Apple :: Macbook Pro 13" 6,1 Can't Install Windows Or Linux

May 1, 2010

I have the 13" Macbook Pro 7,1 and everytime I try to install Linux/Windows they come up with errors which basically say that they can't find my HDD or the Optical Drive during installation.

I don't like the idea of being stuck with OS-X.

Turns out it's a MBP 7,1...not 6,1.

Nov 13, 2014

I was trying to install windows 7 when i got the "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GTP disks etc"  Error.

I know i needed to disable something in bios but this laptop's bios isn't very detailed , i tried disabling the Legacy boot and now the laptop doesn't boot up anymore, not even in bios. When i power it on all i get is a black screen and the Caps lock blinks twice.

I tried pressing the windows key+B+ power button for one second while the laptop is shut down but it didn't do anything.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T430s / Clean Windows 8 Install To SSD Or MSATA Using Restore Partition On HDD

Nov 20, 2012

best way to install a *clean* version of Windows 8 to their Thinkpad that came with Windows 8?

I ordered a T430s with low specs and Windows 8 and I dropped in an 8GB DIMM and mSATA drive.  However, the Lenovo implementation of Windows 8 is maddeningly difficult to create backup media (you can't) and the Lenovo "restore" from the HDD partition won't allow you to restore to another drive.  Plus, that kinda defeats my original purpose of a clean install without any bloatware onto a fast, user-installed mSATA or SSD.

I have Windows upgrade media I purchased for my desktop, but that install program says the installation won't work with the Lenovo Product Key specific to my Thinkpad T430s (I'm guessing it's an OEM product key while the install media is an upgrade looking for a previously installed Windows 7?)

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T430U Windows 7 Pro Install Errors - System Reserve Partition

Oct 26, 2013

NIB T430U (Type 8614), 128 SSD, shipped with Win 7 Pro but had a Win 8 Pro license.

Booted into Windows Installer via USB thumb drive running YUMI Multiboot tool (Win 7 Pro is the only OS on it currently).  Installer loads perfectly, go into Custom (Advanced), blew away all existing partitions and create a new one using all available space (122104MB).  New partition is created, go to format, expecting it to automatically create the System Reserved partition but it doesn't.  Click Next, get an errors stating, "Setup cannot create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.  Check setup logs for more details."

Did some research and decided to go into DISKPART and do all of the partitioning ahead of time.  Ran the following sequence:

diskpart
list disk
select disk #
clean all
create partition primary align=1024
format fs=ntfs
active
exit
exit

Closed the Windows Installer to reboot the PC and went through the same installation motions, omitting making any changes when in the Custom (Advanced) section, same error.

Apple :: Macbook - Can't Install To An External Hardrive

Jun 6, 2009

I'm pretty sure I crashed my hard drive. I came back in and my two year old white dual core macbook had froze up. I screwed around with it and finally got it to boot from the external backp drive.(Don't ask me how I did it) I know it had the system on it. I put it on when I did the intial backup a year ago. I tried to reinstall the software but the internal doesn't show up. ANd you can't install to an external hardrive. SO can I just install a new harderive and does anybody have any suggestions as to what brand, size and best deal.

Also there is a ton of upgrades that want to download as the OS I have is over a year old on the external.

I'll be checking in cause I know I probably don't have enough info on here. ANd i aint gonna shut down

Do I have to install drivers?

Do SSD's and Mac's play nice together?

For someone with average computer abilties is replacing the hard drive doable?

Apple :: Windows Error After Removing Boot Camp Partition

Mar 16, 2009

I partitioned my hard drive for boot camp when I got it, and used Windows for a bit. I then decided to remove the Windows partition and use OSX only.

I used disk utility and re-claimed the partition size used for Windows. Cool.

Now whenever my computer's battery dies when it's in sleep mode, plugging it in does not recall Mac OSX (you know the gray screen that eventually resumes to Leopard?). On top of that, when I restart my MBP, it goes into a windows "non-system disk, remove and press enter" thing. I have to restart and hold down option to select Mac OSX, as if there was still a partition. But no windows option shows up.

I'm confused and this is getting annoying. I've checked disk utility again, it's showing one partition. There must be something that got left behind. Any ideas? I have thought about wiping and Time Machining it, but I'm afraid whatever is left behind will get backed up as well - not to mention having to re-register all my software is a pain I'd rather not have to do.

Apple :: Windows On Macbook Air

Apr 24, 2009

I just bought a macbook air rev. a for my wife not long time ago, this is our first mac, she like it so far (probably other than the fan ramp up more than we like) she would like to use OSX as the primary OS but we still need to install windows on it.

Now my question is what is the best way to setup the windows, I'v read about all the options a bit but still need your opinions. The main limitation is the hardware on Macbook air, basically Core 2 duo at 1.6G, X3100 graphics but only 2G ram and 80G HD and no upgrade option.

