Dell :: M1210 Should I Make The Vista Switch
Jul 28, 2007
I purchased my M1210 in late December and got it configured so that I could switch to Vista if I wanted. I got MCE on it and I think the configs for Vista. Here's my dilemma: I don't whether to switch to Vista or not. I got the free upgrade CD that Dell sent me. I have read, though, some really bad reviews of Vista. Is that b/c some systems don't have the right configs? Should I switch? I'm heading off to college in less than a month. What should I do? The college recommends either Windows XP Prof. or Windows Vista Ultimate (oh yea, why ultimate? isn't that overdoing it? i thought at first it was but then the dell college website also recommends ultimate. why is that?). Would my system be ready for ultimate? The upgrade I got is for Home Premium. They recommend I get ultimate but, unless there's something I'm not seeing, I think Home Premium will suffice. But should I switch or stay with XP? If you do think I should switch, is there some guide online somewhere that can guide me through it (ie. which drivers to backup, etc.)
Here are my specs:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2GHz/667MHz/4MB), 2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm, 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 TurboCache, 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive XPS 1210
One more thing (sorry for the long post): what do you think about securing my 1210? Should I use an actual lock or would software like LoJack be enough?

I am restoring a donated XPS M1210. It will not turn on with power switch, when plugged in to power adapter, with battery installed. If I unplug power supply and plug it back in, the laptop turns on by itself. I replaced the power switch board, assuming the board was shorted out, but it did not change the situation. I can turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button until it shuts down.
I have performed a clean install and checked bios but find no settings that could affect this.

how to make optical drive to be revealed on eject key press if it was turned off according to a powersaving scheme? This issue relates only to Sony Z after Vista clean installation (by this manual: Sony Z series 32bit Vista Clean Install Guide (full functions & no windows activation)). When I had "factory installed" Vista, it worked this way. But after I have reinstalled OS, DVD drive doesn't want to wake up without restart.

I have the Acer Aspire 6935G and it came with Vista, which I hate. I want to switch to XP Home but I can't locate the various drivers apart from on sites which claim to offer 'free drivers' but then ask for fees. Has anyone experience of siwtiching from Vista to XP on this machine please, or can anyone point me to a reliable source of drivers?

I have a Dell XPS m1210. I am thinking about an SSD harddrive. Win XP is a must. I am looking at the gskill titans on newegg.
I am currently running with the 60GB stick drive. What I would like to do is ghost it over and just benefit from SSD speed.
Is this possible? Are SSDs even compatible with the m1210? I know they change the HD specs every few months or so (IDE, SATA, SATA-2, etc

So I got my Dell XPS M1210 way back at the start of 2007. It served me faithfully up until last week when it died. Basically when I turn it on I can hear the hard drive spinning up and the power light comes on but nothing else, not even the hard drive access light. I'm pretty certain either the motherboard or CPU(or both) are fried. I can see that the CPU fan is not spinning when I turn the laptop on. I disassembled the laptop and gave it a good cleaning, something I probably should of done long ago. The exhaust hole for the CPU fan was nearly totally clogged with dust which is the reason why I think something is fried (Also the temps had been a lot higher than normal the last few weeks). Anyway some questions you guys might be able to help with:
- Should I bother replacing the motherboard or would it just make more sense financially to get a new netbook of some sort?
- Any other suggestions on what I can try to fix the problem?
- Is there anything of practical use I can salvage from my m1210 besides the hard drive?

I have been using my Dell XPS M1210 for 2.5 years now. It has been a great laptop, only big issue has been a dying battery which is something that has occurred to most close friends that own the same model. Recently, my laptop shut down on its own. After this occurred, it wouldn't start up again. When I hit the power button, no sound comes out of the computer. There is no noticeable hard drive spin, fan noise or anything. The screen does not flicker or show any sign of life. The power LED shines for 5 seconds and then goes down.
I tried FN+Power button to no success. Also, if I leave the power button pushed down, the power LED flashes after 5 seconds and continues to stay on until the next 5 seconds doing a cycle that only ends once I stop pushing the button. I tested my battery on another XPS M1210 and it worked well. Also, I tested another battery on my XPS and it did the same thing.
I am currently out of warranty. I don't know what to do to test the failing component. Since I don't know what the specific problem could be, I don't know how much a repair could end up being.

My XPS M1210 laptop is dead right now. It happened last friday morning when I am trying to turn on the laptop. After I press the power button, the hard drive sounds spinning, but after a second, it remains silent (Same for the cd-rom). Only the power led is on.
All other leds are dead, not even the bluetooth, cap led, number lock led. So I connected my laptop to a external monitor, but nothing is showed. I have inserted a boot disk, but it doesn't work. I also tried to press Fn and power button method, but it still doesn't work as well.
Right now, I am suspecting my hard drive is broken or some virus infected my laptop because a day before my laptop is still working, my laptop got infected with some virus.
When I opened my inbox, my laptop suddenly got out of control. The cursor jumped around the screen and there was some bar code surrounded the cursor. But after I restarted my comp and did some virus scan, nothing was found. However, the next day, I turned on my laptop, the screen/images were all messed up. The images were chopped into piece. But in safemode, things are looking perfect. So I shutted it down and planned to reformat the laptop. AFter that, I am not able to turn it on again.

