Dell :: XPS 1530 Dual Boot With Win Vista Home Edition
Nov 26, 2008
I am planning to buy Dell XPX 1530 or HP DV4 1131tx for purely to run virtual machines.
is there any possibility to make it dual boot with Windows server 2003 standard edition or Win XP 64 bit? If possible then what are features i won't be able use for above both notebooks.

My XPS1530 came with Vista 32 Home Premium when I bought it, since then I have received a Vista 64 Home Premium disc from Dell (for free). Right now I am running the 64bit version of Vista on the laptop

I'm wanting to install XP on my Vista machine so I can play games better on it later on. What do I need to do other than get a copy of XP to make it work? Do I just install them both and then boot whatever one I like when the computer starts up?

I wanna dual boot Vista with XP. Will I have to reinstall Vista? Can the computer handle both in a dual boot? Also, what programs could I use for this?

Note- Vista has ability to manage and shrink partitions->Start->right click 'Computer"->manage->Disk Management->click drive (C)->shrink volume
If you have XP or need to partition a space bigger than Vista will allow, follow this walkthrough with MEPIS:
Step One
download Simply MEPIS 3.3 here:
http://iso.linuxquestions.org/mepis/2
Step Two..
(requires DVD/CD burner -/+ R/RW)
Burn it to CD/DVD as an ISO image
Vista's Default burner does not include ISO imaging software, It can be downloaded here:
32-bit version
64-bit version
Step Three..
Boot from the CD drive, put Linux CD in drive and boot. It will run Simply MEPIS from the CD, but it will not install
Step Four..
Sign in as: root, password: root
Step Five..
Click on "Run QTParted"- that will open a box showing your partitions. The main Windows partition is usually /dev/hda1
Step Six..
Right click on your Windows partition, and choose RESIZE
Step Seven...
In the box labeled FREE SIZE AFTER, type the size (in MB) that you want the new partition to be. That will create free space.
Step Eight..
Right click on the free space, click on create
Step Nine..
Select partition type (NTFS or FAT32), click OK
Step Ten..
Click on file(top left), then commit- changes will take effect
Step Eleven..
Click close, then click on the K in the lower left of screen and logout, restart computer
Step Twelve..
remove CD and it will boot to windows, check your partitions. Insert Vista OS to install on new partition
OR
For XP installation on new Partition ....

I have an Acer Aspire 8930G-7665, OEM Windows Vista x64. I want to set it up to dual boot between Vista and Windows 7, hence the thread title. However, I've had nothing but problems since the beginning.
Forgetting all the issues getting it partitioned, which I've done, I can't get the computer to boot off the DVD. This is strange because the same DVD worked fine on a Dell unit previously.
The first hurdle is that I can't get it to present me an option to boot from CD. The workaround is to change the boot order, which I've done. But now when it accesses the DVD drive to read the DVD there, the computer simply stops responding. There's a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen.

purchased a Compaq 6735s notebook. It came with Vista installed, but he wanted XP as that is what he is familiar with. Also wanted to have Vista to become familiar with that os. I partitioned the drive changed the SATA setting to IDE in CMOS and installed XP Home on the drive. On reboot it now defaults to XP but doesn't recognize the Network Controlller and several other "unknown devices" Of course I am unableto connect to the internet to download new drivers etc. So my questions are: What information is necessary to diagnose this problem? Where can I find that? (and) How can I choose between OS's at startup and avoid device compatibility issues?

I think I have a understanding of the process. Where I am not sure is the partitioning.
- Should I completely format the hard drive first and then begin my dual booting process?
or
- When I insert my windows prof [32bit] CD will I be given the option to format the entire hard drive and create new partitions?
and lastly
What is the best way to partition drives for windows XP and Vista with a 160 gb hard drive?

I have been searching all over various forums and tech sites for an answer. Currently I have 2 GB of ram in my 1520 that's running Home Premium. I've done a clean install after adding the 1 GB Turbo Cache module. It was only about $30.00 and figured worth the risk to try for performance gains. I haven't felt much there.
Does anyone have any positive feedback on performance when upgrading from 2 GB to 4 GB of RAM? I am running 32 BIT and don't care that the full 4 GB are not recognized. I don't want to waste money unless it will make some difference.
Aside from the clean install, I've been using X-Setup Pro, Tweak UAC and TweakIV for optimizing the settings for a little speed. I've also tweaked the services according to Black Viper's web site. The software tweaking has helped immensely.
I appreciate anyone's feedback on upgrading to 4 GB of ram. Sorry if this has been an old discussion getting beat up once again. However, prices are right around $75.00 for 4 GB of G Skill from Newegg.

