Dell :: M1730 Hard Drive
Feb 13, 2009
What hard drive does the M1730 come with stock? Also is it SATA or PATA?
I was wondering if I should get in on this deal to anticipate getting a M1730 someday, or if the M1730 drive is the same/better.

I'm fed up deleting stuff all the time and I want to also run a proper dual boot configuration with Vista and XP (Because I've heard from you all that XP = the win for SLI and stuttering issues.)
My options are to either run single hard drive mode or RAID 0. Obviously RAID 0 means the same size hard drives, but if i went single hard drive mode i could get the
320 gb WD 7200 RPM 16mb CACHE (use as main drive for vista)
AND
500gb WD 5400 RPM 8mb CACHE (use as XP drive and storage)
OR i could get 500gb x2 for RAID 0 and partition it with an XP partition on the D: drive.
I think 320x2 is not enough, if I'm upgrading I should go for at least 800gb.
My question for you guys, is do you think single mode performance of a 7200 RPM 16mb cache drive will be enough, and barely noticable than 5400 RPM 500GB discs in RAID0?

I need help deciding which HD drives to order on my new m1730.
7,200 200 gB vs 5,400 320 gB drives?
I have seen the thread on 7,200 vs 5,400 HD drives already. Does anyone know which brands/models Dell is shipping with new m1730's?
According to a sales rep who checked with technical support Dell is not using the Samsung spinpoint 320 gB hard disk drive.

Something recently happened to my laptop, and now whenever I boot up my laptop, I get a message stating that "No drive detected", and I don't know if the hard drive might be damaged or not.
I tried connecting the hard drive directly to a desktop pc since it's a sata hard drive, but my desktop pc just froze on the boot screen whenever this hard drive was connected.
I also was going to try and use a hard drive external case to maybe connect it to the pc this way, but I wasn't sure if it would work

I'm thinking of removing my DVD drive and replacing it with a caddy and hard drive as explained here.
I don't use the DVD drive very often and would much prefer a 500GB or 1TB hard drive in there. The DVD drive can then be used externally via the eSATA port using this cable.
The ideal solution would be to use this NewmodeUS caddy as it supports the larger 12.7mm 1TB 2.5" hard drives and has a removable faceplate. The problem is the price.
At $55 including postage to the UK plus customs, VAT and clearance fees on top it's going to work out pretty expensive for what is essentially a slimline SATA to SATA extension

I hate for this to be my first post, but after looking everywhere on the internet and on this site (I've been lurking a while) I'm still at the same place I started with my Studio 15 laptop. I'll try to include as much detail as possible.
I had my laptop plugged into my LCD tv via an HDMI cable as I often do, and when I went to close the laptop to use just the LCD, the tv flashed, showed a blue screen of death for a quick second and then went black. I opened the laptop and it was still on, but the screen wouldn't go on.
I restarted my computer and from there on out it kept making a beeping noise and stalling for a really long time at the "Dell Studio/progress bar" screen. After leaving it at that screen for a while the clicking stop and then it allowed me to access the Boot Options and Setup. Under setup, when I click on the drive under SATA hard drive, it shows something like 10GB and nothing more, and I have no options on the screen .....

I am having a problem with this beast. I was playing MW2 and suddenly, the laptop stopped responding. The whole thing was just frozen. Nothing I could do but press the power button to turn it off.
After that, I turn it on and got the message: "internal hard disk not found To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive No bootable devices-- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics."
I was thinking about "reseating" the hard drive but do not dare to do so. What could it happen if the laptop just sat on the table all the time. Under it is a cooler. I did not even touch the keyboard ( I use a wireless one). Any idea how to fix it.

HP Pavilion Dv5-2077cl Entertainment NotebookProduct #: WQ799UA#ABAWindows 7 64-bit
I have been getting a random blue screen popping up every once and a while, that will "dump my physical memory" or something and then reboot itself after like 30 seconds. my hard drive was the reason for these constant errors. So I backed everything up, in preparation of a real crash. I am in the process of ordering a new hard drive from Newegg.com, and I would like to know if it is hard to replace a hard drive in a notebook, or if I should have Geek Squad do it for $50. Also, I dont think I have the Operating system disc that came with my computer, so how do I order that from HP and how much is it?And last but not least, Is there a post or video with instructions on how to install a hard drive and the operating system?

