Apple :: Unibody Is Getting Warm With Low Usage
May 28, 2009
I have my macbook pro getting pretty hot without much usage.
Eg. I am on integrated graphics right now and my cpu usage is roughly 30 percent (inclusive of system and user) and nothing is very intensive. Just a couple of firefox tabs in a firefox process, colloquy and itunes. I have about a 70 degree CPU temp and a 57 degree GPU temp on the 9400M.
It gets worse when I go on discrete and do the same things. My CPU often hits 80-90 degrees with my GPU being right htere at about 70. I'm pretty sure i need to get this checked out, but does anyone else have the same issue as me?

I have a dell inspiron N5050 core i5, 8GB RAM but when I run applications like GNS3, the cpu usage runs up to 100% and freezes whereas the RAM usage is only about 2.7GB (that is, about 33%). How can I get the RAM to function optimally?
I even had to upgrade to Windows 8 thinking it would solve the problem but here I am stuck with the same problem.

I have a summer 09 2.26GHz MBP w/ 2 gigs of ram. The first time I installed Snow Leopard I just did an upgrade, but I noticed a hit in performance... Spaces got slower, Firefox would lag between tabs, apps would take some time to launch, etc. I recently used time machine to backup my Leopard installation, clean installed to Snow Leopard, and used Migration Assistant to move everything back over (including apps). I'm still noticing the same hit in performance when compared to my Leopard install. I thought Snow Leopard was supposed to be faster, not slower?
Anywho, I noticed my ram usage is being choked up. Using iStat Pro I have been consistently monitoring my ram usage. As of now I am running Finder, Firefox (2 tabs), iTunes, Adium, and Skype. This is what the iStat Pro ram readout is giving me:
Wired: 205 mb
Active: 964 mb
Inactive: 496 mb
Free: 121 mb
Are these levels normal? It seems like I'm using an abnormal amount of ram for not a whole lot of intensive applications. Could this be the source of my slow-ness in Snow Leopard?
In addition, I installed Windows 7 Professional via Bootcamp on a 32gb partition. 7 also seems to be pretty darn slow from what I expect. I have Windows Experience Indexes around 5+ out of 7.9 except for the gaming graphics category (4+), but I notice slowness when switching between apps (using Windows counterparts/equivalents to the apps mentioned above). Another example of slowness would be how it took about 20 minutes to extract a 2.5gb Pro/E installer file.
This slowness is starting to bug me! Am I hitting the limits of my machine, or is there something wrong? If there is something wrong, what can I do to fix it?

I have a Macbook Unibody, 2.0ghz, a 320gb 7200rpm (new hdd, it will arrive this week), and 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
He has a Macbook Pro (non-unibody), 2.5ghz, 5400rpm 250GB, 2GB DDR2 RAM.
BUT, his is a 15" little bit older model, non-unibody. But he dropped it ,the super drive is a little finicky because of it, but he did a SMART Test the harddrive is fine, and he bought a new bottom piece for it because the blemishes are bothering him. He has a 8600M GT, while i have a 9400M GT.
So, it's a trade between Unibody Macbook, 13.3 LED Screen, Huge trackpad, 2.0GHZ, 9400M GT, 4GB DDR3, 320GB 7200RPM 16MB HDD. (Battery is 100% using coconutbattery)
Macbook Pro 2008, 2.5Ghz, 5400RPM 250GB, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 8600M GT, 15.4 CCFL, non-huge (lol) trackpad. Super Drive is not working 100% capacity though.
But honestly, Im not too sure about the HDD because its been dropped,i mprly gonna replace it, and the super drive is broken. but he is including a new piece for the bottom.

Is the keyboard for the unibody MBP EXACTLY the same as the white macbook keyboards except for it being black? I thought on the apple website it said that the keys were curved a little bit which is not the case on the white mackbook.

I am currently saving up for a laptop and i first thought about the sony fw because of its high res screen and blu ray player along with the 2.66 processor. I dont use any really demanding software but would like to play a few games.
Im also looking at the macs beacuse they look amazing and have better build quality than sony...i think. will i notice any significant difference when web browsing/light gaming with the faster processor listed in the title. The ram is not an issue because i would upgrade it myself as its cheaper.Im also going to upgrade the hdd to a 7200rpm one.
Also what are the macbook pros viewing angles like for watching films, as my sister has a unibody macbook and its pretty bad for watching and films.

