Apple :: Normal Ram Usage
Sep 24, 2009I have a summer 09 2.26GHz MBP w/ 2 gigs of ram. The first time I installed Snow Leopard I just did an upgrade, but I noticed a hit in performance... Spaces got slower, Firefox would lag between tabs, apps would take some time to launch, etc. I recently used time machine to backup my Leopard installation, clean installed to Snow Leopard, and used Migration Assistant to move everything back over (including apps). I'm still noticing the same hit in performance when compared to my Leopard install. I thought Snow Leopard was supposed to be faster, not slower?
Anywho, I noticed my ram usage is being choked up. Using iStat Pro I have been consistently monitoring my ram usage. As of now I am running Finder, Firefox (2 tabs), iTunes, Adium, and Skype. This is what the iStat Pro ram readout is giving me:
Wired: 205 mb
Active: 964 mb
Inactive: 496 mb
Free: 121 mb
Are these levels normal? It seems like I'm using an abnormal amount of ram for not a whole lot of intensive applications. Could this be the source of my slow-ness in Snow Leopard?
In addition, I installed Windows 7 Professional via Bootcamp on a 32gb partition. 7 also seems to be pretty darn slow from what I expect. I have Windows Experience Indexes around 5+ out of 7.9 except for the gaming graphics category (4+), but I notice slowness when switching between apps (using Windows counterparts/equivalents to the apps mentioned above). Another example of slowness would be how it took about 20 minutes to extract a 2.5gb Pro/E installer file.
This slowness is starting to bug me! Am I hitting the limits of my machine, or is there something wrong? If there is something wrong, what can I do to fix it?

Feb 22, 2010I am looking at getting a MB 13" or a MBP 13". Can I upgrade the Ram in the normal macbook? its saying 2gig of ram, where as the MBP can upgrade to 4. both only have one slot inside for ram. Can the normal MB take 4 gig stick and run it as 4?

Dec 10, 2009i have a 13 inch macbook pro and the latch cut-out area has cut my finger... yes, thats right, it has extracted blood from my index finger. I thought that the edges on the latch area where sharp but this is ridiculous. I want to call up Apple and complain about this.
Any of you ever had any issues with this? Look at your aluminum macbook and see how sharp those two points are where the opening lid latch is and you will see what i am talking about.
Apple :: What Is The Normal Temperature For A MacBook Running
May 4, 2009I bought the unibody MacBook some weeks ago, probably nearing a month now. And I'd like to perhaps get some answers on some things that have been bothering me a little here and there. I've called AppleCare but they almost always tell me to bring my MacBook down somewhere to have a look at it, and that is not a very viable option. Unless it of course is something major.
1. What is the normal temperature for a MacBook running say Firefox with maybe 5+ tabs open and a video streaming in one of those tabs? Along with maybe aMSN and Pages. Before I had SMCFancontrol running, with power attached it would run at or between 55~61 degrees celsius or so. Currently with SMCFancontrol running, it runs at about 45~51 celsius but the fans are working doubly hard.
While running games on my Win XP partition, it gets hot, sometimes if I put it on my lap for a second or two, it almost feels like the surface could scald me. But I guess that's because I'm running games.
2. Is it more advisable to have the battery out or in if when I'm at home and using just the power adapter?
Applecare has advised that I leave it in all the time, but I'm not entirely convinced on this. Macs aren't PCs but most if not all of the people I know that use PCs have the battery out all the time and only plug it back in when they need it.............

Dec 27, 2009I check my battery count almost every day, what I have noticed is that the full charge capacity decreases by around 5 every day. Three days ago it was at 5182, and now it's at 5169. I run my laptop on external power most of the time. Is such steady decrease normal?

Apr 3, 2009I am making a 10 minute or so powerpoint presentation that will include pictures, music, video, and sound effects in Office mac 2008, on my macbook.
Once I am finished, I will save it onto a USB key. Lets say I now bring the USB key and open the powerpoint in the lecture hall at my school, will the videos and sound effects still work? I know that the pictures will, but not sure about other media content like video and sound effects.
Would it be better to do this in Office 2007 in Windows?

Mar 10, 2013I have a dell inspiron N5050 core i5, 8GB RAM but when I run applications like GNS3, the cpu usage runs up to 100% and freezes whereas the RAM usage is only about 2.7GB (that is, about 33%). How can I get the RAM to function optimally?
I even had to upgrade to Windows 8 thinking it would solve the problem but here I am stuck with the same problem.

