HP/Compaq :: HP ENVY 15 Gen 2 Noise
Feb 14, 2010
I just bought a HP ENVY 15 11xxtx series and have a few quirks that you guys might help me out with.
There is a high-pitch morse-code like sound coming from the front grills of my envy. I have gone through 3 units with the same problem and am tired of replacing it again. I just have to accept the fact that this might be a design problem. Anyone else have this annoying sound.
It is definitely not a Hard drive whirl nor is it the fans. It seems to be coming from the left CPU side. On one of the units, I did a SSD upgrade and the sound is also still there. It gets pretty obvious when i scroll down a webpage (It sounds pulsating) or do any task that either accesses the HD or is CPU intensive (Morse-code like sound) .

hp envy 15 touchsmart j101tx.My problem is that whenever the fan is on,a whistling sound comes from the notebook. The sound is very annoying and quite loud when the fan is at full speed. After sometime I realised the sound is caused by a white cable passing above the fan when air passes through.

I have owned my hp envy 17 laptop for almost 2 years now. Recently my computer has been making a really loud noise and it seems it is working a lot harder than it needs to be. I suspect the fan or the hard drive is the culprit but I have convinced myself it is the hard drive.Â
Â
When I start up my computer the loud noise begins almost immediately after startup. This noise sounds like the computer is working as hard as it possibly can, almost making a grinding noise. Even after the computer has booted up, this noise continues for another minute or two before it stops, then my laptop becomes quiet. What puzzles me, and leads me to believe it is the hard drive, is the fact my computer get unreasonably hot when the noise occurs; it never used to do this before.Â
Â
This situation is something I have never heard of before. My laptop for some reason ,when it is moved or bumped, even the slightest, start to "rev" and the hard drive roars; it does this for five minutes or so. It also does this when the laptop is closed, and in "sleep mode"; the slightest bump lets it off like a baby. I suspect that there is a switch, flap or wire that is not attached properly and when moved it triggers the hard drive.Â
Â
The main thing I do when the sound occurs is I close the laptop lid which puts it in sleep mode and turns off the hard drive, silencing it for the time being. This solution I came across by accident; I turned my laptop sideways when the sound occurs and the sound stops until I put the laptop upright again(Laptop is open).Â

I just bought a DM1 and noticed that the fan is always on, even when i run on battery and is doing nothing but idle on the desktop. The fan is pretty high pitch and therefore pretty audible.
I just read on other posts that Speedstep is actually a bluff on the SU2300, it doesn't trottle clock, thats probably why the fan is on even when idling on battery.

I just recently purchased the HP HDX 16 and the fan seems to be louder than most laptops. I have done my research on the internet and it seems like some people have this problem and others don't.

The CPU noise(high pitch hissing/buzzing/whining) especially when the CPU is in idle status bothered me. I tried the little software RMclock, It reduced the noise but did not eliminated it. I had to return 3 HP dv5t laptops because of this flaw. After a lot of research, I realized this problem happens more or less on almost all laptops of different brands using all kinds of CPUs. It's just a matter of level of tolerance. Some noises are not audible except you pressed your ear again the CPU area and listen very hard to tell it from the fan noise.
I got an HP dv7t recently and loved it, but this CPU noises bothers me again, what is different from previous situations is that the CPU noises does not become audible until you plug in any USB devices, once the USB device is unplugged the noise just become much less audible.

I just got my 2530p. The problem with my 2530p is the fan noise. It is on constantly. I would think that the speed of the cpu fan should go up and down?

For the past few weeks my DV5 has been behaving oddly when booted up from a cold start. The fan switches on producing an incredibly annoying rattle and squeal that almost sounds as if a bearing has gone in it. It's the same noise you occasionally hear from desktop fans that are clogged with dust and gunk.
It usually lasts for only a few seconds on initial bootup and is all over by the time Vista loads.
However, this laptop spends 95% of its time on my desk in my dorm room, residing on an improvised laptop stand for better cooling. I took it into the shop I bought it from now that I'm home and whilst they were happy to look at it, it just wouldn't replicate what I had been describing to them when they were listening to it. Murphy's law I guess. Anyway, they thought the only way to sort it out would be to leave it with them and they would try it daily till it it reared its head. Not knowing how long it would take to get over its stage fright (and needing some information off it) I declined that offer!
Has anyone noticed similar traits or symptoms in their machines? If so, how did you remedy it? I'm really tempted to pull it apart myself but it is only 7 months old so well within the warranty period that I may put in jeopardy.

beats edition as compared to the envy 15 version.
1. What reason is there for the 800 dollar difference in price other than the beats headphones?
2.Does the back of the case only have the beats logo on it or is there any type of laser etching like on the original envy.

