So I got my computer this past August and registered my system for the Windows 7 free upgrade in October.
On the 22nd, when windows 7 came out, i went back to Dell's website where i had previously registered my computer and saw that i could now enter shipping info.
After doing so, I placed my order and later got a confirmation email that my order had been received. I checked the status of this order and saw that it said "Processing
I am trying to upgrade to windows 7 with the free windows 7 upgrade kit I have both Cds and i put in the home premium windows 7 cd it starts up and tells me "run-time error 70' permission denied"

I have noticed that when I try to run "model.txt" it does not show up and when I go to system it does not detect my processer and other things...
I was told that there are some problems to upgrade my notebook HP fram WIN 8 to WIN 8.1.
My notebook is: Notebook HP Pavilion 15-n042sl (ENERGY STAR) Model : F0D82EA ...
and for example if I do not upgrade and I stay with my WIN 8 what will it happen?
Well I ended up slapping another copy of win 7 on my laptop as I got sick of waiting.
My Dell Win 7 DVD came today. It also includes the COA to put at the bottom next to the Vista one.
Also a neat little bonus was a "Easy Upgrade DVD" which has all the Windows 7 drivers on it. It also updates the X-Fi MB to work with Win 7.
I'm thinking about pre-ordering Windows 7 Home Premium to upgrade from my Vista Home Premium (32 bit) on my Studio 15. I've ran Windows Upgrade Advisor and under "Devices" it listed about six items that said "Run Windows Update after installing Windows 7 to make this device compatible" while everything else said "This device is compatible with Windows."
I had four items DigitalPersona Personal 3.1.0, Dell Support Center (Support Software), Dell Dock, and Dell Video Chat (remove only) that said "You might experience minor issues using this program while running Windows 7. For more information, go online to the manufacturer's website."
1. So can I expect the above four items not to work after the upgrade and is there any other surprises I should be aware of?
2. With the Windows 7 Upgrade is there an option to do an upgrade install in addition to a full install?
3. I've never installed Windows before or did an Windows Upgrade how difficult is this going to be, will files in "My Documents" be transferred? Will I have to reinstall all my programs?
I registered online w/ my service tag a while ago. Will they be sending it out tomorrow and do u have to pay shipping and handling

I just registered on the win7.dell.com website for my brother and noticed that he was getting the 64bit version of windows 7, which is strange because he has a 32bit version of vista.
Just to throw this out there, I was wondering if everyone else was getting the 64bit version as well.
Currently running vista 32 and I want to upgrade to windows 7 64 but on the dell device driver's page there is no support for windows 7. Only XP and Vista drivers are listed.
Will the drivers automatically update through Windows 7 or do I try to find the drivers myself?

I was under the initial impression that any dell laptop sold in the few months before Win 7 released would be eligible for the free upgrade.
But when I look in the lineup there's one that says "Windows 7 ready" for an extra $140?? Is that the only one that gets the free upgrade? It's not really free then and why not just buy it separately?
Does anyone else have a problem registering for the free upgrade to windows 7. Whenever I try to validate my service tag it says I should wait 10 days because my order might not be in the system. I order my E6400 early mid July. And it also says my system isn't eligible when it is.
I've chatted with a Dell person online and he was no help. He just gave me a number to call. I called that number and I had to talk to a lady with an Indian accent that didn't understand what I was saying. And I got transfer a couple times until some guy gave me a number to call, but I couldn't because they were closed or something. Now I call that number and they give me another number to call. Everyone keeps saying "I am not trained to handle this issue."
For those of you that have a 1640 and have upgraded from Vista to 7, how long did the install take you? And my second question is...did you run into any complications with the upgrade process that I should be aware of before I start it on my wife's laptop?
View 10 Replies View Relatedi just did a clean install of windows 7 on my studio 1555 and was having some issues with the audio drivers. i found and installed the idt audio drivers from the dell website,
but it didn't seem to install the idt audio software with it. i know the idt codec is installed because when i go into device manager it shows up,
but i really liked the nifty idt software that came with vista that allowed me to switch between headphone and hdmi output quite easily as well as turn off all of the stupid SRS sound enhancements.
I have two questions:
1. the smartsource site somehow does not work on my SXPS16; it simply reports an error saying that the addin did not work correctly. I already reported this to Dell Technical support, but they responded in some vague default email message that I should contact customer service. So I did, but never got an answer until now (sent it over a week ago). Any idea how to get the facial recognition (and other) software?
2. The registration for the Windows 7 upgrade also does not work. It reports that I am not eligible for the upgrade (which is not true, because my system complies with all demands, and it was purchased with Win7 upgrade. I also reported this, but got the run-around again .....

I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my ~2 year old m1330 laptop and now I have the following issues with audio that I haven't found a solution for:
1. The internal speakers don't work at all.
2. Only the left headphone output works, not both as before the upgrade.
3. When I have both headphones and HDMI plugged in, I have to use the Sound control panel to set one or the other to default (with the "Set Default" button) to switch which one gets the audio.
I'd prefer that it be automatically switched to headphones when I plug them in, and back to HDMI when headphones are not plugged in, but I've not found any way to make this happen. In fact it would be even better if both headphone and HDMI audio were active simultaneously
I just picked up a copy of home permium and I am debating between 32bit and 64bit.
Dell's webpage does not list the 1535 as one of the compatible systems. Has anyone does it yet? Any major issues with drivers and the 64bit version?