What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.

Laptop is an Acer Aspire 1640. 2.26GHz, 2gb RAM.
Laptop was working fine with the factory Hitachi HTS541680J9AT00 80gb drive.
I purchased a Samsung HM160HC 160gb drive as it's supposed to be the fastest PATA laptop drive available.
I put it in and the laptop just kept saying "no operating system found" with the XP disk in the drive.
I tried several optical drives and got the same issue with all of them.
I then hooked a USB optical drive up and it wouldn't boot from it.
I removed the internal optical drive and the system then booted from the USB drive and loaded Windows fine.
I just assumed it was a fluke and once Windows was done loading I removed the USB drive, installed the factory internal optical again and turned it on...
"No operating system found".
This is where I'm stuck. If I remove the optical the system boots into Windows fine. There were no issues like this with the other hard drive.
I have tried setting the hard drive as Master, Slave, and Cable Select with no change.
Laptop has the newest BIOS.
Samsung does not offer firmware updates on their hard drives.

I'm curious if it's possible to actually order the BD-RE drive from dell directly?
I see some after-market vendors of course, but curious as to if it's actually directly orderable through Dell? And well, how to go about it, since I'm blind as a bat if it's actually on the website .

I am wondering if the XPS m1730 is capable of booting from a USB drive. I have been unable to do so using BIOS A09.Here is what I have tried so far:- Changed the BIOS options so boot from USB Storage Device is enabled in the boot sequence.- External USB ports are enabled on the BIOS.- Disabled the Admin password on the BIOS.- Power cycled the system and booted inserting the USB drive into each and every USB port on the laptop.- Pressing F12 at boot does not show a boot to USB option like on other Dell systems.- Tested the USB drive on several other systems and I can successfully boot to the USB drive.
System specs: XPS m1730, Processor T9300 @ 2.5 GHz, 4GB RAM, Vista Ultimate x32, RAID 200 GB, Dual GeForce 8800M GTX

who opened I believe Z and connected a hard drive to dvd drive connector while leaving dvd drive in for cosmetic reasons. Can't find this thread. Where exactly can the hard drive go? Inside the tray?
I am afraid there will be too much vibration if I put regular HD there. For this reason I would rather put there SSD but is there a way to make this a primary OS drive? Seems like last bios allows to boot from optical drive.

This is a weird one, my new M1730 has RAID 0 2x160GB but they are different makes of hard drive:
Hard Drive Member 1: Hitachi HTS722016K9A300
Hard Drive Member 2: FUJITSU MHW2160BJ G2
If you are an M1730 owner I would be interested in what drives you have. Dell have tried to fob me off and told me all M1730 have this config.
Although it works OK I can't see that this is good practice - I would have expected matched drives.

I own a Dell XPS M1730, that is our of warranty.
Recently, my CD Drive failed to read CD's. So, I removed the drive and took the model number off of it and searched the internet for a new drive (since Dell does not sell them). I bought it, received it and installed. It turns on, opens up and the light is on.
Now, I want to reformat my computer but the system is not reading the drive even though it appears to be on. It does not show up in Device Manager, and when I go to the Boot Menu it tells my that it cannot read the device in the modular drive. Yes, the module drive is enabled in Bios.
Is there anything I can do to remedy this or am I forced to send my laptop back to Dell again for repairs (Because that is getting old, and if that is the case then it just going to become a brick to me).

I am thinking about getting a new DV4T and then upgrading the hard drive to an X-25 ssd, but obviously it'll only be 80GB which is an issue. I just read the NBR review of the DV4 and it seems that there is a special hard drive you can plug in into the optical drive bay to boost your storage space... i've been searching everywhere but I can't find the thing... anyone know where/if this thing does in fact exist and if it's compatible with the "new" DV4s?