I'm looking at upgrading the hard drive in my Unibody MacBook. I've been looking at 320GB and 500GB drives. I'm not really sure I need the 500GB, as the 160GB still has a bit of room left over with a 32GB Windows 7 install. But I'd like to increase the size of the Windows install.
Anyway, I was set on the Hitachi 7K320, but I've noticed that a lot of people were having issues with them in the unibody MBP. There weren't a lot of answers in the upgrade forum. So I'm here to see if any of you guys have had issues with the unibody MacBooks.
Also, I'd like to go ahead and get some suggestions for other drives that you guys have experience with. I'd like it to be a pretty good speed, so 7200 is preferable. However, I place more importance on noise and vibration. The Fujitsu 5400 rpm drive in the MacBook now is a little slow for my tastes, but acceptable. But I'd like a new drive to be at least as quiet. I've got a 100GB 7200RPM WD drive in my Dell that's really loud, and it gets annoying sometimes.

I've got 15" MBP (umm early 2009? has removable battery), and I was playing TF2 in windows XP the other day when it BSOD'. So I had to hard restart it, and go back into OS X. This is when I noticed a weird "growling or bumping" sound coming from the left fan which is kinda loud in a quite room. Its almost like a rattling sound.

I've had my MBP unibody 17 for almost a year now... it's been heating up for the past couple months (or longer?). I really haven't thought to talk about it until now.
Basically, my fans start to kick it quite often after just regular web browsing. It happens quite often if I start streaming a video or watching youtube. I don't have many apps open either. My laptop is in a cool place on hard surface that doesn't absorb heat easy either. I almost want to by a fan to put under it.
I installed SMC fan control and "fan control" since the beginning. I currently have fan control only.
Is there anything specific I can check that causes the laptop to heat up or if I messed with any "internal" settings by accident to cause it to heat up?
I almost want to think I to think it's something I downloaded or something I screwed up. My brother has the exact same computer and it runs around or under 50 all the time while running more programs than I do at times.
I'm just browsing right now with adium and and chrome running and it's running at 62 degrees.

The aluminum unibody design has been here for a while. With probably the most significant running change being the closing up of the battery compartment so that user change-over is limited to a surgical, versus an on-the-fly service issue.
Do you think that this design is here to stay for awhile in the MackBook (pros), the next couple of updates anyway?
Or do you think it is just a trend that will yield to some other trend to catch the fancy of fickle consumer whims for something new, for newness sake? (back to lightweight plastic, perhaps). I'm sure the apple marketing machine can spin polycarbonate another life as a "space-age miracle of modern science", or some-such blather. The base MacBook notwithstanding, of course.

I thought it might be nice for all the macbook pro users with the 15.4" screen and unibody style to have their own place to discuss topics, enjoy! I just bought my mbp and think its the bomb. I've never had such great quality in any notebook before. I purchased and returned the HP HDX 18t and was shafted by the HP executives for getting the worst notebook from the HP home and home office website. I was so sick of buying windows based pc's that I saved until I could get the new mbp. I've never been happier with any purchase, and I would do it all over again, even for a more decked out (off brand, lol) system. You can watch the video review I did on the HDX 18t in my signature and instantly feel better about owning a mbp!

Unfortunetely I received a unit with uneven backlighting on the screen (9C84), with a few column of light bleed towards the center that goes from the bottom of the screen and reaching up past mid screen. It is not visible with normal use, but on dark solid backgrounds, or when watching movies with dark scenes, it is definetely there.
Do all unibody MBP have this backlight bleed problem? Are there ones out there with perfectly even backlighting or atleast with very very minimal bleed? Just trying to find the statistics of this problem. I will be going to the Apple store this weekend to check out the MBPs they have on display to see how widespread is the problem.
If this is indeed a problem for all unibody MBPs, then I wont even bother and just accept what I have on a premium product.

Just installed Windows 7 on my new 15" unibody MBP. The audio output through the speakers is quite low, and realize this is a known issue.
Is there anyway (third party or otherwise) to fix this? How using external speakers? No low volume issues using headphones which is a relief.

I just want to be able to have two screens (1 monitor, the other my MBP screen) going at the same time and all that good stuff...
What I am looking for, if someone is willing, is for a specific list of hardware and software that I will need to do this (if possible). And in case it matters, no I do not have Windows installed via Boot Camp or anything like that.
The sites I have been looking at today are somewhat confusing even when it comes to what hardware to buy. I am in no way new to computers, so I have a general understanding of the components, but I just really need someone who has done this or knows how to do this, to basically just list everything I need.
