna built into the card or would I need to add that? If I have to keep buying things to add wireless to this laptop, I'll just stick to USB, although I'd rather not tie up a USB port.

When selecting the repair windows option it loads windows files, but eventually comes back to the same screen. When I hit F8 for advanced boot options, none of the options, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last know good configuration, etc. do no workl. They will go through a progression but end up back to the winows could not properly start page. Dell sent me Windows 7 Starter usb installation and the resource discs. How do I initiate the install from the USB?

When building the machine from the options I've chosen the SUSE OS, that I plan to replace later with Oracle Linux. I've also eliminated all unnecessary hardware to reduce any incompatibilities and maximize the battery life which required deselecting Windows.

However, in terms of updating the firmware for the machine, no one does linux firmware updates which means that I have to have access to Windows OS, which means having to purchase a copy of W7 and somehow getting hold of the necessary HP downloads, hopefully free from the download area!

I've read a few articles that say that it is possible to use the 120GB mini-card SSD as a bootable drive as long as it is SATA and NOT PCI. The build options have the drive as a SATA which is also confirmed in the QuickSpecs document as well as it being a SATA3 / 6GB/s.

Whether the mini-card SSD can actually be used as a boot drive?
While I was almost a 100% certain my next laptop would be the asus ul30jc, I just saw the folowing laptop in a local advertisement and I must say i'm tempted (being a student, I use almost all of my free money on vacation, food and alcohol so every saved € counts):

So I have a few questions. First and most importent of all, I need to know how long the battery will last, if its +7 hours i'm content.
Second, I have no idea what kind of wifi I need, I use that white Belgacom Digital TV Router so perhaps my fellow Belgians can help me on this? When I use system information it says my wifi in my current laptop is A/G/N.
Third, will I be able to install the newest microsoft office programs (I have 2003, 2007 and will most likely buy 2010 aswell) on windows xp home?
Last but not least, will I see a big difference if I upgrade from 1gb of 2gb of ram? I noticed a big difference on my current laptop when I upgraded my ram, but since that hp compac has a very weak processor, it might be pointless since that cpu might bottleneck the effect?
For anyone waiting to buy a Mini 9 or Mini 12, the price of the Mini 9 is now $299 and the Mini 12 is $399.
I think this is going to make the Mini 12 a much better offering for those that might need a little bit more screen and hard drive.
I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two other than the casing (one's metal and one's plastic). The 2140 uses a SATA connector vs a PATA connector. So for $25 extra(lowest config 2140 vs highest config 1000) you get a metal case and SATA connector?
Why would anyone buy the 1000? Am I missing something? Oh and the 2140 has a higher volatage adapter for 'fast charging'...what's left for the 1000?
I've been looking a getting a Dell Mini 9 or 12 and reading as much as I can. One thing that comes through over and over again is that the Mini 9 is just about built to be hacked and upgraded while the Mini 12 is not.

Mini 9 is easy bring to 2GB with inexpensive RAM
Mini 12 has1 GB RAM soldered to the motherboard and is not upgradeable.
Drives
Mini 9 uses SSD. SSD drive replaceable with even larger faster SSD drives.
Mini 12 has 4200 rpm hard drive.
The processor of the mini laptop is atom N450, i want to know can i install windows server 2003 32 or and 64 bit os on this machine.

Is there a guide to do just that though, get rid of all the stuff that shouldn't be there so that you essentially have a clean install without all the bloat or footprints of it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't install my integrated webcam. After downloading the driver and opening the file installation starts and then suddenly it just ends with the message there was an error during installing.
So the thing I've done are: installing the drivers, which failed.
I've also looked in the device managemer app but could find anything of a camera.

I bought a XPS M1330 iwth Vista Home Premium Bios A07 in January 2008.
April 2008 I tried to install updates and it messed up my Microsoft Office 2007 so I got it back working and did not mess with anymore updates.
Around June 2008 I started having the notorious battery issues. The battery ran down while I was on it and the battery has never worked since. At first it said connected,
but not charging but then it eventually died while I was trying to fix the problem and now it says battery not detected and it says the ac adapter is not recognized (I have the original AC adapter sent with the computer) .....
I replaced hard drive with SSD and installed windows 7 ultimate (X64) on my HP Pavilion G4 notebook. However, I am not able to install switchable graphics on my laptop now.

I have tried this
1. Installed HPSA and ran update and tuneup. It asked me to update "AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver" but it failed with multiple retries and after some time now it doesnt ask to do this update at all. Now everything is green in HPSA but I am still not able to switch the graphics
2. Tried to download from HP drivers page but it says "AMD Catalyst Mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible harware/software on your computer"
3. Tried uninstalling the driver but windows updates the drivers automatically.
4. I also updated BIOS as suggested at [URL] ..... but still no luck......

