Acer :: Aspire 5520g Heat

May 17, 2010

I have recently purchased a 2nd hand 5520g laptop.

Yesterday I was running games on it. The mouse/sound would freeze intermittently and it was very hot. So I bought a cooling pad, downloaded CPUID Hardware Monitor to check the temps and took it apart to check for dust in the fan/vents (there wasn't any). Today I tried running games again with the monitor going. There are no longer intermittent freezes but it consistently reaches 89C CPU and 90C GPU(at which point the laptop fan kicks in and cools it back down to 78ish then the fan slows down and the temp goes back up etc etc etc). The HD stays at 43C the whole time. The temperature seems fine when not gaming. As I type, the CPU is idling at 56, the GPU at 61, HD 40C, where they've been for the last hour.

So my questions:

1. Are 89/90C acceptable temps for the CPU/GPU when gaming on a laptop or will it do damage?
2. Is it possible that rethermal pasting the CPU/GPU and under volting the cpu (as suggested in other posts on this forum) would help?
3. Is there any way to make the fan speed turn to full at an earlier temperature? (once the fan went faster, the cpu/gpu temps decreased dramatically).

I took the Battery out in case that was helping the heat.

specs:
cpu - AMD Turion 1.9Ghz dual core
gpu - GeForce 8400m G
RAM - 3Gig
HD - 160GB

Acer :: Aspire 5920 Heat

Oct 25, 2009

So a year or two ago I bought an Acer Aspire 5920, it's always ran extremely hot (to the point that if I don't use an external fan it will skip movies and lag out everything). This will technically be the second laptop I've bought (the first had the same problem so I exchanged it for this one). I sent it in to Acer twice and it's come back the same way both times, with them saying there is nothing wrong with it. I now have to use a laptop stand with a desk fan behind it (and it STILL gets too hot). I have tried cleaning out the inside, reapplying the liquid silver (or whatever it's called) to the processors and heatsink bar, and even cleaned and oiled the fan. Is there anything that can be done about it?

Acer :: 5520G And Fan Speeding Up

Aug 3, 2008

I noticed that my Acer's graphics during games substantially slows down when notebook increases fan speed, and after few secs continues fluently.

The problem is very obvious in games likes HOMM 5.

The processor is 2.0 Turion with 8600M GS graphics.

I'm using Forceware 101.45 which came with the machine. Another thing I noticed, in
control panel I can't change system fan speed, it's greyed out.

Should I install newer drivers?

Acer :: Reducing Heat On ASpire 5100

Jan 30, 2009

I have been having some trouble with speed on this computer and I'm quite sure its not a connection problem and its a temperature problem. Lately I have been hearing some strange noises coming out of it and I do feel a lot of heat on it's underside. Unfortunately it only has one vent on the side and the rest are at the bottom. I will admit it is not the the best well kept laptop ever, for once it's never seen a compressed air can seen I took it out it's box. I did find this tutorial online for reducing the heat but I decided to post it here first to see what you guys thought about it boefore I went on with it.

I gotta say I never opened up a laptop before but that doesn't mean I'm computer illiterate or am shy about doing it. I do realize its a tutorial for a fujitsu and not an Acer. Well the bottom line is, what can I do to reduse the temperature? Can I attempt this [url]? and if so, are there any differences I shoould be aware about?

I`m saying this because I have 2 VGA outs ( DVI + DSUB ), and I wonder if they both will work if I upgrade. Plus I want to be sure they are compatible.

Acer :: 5520G Keeps Rebooting .. Is It Dead

Jul 17, 2009

My friend has mess up his Acer Aspire 5520G. And I'm supposed to help him fix it. His laptop has a nVidia 8400 graphics card.

When the laptop is powered it keeps rebooting itselve evry 3-4 seconds, and nothing is displayed on the screen. I don't know what's wrong with my friend's laptop but I think it might be related to the BIOS been correpted in his laptop. He tried to flash the BIOS from VISTA.

Anyways, I got Crisis recovery disk, and the latest BIOS for his laptop, and I got also a USB floppy drive. I removed the harddrive and the optical drive to force the laptop to boot from the USB floppy drive. I removed the battery too.

I pushed Fn+Esc, plugged the charger in the laptop and powered the laptop. The laptop know doesn't reboot itself but doesn't detect the floppy drive either.