With Windows 7 about to drop, and HP rolling out with their new laptops (like the dm3t and Probook 5310m), I'm seriously looking at getting a HP to replace my old computer. However, I've been reading about there being a lot of Fan Noise problems with their laptops. Specifically, I've heard that the fan is always on and blowing, even when the laptop is idling. How prevalent is this, especially in the dm3 (for those already with one), and the Probook line (I'm looking at getting the 5310m)?

i have a presario c552us laptop and it recently started making weird noises around the fan underneath. i took a look and it seems to be coming from the fan. it sounds like some1 stuck something in there and its hitting the fan blades. doesn't happen all the time either. when the fan is spinning, sometimes its great(like right now) and other times it sounds horrible.
i took apart the whole laptop and cleaned out all the dust, especially in the heatsinks and fan assembly. it seems to spin fine when i use canned air on the fan blades. it has the normal high pitch fan spin without the grinding noise and what not.
not sure what the deal with that is, but maybe the fan has issues gripping or spinning itself.
so it sounds like i pretty much need to replace the fan and the motor.
can i replace just the motor and fan? or do i have to buy the whole assembly with the weird shaped heatsink?

i have a DVD+CD writer/reader in my laptop. I barely ever use it but i wanted to back up my iTunes library to a couple of DVDs this morning so i used Nero to do so. At 91% the drive started doing this thing where it would spin really quick, stop, start, make an awful grinding noise for a second, then repeat the same thing over again. After about 10 min of this, the CPU went up to 100% and slowed the computer down to the point where everything froze. So i tried ejecting the DVD but it didn't work so i used a pin to force it open. I tried 3 times on 3 DVDs with no luck..It did however burn a CD successfully which is weird.
I just tried burning another DVD and it stopped at 91% and started the grinding noise again then said the burning failed.

I just got an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop a few days ago and everything is great, except for this static noise coming from the speaker. It kind of sounds like when you have your TV on a blank screen, but you have the volume as high as it goes. Every now and then there's a little pop or crack sound too. Some important things to note:
- It was a refurb
- The noise immediately stops when the volume is muted
- All drivers are up to date
- If I go into the volume settings, I can slide the volume all the way over to the right side, and the noise stops, but any amount of volume going through the left side and the noise is back
- The noise is the same at any volume level
- If I plug in headphones, there is no noise through the headphones, it only happens on the speakers
At first I thought it wasn't anything big, just a driver update or just a matter of breaking the laptop in, but now after a few days it's starting to get annoying. I don't want to leave the sound on mute all the time, and even when I am listening to audio I can still hear this noise.

This thread will be very exclusive to those who may have an SSD in their HDX16T.
Particularly and Intel SSD X25-M.
Ever since I've got the intel SSD this HDX16t monster is DAMN quiet. And I mean not even whisper quite, its like the notebook is NOT-ON-quite.
That's how dead silent this notebook really is.
The thing/issue is that I began to notice that the monitor makes this constant buzz when it's on. And it only get louder when the brightness goes up.
It's not very loud at all. You'd have to put your ear about 3 inches away in order to hear it. But the fact that it does.
However, I would of never been able to hear the monitor noise with a regular HDD and I'd be totally fine with that. A regular HDD is way to loud now that I've been on SSD for a while.
But the fact that I can hear it makes it weird.
I can almost be sure that if you do not have an SSD, you'd not be able to hear what I am talking about. If you can hear it with a regular HDD, then your monitor must be SUPER loud.
Check back with me to see if you can hear this noise if any of youSSD users on the HDX16T out there.

I bought a new notebook, a HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx, everything was going ok, no problems at all, opened the box, charged the battery, formatted with a fresh Win7 installation. No problems so far. However, since the second day of having it, I began to notice an annoying high-pitched noise coming from the top-left area of the notebook.
The noise is not continous, it mostly appears only when I hover over the items in the start or context menus, and other selectable items as well, such as the minimize/maximize/close buttons of the windows. It is also audible when Windows is in the "Please wait... Booting up..." screen and when minimizing/maximizing windows.

