Dell :: XPS 1640 Heat Problems
Feb 16, 2010
I just had a tech come today to fix my xps's sound problems and he replaced the audio chip and it works etc. He also replaced my heat sink because of my heat problems but it hasn't actually improved the temps (if anything they are worse, and he installed the heatsink correctly etc and applied new paste).
My question is what to do now? My temps are around 75c on the cpu and about 65-70c on the gpu under load. Is this normal? Its more the fact that I get uncomfortable with the laptop on my lap than anything else.
What can I do? I am still under complete care warrant (100ish days left).

I'm thinking about purchasing a Studio XPS 16, but I hear all these stories about the heat.

So yes I have no cred and I am relatively new but I think we can all agree the direction of the heat vent on the XPS 16XX series needs to be changed to face downwards at least, so that the heat isn't dicipated directly onto the screen!
There doesn't seem anywhere available to add a secondary vent, so at least the primary vent needs to be improved.
I will send this to Dell_Bill_B as he requested in the throttling forum, and he said he would take this issue up at the next conference call!

I'm looking at both the Studio XPS 13 and the M1330 and I can get a xps13 better equipped for less. The only thing that is making me hesitant is the heat issues that are mentioned in nearly every review.
Does the heat issue affect performance?
Will it bother me? (I will have this on my lap and I'm a guy)
Should I just wait for a coupon that I can use on the m1330 so I dont have to worry about it?

I've read reviews mentioning heat is an issue for the XPS 16, and I've read other comments saying that's false.
Does anyone have hands on experience with this notebook? Does the speedfan app work with this computer

I was looking through some Studio XPS 16 reviews and one of the biggest complaints is heat. I don't really want to deal with heat that badly (I wish the fan was louder to compensate for the Heat).
But I am comparing a Studio XPS 16 to a Sony Vaio F series, and I was wondering how would the heat generated be with 8 GB of Ram, i7 720 QM processor, ATI 5730 and a 128 GB Solid State Drive? The Solid State Drive is supposed to generate 0 heat, so I figured that would mean that I would not have to deal with the heat problems. Also I would get the RGBLED screen.
On a less important note....with a 128 GB SSD and a 9 cell 85 whr battery what kind of battery life am I looking at with those stats at 20% brightness and only word documents?
I would like to grab a dell as I found out I may have a 15% discount there, but I don't want to have to deal with a hot/throttled computer.

I just bought this new laptop and it froze on me during inital set up and dell had to reimage it on the phone with me. Now that I have it where I can use the machine after about an hour of web surfing it seems like the bottom is pretty hot and near the vent is so hot you could not hold your hand there. I was thinking of calling dell back and talking to them about it. Are other people experiencing a lot of heat with this computer?

1. Has Dell recognized the problem and attempted to solve the problem?
2. Does anyone know if Dell is coming out with a new laptop model anytime soon?

I'm about to buy the XPS Studio 13 notebook and was hoping someone could make some clarifications for me about it. I've read a lot about the apparent design flaw in it that makes the monitor block the exhaust and thus the computer gets hot. I also know that the new BIOS version addresses this issue somewhat, but I'm a bit skeptical about it because a BIOS can only make the fans run more. The BIOS fix cannot correct the actual physical problem. Therefore, I'm a bit jittery about getting this computer, even though it's the one that best meets my spec requirements.
I would like to hear from those who have owned the XPS Studio 13 for at least 3-4 months and have used it for powerful stuff. What has your experience been like regarding the heat issue?
I've been warned that heat issues are not good for LED displays. This seems to me to be confirmed by the XPS 13 review posted at [url] where it is claimed that the heat issued damaged the bottom part of the guy's screen.

My mate's XPS Gen 2 w/ 7800GTX is experiencing issues in games - tearing and random black textures in GRAW 2, overheating => shutting down, and stuttering in Far Cry. We've tried different drivers to no avail, and after running Rthdribl for five minutes according to RivaTuner the GPU reaches 100c...so I'm thinking it's overheating.
So to the crux of the question...where on earth has IK9FanGUI gone? I was planning to use it to run the fans higher for some better cooling...but alas, I can't find it anywhere and the official site is down.

