I have to fix this notebook for a friend, but I don't know the HDD model or brand. I entered on the bios but it doesn't show. Is there anyway I can get it?
This notebook has hdd problems and I saw an UUID on bios, so here's another question: Is there anything I need to do before replace the hdd or only Sony can replace it?
With all the hand wringing folks have been doing about the lack of drivers for a clean install of Win7 I thought I'd jump in to the deep end of the pool with my FZ190 and investigate an alternative. My good friends Rajesh and Dr. Pratik have done clean installs of Win7 on FZ models, but I decided to take a different approach... the "dreaded" OS in place upgrade. Partly out of curiosity, I wanted to see if it would work, but mainly because I have a ton of software that would need to be reinstalled, if I did a clean install. That would mean days or weeks of inventorying every thing I have installed, digging up installation media and then installing all the stuff. I just don't have the spare time. So...
This past weekend I imaged my C: drive (all my data and I mean ALL my data is on D:, I am a fanatic about that). MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR C: DRIVE BEFORE YOU TRY AN UPGRADE! I ran the Windows 7 Update adviser and it said I had some issues:
Quote:
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT - NVIDIA Not compatible The driver installed for this device is not compatible with Windows 7....................
I am trying to upgrade to windows 7 with the free windows 7 upgrade kit I have both Cds and i put in the home premium windows 7 cd it starts up and tells me "run-time error 70' permission denied"
my laptop is Fw490jeb
I have noticed that when I try to run "model.txt" it does not show up and when I go to system it does not detect my processer and other things...
I am looking at purchasing a Sony FW, but was wondering if the gpu is upgradable to something like the new nVidia GTX 280 M, or even the new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850?
Also, I have searched on the internet to buy a mobile gpu, but google yielded no results.
Do I have to contact ATI/nVidia directly to obtain the certain gpu I want?
in the thread win 7 on z i expain what im trying to do and why to make a long story short when i do a clean install and go to windows updates fist thing there are 4 updates 1) defenders 2) video card about 50mb 3) sd card about 78kb 4) sony pi 78kb . but when you install they dont do nothing and the video card update really messes things up . so my thought was they are for when you upgrade form vista . but in all the years of having computers i have never upgraded allways cleaninstalls . so the help i need is do i start the upgrade from within vista or do i start like a clean install and choose option upgrade ? which is best? i have a disk which lets you choose which version you would like home/premeir/ buss/or ultimate . i really dont think sony would have put out these updates without trying them so thats what makes me think there for a up grade not clean install . becase 2 of the dont help and the third messes the video all up
I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the 1366x768 screen on the VGN-Z610Y/B to the 1600X900 from the VGZ-Z690 or something or if there is some type of bios limitation that I should be aware of
have a friend who thinks he can update my laptop on my behalf to reflect more memory (2GB) and a larger Harddrive (500 GB), can anyone please advise whether this is possible for this laptop.
I'm looking at purchasing an FW with only 2g of RAM and upgrading it myself cheaper than I can do buying it from Sony. The RAM from Sony is DDR2-800 PC2-6400. where to buy a couple 4g modules (2x4, 8g total)?
I want my laptop to last me another year or two if possible. I was cleaning it the other day when I broke off a key, ugg....anyway I found a replacement keyboard for $35, which I will be fixing.
Ok, being I have seen I can also change the hard drive. I am confused though, do I need an Ultra ATA-6, a SATA, IDE, EIDE, I just can't seem to figure out which one I need. I want to get at least 160 Gig HD for it. I see one for $35 here [url] would this work?
Also am I right in that I can also change the CPU if I get a Centrino 2.1Ghz, 400mhz as long as I use the Artic Gel stuff? If I do these 3 things I think the laptop would be great for another year. I am out of the country without much money hehe, so for me buying a new one is not an option, besides I cannot get a real normal QWERTY keyboard here....so that would frustrate the crap out of me. I am too old to learn a new keyboard!
I already am upgrading the memory from 512 to 1024, I got the chips on ebay for $11. Wish it would support more, but that is the max for this laptop.
i was thinking about upgrading the ram in my vaio from 2gb to 4gb. from what ive gathered the Intel 945PM chipset is capable of supporting a max. of 4gb RAM, although i have also read on these forums that it's only 3gb. If it is indeed 3gb max. i presume that i will have to install 1x 1gb and 1x2gb to achieve 3gb and would therefore lose out dual channel. would i see a performance boost if this were the case? i want to install windows 7 x64 in the near future.
I got a Vaio Z620D, it's a Canadian Model. It's got only 2GB of ram, so I am looking to add 2 more. I was told that it should match the frequency or something like that, I am not too sure about the whole deal.

Here is the detailed specs for this laptop, just scroll down for the RAM info.
So I got my hands on two Vaio Z's, one (VGN-Z27GNX) with Blu-Ray and 2.53Ghz, the other (VGN-Z36GDB) with DVD+RW and 2.66Ghz.
I am keeping one of them and selling the other, however, ideally I would like the faster CPU and Blu-Ray drive on the one machine. Not only that but I would also prefer the Z36 as it is the third generation model (in Australia) as opposed to the Z27 being second gen.
My question is, whether it is even worth the trouble to gain the 130Mhz and whether there was any significant changes from 2nd to 3rd generation in design, architecture, efficiency, etc?
At the end of the day I do want the Blu-Ray drive. Also, I plan to upgrade to a single SSD in the near future and have read on this forum that there are some issues with having an SSD with Blu-Ray but I am not sure why. Can someone please clear this up because if this is correct then I will also need to consider SSD vs Blu-Ray?
My Sony has a T7200 CPU wanted to know if it could be up graded to a T7800 or Faster CPU ? I have not opend it yet to see if the CPU is socketed for changout.
Just picked up a used but like new VGN-SZ650N last nite and would like to upgrade the HDD to 7200rpm. May I know is there instructions online to shed me some light how to do that.
I just ordered a customized Sony Vaio E series laptop from SonyStyle! How much of a performance boost should I expect to see when my new laptop arrives? (For games and general use).
From my current laptop (HP G60-115EA):
Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 @2GHz 3GB DDR2 RAM Intel GMA 4500mhd 160GB 5400rpm hard disk
To this laptop I have just ordered (Sony Vaio E series):
Intel Core i5-520m @2.4GHz 4GB DDR3 RAM Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5650 500GB 5400rpm hard disk
ive been reading your forums for over a year and i finally create an account. So ive been looking to upgrade my cpu on this vaio VGN-FE670G which has a T2300. I was wondering if i could swap it for one of these: x7800, t7700, t7500 or a t7300.
Just bought the Z610Y from BB and would like to upgrade to Samsung 64gb SSD SLC. I am thinking of upgrading to only one SSD not 2 SSDs with RAID. Has someone succesfully upgrade this particular model's HDD to SSD? Z610Y has 125mb of Nvidia graphic and Z690 CTO has the 256mb graphic memory. Are these two model have the same type of motherboard?
I know that some members in this forum have the Z690 and they could upgrade to SSD. I think my Z has the same motherboard as the Z540, I am not sure whether my Z can be upgraded to SSD.