Dell never gave my girlfriend a disc to re-install Vista.
Actually... I'm playing the role of Tech Support Guy (even speaking to her with a difficult-to-understand Indian accent!!).
She had a crash, so I used VistaPE to get her data off of the computer. Now, I wanna restore Vista to the original factory settings. Sounds easy enough... use f8, right?
Wrong... it won't work in my case. The recovery partition is still there... I just can't access it. The operating system won't boot up at all. I used a non-Dell Vista Home Premium disc to access the Vista System Recovery option, but that doesn't help. I can't get at Dell's recovery partition.
I figure if I had a re-installation disc that's actually from Dell, I could access Vista's System Recovery feature that includes the Dell option to restore the computer to the original factory settings. Problem is, I can't get ahold of one.
Does anybody know where I can find one without going directly to the Dell website? I think Dell has the worst customer service on the planet and I would pay someone to hit me in the head with a sledgehammer before I'd spend one dollar on a Dell product. I've been scouring the internet for two days and can't seem to find a stray copy of what I need.
The computer came factory-installed with the 32-bit (x86) Windows Vista Home Premium.
Yeah... you read that right: a DELL with VISTA!! Could it get any worse?!
This whole thing is driving me bat-sh*t crazy.
I hate Dell... I thank you all in advance for any help that you can give.
Maybe someone would be so kind as to post an .iso image of their own disc?!

I want to do a clean Vista install on the above notebook, and if the time comes, restore the setup (OS) to the default config with minimal effort. Read a lot of threads on how to do this, but just need some help/advice on the following.
Currently the HDD partitioned as:
110MB (EISA Config), FAT16 Pri
10GB, RECOVERY (D:), NTFS Pri
136GB, OS (C:), NTFS Pri Act
2.5GB MEDIADIRECT, FAT32
Discs supplied with laptop: Vista Reinstall DVD, Dell Drivers & Utilities, Roxio, Dell MediaDirect
What I want is to do a clean Vista install to the OS (C:) partition (formatting it), but still keep the other partitions in case I have to resell my notebook. My main concern is not being able to restore the factory image back to C .....

I read through some of the writeups I found in various threads, and reformatted my XPS with Vista 64.
This was after I previously wiped the laptop, and installed a fresh 32bit copy, and ran it for about a year. A few things I've noticed:
Performance is MUCH snappier. I also upgraded RAM (2-4gb) at the same time, so this may have something to do with it, but it's a definite increase in speed navigating through windows!

I'm one of those people that purchased a notebook during the free Vista to W7 upgrade period so I'm eligible for the no cost W7 upgrade. However, I would also like to additionally upgrade from Home Premium to W7 Ultimate now that it's available.
What would be the most efficient and economical route to combine all these upgrades and include a student discount? Is there a way to do this so that I only have to upgrades once?

What web browser does Vista Home Basic come with? Is it IE6 or IE7?
I'm a bit stumped because it seems that may have foolishly removed IE7 from my laptop.
Chrome is on there now, but a shortcut to IE7 is still on the quick launch bar.
I wanted to bring IE7 back and install it, but I don't see a copy for Vista home basic online.

I have acer 5570-4011 laptop with vista home (and ubuntu on a separate partition). I rebooted from cd, using winxp pe, deleted all files on vista partition, except those in the root, and started to install win xp pro. After installation files were copied to the hard drive, I restarted without cd and when setup continued, it gave me "file ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. Error code is 7".
On MS support site they say about ACPI or memory problems and suggest to press F7 during that step to skip ACPI check, but it doesnt help in my case.
How can I install WinXP ?

My xps was having start-up issues and when trying to run the Vista Start-up Repair disk I received an error:
'The instruction at 0x7336e159 referenced memory at 0x00000076. The memory could not be read. Press CANCEL to terminate the program'.
Then at re-boot I accessed the boot menu and ran a PSA Diagnostic and received the following error code while scanning the processor memory:
' ERROR CODE: 0142 MSG: Error 2000-0142 MSG: Hard Drive 1-Self Test unsuccessful STATUS: 79'.
I have installation disks as follows:
Dell Drivers and Utilities for XPS M1530, Dell Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT Reinstallation DVD, Dell Media Direct 3.5 for XPS Reinstallation Disk.
What can I do?

I was just checking my wife's older HP Pavilion dv9628nr running Vista Home Premium with 2 HDD's. I didn't even know it had 2 HDD's. I opened the case to make sure.
Below is a screenshot of Disk Management for this system. I have some questions:
1. Why is there an OS partition on each HDD?
2. Are 2 needed and can one be deleted?