After hearing about the known heat issues with the nVidia 8400m card – I started monitoring the temperatures on my laptop using ‘SpeedFan’. The temperatures remain pretty consistent – albeit on the high side….
They are as follow:
GPU: 65C
Core 0: 55C
Core 1: 55C
These are averages – they really don’t get much higher (at least for too long). When the fan turns on they drop about 5C (and go back up when it turns off). I bought my laptop back in March (actually very happy with it) and have had no real problems (fingers crossed). I mostly use Office, surf the internet & watch movies – no real hardcore gaming for me…
Anyone think these temperatures are normal?
Should I call Dell?
Will all these video cards ultimately fail?

ive had the 1710 for two years,- but the heat issues are getting annoying.
right now with fangui just browsing
cpu load 10%
cpu temp 6969 °C
GPU 70 °C
fans rpm 4470
Have been using compressed air, cleaning the vents etc.
ive read about opening it up, but im guessing that voids the warranty. Have 2 year onsite left.
Did open a netbook to lube the fan, but im guessing its more difficult on the 1710. Also a problem if i get stuck at one point when putting it together.

I've had my XPS M1530 for a year now and I've recently gotten into overclocking, undervolting (going through this now), and monitoring my internal temperatures due to playing Oblivion, WoW, and AOC. Anyway, I checked the temperatures, and while idle my core temp sits at about 77C. With dual monitors (goes into 3D mode) it'll reach ~86C just surfing the internet. While gaming/overclocked it can easily reach 90-93C. I've gamed for LONG periods of time and it never seems to go above 93C ever, which is good b/c the max is somewhere around 100C (probably because of my cooling pad).
So I've looked online and everyone else seems to have temperatures of ~20C lower! What's going on and how come my laptop is this absurdly hot? Do any other users have temps this high? Have I had faulty hardware for a year now? I'm basically just wondering if there's any other suggestions out there or if I should call Dell asking them whats up with my laptop (I have a 4-year warranty).
Dell XPS M1530
Vista x64
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz
nVidia 8600M GT
4GB Ram
I just tried undervolting, and after changing the voltage it says "stress your CPU for 45minutes to make sure you don't get a blue screen of death or laptop crashes." It tested for a minute and RMClock (the program to undervolt) had to throttle the temps down b/c the CPU temps were getting over 95C.

I wish I had found this place before I purchased my new Dell, I had an old dell xps laptop maxed out and never had an issue with it and after 4 years sold it on ebay for 800.00. bad decision.
What to do what's done is done, my question is, On my old dell xps i use to use a program to monitor the temp and was able to bring it down 3 degrees by changing the thermal compound.
Before I do anything with this beautiful looking studio xps. I would like to know if and what people are using to monitor the temperature. I have installed speedfan and it seems ok but as we all know with dell systems they like to make it difficult for us to monitor the temps.
I checked the logs on speedfan and did not see anyone else posting settings for the studio xps .....

So i was using an emulator to play some old PSX games on my XPS M1530. I have a 2.4ghz C2D , 4gb ram, and a 8600gt. When i finished i checked my temps on my card just cause i was surious and it was at 93C (199F) when i checked.
That seems really high to me. I dont know if the fan is not kicking on or if the emulator is pushing my card to hard because i have never seen these kinds of temps before even after long Guild Wars sessions or any other of the number of games i play on this. Oh btw the card is not overclocked.

do you guys agree with this guy on the airflow?
Air gaps from Dell's stock setup of heat sinks
Now this was something I was not happy about. There is a large gap from the left fan (fan 1) to the CPU's heatsink from before. Then there was now a gap between the CPU and GPU's heatsinks. You can see in the picture above the screwdriver that is clearly visible (click the image for the full-res version).
In my history of custom cooling back in the 80s and 90s, there is one thing I learned that always remains constant: airflow is key. So my task would be to modify the airflow to force all air through the heatsinks by not allowing any to escape the airflow path through any gaps.
Aluminum Foil Shrouds
I accomplished this by using a few pieces of kitchen aluminum foil, scotch-tape, and additional AS5. There are multiple reasons for this. First for safety I evaluated the entire area and found no electrical components or circuit boards anywhere near this area. You do not want a piece coming loose and short-circuiting things!
Second is having aluminum foil allows the heat to transfer from one copper pipe to the other (just a tad though, too thin really to do a massive amount). That may not have been the best idea at first because CPUs usually run cooler than GPUs from my overclocking experience. But considering how freakin' high my CPU temps were before I even began, I could only see this as helping to offload some heat to the GPU's heatpipe - even if just a tad amount, anything had to help.
I also closed down the air escaping on the left side of fan's outlet to the CPU's heatsink, as well as the gaps between the two heatsinks. Now all air is forced by the fan trough the CPU heatsink, and then through the GPU's heatsink where it than only has room to exit the back vent.

