Acer :: Aspire 1410 Owners
May 2, 2010
I recently purchased an Acer 1410 and have a few questions to other owners
1. The machine comes with 2GB. To those who upgraded to 4GB with Windows 7 and the Celeron 743 processor, did you notice
any performance improvements?
2. If I were to upgrade the RAM, I'm still not sure the specs of the modules I need. The 1GB modules in my machine are from Elpida with numerical writing
1rx8 pc2 6400s 666. If anyone knows the pin-out and other specs of these modules, please share them. Even better if you can recommend specific
modules for upgrading to 4GB.
3. I wiped my machine clean and installed a licensed copy of Windows 7 Professional. Since doing so, Windows doesn't automatically resume when
I open the lid. I have to press the power button. I can't seem to find any setting in Windows-7 to correct this.
4. There are 4 led lights on the edge of the laptop that shine directly into my face. Some of them blink from time to time and get annoying.
Any way of turning off these status lights without hacking the motherboard?
5. One of the applications on the Acer site under Support is called Acer Launch Manager. I installed this along with the drivers Acer provides on their
support page. What the heck is Launch Manager. The window that pops up when clicking on the program
says if press the P key, it will launch different multimedia applications.

I have an old Sony Vaio VGN-FS742/W and just got an Acer Aspire 1410. The 1410 has a 2GB PC2-5300 (333 MHz) stick of RAM. The Vaio has a 1GB stick of PC2-4300 (266MHz) RAM.
I've read that running two RAM sticks of different speeds makes them both run at the speed of the slowest stick. Could any advise whether my 1410's performance would be better by adding the 1GB from the Vaio to have 3GB RAM running at 266MHz, or just keep the 2GB already in the Acer running at the quicker 333MHz?

I purchased the Acer Aspire 1410-2920 less than two weeks ago, and I seem to be having some issues with mine. I'd love to know if anyone here has experienced these issues as well. I've been using it and have been enjoying it, but now I'm having second thoughts with it and am considering exchanging it for something else. I'd rather not go the exchanging route, but it's something I'm seriously thinking about.
-- ISSUE #1 / LOOSE HINGES --
As posted in another thread created by me about weak hinges on my1410, I'm currently on my second one since the first one had loose hinges. The hinges on my newer one are better but definitely not as firm/strong as I'd like them. Is this normal? Is there any way I can try tightening them myself?
-- ISSUE #2 / HEAT ISSUES --
It gets freakin' hot after only using it for 20-30 minutes. Is that normal? I have the 1810tray application installed, and even if I have the fan set on the highest setting it gets to about 55-57 degrees Celsius. Why does it get so damn hot? All I have running at most times is Firefox and possibly iTunes, but usually not more than two applications. I do notice, though, that it gets incredibly warm when I'm watching video podcasts or movies (MP4s). Anyone else experiencing heat issues on theirs? I've never used a laptop in my life (which I've been using for 15+ years) that gets as warm/hot as this 1410. Is there something I can do to turn down the heat?
-- ISSUE #3 / DOESN'T SIT FLAT --
When it's sitting on a flat surface, all four rubber points on the bottom don't sit flush. The front fright rubber foot doesn't touch the surface, so when you're typing on it there's a very slight rocking motion. When I type it makes the screen rock/wiggle. It's hard to describe it, but it's quite bothersome. Does this happen with anyone else? I can provide a video clip of it if needed, just have to take video of it.

I read a great review on the 1410 and decided to buy it. Been very happy with it, but discovered that it was the Celeron 743 and not the Core 2 Solo. I didn't realize that until I bought it from Newegg; just thought there was only one CPU offered.
So, my question is, can I upgrade the CPU? If so, what CPUs can I use and has anyone taken an 1410/1810 apart and posted pics or a guide?

I recently purchased an aspire 1410 and have found the wireless card to be extremely unstable. Unless I am standing within 3 ft. of the modem/router, I lose the signal.
Not what you imagine when you purchase a netbook to use around the house. And I have had another notebook that picked up the signal flawlessly, so this is either the wireless card in this machine or a driver issue.

