After a month of using my laptop, today is actually the first day I'm trying out this slot load drive.
I inserted a CD given by my instructor, it was running really slow and some cranky / buzzing noise could be heard from it. I mean is it normal ? It loads kinda slow too.?
I have been having some problems with my slot-load drive (TEAC DVW-28SLC). It has been coastering a lot of DVD-DL disks lately and overall it is very slow. I have been reading that they are putting faster drives in the newer M1530's. After a long battle with XPS support, I convinced them to replace the drive. Do you think I will get one of the faster drives or will I be stuck with the same drive? I really don't use it all that much, but when I do want to use it, it is a major pain, especially when it coasters expensive DL-DVD's.
I'm thinking of removing my DVD drive and replacing it with a caddy and hard drive as explained here.
I don't use the DVD drive very often and would much prefer a 500GB or 1TB hard drive in there. The DVD drive can then be used externally via the eSATA port using this cable.
The ideal solution would be to use this NewmodeUS caddy as it supports the larger 12.7mm 1TB 2.5" hard drives and has a removable faceplate. The problem is the price.
At $55 including postage to the UK plus customs, VAT and clearance fees on top it's going to work out pretty expensive for what is essentially a slimline SATA to SATA extension
I like the slot load drive, I wouldn't want to go back to the traditional ones. However I've always thought it was a bit rough in the sense that you have to kind of force it in and it makes a lot of noise. Also when you eject it, it kind of 'spits' it out.
Would there be any lag on video playback on the 8X Slot-Load Blu-Ray Reader versus the 4X Slot-Load Blu-Ray Reader/Writer for the Dell Studio XPS 1640?
where to find a slot load DVD DL or Blue Ray drive for my m1710? I got a pioneer K06(?) for my 9300 and the bezel is too small for the hole and it sits too far back. Works great, but doesnt look so good.
Does anyone have any information or updated drivers for this drive. The only Blueray drive listed on Dells driver page is the BC-5600S.
The laptop is only 2 months old. Is this a newer drive or is the 5600 the replacement.
I am not happy with the performance of the drive so far, blueray movies sometimes stop while it searches the disk, and I am yet to successfully burn a Dual-layer disk (verbatim).
I have a Studio XPS 1640 and put a expansion slot SSD in the expansion/express port (the part that holdes the remotes and such).
The problem is that I cannot remove the drive, the drive does not seem to spring out like in all the other computers I have used it in.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get access to the inside of that bay by removing the back? I took the metal back off but it was not directly visible ..
I just got the xps 1640 today and I'm very distracted by the loud system fan. It's audible all the time even when the computer is idle. I haven't been doing anything intensive on my computer either. The fan starts as soon as windows loads and never stops. I know this laptop has heat issues but I checked the core temp and it is only between 38-45degrees C. I know the fan can get louder under load, this is what I would describe as idle but still, it seems way too loud. It was raining earlier and I could hear the fan over the sound of raindrops hitting my roof. It's getting unbearable!!
Has anyone had the same experience? Or more importantly does anyone have a way to reduce the speed of the fan slighty? Speedfan doesn't seem to support my motherboard so I can't do it there.

On an old Inspiron 8000 laptop, I have a CD-ROM drive that only fits in the floppy drive slot. Will the BIOS recognize a boot CD in this new location? I believe it's an 18000 motherboard.
The M1330 has been out for awhile now. I was wondering if there are any new options/manufacturers for the CD/DVD slot drive? My device manager says I have the Mata
it won't let me type out the whole name, i guess the forum thinks its a bad word), but when I cracked open my laptop the other day I noticed my drive said it was a Panasonic.
Drive works fine with the exception that it can be loud at time (especially loading and ejecting discs). I was wondering or hoping that there might be some other or better options out there.
I just received my new Studio 1555 and a week or two ago, I had second thoughts about not getting the Blue-Ray player. Is it possible to easily upgrade this through Dell or by other means?
Has anyone else upgraded their slot load drive from the DVD-R to Blue-Ray?
I own a Studio 15, bought in UK. Now I am in India. For some reason my optical drive has stopped working properly. It can hardly read disks and it ejects them back out.
Trying about 10 times, sometime it is able to read the disk. I have tried various disks and have tried reinstalling OS too but in vein.
Just wondering if everyone else's slot loading drive vibrates the entire machine when in use as well? It's much more noticeable than my old laptop and Im worried the vibrations might damage the hard drive over the long term.
I8200 with orginal 40GB hitachi HD DK23EB-40. So I left the notebook run overnight (nothing new) has cooling pad and another fan sitting on the side running air over it. When I came to in in the morning it was locked so I rebooted. I got an error message and it doesn't want to boot. It does boot with another HD I have so the HD is the problem. I previously had a problem with another used HD that had a problem like this on another laptop and had someone i know work on it. To me it looked like he made a partition and placed the whole corupted OS with files inside of a fresh os install. I don't want to try and do a repair with the reinstall CD. Tried that once and didn't work so I don't want to to take a chance. Anyone know what he might have done? I have partition magic 8 if this is what's needed, but how to do this?
I replaced the hard drive on my inspiron 1545 and tried to restore it with the dell data safe disks that I made when I got the machine. Windows 7 loaded but I couldn't do anything with it, It was very slow, I couldn't even get it to update. So I loaded in the windows 7 disk that came with it and now I have windows up and running and updated. My question is what drivers do I need to install. I went to dell/support and entered my service tag number and it came up with a list of drivers (46 of them), some I know I need but others seem to be for things I don't know if I have on the computer. How do I know which ones I need?
Also I read something about a file called Dell System Software but its not on the drivers list. Do I need it or not?
I'm trying to load a new hard drive for my Dell Studio 1557 LT due to the original failed. I've worked on many PCs and LTs before and loaded software so I know the basics and then some. Problem is, when the LT boots from the OS from an external dvd drive -Win 7 64 when it attempts a write to the hard drive at the same point in the installation every time it blue screens then reboots. I cannot capture the blue screen info due to the immediate reboot. I have tried many utilities and other hard drives but the LT wont let me write to the hd to load an OS. I tried loading a hd from another pc then install it into this LT, same results blue screen then reboot. Very strange as if the LT wont allow a new hard drive or OS to be loaded. I've been trying to get this loaded for a week now and have tried everything. The hd was even DoD low level formatted too. Is there s Dell disk I need to get it started ?
I just ordered the XPS 1640 from the dell Outlet I need the part number for the 4X Slot Load Blu-ray Disc (BD) Burner
(Writes to DVD/CD/BD) so I can replace the dvdrw drive that came with the system.
Also just to play a game: Name the price you will pay for it.

I am probably getting the sxps 1640 and I was wondering would a bluray drive be worth it? I do have a Sony 40v4100 lcd tv. Can this drive output 24p through the hdmi port? And why isnt it a bluray burner like the xps m1530 line? How hard would it be to swap in a bluray drive, do you have to pull the whole computer apart to do so? Should I just spend the money on an external bluray player for my tv?
I just got my system the other day and I didn't get it with the blu-ray drive. It seems it wasn't even on the configuration menu when I ordered my system.
Can anyone check our their device manager and tell me the blu-ray drive you currently have? I'd like to buy one and install it myself (Don't worry I'm pretty tech savvy).
Is there a simple way to remove the plastic blank that ships in the express card slot?
I have to use a dental pick to catch a corner of it and pull it out. The media slot works fine because you just push in on it until it pops out but the express card doesn't seem to do this? ..
