Acer :: Aspire 5102- BSOD Error
Nov 15, 2007I've been getting the BSOD error on my PC. The main ewrror is 0x000000f4 but I sometimes get the 77 error as well. Most times i need to reboot and then I get the 200 fixed hard disk 0 failed error . If I click F! i get yet another error, PXE.61 error and this takes my rebooting quite a few times in order to get windows xp (media center edition) to come uo it stays on for a while (the length of time is getting shorter and shoryer these days) and then I have to go through the entire scenario over again. I'm trying to remove the files and programs that I actually care about off this comp. I contacted Acer tech support and was told that it most likely a HArd drive problem and that it would need to be replaced They had the wrong warranty ending date for me and after providing proof of purchase, they changed it to 11/23/07. Now that I have about 8 days left on my warranty. the tech support person told me to purchase the extended warranty because if I ship it to them and the warranty expires, I will have to pay for the service. Now my question is this. I'm not too sure that it would be worth shipping it to them for repairs I will have to pay $99 for the warranty plus tax and At least $100 to ship it back to them. On top of that I have read horror stories about people who sent their comps in to be repaired and it being returned to them with scratches on the LCD, initial problems not repaird or additional problems after the comp was returned to them. I'd much rather carry it in to a shop but was told their are no local repair shops in my city except for geek squad and they will charge me since I didn't purchase my comp from them. WHat would you do take it to a local repair shop or pay the bugcks to extend the warranty and then pay to have it shipped to be repaired? Another reason why I am leery is because I bought a HP laptop last year. the Ac adapter jack ont he comp was loose so I shipped it to HP to have it repaired. they had my comp for almost a month and then told me the motherboard, keyboard, speakers, and LCD display was unsalvageable and that it would cost me over $1000 to have it replaced(i only paid $369 for it on black Friday). They also told me that I had a liquid spill which was a total lie as I keep my laptop in my bedroom and I never eat or drink in my bedroom.( come to find out that loose jacks are a known problem with some Hp laptops I have read horror storeies about Acer using the dreaded liquid spill excuse too and I don't want to go through the drama again. Are the BSOD errors definitely the fault of a faulty hard drive?

Apr 17, 2009When I start it everything is fine. You see the Acer logo. Ubuntu starts with a BIOS BUG #81[49435000]. Then when the Ubuntu load screen just freezes. When I reboot it the screen is dead. But after a cold start it's fine.
I don't think it's because of the bug, I've read it's because I have a 32-bit linux on a 64-bit. When I try to install XP it works for a while but then the screen just dies.

Oct 9, 2014I own a 3.5 years old Acer Aspire 5742G (Core i3 M380; NVIDIA540M). the heat sink or the collinig fan might have some issue as it usually gets overheated when playing games (even CS condition zero/1.6). I don't play games anymore, so its not a problem.
The problem is that I am unable to adjust the screen brightness from the keyboars shortcut (Fn+ Left/Right arrow key), neither from the control panel (Power Settings).
Although I do noticed something that, if I change my brightness settings (nothing happens) and I close the laptop lid (display screen) by folding it down and openeing it back after 3-4 seconds, the brightness is now changed.

Dec 1, 2014Screen automatically dims as I go in little dark areas and gets too bright when it has so much light around it. I am trying Fn+ arrow keys but they make very less difference. Is there any way to control this?
I am using Windows 8.1 and display drivers are Intel HD Graphics Family version 10.18.10.3316.

Oct 7, 2014Basically the Fn Button, Left, Right, Up, Down buttons are all working fine. I can adjust the volume of the notebook, but I can't however adjust the brightness of the screen. There is no brightness setting in my notebook whatsoever! Am I missing the brightness driver? what is the name of the brightness driver? Or is it something else. Taking into account that I have decrease/increase brightness symbols on the left/right buttons respectively.

