Dell :: E 6400 Vs E 6500 Primary Concern: Screen
Jan 16, 2009
I'm a webdeveloper and i'm currenty searching for a new business partner laptop. I have decided on the Dell brand. I was about to pickup a macbook - but after the TONS of problems i read on Mac forums, i just won't give Steve Jobs my money ;-)
So what i would like to ask from you is the following:
Which you prefer between E 6400 and E 6500. My primary concern ofcourse is the SCREEN.
Which model and which screen option to choose.

My laptop's fan WILL NOT turn off. Its spinning at blow dryer speeds all the time.
Initially I thought I had a lemon with some heat issues, so I returned it and DELL sent me a new one. I received it today and it has the same problem as the one before.
Apparently this laptop runs super hot when in the docking station-the reason being, I have no clue.
im worried that the internals are going to overheat cuz this fan is blowing out really hot air.
When I use it on the go or anywhere outside of the docking station-no fan problems.
Would hate to lose my docking station/external monitor...

I have a problem with hdmi output to my TV screen.
I have Y510P (i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz, Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600
& NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M, Win 8.1 64-bit(6.3 build 9600), all with latest drivers )
My TV is Panasonic TH-L32B6. When I connect my laptop to TV it shows me awful picture quality and notification that “this is not optimal screen resolution for the primary display. The optimal res. Is 1280x720”. But with 1280x720 it’s still awful. It works fine just with 1024x768 res. I have no such a problem with my other TV LG 47LS570Y. How can i fix picture quality with higher resolution? I tried another OS like Ubuntu and a couple of hdmi cables…(see attachment)

The laptop runs great, but now as it gets later in the night, things begin to quiet down.
As I sit here in front of the tablet in complete silence, there is a constant buzzing(kinda high pitched, you can't hear it over the fan when it's on) noise coming from what seems to be right under the touchpad, which is where the harddrive is located. Could it be the harddrive?
Any thoughts? And also, is there anyway to test this seeing as how I don't have another 1.8" drive to swap out with?
(I hope it's the HDD, seeing as how i plan to get an SSD soon)

Well, let me start off by saying that I received by M1530 at the beginning of this year as an exchange for a Vostro 1500 I had a bunch of little issues with.
To be honest, there was nothing truly wrong with the Vostro 1500, but I'm a sly-talking-Computer-Science-major that was sick of dell support giving me the run-around dozens of times, so I bullied them and got a $1400 system to replace my original $800 purchase
Now the dreaded heat issues related to the 8600m gt are starting to rear their ugly heads. Dell covers this issue a year past the regular warranty, so I have until February or something for the card to die or warrant a replacement.
So my issue is that I originally did not want to deal with dell support so I went ahead and put some AS-5 on the GPU and CPU. Previously I was experiences system shut down during heavy gaming.
The AS-5 only lowered the temperature a couple of degrees average (celsius) and it's been over 200 hours for the curing ......

Whenever I play any type of game that needs a moving screen or any graphics at all, my screen will just shut off.
No sound comes out of the computer, the backlight isn't on, the screen is just dead.
I've been turning it off by taking out the battery and removing the power plug but haven't tried holding down the power button yet

Whenever I switch on my Inspiron 6400, either via the On/Off or Media Direct button, the screen almost always goes blank within less than a second. I would like to reset the computer to its original factory settings via F8 or reinstall the operating system via F12 but cannot do so because of the blank screen. Occasionally, I hear the sound which accompanies the window screen a few seconds after switching the computer on; the computer will also sometimes whirr and the number lock and wife symbols will illuminate, all whilst the screen remains blank.
This problem first developed yesterday when I received the message "NTLDR is missing". With a bit of perseverance yesterday, I could eventually get the computer to work by repeatedly switching it on an off, but this no longer seems possible today. My computer has Windows Vista.

I've had my trusty Dell Inspiron 6400 since 2006 and it's still going strong, but over the last couple of months
I've noticed that the screen doesn't appear to be as bright as it used to be. It's as if the brightness isn't set to full, but when you try to increase it you discover it is at full brightness.
Can LCD screens become dimmer over time and would a replacement screen fix this?

My main concern is that I've heard that if you want Media Direct you need to install it first before you format the Hard Drive and Install XP so it doesn't corrupt the Media buttion .....

I'm considering buying a Dell e6400 or Dell e6500. I'd prefer the I'd prefer a 15.4' screen. However, if I get that I feel like I probably should get a higher res than the basic 1280 x 800. Ideally I want 1440 x 900.
The problem is Dell only seems to offer the higher resolution in a glossy screen on either model (at least in Canada) - "UltraSharp Wide WXGA+ (1440x900) LED Display-Brushed Metal Black". I spoke to Dell and they said it's something in b/w an anti-glare screen and a consumer glossy screen, but I'm not sure what to make of that.
I'm wondering if anyone has this type of screen and can tell me what their experience has been? How glossy is it?
I mainly will use my laptop for writing and office work - in coffee shops, offices or the library - so I don't like have a screen that is reflective. I much prefer an anti-glare screen. I've thought about just buying the e6400 with the anti-glare 1280x800 LED screen, but like I say, would prefer to get a bigger screen if possible, so wanted to see how glossy these screens really are.

I have an Inspiron 6400 and recently a white line appeared on the screen. I took it to a repair shop and they said that the monitor needs to be replaced.
So firstly
I would like to know if it is possible to fix it without changing the screen, mainly because it is close to impossible finding a WSXGA screen in the country where I am staying now.