May 28, 2009I have my macbook pro getting pretty hot without much usage.
Eg. I am on integrated graphics right now and my cpu usage is roughly 30 percent (inclusive of system and user) and nothing is very intensive. Just a couple of firefox tabs in a firefox process, colloquy and itunes. I have about a 70 degree CPU temp and a 57 degree GPU temp on the 9400M.
It gets worse when I go on discrete and do the same things. My CPU often hits 80-90 degrees with my GPU being right htere at about 70. I'm pretty sure i need to get this checked out, but does anyone else have the same issue as me?

Sep 26, 2009Double-clicking files in the Finder under Snow Leopard launches applications associated with the types of the files regardless of which applications used to create those files. I like it but I can see why those users who have been using Mac for 2 decades hate it. Other than that it forces one to adopt a new habit, I think it makes sense both conceptually and practically to ignore creator codes for most users.

Jan 9, 2010I'd like to encrypt my entire hard drive in this MBP. I use Time Machine, though -- and my understanding is that FileVault (a) is exploitable, and (b) requires that users be logged out for backups to occur. Both of those are big problems for me.
Behind that, the easiest way to encrypt things that really, truly should be protected somehow is to use Disk Utility to create a protected image, or such is my assumption. From what I understand, a .dmg can be converted to ISO within Windows (or opened with 7-zip). Is it at all possible for an encrypted .dmg to be converted/opened under Windows?
I ask because I'm not convinced I won't be on a Windows 7 notebook at some point, especially with updated HP Envy and Sony Vaio models coming. Could be wrong, but I like flexibility.
(I know that TrueCrypt serves a similar function to encrypted .dmg files via Disk Utility and is cross-platform, but still.)

Apr 17, 2009Alright so I just want to know if I should be worried or not about this:
Lately, when I open the lid, the drive starts "moaning". You know that sound as if you just inserted a CD or DVD into it. It does it three times with a couple of seconds gap in between.
It still reads just fine, I just tried it with a DVD, but I'm still concerned about the sound.
Usually there is just a small and short sound when opening the lid, just like when booting up, when (as much as I can figure) the head realigns to center.

Feb 5, 2009To start I should remind everyone that i'm not a mac user. I have never owned a mac or used OSX properly before today. As such, my opinions should be taken as coming from someone who has much knowledge and experience as far as PC's are concerned, but who is a total mac n00b.
First Impressions
When I first walked over to the Macbooks I was quite taken aback. The build quality is out of this world. In fact, I immediately walked over to the latest PC laptops to compare and immediately thought "manufacturing FAIL". Really, the Macbooks are italian sports cars, and PC's are 30 year old farm tractors to use the typical "car analogy".

I really only had any interest in the Macbook when I first went to the Apple stand, but came away with the intention of buying a MacBook Pro. Let me explain:
The MacBook's build quality is awesome. It's solid, no creaking plastic or flexable build, completely and utterly solid. Awesome.............

Aug 4, 2009Why the zoom % of webpages randomly changes whilst I am surfing the internet with Mozilla on my Lenovo S10e laptop? It is very frustrating and when this happens I go down to the right hand corner of the application and select 100%. Is this a zoom problem or just the fact it is resizing the pages because of the screen size being very small. Are there any updates or software needed to overcome this problem.

Oct 13, 2009I just double-clicked a .xls document on MacOSX and despite having iWork installed it resirted to opening up Microsoft Excel in Parallels.
Now i know i can go and change what application opens up .xls docs permanently, but there must be a way to disable and completely prevent this action happening with any document on OSX.
Basically, i never ever want OSX to even consider opening Parallels to open a document. Does anyone know where that setting could be?

Mar 7, 2009I have been speculating over this prospect giving the direction that Apple took with the starting price of the 24" iMac (upgrade everything else and downgrade the VRAM).
I mean, this is something I would like to see, but I wonder if it is a smart move on Apple's part given how much they make off the current MBP's with the so called Apple Tax.

Jul 5, 2014I have an Ideapad Z580 with a 30mbps cable internet connection (running Win8.1). I've tested the cable modem with a number of laptops in my house, and the Ideapad is the only one that regularly times out on loading webpages.
What I've tried:
1. Updated Realtek Ethernet driver to newest version
2. Changed to Google Pub DNS servers (no difference from cable providers)
3. Changed power settings to High Performance (rather than balance or the battery setting)
4. Turned off IPV6 on the ethernet adapter
The problem seems to be random. Pages will load quickly and then suddenly they all time out (such as google and lenovo.com). When I ping both the url and the ip address they time out during these periods.
The problem is definitely with the laptop and not the cable connection as such. The modem does not need to be reset, as other laptops in the house load webpages normally.
