Sony :: Vaio ZDVD Drive Region Free
Apr 11, 2010
I've managed to unlock my dvd drive mata UJ-862AS to become region free (RPC-1)
Supported drives:
The tools work with Mata UJ-84x, UJ-85x, UJ-86x, UJ-87x, UJ-88x, UJ-89x drives.
Mata BD drives and the old UJ-81x, UJ-82x, UJ-83x drives are not supported yet.
According to Ala42 (Firmware Patcher),
1. The firmware dump tool reads the firmware from your DVD drive
2. It then generates 1 original and 1 RPC-1 patched firmware file
3. The flash tool allow you to flash these files to your DVD drive
4. As it uses the firmware from your DVD drive, there is no compatibility issues.
Take note that in order to playback a DVD from any region, 2 conditions need to be satisfied.
1. Hardware to be region free - RPC-1
2. software - e.g. anyDVD
Disclaimers: I am NOT liable if You managed to BRICK your dvd-drive for whatsoever reason, howsoever caused!

who opened I believe Z and connected a hard drive to dvd drive connector while leaving dvd drive in for cosmetic reasons. Can't find this thread. Where exactly can the hard drive go? Inside the tray?
I am afraid there will be too much vibration if I put regular HD there. For this reason I would rather put there SSD but is there a way to make this a primary OS drive? Seems like last bios allows to boot from optical drive.

I'm wondering if the Blu-ray optical drive (Panasonic UJ-232A) of the (old) VAIO Z series will be able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series? I would really appreciate it if anyone is able to answer my question.
The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously thinking of selling my VAIO Z690 & just buying the base Sony VAIO Z (VPCZ112GX/S). I may just be able to afford that base model & the icing on the cake will definitely be the UJ-232A drive being able to fit into the (new) VAIO Z series & work.

I have a Sony Vaio FZ445 which has problems with the Otiarc DVD AD-7560. What happens is that when playing audio, the sound skips playing CDs.
I have tried all the requisite diagnostics, like checking the IDE channels to see if the mode is DMA or PIO, and installing and reinstaling the drivers and firmware updates for the drive. It still happens and looks like I need a new DVD drive. I have XP Pro and Ubuntu 9 and it does this in both OS's (which affirms my suspicion that its not a codecs or driver issue). I have also always cleaned the drive every dozen uses too.
am I limited to using only a new Sony DVD drive to replace it? and... is it easy to replace these drives oneself?

All of a sudden my OPTIARC BD ROM 5500A drive does not recognize when a Blu-ray movie is inserted. I try to open the drive with a movie inside and it tells me to please insert a disc and ejects the drive.
I chated with the sony analysts and they told me to (in this order after the previous solution did not work):
1. Update WinDVD player
2. Reinstall WinDVD player
3. Update WinDVD player again
4. Restore my C: drive to factory conditions
5. Reset by BIOS
6. Take my laptop to a Sony shop and pay 600 dollars to get this fixed.
Everything points to hardware malfunction, but I find it weird that in my computer the drive is identified as a DVD-RW drive, when I KNOW that it used to be identified as a BD/DVD-RW drive.
DVDs and CDs play perfectly, but it acts like nothing is inside when I put in a Blu/RAy movie. In the device manager it is identified properly as an OPTIARC BD ROM, the driver it has is the generic CD drive windows driver (Sony support said that is what it should have).
Driver: cdrom.sys
File version: 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101/2205)

I bought the FW460J/T with $50 mail in rebate, and I also get a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Sony. I have a few questions regarding the Windows 7 upgrade:
1. Do I have to mail in the UPC bar code? If yes, it might be impossible because I have to send the UPC bar code along with the $50 mail in rebate.
2. Should I buy the full version of Windows 7 for a fresh clean install even though I get a free copy of the upgrade version of Windows 7?

I have a Sony Vaio SR190 with a 160gb@5400 rpm hard drive. I really want to upgrade this with more capacity. I have two main questions:
1) What Hard Drive brand is the best? I was looking at the Western Digital Scorpio and the Seagate Momentus, but I want suggestions on the BEST.

I was thinking about upgrading to a 7200 RPM hard drive for my VAIO SR190.
I'm sure this voids warranty, but in the event that you need to send the laptop to Sony, couldn't you just put the original back in and they wouldn't notice?

