Dell :: E6500 WUXGA Screen Corners Dark, Being Replaced
Jul 1, 2009
I received a Latitude E6500 with a WUXGA screen with the dreaded screen brightness problems. This is the same problem discussed here:
E6500 WUXGA -
The bottom corners on mine are very dark. I had been expecting a little, and had been planning on dealing with it like I have with some laptops in the past, but it's kind of outrageous how discolored they are. Screen brightness evenness is very poor as well, with the bottom part of the screen significantly brighter.
My purchase order lists my screen as:
Module,Liquid Crystal Display 15WU+,2CCFL,Samsung Maybach/Avia
How are people getting the exact model number and part number for their displays?
At any rate, it's the bad Samsung kind of screen. A lot of threads including the one I linked to state that there is also an LG/Philips screen that is much better for the same Dell WUXGA screen component.
Has anyone managed to get Dell to change a Samsung screen for an LG/Philips? If so, how did you do so?
My chat rep tells me that they can only replace using whatever was in the order initially.
the question is pretty much in the title. I'm thinking about buying a E6500 Latitude with WUXGA 2CCFL display. The comments about the 2CCFL backlight I've read so far haven't been very positive, but I haven't owned a backlight so far and can't decide how serious the possible issues are.
I'm mainly working in a text editor on a black background or surfing the web, in particular I'm not doing any photo editing. I'll watch a DVD from time to time but I'm not used to the best display and it shouldn't be too hard to meet my demands when it comes to colors. But of course the display shouldn't suck,
displaying wrong colors or being bright at some places and dark at others. And it should be sufficiently bright for working under normal lighting conditions without having to sit right in front of a wall with curtains closed as it is the case with my current display.
The alternative would be a WSXGA display with LED light and I'd probably choose a E6400 instead of a E6500 in this case. But I could also buy it on a E6500. I'd appreciate any suggestions helping me which display to pick.
Anyone with this WUXGA (1920x1200) LCD, do you notice darker spots on the bottom left and right corners of the screen? Specifically over the Start button and the clock. Make sure there is a lighter screen in the background to notice it more distinctly. This is my second Samsung screen with this issue. Does LG make a WUXGA LCD?
Also, have any of you had the rubber bumpers for the LCD on the palm rest come off. My left one came off and will not stay on. What happens is you tend to run your hand over it while typing, causing it to snap off. In order to get a new rubber piece, DELL needed to send me a whole new palm rest with speakers and fingerprint reader included to install.
So far I like this Notebook, however it should have went through more tests (drivers especially) before releasing it to the public.
Dell only offer the 1080p (WUXGA+) screen(s) in the country I am in. I am planning to get the 15.6'' one. the high
I think I will have to find a place where I can have a look on a notebook with that screen, and see if I can handle it. Right now I am very sceptical. I just can't believe that Dell do not offer the 720p screen when I am finally ready to take the plunge.
Is there anyone here that can actually use WUXGA+ on 15.6-16'' without having to resort to changing DPI, font size or zooming?
A friends 1520 inspiron screen is really dark. Tried changing inverter card to lcd but still dark. tried replacing video card still dark. someone suggested checking voltage from motherboard. Can you tell me where to check output ? External monitor works fine..
Model number of the original 1366 x 768 screen for this laptop? My screen is dark in one corner and I need to know the model number in order to order the correct one to replace for this laptop.
I put my 2-month old xps12 to sleep, now I cant wake it up, The screen is dark, and I tried pressing every key, it still wont wake up. There is no key to force shut either.
discussion on the RGB WUXGA screen but nothing definitive. This display is the main reason I am interested in the M4400 over the W500. Can anyone comment on the quality of this display? Is it bright, good contrast, ect? Also, the Dell online site says it is a "TRUELIFE" which I believe means it is a glossy screen. Do they offer a non glossy screen over the phone?
My other questions are a bit more minor:
Does this laptop use the Centrino 2 G45 chipset? I ask because the Dell's don't have DDR3 memory which I thought was a requirement for Centrino 2 chipsets?
