Acer :: Installed Vista Ultimate On Aspire 7720G With GeForce 9300 But No Graphics
Jul 16, 2008
I have an Acer Aspire 7720G which has a Nvidia GeForce 9300M G 256MB graphics card.
Other specs - Core 2 Duo T5750 (2.0 Ghz), 3Gb Ram 667MHz
I've installed a clean version of Vista Ultimate but it doesn't recognise that there's a graphics card present. I've tried to instal the drivers from the Nvidia website but it aborts because it can't find the hardware.
I've also tried installing Vista SP1 but still no avail.

Over-clocking with RivaTuner. Right now I'm at 500Mhz for core, 1Ghz for shader and 425MHz for RAM.
On idle graphics card is at about 63C and processor at 33C with fan off.
To put some load on system, I used Intel BurnIn standard test and two instances of 64bit version of fluidsGL.exe from nVidia's Cuda SDK (acording to GPU-Z, the load on graphics card is about 93%). Mandelbrot.exe does put some more load on graphics card, but it closes as soon s application looses focus, so it isn't as convenient.
When I run tests, temperatures are around 85C for graphics card and 65C for processor.
I wanted to ask you how much should I overclock the graphics card and what are safe temperatures? I plan to use this laptop for few more years, so I do not wan to cook my graphics card.

I'm just looking for information / opinions on how to get the best deal for an upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.
I purchased my Dell Latitude E6500 direct from Dell USA Small Business on 2008-11-04, and shipped on 2008-11-21. It was pre-installed with Windows Vista Ultimate.
I've seen that systems purchased more recently (~June or July) qualify for a free upgrade from Vista to 7. I'm guessing there is nothing to qualify me for such a free upgrade, but considering that I haven't even had this system for a year yet, should there be any other upgrade discounts or specials available - either through Dell, directly from Microsoft, etc.?
Especially with the scores of users who claim that Windows 7 is really just another service pack to Vista, and with Apple offering their latest OS upgrade for a mere $29, I would certainly hope I'm not looking to pay the $219.99 as listed at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx - the same price as if I had never purchased Vista and upgraded a 7-year-old XP installation instead.

I was playing Minecraft two days ago using the GeForce GT 730M graphics card not the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics card when suddenly purple squares appeared on the game screen. The purple squares didn't appear any where else. The game crashed saying I had a bad driver. Then the laptop pop a blue screen saying VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. The laptop restarted as usual. I had this message before but further problems occurred. But this time is different.
After restarting I re-launched Minecraft but the game crashed saying I had a bad driver. I uninstalled the current driver using the programs and features and reinstalled the driver for my laptop found in Acer.com. The issue still continued. I went into Device Manager and found out that the graphics card had a code 43 issue. I found a solution online that said to install the newest driver on GeForce.com.
I did that and it seemed to remove the code 43 but when I went into NVIDIA GeForce Experience it said that my laptop didn't have a NVIDIA graphics card. Thinking it could of been a option that I changed that caused this, I did a refresh, and system restore to still see that my laptop wont recognize my NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M graphics card and that NVIDIA Driver Support Service was gone. It allows me to see when the NVIDIA GPU is in use. The system was cool when I started playing Minecraft when the problem happened.
System Specs:
Acer Aspire V3-571G-6622
NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M with 2 GB of dedicated VRAM
Intel HD 4000 graphics
15.6" HD LED LCD
4 GB DDR3 Memory
Acer NPlify 802.11a/g/n + BT4.0
Windows 8 64-bit

I have got an Acer 7720G laptop which comes preinstalled with vista.
I haved made a seperate partition and installed "Open Suse" (linux).
Each time I started my laptop it would give me an option from which I could choose which OS I wanted to use.
I wated to get rid of Open Suse and so I removed that partition.
But each time when I started my laptop that OS selector menu would still come.
So, I have then delted all my partitions and created new ones.
When I have installed the "Recovery - Factory Default" to bring back the laptop to its original state - it did install windows but now I cannot boot my laptop any more because it still tries to bring up the OS selector menu (but fails).
I think here might be a prob lem with the Acer "Recovery partition" which I didnt dare to touch.

I Formatted my laptop and installed windows XP (was a successful install) But my problem is....none of my hardware is installed. The WNet doesn't work, Vid Card isn't installed, nor is the Sound Card, and any other hardware that I'm forgetting that also needs to be installed (nothing is installed). I don't have the discs to install them. Can I get the installs for all these online somewhere and burn them to a disc and install on laptop?

Just for information, the SP2 for Vista is starting to come out in MS updates.
I have ran it for about a week and no issues todate other than the visual volume indicator (green bar) is no longer there when adjusting volume.
Its also about a 500MB download.

