Dell Inspiron 9300 :: GPU Fan Not Running Properly
Jan 8, 2010
I am currently in possession of an Inspiron 9300, which was brought to me so I could try to fix it. The user complained that the computer will lock up and artifacts would appear on the screen. After investigating further, I discovered that the GPU fan never runs. I tried temporarily connecting it to the CPU fan pins, at which point the fan would spin: so it seems that the fan is not physically broken. Moreover, when I connected the GPU fan back to its own pins, I could get it to spin using third-party software: so it seems that it can be told to spin by at least the operating system.
Now, the question is: Why won't it spin on its own, even when the card begins to overheat? I've tried using the latest drivers and BIOS from the Dell website to no avail. I also tried to boot into Ubuntu Linux, and the same thing would occur, which suggests that the problem is more fundamental than the operating system. But what could it be? The sensors seem to accurately report the GPU's temperature. And the GPU, when cooled (using an external fan), seems to run without a problem. So whatever is supposed to tell the GPU fan to start spinning just isn't doing its job.

I totally wiped out my drive and started anew on my 9300. Most of my hardware drivers were accounted for. But, I'm missing sound, wireless, Fn+X keyboard shortcuts, and (most importantly) my ATI X300, which may as well not exist because Windows sure isn't recognizing it.
I haven't been able to get online with it yet, so I'm not sure how many of these problems I can clear up by searching with 7's troubleshooting tools.
Of course, ATI doesn't have official Vista drivers for the X300. Has anyone worked around Dell's OEM drivers, or have those been fine for you?
I really wanted to make it a nice cable/OTA HD Media Center, but I especially need my video card up and running for that.

I have an Inspiron 7010 which is 2 years old. In control panel devices it tells me to troubleshoot the laptop and cannot rectify problem with Broadcom virtual wireless adaptor. Secondly running the diagnostics say the Read test is not running. These are the only problems but are not affecting the efficiency of the PC. Should I ignore it?

Guide to Switching your Inspiron 9300/M170 WUXGA into the Inspiron 9400/M1710:
You can't simply replace the display screens. The instructions below must be followed for your screen to work properly.
Required Materials:
- Small Phillips (I used #0 Phillips)
- Either 2 monitors (9400 and 9300) or part #YPNL-N017B (Google the # to buy it).
Step 1: Remove the display assembly. Dell has an excellent guide for this on their website.
[url] Click on Display)
Step 2: Remove the LCD Bezel (the gray trim around the screen). This requires removing the screws under the circular pads. I used a small flathead to pry open the bezel.
Step 3: Remove the 8 screws around the sides of the LCD. This will make it so your screen can be taken out. Do not worry about any screws on the top, they are for other things.
Step 4: At the bottom of the screen, there is a green circuit board. On the left side, you will see a screw holding the wire down. Remove this.
Step 5: Remove the LCD screen from the case.
Step 6: Look at the bottom circuit board again. This is the board we need to swap! Disconnect the 2 connections on the board. There should be on on the bottom and one on the side that is white.
Step 7: There will be 3 silver screws holding the circuit to the screen. Remove these screws. Note: This requires a very small phillips. I used a #0 Phillips to do the trick.
Step 8: Repeat steps 1-7 for your other monitor OR if you don't have another monitor...you will need to buy an inverter chip. The mfg # is YPNL-N017B. If you google that number, you should find a bunch of sites willing to sell it.
Step 9: Simply swap the bottom circuit boards between monitors or insert the new one that you bought.
Step 10: Follow steps 1-7 in reverse to reconnect everything back up! Before screwing everything back up. I suggest you plug it in first to test it out.
Congratulations. Your WUXGA LCD will now work properly on the Inspiron 9400. For anyone wondering, you MUST replace the bottom circuit board or the brightness controls will not work. You brightness will be stuck at the lowest setting and nearly impossible to see.

BEEN a While and A long time...
I currently order a Pentium M 735 1.7 Ghz 400FSB to overclock up to 2.26Ghz@533Mhz. Still waiting on shipping. Anyways, I am looking forward about upgrade my GPU Go 6800 OCed 370Mhz/700Mhz to Go 7800 (NON-GTX).
Yeah, GTX one is pricey for me.
I am wondering does the Non GTX version of Go 7800 still need 130Watts Adapter?
I did a lot of search all I could find is people talks about 7800GTX version.
In my thought I think 6800 to 7800 different is more pipelines and pixel fill rates and etc and the power needed is the same. Right?
So do I need 130 watts or I just keep 90 watts adapter which is perfect for NON-GTX Go 7800

I'm looking to upgrade my 9300. I currently have the 1.6GHz 533FSB Pentium M and I'm looking to move to the 1.6GHz 400FSB pin modded to 2.13GHz.