Feb 27, 2015I am having an issue with my Acer Aspire V5-431P-4653 running Windows 8.1, namely, I cannot adjust the screen brightness at all. It seems to arbitrarily select a brightness level upon start up and from that point I cannot change it via the Fn and directional keys or through the control panel power settings. I have owned the laptop for a year and a half and this problem began roughly a week ago.
Of note, when I attempt to use the Fn and directional keys the brightness icon that pops up stays at the frozen brightness level - it does not move at all. In contrast, when I open the power settings and attempte to change the brightness from there, the brightness slider will move wherever I drag it, but the screen's brightness itself does not change. At startup the screen's brightness may be at full, minimum or somewhere in between - but regardless it will not adjust.
Acer :: 5102 XP Install
Nov 10, 2007I bought an Acer Aspire 5102 when it had Windows XP MCE on it. I bought Vista when it came out and installed it. Now I have some software for school that will only work on XP so I'm looking to reinstall XP. Now while I made the recovery DVDs, they're all scratched up and they won't read anymore. So I'm using an OEM copy of Windows XP MCE. But whenever I'm doing the installation, the computer just shuts off. I tried different installation CDs and it does the same thing. I then tried a Windows 2000 disc and it told me my BIOS was not ACPI complient and to update the BIOS. So I downloaded and installed the lastest BIOS from Acer's site (version 3.10) and it still dos the same thing. Vista (and linux) will install fine on it, but not XP/2000.

I am wondering if anyone else has tried this and if so, did you have any problems installing. from what I have researched, AMD is using the same bios for the the Turion processors and the RM-70 seems to be the one that uses the same wattage range, socket and power consumption.

Jun 10, 2008I have an Acer Aspire 5100 AMD 62x dualcore tk-53 i think its at like 1.7ghz, it came with Vista, I put XP back on it, came with 1gb of ram I upgraded to 4gb hoping it would run fine. To get to the point. When I first got the computer it ran great, however now sometime with it has brought it to this annoying spike in my CPU. I've tried everything I could to keep it down, but it spikes over 100% randomly and at the worst times. I've ran Process Explorer and watched when it spiked, nothing unusual. I've watched my task manager, nothing unusual. I've defraged, ran virus scans, disabled my virus protection, uninstalled it, reinstalled it, reformated, restarted, any and everything I could. I bought a stand for the laptop and a fan so it doesnt overheat. I've check my power settings, my page file remains the same around 555 on average even during the spikes.

My internet lags so bad on my aspire 5100, like when im trying to watch a streaming video it loads 3 seconds then stops, loads 3 seconds then stops. Dec 29, 2008I think that it is an overheating problem considering my laptop (ONLY recently) seems to be getting very hot, to the point it needs to shut down. But this is the strange thing:
I had Windows Vista installed on this laptop (Acer Aspire 5100) earlier, and my battery almost never heated up to the point it needed to shut down, or even heat up to an extreme level.... But now that I have downgraded to Windows XP SP2, it seems to shut down MUCH more often. But I did find one thing of concern. Around the same time my laptop started shutting down, I installed an application called 'Game Speed Changer' and that whenever I had used it, it slowed my computer down immensely, and then when I went to close it, the BSOD would appear. Every time.
Acer :: Aspire 5100 Graphics Card RAM
May 13, 2009I purchased an Acer Aspire 5100 using it mostly for busines and writing. Now, I'd like to watch some videos, have an webcam, and play games, however, the integrated video card handles none of this well. It's slow and will sputter on something as simple as a short 60 second video clip.
I maxed out the 4GB Ram, thinking that Vista was using too much but it did not help.

Acer :: ERecovery On Aspire 5100 Laptop
Jan 2, 2009Im trying to do a factory restore using the Acer eRecovery on Aspire 5100 laptop, which I set up using their wizard, input the password, ran from Vista, it has rebooted and is showing the Windows XP logo and the moving "progress" bar thing. However, after about 3 mins, the bar stops moving and nothing else happens, its been like that for ages now. Resetting the power starts it up and gets to the same point and stops again. I have used it before without problems, the hidden partition was there before I started (I checked). Now I cant do anything with the laptop at all! Can anyone suggest what I can do now? I didn't ever get round to making DVD backup disks. The machine is also 2 years old, and I dont want to spend a fortune on Acer's 50p per min customer service, considering they should've given me a boot disk with the machine in the first place. I only wanted to restore it as for no apparent reason all my USB devices stopped being recognized by vista.

Jan 30, 2009I have been having some trouble with speed on this computer and I'm quite sure its not a connection problem and its a temperature problem. Lately I have been hearing some strange noises coming out of it and I do feel a lot of heat on it's underside. Unfortunately it only has one vent on the side and the rest are at the bottom.