I have a Acer Aspire 5920G (Vista Home with SP1) laptop which I use for general purposes as well as occasional DVDs and a little games.
With the kind help from members of this forum I upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 4GB a couple of months ago but of course my 32bit Vista only uses 3GB which leaves 1GB unused. The laptop's processor is a T7300 at 2.00GHz.
Its NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT graphics card (with latest driver installed) seems to work quite well but a friend who I occasionally game with said I could go into the BIOS and allocate the unused 1GB of RAM to the card which will improve its performance.
I googled this to check but the articles I read (with my limited technical knowledge!!) seemed to say that allocating extra RAM in the BIOS does not work with dedicated cards and attempts to do so could in fact reduce performance.
I would be very grateful if an expert in this excellent forum who is knowledgeable about graphics cards could please clarify the situation for me.
Basically can I go into the BIOS to increase the card's RAM allocation to improve performance as my friend suggested or is this a waste of time and/or dangerous ?
Looking at the NVIDIA system info, I see that it says Total Available Graphics is 1535MB but dedicated video memory is 256MB. Does this support what my friend says or is it unrelated ?

since receiving my new Acer 7720-6604 (Cdn) a week ago, I am a firm believer. I cant believe it, the new Acer with 3G's of DDR2 RAM is even slower than my 5 year old Toshiba Satellite 2.8Gz Celery with 768MB of memory. It opens sites faster. It boots faster!
The only changes I have made to the new Acer so far was to uninstall the demo Nortons and have installed AVG free and SpywareBlaster. Also, I have disable Aero
I thought it might be AVG and SpywareBlaster slowing it down so tried it with both uninstalled and no change. Re-installed them
I ran across a MS suggestion using "Ready Boost" in which you utilize a 1G or larger thumbdrive to use as a cache. Possibly a very slight increase, so small I really cant say.
As the new Acer has a Geforce 8600M GT GPU and a T8100 Core 2 Duo processor, it cant be the hardware. The two drives are both WD 5400rpm so its really not them as I dont believe that 7200s would make that big a diff.
I am sorely tempted to utilize the second HDD for an XP install (just that it will be another $100 or so layout) Hoping that the SP1 will sort this garbage out.

I have recently bought the Acer Aspire 7720g laptop and kinda like the spec. Though I have had 2 major annoying issues with it. The first is that it would never boot at first attempt after an overnight shutdown. This was resolved by installing BIOS version 1.43 after finding a solution on this forum.
The second is one that I can not for the life of me find the reason. The network connections of the laptop will stop working after a few minutes and requires several restarts to make stable. This only seems to happen to the wireless connection. It does not drop signal it just seems to disable.
Yet I have unticked the 'allow Windows to turn of the wireless device to save power' thing. Updated all drivers and BIOS to the most current found version. Also when the wireless network 'turns off' I can not get into network and sharing centre or use the 'Connect To' option, they just both hang.
Even turning the wireless off and back on with the laptop switch makes no difference.

Recently I had a little upgrade adventure of my Aspire 7720G, replaced the nV 8400M GS with 9600M GT 512MB, added 4GB DDR2 @ 667MHz, and then I decided to upgrade the CPU also. I was thinking about T9500 for a long time, then I came across Intel's X9000 CPU (OEM, not the ES). I installed it, BIOS recognized it, Windows also (Win 7 Ultimate x64), but then I noticed something strange. It works only at 1.2GHz, in idle and in 100% load, when it should be at 2.8GHz. I tried my luck with power schemes, I have the latest BIOS, updated drivers and no change at all. CPU-Z reports it works at 1.2GHz all the time with a multiplier x6, it should be at x14. RMClock didn't help me at all, CPUgenie also. Old CPU was T7300, it was also working at 1.2GHz with multiplier x6 in idle but in 100% load the multiplier jumped to x10 and it worked at full speed; 2GHz. Windows Experience Index with T7300 was 5.1, for X9000 is 3.9!

I wanted to open my box to check the ease (or not) of a memory upgrade but had a helluva sweaty time trying to get the compartment cover off.
After undoing the 4 screws and getting it open a bit, it still seemed VERY firmly held in the vicinity of the fan vent area.
The plastic cover is pretty thin and I was terrified of breaking it, so tried a little prying, a bit of heaving, some levering, tugging, jabbing, swearing, praying etc. I even had the computer overturned and was looking for a way through the keyboard where I was convinced that a bolt must be holding the memory cover down.
Anyway it DID finally come loose but it was a bit scary, so I've made a couple of scans and added some notes on the lugs which were holding it in place in the hope that it might prove useful to others in the same predicament.
One scan is of the actual lid and the other is of what's inside, in case you get to feel like pushing a screwdriver in there - (don't).