I am trying to figure out if my video card has gone bad on my 6400 and wanted to know if can be replaced. I have a nvidia 7200 256 mb gpu.. I am running into a problem where my screen just goes black in the middle of everything. The problem also occurs when hooking the laptop up to a monitor. Initially I thought I had a bad inverter board and bad video drivers, both have been replaced but the problem still persist. I ran the diagnostics and the screen went black during the video check. I have to reboot the pc to get the screen back on then the problem happens again.
Can the video card be replaced on the 6400?

I am going to upgrate my Acer 5672.
On tigerdirect I found 2 nice Hds
Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9250421AS 250GB Mobile Hard Drive - 2.5", 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA-300 for $74
and
Hitachi / TravelStar 7K200 / 200GB / 7200 / 16MB / 2.5" Mobile / SATA-150 / Hard Drive for $90
It seems to me first one is much better, more size , more speed, but I don't understand why it is cheaper.
One guy told me Segate's disks overheat laptops. Is it true ?....
So... why is it cheaper? I everything ok with this brand ?
I am also planning to add more memory, 4GB instead 1GB.
Should I be concern about overheat ?

I am thinking about getting either the M1550 or M1330. I've read all kinds of online reviews, looked at specs, etc., ad nauseum.
What I am looking for in this post is USER OPINIONS from those of you who actually own any of these laptops and have used them for a while now.
Basically, I want to use it for entertainment (cd/dvd burning, movies, iTunes), productivity, net surfing, and some occasional gaming (desktop covers that base for me).

I just received my new Latitude 6500. Build seems good but the display seems a bit washed out.
It's my first laptop so maybe it's just me getting accustomed to the display. I opted for the LED LCD WXGA+.
The display is very bright but the contrast doesn't seem the same as my desktop monitor.
Colors seems a bit faded, not as vibrant as I had hoped. For example, it's hard to see the unshaded boxes on the list to the left of this page--where it says "most reviewed laptops"

This is not the newest topic but it's been well described that the Latitude E series' touchpad is crappy. With the launch of Windows 7, I thought that I'd give the new touchpad drivers a try. Still as crappy.
This is the worst touchpad and pointing stick that I can remember using on a laptop. Normally I wouldn't care, but actually having a terrible nav system really stinks more than I thought it would.
Well, my stop-gap solution was to simply remove the Dell touchpad drivers altogether and go native with whatever Windows 7 detected. What an amazing difference! The touchpad is usable now (it doesn't freeze and it tracks much better).....

Im trying to gauge what everyone else is experiencing when they are docking their Latitudes.
More specifically, as it relates to fan usage and general temperature.
That said, I have three questions:
1) If you own the Nvidia and you have fan issues, have you just resigned to the fact that your fan runs all the time or are you still looking for a solution?
2) If you own the Intel Graphics card, can you share your fan experience(s) when your laptop is docked?
3) Lastly, please indicate if you are using the laptop open when docked, closed with one external monitor or, two external monitors.

I am connecting the E1705 to an external LCD via DVI - HDMI.
I am however unable to use both the laptop LCD and the external LCD (37" Sharp 1080p)
You have to pick one or the other, when the internal LCD works I only get a desktop screen on the Sharp, if I close the lid of the laptop, only then the external LCD becomes active.

I want to run dual boot with windows 7 and ubuntu. The problem is that i already got 4 primary partitions, even tho I only use one myself.
One partition is an OEM partition of 39 mb. One is at 797 kb, and I have totally no clue what this partitions is for. Ive tried googling for hours, but I cant find anything. And then I have the 100 mb partitions created by windows 7.
What of those partitions can I delete? All of them? And do anyone know what the 797 kb dynamic data partition is?

I have a dvd with Windows 7 Beta on and I am trying to isntall it so it will dual boot with Vista on my XPS M1330.
Now the first thing I have to do to dual boot is to create a primary partition for Windows 7 or to shrink the C drive using vista's disk management.
I have tried many different programs to shrink my harddrive or create a new primary partition so that I can dual boot Windows 7 Beta.

what I can safely do with my new 17rse? I'd like to do something along the lines of putting a 32gb mSata (no option pre-purchase) as cache for my HDD but does this become pointless if I'd also like to add a larger 256gb SSD as a primary drive with OS on it?

I bought an HP DV6-2138CA and the 500GB hard drive has 4 primary partitions. There is a primary before the Windows7 partition (probably from Win7), the recovery partition primary and the HP tools primary. I created 1 set of recovery DVDs, as well burned the swsetup directory on a dvd.
I then installed Win7 Pro x64, after imaging the current Win7x64 Home, clobbering the Win7 home partition. Now I realize that one of the remaining 3 primary partitions have to be deleted if I want to create an extended partition to hold logical partitions for my use.
As a test I put a spare 160GB hard drive in the laptop and ran the recovery DVDs. It reinstalled Windows7 Home Premium and created the HP tools directory. However the recovery partition was not recreated. Rather than relying on one set of recovery DVDs I guess the only way to make a second recovery DVD set at this stage, is to copy my existing DVD set to a backup set.
My question is can I safely nuke the recovery partition, HP Tools partition and still get warranty support and if necessary send it into HP?
Update:
The recovery discs that I created are not copyable due to read errors. I restored the Win7 Home Premium but friggin HP says that I can not create another set! There is no HPCD.sys file at the root of the recovery partition that I can rename to get around this ridiculous restriction!

I purchased a Dell 7720 (contains 2 1TB HDD's) after speaking to Dell technical support who reassured me that when I install an mSATA drive, it is possible to install the OS on the drive and use it as the primary boot device.
So I received my 7720, plugged in the mSATA drive and cloned the OS partition to the drive. When I restarted the machine, behold... it is not in the list of bootable drives, however it has been recognized as an mSATA drive. After messing around with the BIOS for 30 minutes, I am unable to get it to be a bootable device.
