My laptop is being delivered tommorow and i only ordered the 6 cell because there is no 9 cell available in canada yet
And was wondering if the 1640 and 1330 use the same battery so i have two batteries just in case
I know that everyone has different configurations and such, so while that does have an impact, I still want to know what is the general ballpark battery life you guys are getting. From what I am seeing, 2 hours is the average for the 6 cell, whereas the 9 cell is only 3?
I ask because as strange as it sounds, using BatteryBar indicates that the 6 cell that came with my 1640 has a capacity of only 5100mWh! That sounds very strange, because I know that on my XPS m1530, the 9 cell had a capacity of nearly 86,000mWh. I am having a 9 cell sent to me for my XPS 1640, and hopefully that will fix things. Maybe the battery's circuit board is reporting the numbers wrong/shrug.
I'm getting a new laptop soon, which one should I get ?? Does the DDR2 ram make any differences to DDR3?
View 10 Replies View Relatedim new here just wanna ask about my new xps studio laptop..
i bought it with a 64bit vista OS, the problem is i cant install a cad software because its for 32bit..can i install my laptop with a 32 bit OS? would it be no problem regarding my drivers?
Suppose I purchase one today at full retail price. Then, in say a week, there's a 20% (or whatever) coupon that comes out, or they go on sale.
Can I call Dell and ask for the difference? I know they have a 21 (or whatever) day return policy, so I would imagine the sale or coupon would have to come within that time frame.
Another question: Does the return policy time begin when I order or when it ships or when I receive it? .
Anyone know how to enable scrolling on the XP3 1330 touchpad? I just got Vista reinstalled on mine and I cannot find where to enable this
View 15 Replies View RelatedAs this is a dell section convince me to get a Dell studio xps 1640 over a Unibody Macbook or Macbook Pro.
What I like about the MB/MBP is the solid aluminum chassis. Anyways what makes the Dell better then the MB/MBP
Just had my connection upgraded to 50Mb & when i connect my xps to it wirelessly i can only reach speeds of 20Mb.
I have a usb Wireless N external addaptor which gets me speeds of between 35 and 42Mb but its massive and quite unsightly.
Is it possible for me to install a wireless N adaptor to replace the one in this laptop or would i have to get a smart card slot deal?
I'm often study and working with Visual Studio, Photoshop, Sql Server Datamining, Web, HD movie and some game..........................
View 10 Replies View RelatedHey everyone one..i know there has been a some chatter here and there about overclock with the sxps 1640. Most in fact want to down clock to fix heating issues lol. Well i have my xps running pretty well and heat is not a factor anymore. athough im still not too happy about how much i spent..just making this laptop reasonable. anyways has anyone ventured with setfsb or anything?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen configuring each machine as closely as possible, is the only real difference form factor? Is 1920x1080 on 15.6 vs 16 that big of a deal? Are there features in the 1640....
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust got my new laptop 1/2 a week ago and installed a clean 7 on it. My idle temperatures are as follows:
Processor (T9800): ~43 degrees
ATI: ~48 degrees
HDD (500 GB 7200 RPM): ~40 degrees
Motherboard: ~44-50 degrees
This is at idle! When I game for a while, all temperatures hover at ~60 degrees. Is this normal?
My old laptop with a T5750 idles at 19 degrees for the processor, does the T9800 produce this much extra heat?
Also, if other 1640 users can post their specs and temperatures it'd be great.
After installing some core drivers, I still could not see the Dell symbol and the Studio XPS 1640 series in My Compyter/ Properties.
Moreover, the eject button of my DVD slotload doesn't know anymore, even if I have check I downloaded the lastest driver of it. (but I can eject by right click in the DVD driver in My Computer and my laptop still reads CD/DVD as usual)
In addition, after install ATI 3670 drivers, I do not see the ajustment for my graphic card anymore.
Any one knows which drivers and software I should install to get my Dell as a new Factory Image Dell Studio XPS 1640 with Windows 7 64 bit, please let me know.
Here are the details of my laptop:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz), Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1(32 BIT) - English

I honestly cannot make my mind up on what laptop to go for. I am actually agononizing over this and any help would be greatly appreciated. What would you guys do?
This is my XPS M1530 SPEC: ...
My studio XPS 1640 doesn't turn on. I can only see four touch buttons lit and everything else is off.
The only way to turn them off is by removing the battery and the moment I put it back they turn back on.
Using the AC adapter is the same, they remain on until I disconnect them. I attach a picture to show what I mean.
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong area but I tried one 2 days ago and had no reply's (which I know is not indicative of this fine forum ). To the ppoint. Adore my new laptop.
Not so fond of Vista. Like that is news. Anyhow I just want to know if any xps 1640 owner has achieved an install of Win 7 and managed to get all the various dell additions to work, ie dell camera facial recog, pinch touch pad, fual monitor etc.