I am trying get Windows 7 installed on my 1410 but since there is no optical drive it is a real pain. Got windows 7 installed by doing a clean install using a usb drive. Now the problem is I cannot install the Acer software and drivers that acer included on their upgrade disc. I tried running the program from my external hard drive but that does not work since it says to insert the disk. ...why can't they make it easier? All the applications and drivers are on the disk but I have no idea which to install since the disc contains files for all their models. Why would acer not make thier upgrade disc a download or something for their computers without an optical drive?

I'm very intrigued by this CULV "netbook", and would like something to hold me over for awhile since I just sold my notebook. How is the screen quality? I see the spec's list it as LED backlit.

I recently picked up a nice 1410, the 12" version. Looking around on Acer's site it appears they used this name in the past for a 14" laptop as well? Is the new 1410 the laptop people are discussing in the other threads with the Timeline?
The primary reason I ask is because I'd like to buy another AC adapter off Ebay, and it seems many that come up for the 1410 may be for the old laptop. Is there some other model or part number I should be searching for?

This is the follow-up thread to Phil's great Timeline Tweaks thread.
I've decided to leave out 13"+ timelines for now and focus on the 11.6" models.
3810T, 4810T, 5810T and Travelmate users are welcome to create dedicated tweaks threads.
Some tweaks in this thread work for other timelines too, though.

I know that the Fn + Brightness key issue on XP has been mentioned in other 1410/1810T threads, but I thought it might be nice to start a thread specific to the problem. After it's fixed we can add it with the other stickies.
I recently installed XP on a coworkers 1810T and because i'm interested in the machine myself i wanted to investigate the brightness issue and see if Acer is working on a fix, or even recognizes the problem.
My correspondence with Acer has been extremely frustrating and disappointing. I was considering using the 1810T laptops to replace our office's aging Lenovos but Acer's lack of support has made me majorly turned me off to that idea.
Here's my discussion with Acer, reverse chronological order (start at the bottom):............................................

I ordered and received my Acer 1410 (Celeron SU2300, WD Scorpio Blue 250GB, Windows 7 64, 2GB RAM) a little over a week ago and while I like almost every aspect of it, I'm wondering if the high pitched noise / whine I'm hearing from it is normal?
Basically I only hear it when there isn't much noise around, but it's still mildly distracting. It mainly comes from the area near the indicator lights, but is most apparent under the laptop where the RAM / HD slot is. For some reason the sound is much louder with the AC adapter plugged in. On battery, the noise is basically gone (but will come back for short periods of time). I can also hear the whine through the headphone jack if nothing is playing (at least on AC power).
What might be the cause of this noise and is there any way I can get rid of it? The RMClock trick doesn't work since the option to "Run HLT command when OS is idle" is grayed out and cannot be selected.
If I decide to return this and get another 1410 later (since the online store I bought it at is sold out right now), would I be likely to get another one with this whine/noise?

Overview:
If you have never heard about Windows tax, Windows refund or anyone ever getting refund for Windows OS then perhaps it is time to look it up.
I don't think many people are aware of the fact that it is possible (and you have the all the rights to) to get a refund for Windows OS if you aren't planning to use it.
Getting Windows OS refund is like returning unused/unneeded product to get your money back. For example, if you are using Linux on your computer, why should you pay for Windows OS? Or, if your study institution provides FREE premium Windows OS, why should you pay for the crippled one that comes with your computer? Why should you even be forced to use Windows?
I decided not to pay for Windows OS. It is in the principle.
Please note: The key in getting Windows OS refund is in DECLINING the EULA agreement the first time computer boots up (or not turning computer on at all). If you accepted the EULA you are out of luck!
Here is how I got Windows OS refund from Acer Canada:
I purchased my Acer Aspire 1410 from Canadian Staples Business Depot. For 5 days I played around with it by booting Ubuntu Linux from SDHC card to make sure it was working correctly, there were no defects, etc, and after making the final decision of keeping the notebook, I picked up the phone and called Acer Technical Support (1-866-706-2237).
After getting a hold for an agent I explained that I would like to get a refund for Windows Vista Home Premium that came pre-installed on my laptop and quoted EULA agreement:
Quote:
By using the software, you accept these terms [of EULA agreement]. If you do not accept them, do not use the software. Instead, contact the manufacturer or installer to determine their return policy for a refund or credit...................