In the specs listed on the website, and on the sticker on the laptop itself:
320 GB Dual HDD
(160 GBx2)
I am going insane, on the device manager it says I have two HDs, but I think one of them has been partitioned, the one with the windows data on (C drive) the HDs in my computer are displayed as this:
I've been told of a program call 'Raid' or something, but I'm really not sure what it actually does.
I just want to know if the two smaller HDs are partitioned and if possible, how to join them up again,

my Acer's been having trouble playing audio and keeping time. The clock problem's simple: ever since I got it it's lost time at a variable rate, averaging at probably around a minute every hour. Nothing I've done has managed to fix this, except in the short-term by updating it to Internet time.
More complicated have been the audio issues. These vary in severity and come and go to an extent, and I have had some success fixing them. Basically, since I got the computer, audio's been at least slightly choppy while playing videos over a period of time. Generally just playing audio files themselves work fine (unless something resource heavy going on in the background), and bizarrely playing videos through my browser (say on YouTube) has always been perfect, regardless of site, length or quality of video. But when it comes to playing anything from the hard drive regardless of whether it's WMP or VLC and regardless of bit rate, sooner or later the audio screws up. This can be either to the extent that it'll glitch every couple of seconds, that I'll lose sync with the video slightly, or loss of sound entirely. In fact, the first time I downloaded a video podcast on iTunes I was left wondering why the opening scene was so eerily silent for so long!
Now initially I was able to fix this by updating the BIOS to v1.45 and after that pretty much everything was good. It would still glitch occasionally on HD movies, and certainly still didn't like too much going on in the background, but generally nothing I couldn't handle. At least until now, when all the same problems have come back to haunt me worse than ever. I tried going on to v1.43, but no dice. And now I'm back on v1.45 in the vain hope that re-installing it might make some difference. But alas. I've looked at performance in task manager and it's ticking along at about 16% CPU usage, so nothing untoward there either. It seems like a BIOS problem because updating the BIOS fixed it, but now it's screwing up again under that same BIOS and with nothing untoward going on in the background or hitting the CPU too hard I'm totally stumped.
Basically, is there anything else I might try software wise, or is it time to give Acer a call while I'm still in warranty?

It runs like XP with 256MB of memory and this system has 3GB's. The HDD's on this are large WD 160's at 5400rpm, so it cant be them.
I have disable Aero and gotten rid of (uninstalled) the 90day trial Norton.
I am running AVG Free for an AV. Ultimate is a 64bit system
Just opening a new site in IE takes on the average of 15secs or so and initial start up, seems to take forever.
I have went into power management and amended the screen to never turn off and also the HDD's to never turn off.
Before I did this, it went into some sort of sleep/hibernation mode and couldnt figure out how to wake it. I tried using the "sleep mode" at Start>Sleep and it went into sleep fine but when pushing the Power button to re-awaken, I waited about 5 mins and it still didnt awake.

I bought an ACER Aspire 7720G Intel Core 2 Duo with Vista SP1 3 weeks ago and have now some problems with my WLan and with booting after sleep. WLan only works when I restart the computer after swiching on the WLan connection either by pressing the WLan button or by activating the connection in "networks and sharing center" (at least it works then, but it's annoying to restart the computer all the time). Since I use WLan at home I get a message while booting the system (Broadcom UNDI PXE.... Client... MAC ADDR:... GUID... DHCP ...not found..blabla). I use a Lan connection at work and here I have no problems yet. My second problem is that my computer really stays asleep after I woke it up from sleep or just if I would not use it some minutes. It does not show any system related information anymore and I can only restart it again. I have looked up my BIOS and it is Version 1.44 (read the thread about the BIOS problems),

As I had been having a couple of minor problems with a temporary dim screen on startup and occasional screen flicker, I decided to upgrade the NVIDIA display driver on my 5920G.
Unfortunately I rather carelessly installed driver update 180.48 for a 8800 GS rather than the correct 178.24 for the 8600GT on my laptop.
It installed fully and the display still seems to be working OK (but screen flicker still there)
I am wondering whether or not it is OK to leave the 180.48 driver as it is or whether I should roll the driver upgrade back and then install 178.24.
To be honest I find installing drivers quite complicated and difficult so I would prefer to take no action unless the expert advice from members of this forum says it will cause me future problems.

i bought an acer aspire 8930G, with pre-installed vista (should be OEM) hp and a lot of useless additional software. the note is top, the thing i hate is the pre-installed os. now i want to run a clean vista installation.
reading in several forums about that, but not found the right way to do. so i have some questions.
1. is it possible to create vista installation disk (any kind of it) from data on hidden partition (or other data from the note)?
2. how the data for this disk has to look like?
i won't buy some extra disk, because i have already payed for it as buying licence!
for question nr 3 please check this...
Vista Clean Install on Acer 5520G
3. is it true what cappuchok wrote about bogus licence keys that not working with clean install?

Not a bad notebook, with 4 gbs of memory. Fair warning to all owners. 4 gb's of memory is sweet only problem is that the newest bios version(1.20) will not support lil know boot into bio's. If you are planning to upgrade your memory make sure you have bios version 1.19 installed. Or your system will not boot. Not only does version 1.20 not support the 4 gb's , it also drops the max memory setting for your video to 128. ( versus 256 mb in ver 1.19). After installing yor memory make sure to d/l SP1 for vista. It may not use all the available memory but it will at least show 4 gb's in windows..

While I was playing around with a clean install of Vista on a 9301 Microsoft updates installed (recommended/optional update) a new driver which turned out to be 7.15.11.6369
Anyone know anything about this version. It seemed to work really well, and had many features the earlier one doesn't. Is it a notebook driver ? I also couldn't find it anywhere to download.