I used speedfan to measure the heat. At around %10 CPU usage in Vista (no games running or anything, just Firefox and GTalk) it shows GPU @ 77C and CPU @ around 65 C. I think it's way too much but I'm not sure. Am I correct and if so what can I do about it? ...

I've had my XPS 1530 for about a year now and at school (running Vista Home Premium 32 bit) I dont remember having any issues with heat, and I could leave the laptop idle in my dorm room and come back hours later and it would be fine (NO AC or Fan blowing on it directly)
I came home and installed 64 bit version of Windows 7 but it began to run so much hotter, I installed all the right graphics card drivers from nVidia but still the touchpad and right before the keyboard were very very hot.
I just recently went back to that 32 bit version thinking it was the graphics card that was too hot but I opened the back panel of the laptop where the WLAN card is and realized it is that card that is below the touchpad and that is the component that is getting most hot. Normally, the GPU is around 65-70 degrees idel and i'm not sure if that is normal. The CPU is around 50-55 idle.
Is there anything I can do about this? I've tried disabling the wireless card with the switch and using Ethernet but it does not do much.

Where is the laptop intake air and where does it blow the heat out?
I just want to know so I can choose the proper Laptop Cooling Pad with fans. There are fans that suck in air and there are ones that blow air. Just want to choose the appropriate one so I don't end up killing the Dell.

I bought an XPS M1330 a couple months ago. It's been running great for the most part, but recently I've noticed it getting very hot (to the point of throttling the CPU).
I downloaded CoreTemp and found that it was hitting 100C at minor load (playing MP3s, surfing web). This was BIOS A11.
I updated the BIOS to A15 last night and it seemed to help, but it's still idling at 60C and hitting about 75 when playing MP3s. It still hits 100 under Orthos load.

I have a 1558 on its way and amfinding out quite a bit of issues with shutdown and heating on Studio 15.
I have not heard much on shutdown or heat issues with the 1458. So is 1458 not have these issues?
Should I instead get 1458? I can live with the 720p screen if this will result in avoiding heating issues and shutdowns.

I was playing BF2 yesterday for about 45 minutes online when suddenly it froze.
I was forced to hold the power button to shut it off. When I tried to turn it back on the lights flashed and it shut off. I tried to start it again and the lights flashed and it shut down again. At this point I felt like . SoI unplugged all usb devices and the power cord let it sit for a couple minutes and tried again. This time it booted to a black screen that said your system shutdown due to excessive heat error code #MO44. I opened up the laptop removed the fans and blew out the dust from the machine. The problem is it wasn't really that hot. I know it has been hotter in the past while gaming. Anyway I am going to get a cooler for when I'm gaming. I know there have been threads here before but searching was no real help. I am looking for the most efficient cooler out there for my 1710. I reallly don't care what it looks like as long as it does what it's supposed to do.
I'm running Vista Ultimate and I8KFANGUI my peak idle temps are
CPU: 50C
GPU: 59C
RAM: 51C

I am still having problems with FPS drops in games, I have tried everything and have come to the conclusion it must be heat related.
By running HWMonitor I can see the sensor for my GPU has reached 94c!!!
I think at this temp its downlocking and causing my FPS drops.
Could anyone else with a 1555 run hwmonitor (its free) then play a demanding game for a while and check the ACHI temps?

I really should be writing my english essay instead, but after all this time, I'm better at writing forum posts about my laptop's massive heating issues.
On a good day, my 4 month old XPS M1530 32bitVista Home Premium laptop will run at about 65 degrees celcius. From what I've read, this is a normal temperature for the laptop.
Note that my fan used to run, but only does sporadically now. I don't know what triggers it on or off .....

I got a defective C640, completely dead, no charging and a charged battery did not work either.
I found a bad solder joint at one of the DC filters located under the PCB just under the DC-jack, easy to resolder . Found also that the videoboard was loose. Now it is working.
But then I had a strange problem, when I put down the cpu heat sink the fan stopped, and when I just lift it a litte bit it started!?
I could not solve this until I installed the speedfan program and marked the Dell square under configure > options and rebooted?
Then I have a leftover, a plastic piece L-shaped 2+3 cm with an hole at one end,