What is the size of the HDD slot? The Dell configurator allows for 2 HDD's. Does this mean there are 2 HDD slots or is it using the DVD slot for the 2nd HDD?
Does this laptop do well with SDD's? Specifically Intel's speedy SSD's? I know the Lenovo's cannot use the full speed of the SSD because Lenovo slowed down the SATA port for battery life.
Is the keyboard and trackpoint good quality? I know Dell consumer laptops have horrible keyboards. Does this compare well to Lenovo keyboards?
How is the overall build quality? I know it is a magnesium structure. I am mostly concerned with how stiff the screen is? I hate screens that wobble around.
Is there anything else I should know about this laptop?
This is what I am looking at:
Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4Ghz / 1066Mhz FSB / 3MB L2) Windows Vista Basic 1GB DDR2-800 (2x1GB) Internal Backlit Keyboard Nvidia QuadroFX 770M 512MB 80GB 5400RPM HDD 15.4" UltraSharp WUXGA (1920x1200) RGB-LED TRUELIFE Display Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11a/g/n Draft Mini Card 6 Cell Battery 3 Year Basic Limited Warranty and 3 Year NBD On-Site Service

I will add my own memory and hard drive and upgrade the OS to Vista Ultimate using my schools free upgrade.
I moved my WUXGA 9300 screen to my new M90. It works okay and looks gorgeous, but it's 'off' position is solid white. Meaning when the screen turns 'off' it goes to solid white.
Anyone know why this is happening or what I could do?
I'm running the A08 Dell BIOS and I have a Quadro FX 1500m.
Does anyone know if this screen would be compatible with a Dell Studio 1737, even though mine just has the WXGA+ screen? Mine has been cracked and someone is selling one new on eBay for £86.99 which is a decent price
I have a Dell 4310 that I bought used without a hard drive. Â When I unboxed and initially tested it with another drive it booted into Windows 7, but, did not load because it wasn't the right drive.
The computer sat next to my chair for a few days until I got the new SSD drive that I wanted to install. Â When I put the drive in and plugged the system in (no battery yet) the battery light on the upper left flashed briefly and the power button came on and stayed that way for about twenty seconds. The screen remained black and the battery light and power button turned off.
This morning my son mentioned that he "might' have spilled a little bit of something on it. Â I quickly took it apart and carefully dried the pieces and parts on the heating vent and put it back together and the same thing happened.
I have tried the following:
1) Re seat RAM
2) verified video is connected
3) unplugged, held the power button for fifteen seconds and plugged the power cord back in.
What could I be looking at here, a new Motherboard?
Just got the 1920 x 1080 version of the 13" inspiron. The left and right edges (about 5-10% and not top or bottom) of the screen are about half as bright as the rest of screen. Also on closer inspection I've noticed that on the left hand side, the middle part of the rubber edge is squashed in. Is this pretty much normal for these laptops? I'll see if my camera can capture these details.
What do you use to clean your screens with? I have grubby little fingerprints ALL over mine, and it is especially annoying on black screens in movies/games and such.
I almost bought a pack of normal "LCD Cleaning Wipes" but then I noticed it had Alcohol in it and shyed away from it. Why? I'm assuming that Alcohol would hurt the sensitive gloss finish on the screen, but my assumption could be wrong (and hopefully it is, would be much simpler to use those wipes). I also tried just using a dry wash cloth and just gently rubbing the prints off, but it only smeared them, and I'm afraid I'll damage the screen if I push any harder than I already am. Using a wet wash cloth seemed to have no effect either.
So how about it? What method do YOU use, and find best, to clean your screens?
One of the main reasons I chose to go with the dell was:
A. I had the option of having a very high resolution screen 1900 x 1200 (wuxga)
B. I got a good deal on a 4 year accidental damage warranty w/ the package.
--
I was so excited about getting a 1900 x 1200 screen; it would allow me to be as productive as on my desktop since I work with many windows open. I also play a little with video editing.
As soon as I received it I tested out the notebook for several hours.