So speedtstep is enabled in bios and it says its running at the minimum which is 800 mhz and it shows a maximum of 1.8 ghz. I am running A05 bios.
I have tried all the different power settings in windows and they do not change it. I try running a few games and programs and it still sits at 800 mhz. I think something is messed up and don't know how to fix it.
Anyone know what I can do to see if the speedstep is working correctly so Im actually using my cpu to its max when needed.

I put my Inspiron 9300 into hibernate this morning, tried to wake it back up and all I'm getting aftet the Dell logo and status bar (POST) is a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left corner.
When I hit the Play button on the front of the notebook, it brings up the Dell Media Direct logo screen, but nothing happens.
When I boot with my XP CD and go to the recovery console, I can see the hard drive and files, though I can't access most folders because I get an Access Denied message.
I tried booting from my flash drive, but when I do, the flash drive is recognized as the c: drive and the hard drive isn't listed.
I also tried unplugging my laptop and battery and held down the power button for a few minutes to discharge any electricity. No luck.

I have an Inspiron 9300 with an 80GB IDE hdd. I have recently succesfully upgraded the RAM to 2gb. Im now looking to upgrade the HDD and would like to go for the Western Digital WD3200BEVE (320GB). I know there is something about the need to partition it as XP only sees up to 130GB but I also read somewhere that if you download HD Tune and if the 48 bit address box is checked then it will see the whole drive. As Im a bit of a newbie to all this, does that mean I can just pop the 320gb drive in and my system will see it straight away or will I have to partition it with no partition larger than 130GB?
Also does anyone know if the WD3200BEVE is the best one to go for in terms of performance and storage size?

My Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop has Windows XP Pro with all three SP packs, 80GB Harddrive 1 GB RAM, NVIDIA Geeforce GO 6800, 3 Partitions of 7.3GB, 2.8GB and 2.86GB - all showing plenty of free memory- with a number of peripherals - printers,
USB attachments etc available through a small network.
I have been using, successfully, Acronis True Image version 11, but I am unable to instal the latest upgrade version, True Image 2009.
I first installed it OVER he earlier version (as Acronis recommend) and I've tried installing after a clean removal of version 11, and the results are frightening .....

Both the fans of my Inspiron 9300 make a lot of noise. Previously in order to reduce noise I tried to completely remove the fans and cleaned them with compressed air.
At that time I found it weird that they did not make much noise when they rotated (pretty fast) because of the compressed air. The fans keep making the same amount of noise.
I notice that if I apply some pressue next to the keyboard where the fans are located the noise emitted changes.

Been looking at newegg lately and RAM is crraaazy cheap. I've been meaning to upgrade my RAM to 2 GB.
Currently I have a:
Inspiron 9300
1.83 ghz processor
1 GB RAM
256 mb GO geforce graphics card
Windows XP
I play games quite frequently so the RAM would be great. However, I've never upgraded my memory or computer as a matter of fact before.
My question is, how much RAM will my computer support. Should I opt to go for a 2 GB (2x1 GB), 4 GB (2x2GB), or 2 GB of 1 stick of RAM and keep 512 mb of my Dell RAM to try and get 2.5 gb of RAM? Is the last option feasible?

the nVidia 6800Go (Dell part 0W5373, I guess) video card on my Inspiron 9300 has stopped working properly.
I've ran Dell Diagnostics and it reported an error code "5300: 0119", which suggests that the video memory is damaged.
Now I'm wondering whether I can put an ATI X300 (Dell part 0W5379) found on ebay in place of my fried video card.
The X300 is much cheaper than the 6800Go and I'm not interested in performance at the moment, I just want to fix my laptop.
Would that be compatible?
In the end that ATI card has been extracted from another Inspiron 9300...