I wanna get rid of my inspiron 9100 and carry around something smaller. I've currently got the mr9800 video card and do some low detail gaming (mostly old games...BFV, BF1942 demo, WoW). I do need to use it for Second Life as part of my job. I also do presentations and stuff for work.
The cost/benefit ratio of lugging this thing around in comparison to its performance is waning. I've been thinking of forgetting the whole desktop replacement thing and take a cut in gaming performance for portability. The portable computers are getting to a point that even with low end graphics card they are comparable to my 9100 with the mr9800 (almost).
I've been looking at the m1210 with keen interest...it's pretty compact and cool. But, I've read the extensive thread about complaints related to the screen. If I went with the m1210 I'd be getting the AV package in hopse of the AUO screen which is supposed to be marginally better.
I've also been looking at the m1330 because of the LCD screen...it's a little bigger, but lighter. It's also about a thousand dollars more expensive (decked out with a decent screen, video card, blue tooth, etc.).
When all is said and done I'm looking at nearly identical specs, except for the LCD screen, the fingerprint doohickey, and the new dx10 capable video card. And, like I said, the m1330 is bigger, but lighter. In your opinion, is it worth it? Bear in mind that if I went with the m1330 I'd have to wait until there was some sort of coupon/sale or it turns up in the outlet...cause I can't drop 2,000 on it. I'm looking at 1200 tops. The m1210 is available decked out for 1100 (including tax). I'm just a little nervouse about the LCD problems...and the older technology.

Has anyone had a GPU problem fixed more that one year out of warranty?
During my 1 year warranty the motherboard and CPU were replaced twice. My warranty ended in 2008
and my computer suffered from a GPU problem in 2009. After arguing with customer service for a while, Dell fixed my computer outside of warranty as a 1 time exception.

Has been soo long since I post anything on this great forum! I appreciate everyone's time here, and thank you all for taking some time to help me diagnose this problem. Anyways here is the problem:
I bought a "broken" Dell M1210 from ebay. The cosmetics of the laptop looks very good: no dents, few scratch marks, and almost no blemishes. It did not came with a hard drive, only an AC adapter.
Currently, I am trying to transfer ownership to me and will be trying to buy warranty for my m1210 once the transfer is complete. My m1210 is a little more then 1 month out of warranty coverage period.
I have completely disassemble the laptop and examine the motherboard, it looks and smells new. Internally, everything is very, very clean. The motherboard model of mine is HN110, the one that has the geforce 7400gs in it.
However, the batter is bad because it holds no power. I have tried on my friend's m1210 and checked it through Dell utilities and it gave a thumbs down.
I cannot confirm if the LCD, speaker, sound card, processor, system fan, heatsink, and camera are fine, or not.
I am able to confirm the ram, wireless card, and the CD drive are perfectly functional. I have yet to test those under performance conditions.
The main problems is:
I am unable to turn on the laptop.
I have tried 5 different adapters: 2 Dell m1210, 1 E1705, 1 E1505, and 1 Targus universal adapter. All of them do not work on the laptop.
When I plugged a Dell adapter into my m1210, the AC adapter shuts off. The green light on the Dell AC Adapter shuts off.
I tried my friend's charged battery to power up my laptop;however, my m1210 still will not power on.
I have not find a way to test the circuit board on my m1210 and my friend is very, very wary of me opening up their laptop. So anything that involves me trying different parts on his laptop will be almost impossible for me to ask for, he is a noob.

I've just inherited my brother's M1210 with Vista Business pre-installed. I was interested in doing a clean install of Windows XP instead. I've done a search on this forum and elsewhere and I'm a little confused.
1. Can I just use an XP install disc I already have for a computer I no longer use?
2. Is there another option other than using my own copy of XP?
3. Do I need to do anything else other than install the XP drivers from the Dell website after installing XP?

What I want to do now is modify the screen case and fit a webcam. My problem is that I've taken the entire thing apart, looked at the motherboard and the back of the screen and I cannot find there the webcam plug is for the stock camera.
Does anyone have any idea? The Dell disasembly guide shows a short ribbon like cable going off to the right, but I find no port for it nor does the guide give more detail.

There are dark grey marks on both side of the palm rest on my M1210 palm rest which doesn't come off no matter what i use on it. There were never there until i cleaned my laptop with some iso-propyl alcohol. I wiped the whole laptop and around the two palm rest area, silver stuff were coming off my laptop and transferring into onto my cloth.
The place where the silver things come off became a big dark spot on my laptop.

I know I am late to the party, but I finally replaced Core Duo
t2400 in my m1210 with Core2 Duo t7200. Why t7200 and not t7400 or t7600? Price/Performance.
I got t7200 on ebay for about $75, and hope to sell my t2400 for...whatever. So the price for this upgrade should be minimal. Plus t7400 or t7600 would run hotter. Giving my crazy existing temps it was a concern .....

I am preparing to help my cousin (via phone) reinstall XP on his ebay purchased XPS M1210 laptop.
I notice that in the system config information, that the HDD is SATA, but when looking at the driver download page, I see no SATA drivers listed.
How are we to install XP without SATA drivers to slipstream or use the F6 disk?
Do i get the drivers fron Intel? Do I change a setting in the BIOS for "ATA" or "legacy" mode? If i do this,
then where do i get the driver to install within XP so i can switch it back when the installation is complete