The first thing I noticed was that white and light colors are shimmery / grainy. I have never seen this on any other screen that I work on.
After several hours I found myself feeling a little nauseous. In addition, my eyes felt strained.
I have never experience this in my life as I sit in front of computers 8-10 hours a day for the past 20 years (Work).
I raised the DPI of the fonts in vista to make them a normal size, so I don't feel that the size of the letters caused this feeling.
The next day, I decided to try again. This time I set the screen to 1440 x 900. I still experienced the same effect. I think the shimmery / graininess of the screen is causing this, as it causes the text to blend in with the background to a degree.
I tried using the notebook throughout the week. I tried getting used to it, and I did somewhat, but still felt uncomfortable working on it for an extended period of time (after only 2 hours).
I then called my sales rep. to see if he had heard of this problem. His only advice was that I should call customer support.
I called customer support, and got someone from the Philippines on the phone very quickly. The person was very nice, friendly, and wanted to help me. I was impressed. (They probably don’t want me to return it within 21 days).
He told me this is the nature of the wuxga screens. He was willing to send me another notebook to compare it with either a 1440x900 display or another wuxga.
I then did a bit of searching and found other people expressing dissatisfaction about the graininess (which is what I think is causing my fatigue) on the wuxga screens as well as other Samsung screens.
My question to everyone is:
Has anyone else experience this?
Do you think switching to the 1440 x 900 LED screen will resolve this issue?
Does the WUXGA 1900 x 1200 screen come in any other brands besides Samsung, eg. LG ?
I am really dreading on downgrading to 1440x900 as I love the real estate that the wuxga screen provides, but something is up with its quality.
I am trying to convince myself that I will get used to it but I really do not think this is the case..
Have Inspiron 3520 with W8 - daughter has infected it via Minecraft update. Original issue was dark screen and beeping, 8 at a time. Put on a external monitor and am going through the long process of digging out the bugs with anti-virus and malware removal programs.
Question is this - how can I stop the infernal beeping? It starts up if I insert the power cord or disconnect/connect the external monitor. Is there any way to silence it?
Have a Latitude E5420 and the screen suddenly turn dark. Still can see a bit but sometimes will return to the normal for while. Is this because of the parts has lose? Should change the monitor? Or related to the driver?
The screen has gone dark/dull on my laptop as though the backlight is faulty. I have plugged the laptop into another screen and this too does not work.
I just bought the HP Pavillion dv5- 1003nr from my brother-in-law. The video screen is too dark and I always have to brighten up by using the fn+f8 keys.
Is there any permanent settings once it is set how I wanted?
I kept brighten up the video screen whenever I use it.
I looked at the new MBP 17" today and was dissapointed in the screen quality compared to the 15". It was rather dark and hard to see, even more so when viewing a movie. brightness ws turned all the way up, the apple group had no idea, but agreeded.
just got off the phone with Apple .... seems like I might have a cursed NVIDIA graphics card... had basically kept my MBP ('07 model) in sleep mode when I went to office. When i came back, the white light in the front wasn't pulsing anymore and it was replaced by a bright constant white light - proceeded to open the lid... and the screen was totally dark ... tried a few key combinations in random to get it up and running but to no avail .. then checked a few forums on this issue... seems like lots of ppl have the issue but a lot of them also managed to get the screen back on by resetting the SMC and PRAM (which I proceeded to try) ... unfortunately hasn't worked for me despite multipe resets of the SMC and PRAM. Gave Apple a call and all things point to the graphics card having conked out ... this sucks big time! ...
The worst thing is that after switching on my machine, I can still load software by doing the keyboard shortcut for spotlight and typing the application ... e.g. itunes is working and I'm still managing to play songs through myh machine.. only issue is that the display is totally dark...
Now.. my big issue before I send it across to the service centre is backing up my "Downloads" folder....
how I can go about doing this through terminal ? I think I just might be able to pull it off with the keyboard if I get sufficient and specific help!!!! basically I'm looking for transfer of all contents from "Downloads" folder to an external hard disk with the name "Active" ...