I have both legit version of windows vista ultimate and windows XP professional, I can download windows 7 beta. I prefer windows vista over XP on my desktop. Here are a few options I have:
1.Run vista through bootcamp , but I don't feel that will be convenient for my wife, and chances are she will exclusively using vista.

2.Run vista through bootcamp, and use Vmware or parallel (which one?) run virtual machine of the bootcamp partition? Not sure how practical is this, will it be too slow because of the ram.

3. Run Xp through bootcamp, and use Vmware or parallel run virtual machine of the bootcamp partition?..........................

Apple :: Macbook Pro - Windows

Sep 24, 2009

i know this is like blasphemy but she now is required to have windows vista or better for her job and she just got this thing a month ago. she doesnt care it she has the mac os really yes she likes it but.. can the current gen macbook fully support windows vista or 7 by itself.. she doesnt want to be bothered running boot camp and other ways to run windows stuff. she used all her allowed funds to buy this thing now she is a bit annoyed with the situation not with apple at all..but with the mess of the job etc..she will be running in windows all day long and some of the programs she is told will not work right running on a mac os running as windows...so if she formats and wipes it clean can she run vista or 7 easily? im sure i can test it all out but since there are so many mac users i figured id ask first.

Apple :: Running Windows Only On A Macbook

Jul 24, 2009

I got the keyboard Eject key to work. Post has been updated accordingly.

This was done on an early 2009 white Macbook, with Vista SP2. Your mileage may vary. I'm not responsible for any damage or loss of files. On that note, always remember to backup data before doing a reformat!

First of all, I booted from the OS X Install disc, went into Disk Utility, clicked on the hard drive and selected Partition. From there, I created a new single partition, under options I selected Master Boot Record table. After it was done I rebooted, holding the ALT/Option key until I got into the boot manager, and I ejected the OS X disc and inserted the Windows disc (I am using the original Vista RTM disc in this case, and I installed SP1 and SP2 later)...........

Apple :: Macbook Pro For Running Windows

Jun 20, 2009

I absolutely love the new Macbook Pro 13" hardware. The unibody case and high quality panel makes me want to buy one right now. Nobody really offers anything similar. The problem for me, however is the fact that it comes with and runs OS X, and as far as I understand I will need to use Apple software (bootcamp) to run Windows. Is it at all possible to modify the computer to run Windows exclusively? And if I do run Windows through Apple software, are there any limitations to what I can do there or is it exactly the same as on a regular PC laptop? Running OS X is not an option, as alot of very specialized software I use is Windows only and I frankly dislike Apple OS.

Apple :: Running Windows On A Macbook

Jun 3, 2009

I'm going to uni next year to study CSc and have been told nearly every system they run is an XP machine. I also checked what software they run, and it turns out the majority aren't available for the mac. I asked them what would be best for the course and they told me I would get better support if I had a PC and that there may be workarounds for macs. However, the person I spoke to (head of faculty) has no experience whatsoever with OS X.

Anyway, the thing is I want to keep my current macbook mainly because I find it hard to part with and the second being I don't have the cash to dish out on another notebook of comparable quality.

The question: Which version of Windows (XP/Vista/7) runs best on a Macbook?

By this I mean which has the greater support (drivers), and is most stable to work with (incl/ battery life, less glitches etc).

Also, will Snow Leopard provide better compatibility with Windows and how? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide me with.

Apple :: Switching From Windows To Macbook Pro

Jul 10, 2009

I've been contemplating a Mac, too. I recently bought an HP HDX18t, and I'm trying to decide if I want to keep it or get a Macbook Pro 17). The thing that's holding me back is that for essentially the same price as a Macbook Pro with 4 gb of RAm, I have 8gb RAM, a 160gb Intel SSD plus a 500gb hard drive, 18.4" high def monitor that is in the 16x9 format (I can have two IE windows open with no overlap), a Blu Ray burner, QX9300 Quad processors. I also love the full numeric keypad on the keyboard.

My first 3 computers were Macs (SE, IIsi, and Quadra 840AV), and I switched to PC when Windows 95 came out because I was tired of incompatibilities between my Mac and work and college computers. I was also tired of cool apps for the PC not being available for the Mac. Honestly, Windows has never given me any significant problems. Sure, I've had crashes and performance slowdowns, but I had those on my Macs, too. I've never had a virus on Windows. I've really never regretted switching to Windows...........

Apple :: MBP 2nd HDD - How To Install Windows On It

Apr 20, 2010

I have a MacBookPro5,2 that I've recently installed a 2nd HDD using an optibay caddy where the superdrive had been.

I would like to have Windows 7 running natively on that 2nd drive. Can I do this via Bootcamp? Or do I use the OS X Disk Utility app to format it as FAT and then proceed to install the windows OS without using bootcamp? I assume I would then need to install the apple drivers that are on my snow leaopard install disk.

Is that about right? Will I be able to selective boot by holding the Opt key at bootup jsut as if I had used bootcamp?