I have had my HP HDX16 for almost a year, probably 10 months. I can still send it in for repairs because the warranty is still in place.
Recently the fan has started to make some funny noise and it sounds more like a grinding sound that is subtle but still noticable. I was thinking of sending it in for repair, but when I sent my computer in last time they formatted everything just to replace the screen when I told them not to, so I really would just see if I can repair the issue myself and save myself the trouble of having to reinstall and download everything again.
How easy will it be to take off the bottom to get to the fan? I already blew air into and that made it go from loud to subtle, but it seems like it might be grinding against something or hitting something. Sometime if I tap on the area to the top left of the power button it will stop it for a couple of minutes.

Here are the specs:

I tried using the hlt command in RM CPU clock utility, like many people have suggested, but the version I have does not even let me check the box. It is an option though, but the writing is in grey and cannot be chosen.
I was wondering if maybe there were some other options i could tweak to lessen the damn noise!
Under "advanced CPU settings" , I can choise the ACPI state to modifiy but there are the only options i could change:
Enable CPU low power
Enable Northbridge Low power
Enable FID/VID change
And i can change the clock divisor to the following:
8,16,32,64,128,256,512.....

if anyone has had sound issues with their DV5? I have the current bios F13 and have un-installed and reinstalled sound drivers and such. What is happening is the sound will randomly make a static boom noise and then go away and then do it again.. i have checked my external speaks and have even replaced them thinking it was them.. it is not since it is happening with my onboard speakers as well. So this static boom sound is a constant annoyance along with music sounding rather off/staticy..

I just got a new Elitebook 6930p and its a fantastic laptop other than the dreaded "CPU whine" as some call it. Most uneducated people believe it is the CPU that makes this noise but in reality this has NOTHING to do with the CPU. Its the power components like capacitors and coils that make the Piezoelectric Effect which causes the noise.
I could not bear the whine noise after a few days so I took matters into my own hands. Sure I read about stopping the C1-C4 states in Intels speedstep but thats not a proper solution IMO since battery life will suffer. So how can we mask or cover up this annoying noise? How can we seal it inside the laptop so it does not reach our ears? I have the solution!
tube.JPG
Seal it up all the power components with silicon sealer. Silicon sealer is perfect as it does not conduct electricity. These components do NOT generate any heat either.

GLOB IT ON!

OH YA! MORE GLOBING!

No more annoying whine noise! It really works!

I've got a great offer for buying a used 1st generation Envy 15, dirt cheap.
However, I was wondering if heat management and battery life has improved with driver- and BIOS updates over time.
In short, has any of the points of criticism that the Envy originally received been improved with driver and BIOS updates?

I'm shopping for laptops right now and I'm pretty much stuck between these two. My main question for the 14 is will it be able to do full hd? I know 1920x1080 is a bit much to ask for on a 14.5" screen but I haven't been able to find a solid answer for this question. The 14 has more features and the internal cd drive is a plus, but not a dealbreaker for the 15 since the cd drive isn't used too much. Taking out price, which one would be a better buy?

I have a couple of questions about the Envy v2. I'm certain the answers are somewhere in the massive owner's thread but it's way too long to want to go through at this point.
My questions are:
1) Audio quality of external speakers. Is there enough bass in them? Do they sound "tin-y"?
2) Noise from the fan when the GPU is in high use. How loud is the fan? Has anyone put a decibel meter to it?
3) Temp of the GPU. My Studio 15 is hitting a high of 70c when running and was wondering how the newer ATI is.

The first I heard about the Envy line was that it was a gorgeous laptop with a great display and above-average speakers. However, it was fundamentally flawed with a horrible trackpad and overheating issues(present in the 13, but further aggravated in the 15). After the spectacular fail of a release, I dropped the Envy out of consideration.
To the present, I've recently started looking at a huge array of laptops and have taken the Envy into consideration again. From what I've heard, the Envy 15 is in its second generation(I need a full-HD laptop and won't be considering the Envy 13). It now comes equipped with a i5 processor and the HD5830.............