A Dell Studio 1737 OR the Dell Studio XPS 1640? The Studio 1737 has been out longer for any problems to be fixed and whatnot and comes at a lower price. The Studio XPS 1640 has been out for just a couple of months and there are dozens of reports of BSOD's, heating issues, etc...
I would like to get the Studio XPS 1640, but generally I wait about 4-6 months after the product has been released before buying. There are talks about a built-in TV Tuner, but I haven't seen that on the Dell website. People are also saying Dell is going to upgrade the video card .....
I have a STUDIO XPS 1640 I bought an USB Digital Microscope I cannot get the drivers to install! I have a dell desktop both the notebook and the desktop are running the same version of windows vista and the drivers for the USB Digital Microscope installed on the desktop. So my question is how do I get the USB Digital Microscope working on my STUDIO XPS 1640 notebook? I really need to get the USB Digital Microscope to work on the notebook. The reason I bought the notebook was to keep the my kid off my desktop!
View 10 Replies View RelatedI bought my 1640 refurbished and it had eveything I wanted except for Blue Ray. So to rectify this I went on a search for a Blue Ray that would fit - Dell wanted $389 for a refurb-
I found a a tear down picture and zoomed in to get the part number BC-5600S. I confirmed this with the service manual.
I found one on Ebay for $130 so I ordered it. Some of the other players out there have an eject button - the BC-5600S does not have a eject button.
Has any one done this upgrade and could offer some tips or advise?
Or am I going to be the guy that needs to do that for you?
I'm trying to figure out how to set it to prefer 802.11a over 802.11g when both are offered in an area. I am usually in areas where 802.11g is completely clogged and 802.11a is totally free.
I have it set for 802.11a/g only, but it keeps defaulting to 802.11g and never goes to a unless a is the only thing offered. The only way I can get it to go to 802.11a is if I set it to 802.11a only.
I do a lot of roaming, and 802.11a is not offered everywhere so it is annoying to have to constantly go into the device manager and change it from 802.11a only to 802.11a/g.
My card is an Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN. Does anyone know how to get it to prefer 802.11a over g when they are both offered? There seems to be no option to do it like most cards do. I recently updated the drivers to the latest version, too
the one on the right is black 1640 with rgb led which i bought in 4/09;
left is white 1640 with rgb led just arrived this week:
the hardware id is the same on both lcd: sec5448
the lcd test from notebookcheck.net shows 270 nit on the one sits at right;
no test result on the left one, but i guess its about 300 nit.
its very obvious when you gotta see them side by side, the left is brighter and whiter
Which one should I get, 1340 or 1640 . Both have same specs (except for GPU and wireless thingie) :
CPU : Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 2x2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB, 3MB Cache.
Chipset : NVIDIA GeForce® MCP79MX
Memory : 4GB DDR3 at 1066MHz.
HDD : 5000GB 7200rpm SATA.
Optical : DVD+/-RW Slot(DVD/CD read/write)
Battery : 56 WHr 6-cell

Does the 13" weigh the same as MacBook 13", is the 16" too heavy ?
i have just purchased the studio xps 1640 with 6GB ram and vista 64. one of the programs that i use only works with XP professional.
can i install XP profeesional on this computer. if so i plan to partition the hard drive to do this.
My notebook eletrocuted me.
First I thought my arm felt just weird silver material around the notebook I figured it would be routh to my skin or something.
But when I lay my arm diagonal over the touchpad, I will actually get electrocuted!
Can anyone direct me to a place i'm able to obtain windows xp 32 bit drivers for my xps studio 1640? Currently i'm running vista 64bit, but due to a few problems i want to go back to XP 32 bit.
I've looked on dell's website and it seems they only provide vista and windows 7 drivers now. Since XP is still commonly used surly i can get the drivers from some where?
What do you guys use?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just bought a perfectly fine Studio XPS 1640 off of a guy locally, but the LCD is broken, he said that he has the 1920 x 1080 resolution, and i have a few questions because I am confused..
First of all, I measured it with a measuring tape and it is exactly 16", and it has a piece of clear plastic/glass over the entire front screen (including the Bezel), so which LCD out there can I buy so it will be compatible?
I thought the Studio XPS's LCDs are 15.6", and why is there a 1920 x 1200 resolution out there.
I'm thinking about purchasing a Studio XPS 16, but I hear all these stories about the heat.
View 8 Replies View RelatedThis has been happening lately ill be playing starcraft 2 ( other games as well ) but this one specifically that all of a sudden frame rates dip to 2 - 10 fps and the game crawls. Starcraft 2 gives me a warning saying my computer is running slow. I normally get 30 - 40 fps with a mix of medium/high settings at 1920 x 1080. Temps seem normal but my cpu usage is spiked at 100% when this is happening. I know throttling on the 1645 and 1647 is common but ive never had this problem with my 1640 until now. I have 2 years left of warranty so im ok. If i call dell what am i going to tell them and what are they going to do?
Below is a pic of temps