I have had an aspire 5920g for about 18 months now and it was all working fine until I updated the graphic drivers, but the drivers stopped installing halfway through and now I can't install any graphic drivers.
I tried to install my original drivers and they won't install. The system keeps freezing and I think thats the problem.
I've tried making a recovery disc but erecovery won't recognize blank DVD's and acer 'support' are only too happy to grab you by your feet, turn you upside down and let all your money fall out so they can charge you for a reovery disc - absolutely ridiculous - instead of actually trying to help me.
And also for some reason a yellow triangle appeared next to the ACEYTS4Y IDE controller a week after I got it but up until now didn't seem to cause any problems.
Doing a clean install of Vista and keep getting prompted to locate and install driver for "Coprocessor". Have looked in device manager (yellow mark) but I just don't know what it is. Windows says it can't locate software for it.
Don't know what I am looking for on Acers site under drivers, installed all other stuff OK, Realtek, NVidia etc. Could it be a modem driver. Properties in device manager give no clues, it's listed as "other devices" along with the webcam which I have to sort drivers out for too.

I also dont know that how to launch that window in which i can change the boot priority. In my pc that i use in home i press del after starting my computer and a window comes where i change my boot priority and then boot from cd windows xp and install it. But in this case i dont know how to install xp. and my next question is that can i play cd in DVD-Dual double layer.
I've been eyeing the Mini 9 for a while, but really can't find a good justification for pulling the trigger on one.
I was wondering what other people use theirs for? Can it handle a Power Point presentation? Does it have enough entertainment value to keep you from getting bored on a long flight?
Has anyone actually tried to solder a PCI-E slot into a 10v? I know it can/has been done on the 9, but has anyone tried the 10v?
The reason i ask is because of the Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator which helps play streaming hd,i am sure there probably isn't or one of you guys would have already tried this but it never hurts to ask.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI got a 4gb Mini 9 with Ubuntu and love the thing to death, but right from the beginning it would always stutter when I was on the internet. It happened a lot more when I was looking at flash things (games, youtube, ect), but even when I was scrolling through a forum it would just stop... and then pick up again but scroll all the way down if I was scrolling (it would catch up).
Maybe it's the RAM since ojly had 512mb. So I ordered 2gb (which i wanted anyway), but this didn't help at all.
Then I though, hmm, maybe it's Ubuntu (Ive heard that Adobe has bad Linux support) so I installed XP and honestly I like it more than Ubuntu, but anyway... yeah it's still stuttering, although maybe less Ican't really tell though.
Is this just something I have to live with? Are all of yours doing this? Or is this a bad SSD or maybe a faulty laptop in general?
I really want to get this fixed as I LOVE the thing so much and just want to have this fixed.
Note: This is only happening with a browser open as far as I can tell. I ran Eclipse and was coding for a over 15 hours since I got it and it didn't stutter once when I was doing this. This is both when I am wired at school, using the school's wireless, or at home using our internet (wired and wireless)
I just went on the Dell website and I think that they stopped producing the Mini 9. I suppose that the Mini 10v has replaced it now...
If I'm not mistaken, that's the first netbook to die. (apart from the never good cloudbook and first gen eee's)
I always thought that system was a cute little one. I was attracted to it for some reason. I'm sorry to see it go. I wish they offered more HDD / SSD space though.
I haven't seen mention of the recent announcement that Dell is discontinuing the Inspiron Mini 12. It's hardly a shocker, but I'm wondering if Lenovo's IdeaPad S12 will fare much better?

I just ordered a Mini 9. It was $229 and I couldn't resist. Only thing is, it has Ubuntu.
I haven't a clue how to run Ubuntu. It was suggested to wipe the SSD drive and re-install Ubuntu fresh and get rid of the crapware. I checked Dells, driver and download page and all the drivers are for Windows XP. Nothing is listed for Ubuntu.
I received a new in box (sealed) Dell Mini 9 as part of a promotion. I get home and plug the beast in to find that it does not charge the battery at all,
I have tried reseating the battery but to no avail. Also if I plug the computer in a certain way it does not power on, I have to remove the plug and then plug it back in.
So to recap, the battery does not charge, the light does not come on and sometimes I have to plug the power plug in several times to get it to turn on.
Before I call Dell support should I mention anything about receiving this Mini 9 for free or does it not matter?

In 2010-01-11, I used it without AC and there were flame and smoke in the mini 9.
The fire was immediately extinguished.
the dell Maintenance Engineer had checked it and found the cable in LCD had been burned and a chip in the motherboard was damaged
Ive got a dell inspiron 1525, ive replaced the internal wifi card with an atheros based wireless card. But i was now wondering if it was possible to put the original wireless card back in aswell.
The laptop has 3 mini pci-e slots under the cover on the back but the ones remaining had wan and u?? writen on them, but i did not know if the writing was to help less computer senced people
how to disassemble a Dell Inspiron Mini 12
First get 1 small + screw driver
and 1 pair of latex gloves(to prevent ESD)
1-Take your Mini 12 and flip it upside-down
2-Un-Screw all the screws on the bottom. NOTE: There is no need to map out where each screw belongs because they are all the same.
3-Remove the bezel above the keyboard
4-Unscrew the 2 screws above the keyboard holding it down and remove the keyboard
5-Detach the wiresfrom the motherboard, leading from the top of half of the base(power, sound, touchpad, and antenna's)
6-Remove the top half of the base
Now that you have opened up the laptop, you can look at all the components and clean it with canned air(if necessary).