T400 -  ONE                I have a problem with two T400 thinkpads. The first  T400 was dead when I bought it ( suspected graphics card ) . Well I managed to get this laptop to boot up. The screen was black but I found by chance that if shine a lamp or light on the screen it is working.  Now being able to see what I was dooing on the screen faintly. So I updated the bios & that did not fix the problem but I was well happy about finding out this trick. I then added 8Gb kingston ram which works with my other T400 laptops. I installed Win 7 ultimate.  The laptop is working fine. No issues  just extreamley dark screen almost black "but working"  Very strange indeed.  T400 - TWO     Now the second laptop was working fine. But I was swapping the parts with the non working laptop to determine the problem.  Now I have two T400 laptops with a dark almost black screen. But over about a month working on them I am making progress.  I am determind not to give up on these computers. This is not like fixing or repairing a computer. More like rezerecting a computer. I did not intend to spend so much time on these laptops but I have found a common problem that effects a lot of people. I would love to know why a  working laptop when re- assembled gives an almost black screen & still works. Normally I would just buy a new motherboard & bin the defekt one.  What I need is some command codes to try to make the screen brighter. Is this planned obsiletion or just a graphic defekt myth. Because after throwing away more supposidly dead motherboards with a graphic defekt  than I can count. I am starting to think that if I get the brightness back on my computers I will have sloved a major black screen problem. It is not the graphic processor. I have been playing fifa 14 with a lamp shining on the screen. It played fine, not jumpy ,no colour stripes just very dark.
I have a HP HDX 16 1160-US and a while back, my screen went all of a sudden dark but if I put my face very close to the screen, I could see the desktop icons and start button. I looked around on the internet for possible reasons that this happened. One of the solutions was to change the lcd inverter, therefore I changed it. Once i turned the laptop on with the new lcd inverter, the laptop displayed everything alright, but after I turned it off and on, the screen went dark again. I searched some more on the internet and found another solutuon and that was to change the backlight. To me it made sense to change it because thats where the whole lighting comes from, so I changed that too, but unfortunately that didn't work either. I didn't know what else I should do after this point so I called HP to see if I can give it to them to repair it but they don't have parts anymore for my laptop.Â
I'm pretty disappointed since the whole reason I bought this computer was for photo editing and the RGB Led screen was just perfect. But the Dell rep tells me that they are no longer offering that screen and that they will be sending me a 15.6 inch WLED.
They are still checking with the dispatch people to make sure that they aren't shipping the RGB Led, but I was wondering what my options were? I'm tempted to ask Dell to give me the Studio 17 instead, since it seems to be one of the last Dell computers to offer the RGB Led.
Screen on aspire E1-522 is dark but I can see desktop very faintly. do I need to change the back light or inverter and if so, are there any tutorials or videos around ....
I've been having problems with my Aspire 5336 laptop. The screen comes on for a few seconds then goes so dark can hardly see it. When its plugged into an external monitor it is ok but as soon as you unplugged it the laptop screen comes on for a few seconds then goes dark. Do you think it is a back light problem.
I'm trying to diagnose this model for a friend: Aspire 3100-1556
The screen is too dark to use. The brightness feature via the function key doesn't help. It does make an instantaneous brightness when pressing it, but it stays dark, doesn't hold more than a split second.
Windows XP IS loading; that much can be seen when looking hard enough. So this isn't an operating system issue. It's there, just can't see it well enough to use.
I have been told elsewhere that it could be the inverter, but as I am new to repairing laptops, I really need more info before asking my friend to spend money on one.
I've been waiting 4 weeks or my system exchange through 1 cancellation and and 20+ calls to get it straightened out, I finally found out mine is shipping today.
They actually gave me a pretty decked out 1737, but it only has a WXGA+... I had spoke with the tech that took my requirements and told him my only concerns were discrete video and wuxga screen.
He told me that most likely i would get a 1737 but they only had WXGA+ and I told him that not acceptable and he asked what about studio xps 16's 1080p display which I agreed to
