Dell :: Upgrading Inspiron 172000000000000000000000

Dec 17, 2009

My Wife is getting a new PC so I am taking Her 2 year old Inspiron 1720. It has T7300 Core 2 2MB cache processor and Nvidia 8400M GS 128MB video and 2MB DDR2 RAM. I will use it for work and games when on the road, vacation, etc. I play Left for Dead, COD 4, TF 2 and similar. I have a killer home gaming rig, BTW.

I ran 3D mark06 and got 1,432 marks. Not too good. I don't mind spending a few bucks to upgrade it, but obviously at point, a new one is smarter.

Here are the two options I am exploring:

I found a Dell Nvidia 8600M GT video card for $130. I believe this is good step up from my current card.

I also have found some Processor upgrades too. I can get a 2.4ghz Core 2 for $200. It would be 20% faster clock speed and have 4mb cache instead of 2mb. I also found a 2.8ghz for $270.

Dell :: Upgrading My Inspiron 6400?

Feb 27, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 that current has a Intel T2400 1.83Ghz (Core Duo) and I'm wondering if anyone has upgrade recommendations for this? Currently I have .99GB Ram so that would probably be okay but any ideas would be appreciated.

Also, anyone know of an online maintenance manual for the Inspiron 6400?

Dell :: Upgrading Inspiron 1545

Mar 23, 2009

I ordered two basic Inspiron 1545's on March 16th. $479 each on the one day special.

Dell says it will arive on April 6th. Does Dell usually take this long to deliver?

Both have Dual Core Pentiums. Can they be upgraded to Core 2 Duo later? Are the CPU's soldered on the main board?

Ram is limited to four gigabytes, even though the laptop uses a 64-bit CPU. Is this something that might be fixed in a future BIOS upgrade?

Is there any way to upgrade the onboard graphics? I found an ExpressCard chasis that has PCI express slots, but it costs over $700. I could build a PC for less than that. Do I have any other options?

Dell :: Upgrading Inspiron 1520 RAM From 2gb To...?

Feb 23, 2009

Me and my sister have 2x 1520's and I'm looking to upgrade my RAM. Both laptops have 2gb of RAM and still contain the original build from Dell.

I have a few questions...

1. They're both running Vista Home Premium -- what's the most RAM it can handle?
2. Do they contain 2x 1gb sticks, or 1x 2gb stick?

I know there's tons of different RAM available, so could someone please link me to a 2gb stick that'll fit and work in my laptop? The cheaper the better, but ideally with a decent warrenty and from a respected company if possible.

Dell :: RAM Compatibility (upgrading On Inspiron 6400)

Aug 16, 2009

I want to upgrade the ram on an older Inspiron 6400 from 1gb to 2gb. When I look online (including old posts on this site), it seems there are 2 options:

2 x 1GB Module 1024MB-533MHz DDR2-533 PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM; or
2 x 1GB Module 1024MB-667MHz DDR2-667 PC2-5300, 200p SODIMM.

Would my system be compatible with either types of ram? It currently runs 2 x 512MB 533MHZ DDR2-533 PC2-4200 .....

Dell :: Upgrading Inspiron 9300 Mobo

Mar 1, 2009

I have an inspiron 9300 and a precision m90. my m90 has the t7200 and is vastly superior to the now aging 9300. the chasis are very similar and the mobos look exactly the same, dimension wise, minus one minor detail, the rear usb ports are farther apart on the m90 mobo, not by much but just enough to be irksome and cast doubt.
has anyone tried to upgrade the 9300 mobo and have they tried it with the m90 mobo? I can live w/o that pair of usb ports next to quadrupling the performance.

ulimately, I am trying to save the great monitor and in great condition 9300 chasis and upgrade the mobo/processor/ram.

what have you tried, learned, and/or recommend to get the 9300 upgraded to close to or better than the m90 with t7200?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and it is currently running with the A12 BIOS version.

I notice that there are several newer versions available... A14, A15 & A17

Since the details of the A14 version indicate that it includes an "Intel CPU microcode update", must I FIRST UPGRADE with this A14 version before I THEN upgrade with the latest A17 version, or by simply upgrading directly with the A17 version, will this also include all previous updates, including the Intel CPU microcode update...

Dell :: Will Upgrading My Inspiron 1520 From Vista To Windows 7 Void My Warranty?

Just as the title states. Dell has not given me a straight answer. When I asked in their support they said and I quote.

"We do offer upgrade packages, for windows 7 if you would like to do that it is very easy to do. I can help you with that now"

However He didn't answer my question after asking twice he gave me similar replies.

I have Hardware warranty and currently my pc is having a few hardware issues.

Would It void my warranty if I send it in with windows 7?