my spacebar snapped off after moderate use on a one month old Acer. Tech support is willing to receive and fix it, but I need to be using this laptop and cannot be laptop-less for 16 days.
So I wanted to buy my own keyboard and was looking at this:
[url]
Now the page up and down keys are in 2 lines instead of 1 and these keys look bigger, but is the dimension of the keyboard identical to 1410 before I buy it?
The other one I saw on these forums is here:

From the timeline Thread from pookguy
The 2nd keyboard looks identical but the auction doesn't mention 1410.

I actually noticed a faint, faint line in the outer glossy covering on the top of the laptop, about half-way in the middle horizontally. It looks like a plastic blemish but looks too perfect, as it's perfectly straight and right in the center.
Again, doesn't bug me, but I'm curious if anyone else noticed this. You gotta see it in the right light!

I just made a purchase of a 1410 for about $340 with an Intel Core 2 Solo SU3500 and 2GB ram. I plan to do a clean of install Windows 7 32-bit once I receive the laptop.
However one thing concerns me, how does the laptop fare with online Flash video streaming? I'm thinking it will do fine with 360p and 480p streaming, but is it able to run 720p or even 1080p smoothly?
Also, is this model able to multi-task somewhat? I'm not looking for anything extreme, but I'm wondering more about running multiple tabs in a browser or running Office apps with internet surfing, etc.
If not playable out of the box, are there tweaks to get HD flash playback smooth? I've heard of the new Adobe Flash 10.1 helping out with performance somewhat, but I'm wondering if it's a long wait before a cheap (sub-$400) netbook/sub-notebook can stream HD flash well that isn't an ION with Atom.
I've heard great reviews on the 1410 and like the purchase, but was just curious about some of the performance situations stated above.

In August I purchased an Acer 751h, 2GB RAM and 250GB HD. It came with Vista, which was pretty awful, but since I installed Win7 on it, I don't want to put it down because it performs so well. It's BLAZING fast, a great little machine and I absolutely love it.
My mother needs a new computer and she really likes mine. I'm considering giving it to her and getting myself the new 1410 - what do you think? Does the new processor in the 1410 make that big a performance difference?
In the benchmarks I've read, even the single core version (apparently there is also a dual-core 1410) is twice to three times as fast as the Atom in my 751 - that's pretty impressive.
I can only imagine that the 1410 with a clean install of Win7 would absolutely FLY. It would also be nice to have the different touchpad buttons and wireless N.
What do you guys think of the 1410?
Also, is it worth it to get the dual core model over the single core?
Also to confirm, the 1410 has VGA-out AND HDMI? This would save me from buying an adapter for when I need to give presentations, as most projectors are VGA-only.

I just had a blue screen of death (dump screen) for the third time in 2 months and after reboot, i get this screen:
What can i do now? I would like to recover the files i have in the HDD, as i know if i send this to Acer, they'll wipe out everything or replace a new HDD. Can i open the laptop and try to plug the HDD to some enclosure to get the files out?
Will that void the warranty?
In the BIOS, i see:
HDD Model Name: None
HDD Serial Number:
ATAPI Model Name: None

My 1410 has a problem with the display out function. It works fine with both the HDMI and VGA output when the lid is open. However, when I close the lid, the display is okay for a couple of seconds then it flashes on and off intermittently on the display that I hooked it up to. It happens with both the VGA and HDMI output signal. It only happens when the lid is closed, even though I set the computer the do nothing when the lid is closed. I thought it might be a software/driver issue, but I installed the most recent chipset and VGA drivers from the acer website with no change. This is an important feature for me to have because I use the computer with an external display the majority of the time. I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit. Their tech support has told me that Acer computers are set to not work with an external display when the lid is closed.

