Dell XPS 15 :: How To Configure On-chip MSata Encryption
May 24, 2014
I have just purchased an XPS15. I understand that the mSata drive (a Samsung 841 512GB) supports on-chip encryption, however I'm struggling a bit to understand how to enable this. I have read some posts which seem to suggest that it's as simple as going in to the BIOS and configuring the "HDD Password", option in the security section, however this seems just a little too easy (I was expecting to have to create a public/ private keypair or something to that effect).
How to authoritatively confirm whether this is indeed the correct way to configure encryption on the disk? Or is this just a basic BIOS level password which somehow protects the disk simply by virtue of the fact that it won't allow the machine to boot unless the correct password is entered?

What's the deal with the SSD option in new laptops?I can't configure the M1330 with SSD.
Is Dell discontinuing all SSDs? I can't find them in the other XPS laptop either.

I understand the basic differences between the two technologies, but I'd like to know how the differences relate specifically to the 1530.
Right now, my debate is : 1900x1200 LCD vs. 1440x900 LED.
I like the idea of having an LED screen, specifically for lower power consumption, quicker "on-time", and thinner frame. However, I have to sacrifice by getting a lower resolution screen. On the 1530, does the thinness of the LED screen translate into an overall thinner notebook? It's important to note, that the lower power consumption of the LED isn't much of realistic issue for me, because I'm plugged into a socket 99% of the time. I simply like the idea of being more environmentally friendly.

Im trying to decide on a few options, if they are worth it or not.
1. should I spend $50 more on the 2.53 or will the 2.4 be enough... I would like the 2.66 because of the L2 Cache, but $250 seems like a steep price. I will primarily be doing photoshop image editting as my most intensive application.
2. standard 160 gb 5400, or upgrade to 320 gb 7200 for $90? I am leaning toward the upgrade because its reasonably priced. Buying a drive myself and upgrading will cost between 60-80 and I will void the warranty.
3. 2gb ram or 4gb? I feel like I could probably buy another 2 gb on my own for $50 through my brief websearches. I dont think the $100 premium is worth it. Plus I wont void the warranty by upgrading the ram myself.
4. Just a question... Does the premium carbon fiber add anything in terms of strength to the housing, or is it purely an aesthetic thing?

Following a swap of hard drive between two E4300 (asked by the dell support...), the TPM and encrypting settings have been erased.
In order to retrieve the functionality and access to encrypted files, I did the following:
System restauration at a date before the fatal swapping of hard drive
Bios reset of the tpm and reinstallation of all the tpm software .....

Though in all adverts it boasts about strong encryption options, I could not find any way of encrypting the disk other than Windows Bitlocker.
In the Dell Data Protection Console, but there are no options in the Encryption Tab. I even downloaded directly from Dell product site DDP Encryption software (650 Mb !) but in the installation, personal installation option is disabled asking for only Enterprise installation which requires some kind of a server.

Dell announced, a few weeks ago, a new replacement for the 57XX and 55XX Mobile Broadband MiniPCIe cards that they are installing as integrated WWAN in select notebooks.
The new Dell Wireless 5600 Mobile Broadband card is based on the Qualcomm Gobi chipset, and therefore supports all major NA carriers (CDMA and GSM/HSPA), and all global UMTS/HSPA bands.
As a result, you can theoretically use this one integrated device on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, O2, Telus, Rogers, Fido, T-Mobile, or any other EVDO or HSPA service globally, just by activating with the provider (CDMA/EVDO) or using the providers SIM card (GSM/HSPA).

some good encryption programs that I could use to encrypt files such as text documents and videos. I recently had a laptop stolen with some sensitive information and I would like to take some precautions with my MBP. I was looking for a program that would encrypt using AES Algorithm.