I used the floppy to make a boot CD and tried to flash the bios again using the DVD drive this time. Pushed Fn+Esc again. The laptop turns ON and try to read the CD for about 5 seconds and then nothing else happens.

1- Is it a BAD BIOS.

2- How to make a boot CD to use with Crisis Recovery.

3D MARK 06 Score at resolution 1024x768 is 6390

Cinebench 10 score is 5472.

I've made a bench of COD5 and that was quite good. I've let all the default settings but use native resolution (1366x768) Vertical Sync and AA2x. I've used FRAPS to get the frame rate and the average was around 30-35fps, the lower rates was about 18fps during multiple explosions close to 4 tanks. We still can get more fps by lowering the resolution to 1280x720, but I wanted to test with the native resolution................

Acer :: Travelmate 2420 Heat

Sep 8, 2008

My daughter bought an Acer Travelmate 2420 (2428a) 2 years ago. Within a year we had to return it, due to heat problems. (It kept shutting down) The vendor told us that they had to clean the fan and the cooler... Now, a year later the problem is back... A strange thing is that the fan doesnt speed up at all.. it has never done it in fact,(It allways runs quiet) no matter how warm the notebook get... It just shuts down and we have to wait 10-15 mn before we can reboot the notebook... I installed SpeedFan, just to see if I could adjust the fan, but it just doesnt appear... I can read the temperature (71 on start, thats a lot for a Centrino...) the speed and the CPU charge... And thats it.The bios is up to date (Ver. 1.06)

Does the heat issue affect performance?

Will it bother me? (I will have this on my lap and I'm a guy)

Should I just wait for a coupon that I can use on the m1330 so I dont have to worry about it?

HP/Compaq :: DV7 Heat

Feb 26, 2009

I have a DV7-1001X which I got a month and a half ago as I won a completion for the laptop. It has a 2.8ghz Dual Core with the 9600 nvidia card.

I started experiencing the laptop automatically going to hibernate about 2 weeks ago randomly without me doing anything. Initially I thought it was hibernate breaking but I disabled that and the laptop just turned off so I figured it must be heat related.

I ran RealTemp and HWMonitor to find that when playing WoW my CPU and GPU temps were reaching 100C and when the CPU hit around 105 (according to realtemp) the hibernate/power-off would kick in. I have tweaked the undervolting now so it sits at 90C on full load but the GPU still spikes to over 100C and the cpu can spike too.

My first question is can the gpu/cpu take up to this as I see lots of mixed opinions about the max temp for cpu/gpu's?

Secondly this only started 2 weeks ago and I have tried spraying compressed air into the vents which cleared some dust but it does not appear to have made any difference. Is there much else I can do without removing screws?

Dell :: Heat On Studio XPS 16 With SSD

May 27, 2010

I was looking through some Studio XPS 16 reviews and one of the biggest complaints is heat. I don't really want to deal with heat that badly (I wish the fan was louder to compensate for the Heat).

But I am comparing a Studio XPS 16 to a Sony Vaio F series, and I was wondering how would the heat generated be with 8 GB of Ram, i7 720 QM processor, ATI 5730 and a 128 GB Solid State Drive? The Solid State Drive is supposed to generate 0 heat, so I figured that would mean that I would not have to deal with the heat problems. Also I would get the RGBLED screen.

On a less important note....with a 128 GB SSD and a 9 cell 85 whr battery what kind of battery life am I looking at with those stats at 20% brightness and only word documents?

I would like to grab a dell as I found out I may have a 15% discount there, but I don't want to have to deal with a hot/throttled computer.

Dell :: Studio XPS 13 & The Heat

Nov 16, 2009

I'm about to buy the XPS Studio 13 notebook and was hoping someone could make some clarifications for me about it. I've read a lot about the apparent design flaw in it that makes the monitor block the exhaust and thus the computer gets hot. I also know that the new BIOS version addresses this issue somewhat, but I'm a bit skeptical about it because a BIOS can only make the fans run more. The BIOS fix cannot correct the actual physical problem. Therefore, I'm a bit jittery about getting this computer, even though it's the one that best meets my spec requirements.