I'm using a Pentium M (730) 1.6 GHz processor. For the moment instead of buying a new laptop I'm interested in upgrading the processor.
The Bios shows that it can detect and appears to be able to use a dual core processor but none of the 9300's were ever sold that way.
The motherboard uses a m-FCPGA socket. Does anyone know or has tried to use a dual core processor in this motherboard? I'm even curious as a project but,
if someone has info/data on this I would truly appreciate the info. I have a 250 GHz harddrive and 2GHz on the RAM. Looking to speed this thing up a bit before finally putting her out to pasture.

I have an inspiron 9300 and a precision m90. my m90 has the t7200 and is vastly superior to the now aging 9300. the chasis are very similar and the mobos look exactly the same, dimension wise, minus one minor detail, the rear usb ports are farther apart on the m90 mobo, not by much but just enough to be irksome and cast doubt.
has anyone tried to upgrade the 9300 mobo and have they tried it with the m90 mobo? I can live w/o that pair of usb ports next to quadrupling the performance.
ulimately, I am trying to save the great monitor and in great condition 9300 chasis and upgrade the mobo/processor/ram.
what have you tried, learned, and/or recommend to get the 9300 upgraded to close to or better than the m90 with t7200?

I've been looking everywhere for an answer to this question and can't find it. I have an Inspiron 9300 (old.. I know), and it still works great for everything I need it to do, except one thing. I have no storage space at all.
I've been looking at throwing in a new HD, preferably as large as possible.
The only problem is all the conflicting things I hear about these systems.
First off, I know that mine is an ATA model, not SATA. I'm definitely looking for storage space above all else. So whats the biggest drive this laptop will support? I've been looking at this one (Western Digital 250 GB 5400 RPM), but I've heard things about the bios only allowing hard drives up to a certain size.

Anyone know why this is happening or what I could do?
I'm running the A08 Dell BIOS and I have a Quadro FX 1500m.

I updated the graphics card for my Inspiron 9300.. Lots of money, and lots of time wasted, and now I'm having huge issues with my laptop. First off, I ended up buying two Dell AC adapters (both rev02) and with both I get an incompatibility error when I start my laptop.. Now, I get around this by unplugging the AC and pluging it back when I'm inside windows... good enough
Well, now I have another problem. In windows, if I were to even drag a window and pan it around, I would lose my display .. I would get these diagonal patterns covering my screen. and then after a few seconds the screen turns pitch black.. I've tried different things and everytime I seem to get the same result.
The drivers that I'm using for the 7800 is the ones recommended here for the initial installation of the card.. I've also tried others but to no avail.
I've flashed my bios more than twice but the same result.
I've even bought a new 9 cell battery even though I already had one to begin with(but it was functionally weird)
7800 card: [url]
My spec:
inspiron 9300
pentium 2.13(something like that)
2gigs of ram
initial graphics card was geforce 6800

I have a Inspiron 9300 notebook and when I push the power button the system will show 3 lights (caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock) then shuts off in 2-3 seconds. I did notice the scroll lock stays lit just a little longer.
I have removed all components including battery and running straight from power adaptor (which is good) and still same issue. There are no beep codes for missing memory. I walked through Dell's online process but it did not really indicate what the issue was .....

During reassembling my Inspiron 9300 (to upgrade the cpu) I did something wrong and now the laptop refuses to turn on. Instead of normal booting when I get the "power on" pressed the power led starts blinking frequently (2.5 blinks a second). Nothing more happens (fans, hard dirive, etc. don't start).
I tried turing it on with adapter, with battery or with both - the same result. I tried reassembling it again with the previous CPU - the same result. I tried swapping memory modules but it didn't help either.

Surely someone has managed to replace the motherboard, bus, bios, and processor, etc., to use the laptop body, screen (new, replaced 1920x1200), power supply/baterry and video card, etc.) !
Seems like with a little extra soldering work it should be possible to recycle the big parts of the 9300

My initial thoughts were that I had a battery issue the Ion battery. So I went to dell and purchased a new battery 2 weeks ago. Plugged that guy in and my theory was a bust.
Next, I turned to the ac adapter and decided it must be the problem. Back to dell to drop some more $$$ - just arrived and...well, let's just say I wouldn't be writing to this post if that solved my problem. I have surfed through various other posting will no avail.
The laptop can run fine on just the ac power - just no juice is getting to the battery to recharge it. I went into the BIOS set-up and it stated that it did not recognize the ac adapter -
can't figure why that may be the case, but none of the less I've got nothing but Dell products here - no knock-offs. Any suggestions or theories? I just can't believe I could have a bad motherboard here - the laptop works great otherwise.
