I honestly cannot make my mind up on what laptop to go for. I am actually agononizing over this and any help would be greatly appreciated. What would you guys do?
Considering getting a new laptop. Was pretty much sold on the m1530. Now the 1640 is a contender. Main use of laptop will be for watching movies, web surf, multimedia/web design etc..., casual gaming and lastly school/study. These are the two spec setups I've been looking at. Obviously the 1640 would be quite a bit more $. Is the RGB LED LCD really worth it? I am sure movies would look sick on it but is it really that much of an improvment compared to the high res LED option on the m1530? How does the ATI compare to the NIVIDA in this case?
I currently have a great XPS 1530 with a T9300. Dell was having 25% off over the weekend and I have a EPP code through my company giving me a total of 32% off. So I decided to make the move to the 1640. I was a little frustrated with my 1530 as I could not clock the RAM to 800 eventhough I had purchased it from dell AS AN UPGRADE!! haha. I was disapointed with the graphics card as well, 256mb of ram just isnt enough to get me through the day, I also ordered the 1080p screen which the 8600gt just couldnt really handle even when scrolling media loaded webpages.
I ordered my 1530 originally with the 256gb Samsung SSD. Let me tell you, lightning fast...
My question to you guys is... I ordered the RGBLED 1080p screen but while configuring my hard drive options for the 1640, I was unable to choose the 256gb SSD as an option, so im going to swap the 500gb 7200rpm drive with the SSD. Coupled with the T9900 and the 4670, 4gb ram.. Is this thing going to be a beast or just a little faster?
im new here just wanna ask about my new xps studio laptop..
i bought it with a 64bit vista OS, the problem is i cant install a cad software because its for 32bit..can i install my laptop with a 32 bit OS? would it be no problem regarding my drivers?
Suppose I purchase one today at full retail price. Then, in say a week, there's a 20% (or whatever) coupon that comes out, or they go on sale.
Can I call Dell and ask for the difference? I know they have a 21 (or whatever) day return policy, so I would imagine the sale or coupon would have to come within that time frame.
Another question: Does the return policy time begin when I order or when it ships or when I receive it? .
Hey everyone one..i know there has been a some chatter here and there about overclock with the sxps 1640. Most in fact want to down clock to fix heating issues lol. Well i have my xps running pretty well and heat is not a factor anymore. athough im still not too happy about how much i spent..just making this laptop reasonable. anyways has anyone ventured with setfsb or anything?
When configuring each machine as closely as possible, is the only real difference form factor? Is 1920x1080 on 15.6 vs 16 that big of a deal? Are there features in the 1640....
After installing some core drivers, I still could not see the Dell symbol and the Studio XPS 1640 series in My Compyter/ Properties.
Moreover, the eject button of my DVD slotload doesn't know anymore, even if I have check I downloaded the lastest driver of it. (but I can eject by right click in the DVD driver in My Computer and my laptop still reads CD/DVD as usual)
In addition, after install ATI 3670 drivers, I do not see the ajustment for my graphic card anymore.
Any one knows which drivers and software I should install to get my Dell as a new Factory Image Dell Studio XPS 1640 with Windows 7 64 bit, please let me know.
Here are the details of my laptop:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz), Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1(32 BIT) - English Base Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz) Memory 4096MB 1067MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048] .....
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong area but I tried one 2 days ago and had no reply's (which I know is not indicative of this fine forum ). To the ppoint. Adore my new laptop.
Not so fond of Vista. Like that is news. Anyhow I just want to know if any xps 1640 owner has achieved an install of Win 7 and managed to get all the various dell additions to work, ie dell camera facial recog, pinch touch pad, fual monitor etc.
A Dell Studio 1737 OR the Dell Studio XPS 1640? The Studio 1737 has been out longer for any problems to be fixed and whatnot and comes at a lower price. The Studio XPS 1640 has been out for just a couple of months and there are dozens of reports of BSOD's, heating issues, etc...
I would like to get the Studio XPS 1640, but generally I wait about 4-6 months after the product has been released before buying. There are talks about a built-in TV Tuner, but I haven't seen that on the Dell website. People are also saying Dell is going to upgrade the video card .....
I have a STUDIO XPS 1640 I bought an USB Digital Microscope I cannot get the drivers to install! I have a dell desktop both the notebook and the desktop are running the same version of windows vista and the drivers for the USB Digital Microscope installed on the desktop. So my question is how do I get the USB Digital Microscope working on my STUDIO XPS 1640 notebook? I really need to get the USB Digital Microscope to work on the notebook. The reason I bought the notebook was to keep the my kid off my desktop!
I bought my 1640 refurbished and it had eveything I wanted except for Blue Ray. So to rectify this I went on a search for a Blue Ray that would fit - Dell wanted $389 for a refurb-
I found a a tear down picture and zoomed in to get the part number BC-5600S. I confirmed this with the service manual.
I found one on Ebay for $130 so I ordered it. Some of the other players out there have an eject button - the BC-5600S does not have a eject button. Has any one done this upgrade and could offer some tips or advise? Or am I going to be the guy that needs to do that for you?
I'm trying to figure out how to set it to prefer 802.11a over 802.11g when both are offered in an area. I am usually in areas where 802.11g is completely clogged and 802.11a is totally free.
I have it set for 802.11a/g only, but it keeps defaulting to 802.11g and never goes to a unless a is the only thing offered. The only way I can get it to go to 802.11a is if I set it to 802.11a only.
I do a lot of roaming, and 802.11a is not offered everywhere so it is annoying to have to constantly go into the device manager and change it from 802.11a only to 802.11a/g.
My card is an Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN. Does anyone know how to get it to prefer 802.11a over g when they are both offered? There seems to be no option to do it like most cards do. I recently updated the drivers to the latest version, too
the one on the right is black 1640 with rgb led which i bought in 4/09; left is white 1640 with rgb led just arrived this week: the hardware id is the same on both lcd: sec5448
the lcd test from notebookcheck.net shows 270 nit on the one sits at right; no test result on the left one, but i guess its about 300 nit. its very obvious when you gotta see them side by side, the left is brighter and whiter
Can anyone direct me to a place i'm able to obtain windows xp 32 bit drivers for my xps studio 1640? Currently i'm running vista 64bit, but due to a few problems i want to go back to XP 32 bit.
I've looked on dell's website and it seems they only provide vista and windows 7 drivers now. Since XP is still commonly used surly i can get the drivers from some where?
I just bought a perfectly fine Studio XPS 1640 off of a guy locally, but the LCD is broken, he said that he has the 1920 x 1080 resolution, and i have a few questions because I am confused..
First of all, I measured it with a measuring tape and it is exactly 16", and it has a piece of clear plastic/glass over the entire front screen (including the Bezel), so which LCD out there can I buy so it will be compatible?
I thought the Studio XPS's LCDs are 15.6", and why is there a 1920 x 1200 resolution out there.