I have a Gateway EC1803h which as far as I can tell is identical to the Acer 1410 except for the design of the case, so I'd like to ask this to the Acer users since there are many more with the 1410 than the Gateway.
I'm running Windows Vista. I've disabled the ACPI Lid driver by changing the driver to "Volume Manager" as suggested by various internet sources for fixing the problem where closing the lid, even with the close lid action set to "do nothing" can cause the lcd to not turn on again when opening the lid.
So the problem is with hibernation. If I hibernate the machine, then resume again within let's say a minute or so, it comes back up fine. If I hibernate, then wait a longer amount of time, say 10 minutes, I can see the BIOS boot, the "Resuming Windows" splash screen, but then when I'd expect to see the login screen, instead the laptop screen turns off, and I see nothing. Oddly enough, at this point, if I plug in an external monitor, I can see the login screen there, so the OS is running properly. I can even log in. But at this point, I cannot Fn+F5 to enable the laptop screen. It's like the laptop screen has been disconnected/disabled/removed, whatever you want to call it.
Another weird symptom is that at this point, I can usually see a "System" process that ends up taking up 100% of the CPU processing, all of the time (not just spikes), so the task manager basically stays at 100%.
This feels like a software/driver issue to me, but I've been unable to find any other Acer 1410 or Gateway EC1803h users who've experienced this. I've tried the video drivers on the Gateway site, Acer site, as well as drivers from the Intel site. Same behaviour. I'm contemplating exchanging it for another unit, but only if there's a chance this is indeed a hardware malfunction.

Looking to pick up a laptop/netbook very soon and I am pretty much sold on going with the 3810TZ but now I am seeing a lot of talk about the 1410, which unless I am mistaken, is lighter than the 3810TZ, smaller, faster (not by much but has a 3500 cpu vs the 2700) and cheaper (450, vs best deal I can find on 3810 which is 550). Same features/memory/etc?
Any actual knowledge of when the 1410 will be released? I need it very soon (for a trip in a few weeks) and i cant tell from reading these forums if it will be out then or not until october.....

I Cant get 5.1 DTS spdif audio on my Windows 7 64 bit 1410 Acer laptop using ac3 with toslink into receiver. I'm hoping my laptop supports surround sound output but I fear it may not. I downloaded the full AC3 version since I'm using 64 bit OS. Under config speakers with windows media center I setup 5.1 speakers and clicked test and I did get a specific sound to all my speakers through my receiver. Also when I click speaker icon on bottom right of screen to get realtek digital output properties/ supported formats - I click test sound for DTS and I also get a separate ping to my 5 speakers. Under realtek advanced tab however I notice default format is limited to two channel.
Under ac3 filter config main tab I set speakers to 5.1 and checked use spdif. Under spdif tab I checked use spdif output format to 5.1. spdif passthrough I checked DTS and AC3. Under spdif/DTS mode I tried all 3 settings- auto/padded/wrapped. I'm only getting 2 channel digital audio. I think AC3 is not working right because while playing a DTS movie I don't see a AC3 icon on system tray and when I turn on ac3 config while still watching movie, SPDIF status says No data and I don't see any green spike bars for audio levals. Do I need to force AC3 to work somehow? Do I need a different mediaplayer to use as a front end? Or do I need additional software/ codecs like hailsplitter or something?
My AC3 must be working a little bit because before I downloaded AC3 mkv's would refuse to play at all. I have divx 7 by the way for video support of mkv's. I noticed even after I downloaded divx 7 for mkv support mkv's still wouldn't play without AC3. I'm using windows media player and windows media center for movies.