How to Setup - RAID Volumes
BEFORE CONTINUING WITH THIS POST, BACKUP YOUR DATA AND CREATE RECOVERY DISKS IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS!! DID I MENTION MAKING RECOVERY DISKS AND BACKUPS? GOOD!
RAID 0 as defined from this Wikipedia Article
Quote:
RAID 0
RAID 0 (striped disks) distributes data across multiple disks in a way that gives improved speed at any given instant. If one disk fails, however, all of the data on the array will be lost, as there is neither parity nor mirroring. In this regard, RAID 0 is somewhat of a misnomer, in that RAID 0 is non-redundant. A RAID 0 array requires a minimum of two drives. A RAID 0 configuration can be applied to a single drive provided that the RAID controller is hardware and not software (i.e. OS-based arrays) and allows for such configuration. This allows a single drive to be added to a controller already containing another RAID configuration when the user does not wish to add the additional drive to the existing array. In this case, the controller would be set up as RAID only (as opposed to SCSI only (no RAID)), which requires that each individual drive be a part of some sort of RAID array...............

I found a good deal on an E6400 which is perfect except that it comes with Dell Wireless 1397. I want the Intel 5100 for Linux compatibility, but I'd hate to pass up a good opportunity just because of the wireless chipset.
I have a few E6400s at work, and it looks like the whole underside needs to be unscrewed (and I won't test on them for obvious reasons)?

So I updated to Bios A09 hoping it would improve either my Wifi issues, my throttling issues, or my battery life issues. After the A09 update, my nVidia Graphics chip is no longer recognized, and therefore have lost my dual external monitor support. That may improve battery life I guess since the nVidia chip is now worthless and I'm forced to the Intel 4000. Not the change I was hoping for.
Is it possible to revert the A09 bios back to A06? Is this isolated to me, or was it just not QA'd at all by Dell?I worked around the wifi issue with a USB dongle, and am living with the battery life issues by getting less work done on airplane flights.Losing my multi-monitor support is killing my productivity. Also losing my patience with this machine and Dell in general.

I tried upgrading my Latitude's RAM using a 2MB chip first in the rear slot, and Win 7 didn't read any additional RAM (showing only 1GB). So I moved the 2MB chip to the MB under the keyboard and now it won't reboot. I tried to put the original RAM chips back in their respective slots (each 1MB RAM) but it still won't boot.
I guess I can't update the BIOS if it won't boot.

Was thinking about flipping the switch on FileVault, but the reported issues with backup restorations, increased susceptibility to corruption due to sparsefile usage, etc., have me concerned.
I currently use encrypted DMGs for the absolutely must-not-be-plaintext stuff, but I don't particularly want anything on my laptop available in the case of theft.
I'm also using a Time Capsule in conjunction with Time Machine for backups at the moment.
All that said, is anyone using, say, TrueCrypt or some other approach to full-disk encryption which they support?

I downloaded the blue tooth stack and installed it, when it runs it says it cannot communicate with the blue tooth chip and aborts. I have turned all the necessary things in system setup for the internal blue tooth device but it still does not work. Isn't there supposed to be a blue tooth indicator on my laptop somewhere that should be on, if so I do not see it.

I have bought ideapad y510p with an already pre installed windows 8 and intel vga card. however, i have found out that the nvidia geforce GT 750M is not installed, so i have downloaded the driver with the latest version R331.65 So, normally i have installed the driver. and now even though that i have the latest drivers i wonder why i still have the 1366x768 as the highest resolution and not the 1920x1080. also to my wonder is why when i connect to the monitor it can have the 1920x1080 and not on the laptop screen.
So How to have the 1920x1080 resolution?

My original hard drive of Acer aspire 5738G crashed and I bought a new 1 TB WD hard drive. I tried to reinstall Windows 7 from recovery disk. All data copy and system restoration (from 3 restoration disks) completed successfully. But after the auto reboot, during “Setup is applying system settings” stage I encountered error message “Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run this computer’s hardware”. I tried reinstalling the OS multiple times but every time I am getting the same error. Before replacing my hard drive, I was using Windows 7 Home Premium OEM version and now I was trying to restore the same in my system.

Using a mid-2009 MBP -- have grown to really like this notebook. Given that it gets carried around often, I'd like to have everything on it protected by something more than just a simple login password.
I use Time Machine in conjunction with a Time Capsule to keep things backed up, but my understanding is that if I were to enable FileVault to encrypt the disk, I would have to log out of my user account for any backup to actually run. This is pretty inconvenient and a ridiculous issue in general.
What are my other options, folks? Should I just look into using TrueCrypt? (ETA: apparently TrueCrypt doesn't play nice with Time Machine either...)
