Dell :: New Vostro 1700, LCD Looks... A Little Off
Aug 3, 2007
I just got my new Vostro 1700 with the WUXGA panel, and something just looks.... well, I don't know how to explain it. The left edge of the screen, about an inch in or so, just looks... a little... I guess washed out might be the proper term. The colors don't look as bright, and I feel as though I can almost... see the pixels refreshing or something...
Is this a problem, or a known issue, or something I should be concerned about?
My Vostro 1700 just shut off last night and it seems dead to me, just checking that there is nothing else I can try to try and revive it.
basically all that happens now is the power light flickers for a few seconds and then the battery indicator and then it just goes off. The hard drives don't spin up and the screen doesn't come on......
I see that nvidia has released several new gpus. I wondered if any of this would be compatible with my Vostro 1700 in the PCI slot (it should be a MxM system). if not, how can I make my lap compatible with newer video cards? what parts must be changed?
i need to upgrade my processor (T5600 at 1,6ghz) and i read here than the ideal processor is T9300, but is lot more expensive than T9400 or T9500. I some forum speak about this processors aren`t compatible with Santa Rosa chipset...
what about Bus speed (800 vs 1066mhz) i'm confused about that. I'm in Chile and here is really expenside this processor (T9300 U$500). Newegg don't sell to international consumers...
amazon is ideal for me because i buy a lot of time there . the option are T9500 U$370, T9400 and 9600 U$340, T9300 U$450!!!!, T8600 U$218

First, for any Vostro 1700 owners: anyone done a dual-250GB config either factory or upgrade?
Second, how far can I take my non-SATA 9300? I've been reading some of the parts-swap threads and getting some ideas, as shown in my sig. What's the top CPU I can drop in, and was there a 9300/XPSGen2-compatible (well, retrofittable, anyway) version of a GeForce Go 7800GTX? Also, anyone using Sound Blaster Audigy Software Edition on one of these big beasts?
-What is the maximum CPU available? A: These laptops support Penryn which means that the Core 2 Duo T9300 and even the Core 2 Extreme will fit in this machine, although the latter is not available from Dell as an option when purchasing these laptops.
-What is the maximum amount of RAM supported? A: 4GB, but Vista 32bit only recognizes 3.581GB. To take advantage of the full 4GB, you need to upgrade to a 64bit OS.
-What is the best video card available? A: The 8600MGT is the best one available from Dell so far.
-Can I upgrade the video card? A: As of right now the 8600MGT is the best video card available for these machines, although if you have the 8400MGS you can upgrade to the 8600MGT. If you have the Intel graphics unfortulately you cannot upgrade them.
-Do these laptops have a DVI port? A: Unfortunately they do not have DVI ports.
-Can these laptops be ordered with Windows XP? A: The Vostro 1700 can be ordered with XP but unfortunately the 1720 cannot. Dell will stop selling Genuine Windows XP on June 18th.
-What is the best hard drive available? A: 320GB is the biggest you can go atleast if you order it from dell.com I'm sure that websites such as NewEgg have better deals on bigger drives.
-Is Blu-Ray available on these laptops? A: No, at least not from Dell.
-How do these laptops do when it comes to gaming? A: I can play Crysis on near-max settings in DX9 mode. DX10 mode is playable but the settings have to be pretty low. Games like Gears of War and Bioshock can play perfectly on DX10 Mode and X-Plane 9 can play fantastic with everything topped out.
-What is the best screen available for these laptops? A: WUXGA with TrueLife
-What is the best warranty available for these laptops? A: 3 Year ProSupport for End Users and 3 year NBD On-site service
-Would I recommend purchasing one of these laptops? A: Definitely because I think you get a lot of computer for the money.
My friend bought a Vostro 1700 a few years ago and now i own it, but in the last 6 month or so the temps are going through the roof, i switch it on and it starts off at about 72 degrees then just goes up to about 86 and stays there, i cleaned the fan, the vents and even put a new blob of thermal paste on the cpu but it still does the same. I just did the Dell PC Diagnostic test and it says there are no hardware problems at all..
I have a 5 year old vostro 1700 and happy with it because it's been good to me ever since , but yesterday, when i tried opening it, yes it's powering on but it won't boot, nothing on the screen, I've tried interchanging memory cards and hard drives and it won't open at all.i'm thinking if the motherboard is the main problem or the processor itself. but i'm not really sure about it.
I have a Dell Vostro 1700 that ran fine with Adobe CS2 then I upgraded to CS4...
now xp takes ages to boot up and load applications - I even tried a fresh format and upgrading ram to 3GB.. -
Currently I am considering upgrading my processor from a T7250 to a T9300(or T9900) - Would upgrading the processor solve my problem and make my computer run super fast? or do I need to get a new laptop?
I've installed Windows 7 on my 1700, and it's all installed fine. I have the latest video drivers from nVidia, and all the others from Dell.
The only thing that I'm not sure about is that under Device Manager for the actual monitor (on the laptop) it just shows as generic PnP monitor. Should it not have a specific drivers for best results?
I want to upgrade the DELL vostro 1700 video card (8600M GT). I was thinking for a GeForce Go 7950 GTX (possibly SLI) or a 8800 GTX (again, possibly SLI). Perhaps evena Quadro FX 3500M could be suitable (if there are modifications of drivers in order to play with games).
I have two seperate questions to ask, so will post them seperately.
I have a Vostro 1700 with a 250gb drive in it. When I bought it I had a problem with the laptop and managed to get a hard drive caddy free from Dell, so just need the drive. I know it needs to be a SATA 2.5 drive, but will any drive fit, or do I need to go for any specific ones? Is the Vostro SataII?
I've followed the instructions for the system restore / format HD, but when I press F8, I do not get the option to restore etc...its just takes me back 'home' to the start up page.
I have all my reinstallation disks from purchase - is there any other method I can use? I need to reformat and restore ....
I'm having a few problems with the web cam software in my Dell Vostro 1700 laptop.
When I run the web cam manager it displays video fine, but as soon as I start to record video it crashes, saying livecam.exe has stopped working.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it's still no good.
Any ideas? I've not used it for quite some time, so don't know how long it's been like it. Alternatively, are there any other good free apps that let you eaily record video on a web cam?
I also have Skype and MSN Messenger installed, but wouldn't have thougt they'd have done the damage (as it's only when I try to record that it crashes).
im not sure if i want a graphic card in it, as it would just eat battery life and i would get nothing much out of it, since i have no plans in gaming with it.
i will be, however massively watching movies, and streaming movies (99.9% of the web, not dvd player) would that need a dedicated graphic card?
i would also like to know which are the best in terms of :
price, screen quality, build quality, weight, which ones have the same keyboard, current known issues, and are they any rumors or known news of any updates of any of these models in the next 6 months worth waiting for?
ive also bought a m1330 a few months back, but since i had some issues with school, i had to return it and delay my purchase to this year.
the laptop was getting extremely hot, like not even possible to put on my lap kind-of hot. is that issue fixed?
For those who own the V13. Do you miss having HDMI? How's the build quality on the V13? And with the Vostro 3300 out now, the Vostro 3300 would be a better buy, no?
Actual translation should mean "ships on the 14th" assuming that means December.
Update1:
- Ah, available in the UK and Australia also. - Don't see the C2D option on the UK page, looks like it's still being updated. (LINK) - Top spec option on AUS page @ a pricey $13xxAUD. Laptops are abit more expensive over there. :-/ (LINK)