I would like to hear from those who have owned the XPS Studio 13 for at least 3-4 months and have used it for powerful stuff. What has your experience been like regarding the heat issue?

I've been warned that heat issues are not good for LED displays. This seems to me to be confirmed by the XPS 13 review posted at [url] where it is claimed that the heat issued damaged the bottom part of the guy's screen.

Dell :: Heat- XPS Gen 2IK9FANGUI

Sep 28, 2007

My mate's XPS Gen 2 w/ 7800GTX is experiencing issues in games - tearing and random black textures in GRAW 2, overheating => shutting down, and stuttering in Far Cry. We've tried different drivers to no avail, and after running Rthdribl for five minutes according to RivaTuner the GPU reaches 100c...so I'm thinking it's overheating.

So to the crux of the question...where on earth has IK9FanGUI gone? I was planning to use it to run the fans higher for some better cooling...but alas, I can't find it anywhere and the official site is down.

Dell :: Heat With XPS M1530

Dec 7, 2008

After hearing about the known heat issues with the nVidia 8400m card – I started monitoring the temperatures on my laptop using ‘SpeedFan’. The temperatures remain pretty consistent – albeit on the high side….

They are as follow:
GPU: 65C
Core 0: 55C
Core 1: 55C

These are averages – they really don’t get much higher (at least for too long). When the fan turns on they drop about 5C (and go back up when it turns off). I bought my laptop back in March (actually very happy with it) and have had no real problems (fingers crossed). I mostly use Office, surf the internet & watch movies – no real hardcore gaming for me…

Anyone think these temperatures are normal?

Should I call Dell?

Will all these video cards ultimately fail?

Dell :: M1710 And Heat

Apr 13, 2009

ive had the 1710 for two years,- but the heat issues are getting annoying.

right now with fangui just browsing

cpu load 10%
cpu temp 6969 °C
GPU 70 °C
fans rpm 4470

Have been using compressed air, cleaning the vents etc.

ive read about opening it up, but im guessing that voids the warranty. Have 2 year onsite left.

Did open a netbook to lube the fan, but im guessing its more difficult on the 1710. Also a problem if i get stuck at one point when putting it together.

Dell :: XPS M1530 Heat

Aug 21, 2009

I've had my XPS M1530 for a year now and I've recently gotten into overclocking, undervolting (going through this now), and monitoring my internal temperatures due to playing Oblivion, WoW, and AOC. Anyway, I checked the temperatures, and while idle my core temp sits at about 77C. With dual monitors (goes into 3D mode) it'll reach ~86C just surfing the internet. While gaming/overclocked it can easily reach 90-93C. I've gamed for LONG periods of time and it never seems to go above 93C ever, which is good b/c the max is somewhere around 100C (probably because of my cooling pad).

So I've looked online and everyone else seems to have temperatures of ~20C lower! What's going on and how come my laptop is this absurdly hot? Do any other users have temps this high? Have I had faulty hardware for a year now? I'm basically just wondering if there's any other suggestions out there or if I should call Dell asking them whats up with my laptop (I have a 4-year warranty).

Dell XPS M1530
Vista x64
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz
nVidia 8600M GT
4GB Ram

I just tried undervolting, and after changing the voltage it says "stress your CPU for 45minutes to make sure you don't get a blue screen of death or laptop crashes." It tested for a minute and RMClock (the program to undervolt) had to throttle the temps down b/c the CPU temps were getting over 95C.

Dell :: Monitor Heat

May 19, 2010

I wish I had found this place before I purchased my new Dell, I had an old dell xps laptop maxed out and never had an issue with it and after 4 years sold it on ebay for 800.00. bad decision.

What to do what's done is done, my question is, On my old dell xps i use to use a program to monitor the temp and was able to bring it down 3 degrees by changing the thermal compound.

Before I do anything with this beautiful looking studio xps. I would like to know if and what people are using to monitor the temperature. I have installed speedfan and it seems ok but as we all know with dell systems they like to make it difficult for us to monitor the temps.

I checked the logs on speedfan and did not see anyone else posting settings for the studio xps .....

That seems really high to me. I dont know if the fan is not kicking on or if the emulator is pushing my card to hard because i have never seen these kinds of temps before even after long Guild Wars sessions or any other of the number of games i play on this. Oh btw the card is not overclocked.