Do not purchase the dell studio 14z if you plan to upgrade your laptop to windows 7, I purchased mine on the 30th from bestbuy and went to sign up for the program but because dell gave the laptop to them on the 18th of june it's not eligible, so I had to return it to bestbuy and order the same thing through dell.
Definatly upgrade to the 900p screen, the 720 screens are grainy and u can see spaces inbetween each pixel causing u to see columns, my friends 14z with 900p doesnt have these spaces and has way better viewing angles.
I am receiving a replacement laptop soon. I have not received it, but I have a couple of questions. It has the 1 gb ATI gfx card.. 4670 i think?? Now from what I understand, this is relatively new. On dell's website it says any laptops ordered between june 26th and december 31st qualify.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just received Windows 7 Upgrade Disc from Dell, and it says "Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional Upgrade" on the disc and COA also says "Win Vista Bus to Win 7 Pro UPG Fullfill."
I was curious if it is really impossible to do a clean install with upgrade disc as regular upgrade disc is. (At least I was told that it is impossible), but I did not want to upgrade my notebook to Windows 7 yet.
So, I gave it a try on VMWare. It installed just like regular Windows 7 disc in a empty HDD. It even took COA that came with the upgrade disc.
I did not try activating because it probably will fail if it uses SLIC to activate, or in worst case, it will get activated on my VM, and I will be unable to active it when I actually want to upgrade my notebook's OS
After upgrading to Windows 8.1, my XPS 13 keyboard backlight remains on 100% of the time. i can turn it off with the function key on the keyboard, Â but after a restart the problem repeats. Also, I have not found away to get it to automatically turn off after the keyboard has not been touched for some time (which is how the backlight is supposed to work).
Is there any fix for this? I've already installed all of the Windows 8.1 drivers from your website.
I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 just a few days back. Since the upgrade, I'm not able to access any of my USB pendrives and flashdrives after plugging them in the hub. The oc just does not read them. The light on pen drives glows for 1 second and then goes off.

Acer sends an upgrade disc that is of the same type as your Vista OS.
So I got an upgrade disc for Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit, as well as a product key on the COA.
What I want to ask is whether it is possible for me to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit through a clean install by finding a friend with the normal retail Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade DVDs, using the 64 bit DVD and then entering the product key that came with my Acer 32 bit Windows 7 HP upgrade disc.
Has any one here received their windows upgrade 7 from Acer yet? Please can you tell me if the 64bit version is included or is it 32bit only?

I purchased my Dell Latitude E6500 direct from Dell USA Small Business on 2008-11-04, and shipped on 2008-11-21. It was pre-installed with Windows Vista Ultimate.
I've seen that systems purchased more recently (~June or July) qualify for a free upgrade from Vista to 7. I'm guessing there is nothing to qualify me for such a free upgrade, but considering that I haven't even had this system for a year yet, should there be any other upgrade discounts or specials available - either through Dell, directly from Microsoft, etc.?
Especially with the scores of users who claim that Windows 7 is really just another service pack to Vista, and with Apple offering their latest OS upgrade for a mere $29, I would certainly hope I'm not looking to pay the $219.99 as listed at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/default.aspx - the same price as if I had never purchased Vista and upgraded a 7-year-old XP installation instead.
I recently purchased a VGN-SR490PBB which came with preinstalled XP Pro. According to all the literature, I am entitled to a Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) upgrade.
I proceeded to install the Recovery Media Kit that came with my laptop. The recovery media says basically, "Use this Recovery Kit to recover the preinstalled operating system and applications..."
It installed Vista Ultimate (64-Bit). I am being shipped the Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) upgrade from Mentor Media. So you can probably see the issue already, 64-Bit OS installed, 32-Bit upgrade disks in the mail. Not going to work.
So here's what happened so far (whole process below took 2-hours).
1. Chatted with a live person from Sony's Tech Support person, who directed me to Mentor Media .....
I just made my weekly call to Mentor Media and this is the first time someone spent enough time to tell me something potentially encouraging about my Windows 7 upgrade. She indicated that this week they finally (her word) have given them some information when things would ship. She said my order would ship within 3-5 business days – maybe before – and encouraged me to call back Friday for an update. She said that e-mails typically go out 24-48 hours after it has actually shipped, and to not necessarily expect the web site status to change. Somehow I sensed she maybe knew something concrete this time instead of just having to say that they didn’t know.
I’m cautiously optimistic.
I already bought a new upgrade license for Windows 7 and was about ready to install it on my Acer, but hearing this am going to hold off a bit longer in hopes that I can save it to use on my older Vista desktop. Hope I’m not hung out to dry again being suckered into waiting just a bit longer …
Has anyone that has received their upgrade kit found that it does a BIOS upgrade? The BIOS on my Acer M1202 is SLIC 2.0 compliant and presumably won’t allow any OEM activation key to work on it until it’s 2.1 compliant. Just curious how they are doing this.
