View 4 RepliesI'm wondering if the Blu-ray optical drive (Panasonic UJ-232A) of the (old) VAIO Z series will be able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series? I would really appreciate it if anyone is able to answer my question.
The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously thinking of selling my VAIO Z690 & just buying the base Sony VAIO Z (VPCZ112GX/S). I may just be able to afford that base model & the icing on the cake will definitely be the UJ-232A drive being able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series & work.
Am planning to get a sony laptop for me. The design simply rocks I am getting mixed reviews about cw and E series. But i made up my mind to get one.
My budget is aroung 40000rupees. Thats around 800$. So suggest me a better one between these two for occasional moderate and less(mosltly) demanding games. I dont care whether its 14 or 15 inch.
Am looking at lower end versions of both the models.
Only difference is CW uses Nvidia Geforce 310 and the E series uses some Radeon 5000 series one. CW has 14 inch screen whereas E series has a 15.5 inch screen. In the models which i am looking at both have matte finish and both has WXGA:1366 x 768 VAIO Display.
which one should i go for. whether the screen quality will be on par to Inspiron one atleast? ( I dont need HD).
im planning on using the laptop for videos, photoshop and a bit of gaming, maybe even a bit more gaming :-)
The Vaio F Series only has 330M Nvidia Graphics Card with i7QM and up to 8GB of Ram and up to 256GB SSD.
The E Series has ATI 5650 (a less powerful version, reduced clock speed) combined with a i5 520M with up to 6Gb of Ram and up to 500GB of HDD ? Why can i not choose SSD ?
I recently bought a Sony Vaio VPCS117GGB.
Specs: Core i5 520, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, Geforce 310, 2Kgs.
Coming from a Macbook Pro this laptop is quite similar to the unibody macbooks (except the size and battery life). However there are a few annoyances with this Sony.
1) When i close the lid the notebook goes to sleep, however when I open the lid, unless I press any button, windows does not wake up. Is there a way to enable this .....
I found this on a turkish website. I dont know any turkish but it looks like the specs on the new vaio VPC-EC series.

Finally pulled the trigger on a Vaio S Series CTO from SonyStyle Japan. I had a limited budget ($1500), and with the really poor dollar/yen exchange rate right now, couldn't load it up like I wanted.
Still, looking forward to the expected delivery date of late March. Here's what I got for $1,630:
- Core i5-540M (2.53GHz)
- SSD 128GB
- Windows 7 Ultimate (Need this to switch the Japanese OS to English)
- 2GB RAM (DDR3 1066) (Skimped here to keep the initial price down. Will probably add more later.)
- Intel Integrated Graphics (Don't do any gaming)
- DVD Super Multi-Drive (Optical Read/Write DVD Drive)
- 3-yr. Basic Warranty.....
The new Sony Vaio Z series only comes with SSD option for North America. Is there anyway to either replace the SSD with a HDD or to add a HDD after purchase? I need plenty of internal storage and even the 255GB SDD option in Z116GX/S will be insufficient.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure if anybody noticed, but Sony almost silently released new E type - EA.
It got 14" screen with LED backlight and 1600x900 resolution, i3-330M Processor, ATI HD 5145 Graphic card, 4GB RAM and colorful combination like EB.
Looks like the successor of VAIO G. And no, it won't be cheap

does anyone have or can find additional info on Sony Vaio X-series? it's scheduled to launch really soon sometimes next month but there's not much info on it other than initial specs and showoff pics. what i'm specifically asking for is the the HD form factor (1.8" or 2.5"?) and how many free memory slots? since it comes standard with a 64gb SSD, my assumption is that it can only take 1.8" form factor since sony most likely would not put a full blown SSD into something like this for two reasons: 1) chassis is too thin to fit a standard 2.5" drive, and 2) will run on the intel atom platform and as far as i know, all atom platforms are limited to SATA1 interface, which the transfer rates are caped at around 120mb/s read. it would be a waste to put a nice SSD in there with this limitation of SATA1.
from the pics, this thing is sexy as hell being so thin, small, and light. the biggest turn-off is that it will be chugging along on an atom processor. seriously... the ULV's are out now and sony will still be putting atoms in this? what sort of makes up for that is that it comes with a built in GPS and 3G connection. how i see this X-series is that it's only one glorified sexy netbook with tons of features for $1300. if they would only replace the atom with a ULV chip, i would buy this thing at almost any cost. if anyone finds any detailed info about this notebook,
specs i found:
- Intel® Atom™ Processor Z550 (2GHz)
- US15W chipset..............
Not announced officially yet, but take a look here at the German sonystyle:

I have a Sony Vaio Z790J. I recently tried to install Windows 7 x64 (from msdn) onto my Vaio. It always gets through the install but the second time it reboots (when it tries to start the services, etc) I go straight to a BSOD.
I tried changing ACHI, RAID, IDE, none of those make a difference. Has anyone seen this? Of course I blasted my backup partition too so I can't restore Vista x64. Nice move on my behalf
I just got a new sony vaio F-series with the new i7, it was really fast, took me about 2 minutes to get to startup screen and log in. But all of sudden after two weeks it started to slow down
( I didn't download much, and I scanned with both avg and adaware and no viruses or problems found).
Also, my gadgets instead of appearing on the sidebar like normal appear in the middle of the screen randomly.. I am extremely pissed because I have heard such good review
I just received my new Vaio Z11 laptop a few days ago. I'm very satisfied with my purchase as it's my first ultra portable laptop. I have the i7-620M version with the 1920x1080 screen and 256GB SSD (4x64gb).
I have a few concerns though:
First, Is it safe that I make a clean install of W7? My Drive came with a single C Drive partition but I'd like to partition my drive into C and D drives. Are there specific tools to use for SSD's?
Second thing is regarding the Fingerprint Scan. I have been able to apply it on Windows Logon, and have also set it for Power On mode, but unfortunately when I turn on my laptop it doesn't ask me for the finger print it only does that at the Windows Logon screen. I have checked the bios and saw nothing that has Enable finger print or something of that sort, there was just a clear finger print option.
This is the 1st time I'm gonna buy a laptop.
I have few questions for Vaio FW series:
1/ where to get manuals and detailed specs ?
2/ Does Sony deliver a CD with all needed drivers ....
Also, what graphics card is this model being paired with in other countries that already have the CTO available.

View 10 Replies View Relatedhow to upgrade my VGN-Z36GD to 8GB.
I've read through the thread "How to make 1st to 3rd Generations of Vaio Z support 8GB" and there are some promising leads there especially from ZugZug an Sniper_Sung but the thread kind of abruptly ends without a clear resolution.
Another thread indicates that the victory was celebrated too early and the 8GB doesn't exactly work.
I have a Solid State drive, which I would like to install in my Vaio VGN-NS30E, I cannot find a teardown guide anywhere,

Genuine Windows® 7 Home Basic 64-bit (English Version)
320 GB (Serial ATA, 5400 rpm)
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5470 Graphics (512 MB DDR3 SDRAM)
Ram 3 GB DDR3 SDRAMI want to buy it but before purchasing it,
I want to ask questions.
Can I run good games like Stalker trilogy , Crysis, Mercenaries 2, Rainbow Six Vegas series, FarCry2etc.?
And what about designing ?
In Desktops like now I'm using, I can draw freely and easily with mouse in Photoshop and Flash. If I have a mouse Can I do the same with This Vaio ? is the screen big enough for drawing etc. ? and the keyboard in this one is good enough for programming ?
I want to use this laptop 2-3 years or even more if it does work....flawlessly.
Does anyone have pictures or instructions to upgrade Z series wireless network card?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI know that many of us have been seeking an inexpensive third-party RAM upgrade for our new Vaio Zs. Fortunately, I've found a great solution. Not only does this module use precisely the same RAM ICs as the currently shipping Vaio Z11 8GB machines, those RAMs just happen to be manufactured by the world's largest DRAM manufacturer (by far), Samsung. This module has been tested for over a week, and it has truly been a completely stable solution. Plus, I don't suppose that it'll hurt to point out that this is the least expensive 4GB DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM module that I can find in the United States right now! Moreover, it's sold by a very reputable vendor, whom I trust - EWiz.com (they're still making the transition from their old name, SuperBiiz). They've got great prices, ship fast, and stand behind what they sell - no, I have nothing whatsoever to do with them, other than being a customer.
Rock-solid RAM that's the cheapest, too! For details behind all the testing that allowed me to finally post this, see this thread (which started off as a look into RAM speeds on the new Vaio Zs). To pick these up, check out the Super Talent 4GB DDR3-1066 Samsung Chip Notebook Module at EWiz.com - literally priced below any other 4GB DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM on Pricewatch, as of 3/30/2010!
The Sony Vaio F series was released in sonystyle retail stores across Australia just yesterday, and i have noticed that it does not include a backlit keyboard.
I was actually in the store today and was almost about to purchase one..
until i found out there was no backlit keyboard from the sales staff..... that was the deal breaker for me