I was wondering if it was easy to crack open and upgrade the CD-ROM drive to another hard drive instead. Since customizing a TT is hellaciously expensive and the hard drives they offer are slow and not big enough -I would rather supply my own parts than what they have in stock

I've been having some difficulty with my vaio and am thinking about doing the F10 Vaio Recovery to restore the C: Drive. I'm not all that computer savvy, and would like to know from those who have done this what to expect. How does this work? What happens? Will I have to reinstall windows along with everything else?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a FW, but it has a 320GB 4200rpm. HD.
I've planned on buying a WD Scorpio Black later and the replacing it.
How complicated would that be? What I mean is, that I can do the hardware replacing and all that, but is it enough that I would do a recovery disc with the original HD inside and then replace the HD's and then just boot from the disc. Or do I need to fiddle around with the SATA drivers,

I just recently purchased a new sony vaio fw41e/h. And i've been using the blueray driver a lot for burning dvd's since it's capable of doing that. But since yesterday my drive just stopped burning dvd's and got no idea what might have caused it. I didn't find any errors or something when i burned my last dvd, which worked. I used the os it came with which is vista 32 bit. I don't think it's a hardware error because it can still read the dvd's but i just can't burn them. I also tried several different applications for burning, like clonecd, imgburn and nero but neither worked. For instance, when i use clonecd it just starts normally but after 30 seconds the bar raises up to 100% and just finishes and it said it couldn't burn it. for the people who wanna know what kind of drive it is, it is a mata bd-cmb uj130as.

if I can replace the optical drive in the Vaio SR590? It's a DVDRW, I want to put in Bluray. If Bluray drops in price, and I get a slim bluray drive, can I put it in the SR590? Looking at the computer, it seems the current drive's design is a bit different than a standard notebook optical drive. Seems like it will stick out a bit on the sides...

I'm considering a Vaio Z. I would have bought the latest one, but unfortunately the headphone plug is in the front which is a deal breaker for me as I most often use it on the treadmill to watch movies and it needs to "stand up".
So, when looking at previous Z's I noticed the headphone plug is one the side (as it should be. if you ask me). Blu-ray is a must and I want SSD. I found a few models with Blu-ray, but it seems that all models only have a regular 320GB hard drive, so my first question is:
- Does a Z of previous model with Blu-ray and SSD exist?
In case no such model exists I was thinking of buying the VGN-Z790JAB and replace the hard drive with a SSD myself. I was browsing this forum and found a few threads on the topic, e.g. these:...........

One of my "hobbies" is extending the life of older equipment. Especially when it is fairly good stuff, like my trust Vaio VGN-S360.
So I decided to overcome the 80gb limit imposed by the factory installed 2.5 inch IDE drive; a Fujitsu. I purchased a 320gb Western Digital drive.
The new drive works just fine, no bad sectors, etc.
However, somehow I forgot that there might be unanticipated limits to using a four year old machine .....

provide explanations or pics for the under keyboard removal on this Sony Vaio VGN-N150P laptop?
I can tell you that I've not found it in all the stickies... some of the models are 'close' but NO CIGAR. Google has not helped, seems like Sony has tried its darndest to BE UNHELPFUL. Even chatted with them, no joy.

Just pulled the trigger on a Vaio VGNTZ290NDB for $1,439 on clearance from Sony Style.
Seems like a nice unit.
Question:
This unit comes with a 64GB SSD (1.8" PATA) and a 250GB HDD (2.5" SATA).
Given the age of the model line, I'm assuming that the PATA SSD is not of the same performance level as the new SATA SSDs, e.g., Intel X25-M.
Would it be simple enough to put in an X25-M in place of the 250GB HDD and then make it the boot drive? Or is the system limited to booting from the PATA SSD?
A dual SSD ultraportable would be... well... sweet.

Sony VAIO VGN-NS140E/L. I've been wanting to replace my 250GB hard drive with a larger drive, but I can't find any instruction manuals/walkthroughs of how to disassemble it enough to make the swap.
I've read pages of other models, and followed it to the point of where I have removed the bottom screws and unhinged the keyboard, but now I can't figure out how to remove the plastic cover that is over the hard drive and other components (in other walkthroughs this part seems to be a seperate metal panel, not a plastic built-in part).