I recently replaced the SATA hard drive on my new Inspiron 1525 under warranty. Now Dell wants me to return the old drive, which I'd gladly do except for the fact that there is sensitive financial and password info on the drive.
I am not able to access the info by mounting the old drive as an axillary drive and therefore cannot overwrite the data on the drive.
The drive is currently sandwiched between two large magnets in hopes of scrambling the data, however, I cannot send the drive in without knowing for certain that the data is inaccessible

I haven't posted in quite a while. Recently my Vostro 1700 has been making some clicking noises that really sound like hard drive clicking.
I hear them once or twice every hour, although the computer's performance remains perfectly normal. At first I thought it was an OS issue but I downgraded to XP and then upgraded back up to Vista and the clicking sound remains.
Could this really be hard drive clicking? The computer is just over a year old (Dec. 2007) and has the 250GB 5400RPM hard drive.

Currently I have a 60gb 7200 drive and I'm constantly battling for disk space and I regularly have to move files off on to my desktop to reserve space. The last straw was just last week I wanted to install all of the Orange Box and well that's like half my hard drive. I had to remove my entire mp3 and photo collection and uninstall a ton of crap to find room for it.
Anyway, I'd like to get a bigger hard drive. 100+ gig minimum. I'd like to stay with a 7200 rpm drive but it seems from some threads around here that you can get virtually the same performance from the larger 5400 drives. If that's the case, I don't really care which speed it is.
Is there a certain formfactor for the drive I'm looking for? Certain brands? Anyone who's upgraded the harddrive in this system have any advice? Most of the threads I found regarding new harddrives are on the newer Dell systems; and mine is a few years old.
I suppose an external drive is always an option; but like another post here it'd have to be usb powered as I need it to be fully portable and carrying another power cord around just isn't gonna work. I've never had any experience with external drives however; though I imagine they work identical to an internal for all normal purposes. How about speed though? Are they feasable to run games off of or can you pretty much only use them for file storage?
It seems ideally I'd minimum want to upgrade my internal drive with 100+gig drive and then possibly also get an external drive later. So knowing that what should I be looking for for an internal drive upgrade. Can anyone give me any models or links to good ones or where I should be looking?

I just got my M1530 a couple of days ago and I have a few concerns and I wondered if you would be kind enough to comment on.
This is my spec:
XPS M1530 CORE 2 DUO T9300 2.50GHz,800,6MDisplay 15.4" UltraSharp Widescreen WSXGA+ (1680x1050) TFT with TrueLifeMemory Dual Channel 4.0GB (2x2048) 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAMHard Drive: 320GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM)8xDVD+/-RW Slim Slot-Load Drive,
including SWBattery XPS Primary 6-cell 56WHr Li-IonGraphics Card 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GTIntegrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio
Firstly, I notice that my hard drive (I assume the hard drive is located on the left palmrest side) always appears to be spinning loudly enough for me to notice. Is this normal? It also makes weird clicky noises intermittently and I have no idea why.
The CPU fan seems to be on an awful lot. I have a Gateway MT6821 and the fan only comes on under heavy load, with the dell it's on almost all the time.
Finally, build quality - I have noticed that the trim that sits around the LCD panel is about 2-3mm away from the screen on the left side. Is this acceptable or should I return and ask for a replacement laptop?

i am going to get a 8gb one, but i don't know if it would be too small..
i read the review, you can upgrade the ssd harddrive to a larger one in the future, anyone know how big does it support? and how to installed xp on there?

my seagate freeagent desktop 500 gb external hard drive decided to go tits up on me today. i know it isnt a dell specific question, but i fine the dell owners are generally the smartest people
anyways, all my pictures are on there... ya, i know i should have back ups, and believe me i am kicking myself right now, and i actually did back it up, and thought i was ok, but i guess i formatted that drive a bit ago and forgot to replace the backed up stuff.
it was making a faint clicking sound and wasn't seen by my laptop at all, so i began doing research and found out the light sometimes does something so disconnecting it most likely would fix it. i took it apart and disconnected the light, no joy... so i took it completely apart and plugged it directly into my desktop, and it made that faint clicking sound... so, now i assume the actual drive is really bad, but i have never had a hd fail on me so completely, so who knows?