Dell :: Upgrading Hard Disk On Inspiron 1520 Running Vista

Jan 6, 2009

I am replacing the installed Seagate Momentus 160 gb 5400 SATA disk with a Seagate Momentus 320gb 7200rpm SATA hard disk as I need the extra space to hold my growing itunes collection and feel the extra speed would also be welcome.

I have the original Dell installation disks (Operating System, drivers etc), the installation disks for the subsequently installed software (other than the freebies including iTunes etc available on the net) and have backed up all my critical data to an external hard drive using the vista backup facility for subsequent restoration once all the software has been installed.

I will of course keep the 160 gb drive available with all it's data intact as a secondary safeguard until I have satisfactorily completed the installation and testing of the new disk.

Since new HDD has been placed, support team installed Windows 7 Home Premium and I had a excellent booting time of 20 seconds (total boot time, BIOS A07, no mSATA).

While upgrading Dell drivers for bluetooth, prompted for BIOS update and upgraded it now.

After upgrading my BIOS to A09, now my BIOS boot time itself 19 seconds, and windows boot time is 23 seconds.

Dell :: Inspiron 1520: Upgrading Cpu From T5450-T7500 Change Gaming Perfomance- Has 8600m Gt

Sep 23, 2009

Just like the title said, will upgrading my cpu from the T5450(1.66ghz) to a T7500(2.2ghz) change my gaming performance or is the T5450 enough power to fully run my videocard.

I OC my videocard by 30% so the clocks are 617.5Mhz/520Mhz instead of 475/400mhz, does the ocing get bottle necked by the weak cpu?

Is it worth the $100 to upgrade my cpu or should i just save the money and buy a new laptop because my 1520 is almost 2 years old but it's a very good laptop, i can get 4700 and sometimes even 4850 on 3dmark06.

Dell :: Upgrading CPU In My M90

Apr 28, 2009

I ordered my M90 on Dell Outlet a while ago. Top of the line everything except the CPU. It's a T2300, I believe (Core Duo, 1.6 Ghz). In preparation for Windows 7, I want upgrade the CPU for speed and for 64 bit.

I'm looking at a T7200 (2.0 Ghz, 667 fsb) for under $100 new, but pulled. First off, just to double check, this will work in my laptop, right?

Second, how involved is replacing the CPU? I've built desktops before no problem, and I've repaired my wife's screen on her HP, but never on my M90. I assume it won't be too bad as long as I follow the manual and keep track of parts.

Dell :: What's The Best OLD 17 To Buy For Upgrading?

Jan 26, 2009

I've been putting together cheap, old Gateway Solo 9550 notebooks for a few years now. They use the Coppermine 1066, which is just good enough for Win2KPro, and really light work.

I got a great deal on my Inspiron 9200 from Dell only to find it discontinued just weeks later. My fault, but then again, I got the best I could afford at the time, which was the most slimmed down version.

Here & there, I upgraded everything; CPU, RAM, hdd, DVD-RW, added Bluetooth, better battery, etc.

But I've reached the limit. I can't even overclock it .....

Dell :: Upgrading A Latitude XT HDD

Feb 2, 2010

I bought this the other day for my Latitude XT:

http://www.amazon.com/32GB-1-8-inch-...4&sr=8-2-fkmr0

Wanted to replace the 4200rpm hard drive currently in there with something faster. I updated the BIOS to A09 (January 2010) to prevent any compatibility issues. I plugged it in and booted the computer, popped my Windows CD in, goes through the pre-load stuff. When it gets to the part about setting up (prior to where it asks about formatting and all that) I get a BSOD.

Sorry for the brief description but I'm trying to work on it while I type. Any suggestions? Do I have it plugged in incorrectly? What should I be looking for?

EDIT: I checked for the hard drive in the BIOS. There's not many options to see what HDD is detected. However, when my 80GB drive is connected it shows "80 GB drive". When I have the SSD plugged in nothing shows up in the BIOS for it. Does this mean the SSD is not compatible with my machine?

EDIT2: Forgot to mention their website claims it's compatible with my laptop:

http://www.activemp.com/SSD/18-IDE-P...SD-upgrade.htm

EDIT3: I sent them a "polite" e-mail about my situation and will let you all know if I have any success.

Dell :: Upgrading From T5670

Jan 28, 2010

I'm apologizing in advance if I am missing something or didnt perform a good enough search. I am usually very good with finding information but I think I have second-guessed myself to death on this now!

I am upgrading my t5670 in my vostro 1510. it has the GM965 chipset and I am talking to an ebay seller right now about buying a T9300 SLAZB chip. Now I have looked and found that it is "FCBGA6" vs. a "socket P" and this concerns me...will this 479 socket chip work just fine in my laptop?

Is there a difference (positive/negative) if I choose this chip over say, a SLAYY one?
