My laptop was working fine this morning. I took a nap and when I went to use the computer again, it can't find the wireless network. The network icon in the system tray is all gray bars with a red X through them. When I hover over it, the pop up says, "Wireless Network Connection Radio Disabled." Only two things could have changed: my daughter might have used the computer (using a non-administrator account) and Comcast cable might have gone out.
I'm using:
Studio 1458 Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Version 6.1.7601 Dell (Broadcom) Wireless 1520 Wireless-N WLAN Mini-Card Netgear wireless router, Windows Firewall, Avast free anti-virus (have been using all three for years)
This is what I've tried:
-Verified that cable TV and phone are still working. -Reset modem and then router then restarted laptop. (This is what I do any time the cable goes out and it usually works.) -Verified that iPad and iPhone can see network and use it. -Plugged laptop in through router and can see and use network.
Therefore it has to do with the wireless.
-In Network and Sharing Center, clicked set up a new connection or network and selected connect to the Internet > wireless. No connections available. -Checked system restore to see if there's a restore point recently that would indicate my kid installed something. (Child of course denies using computer. ) Last restore point was Windows update five days ago. -Restarted in safe mode, was unable to see wireless network. -Verified that Device Manager sees wireless adaptor and says it is working. -Deleted and reinstalled driver in safe mode. -Deleted and reinstalled driver from latest downloaded version. This also deleted all existing network connections listed under manage wireless networks. -Turned off wireless phones. -Disabled LAN adaptor and retried all of the above. -Tried FN F2 which pulls up an image of two radio towers. The one on the right, that looks like it's a tower without a signal, is highlighted and has a circle with a slash through it over top of it. -Ran through troubleshooter numerous times. -Restarted computer numerous times during this testing. -Went into Windows Mobility Center to turn wireless on but button is grayed out.
In Windows Mobility Center clicked on "launch" under radio control options and selected All the Radios (WiFi was the only one not grayed out).
In Windows Mobility Center, found that the above was still an option so it appears WMC doesn't see that they're turned on.
-Updated the firmware on wireless router. -Update driver for Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptor -Manually added wireless network through Network and Sharing Center. -Verified my antivirus software is working and is up to date. -Changed security options on router so there was no security. (Of course changed it back.)
How to update the firmware on the wireless adaptor card if there is any.
I still have a gray wireless network connection icon in the system tray with a red X through it. The pop up still says wireless network connection radio disabled. I am unable to connect to the Interenet through the wireless, even in safe mode. This is my work computer (I own my own business)Â and in order to use the wired connection I have to sit on the floor in a corner. It's very inconvenient, not to mention uncomfortable. (My child does not usually have access to my computer but our home computer is down and I let her use it a few days ago and forgot to turn off the guest account.
My wireless card stopped working and I get the message that the radio is disabled. F2 is supposed to turn it on,but no longer does so. Tried reinstalling the wireless card driver, but that didn't work. I am told that I probably have a software conflict. How to find and correct the conflict?
While I would love to be able to go with the Studio XPS 16 (16470) it is just out of my price range. Here is what I'm trying to decide to pull the trigger on:
Dell Studio 15 (1558) INTEL® CORE™ i5-520M (2,4 GHZ, 4 THREAD, TURBO BOOST FINO A 2,93 GHZ, CACHE 3 MB) Memoria SDRAM DDR3 a doppio canale da 4.096 MB [2x2.048 MB], 1333 MHz ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570 Graphics Card Disco rigido SATA da 500 GB (5.400 rpm) Schermo widescreen Full HD da 15,6" (1.920 x 1.080) WLED con TrueLife DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD) with DVD Burn software Intel® Wireless LAN 6200 2x2 802.11a/b/g/n card (EUR) Garanzia limitata di 1 anno: Ritiro e restituzione 1 anno di supporto garanzia a domicilio, inclusi sabato e orari serali Batteria principale agli ioni di litio a 6 celle da 56 Wh Webcam integrata da 2,0 megapixel Colore Blu notte con finitura satinata Nessun supporto per danni accidentali Backup online DataSafe 2 GB, 1 anno McAfee® SecurityCentre, abbonamento per 15 mesi, Italiano Alimentatore CA da 90 W Total Cost with IVA (value tax) and Delivery is €829,36
I will have to try to call them and order rather than order via the website directly as I want the Windows 7 Home Premium install and all the accompanying software to be in English (I live in Italy and that's the reason for the italian info in the configurations).
Opinions are greatly appreciated. I have read about the throttling issues associated with the i5s and i7s and I should not fall into those areas as I am not a gamer. What are everyone's thoughts? Go ahead and pull the trigger?
I got my new laptop last week, arrivied with BIOS version A03 loaded so I immediately flashed it with A04. All was working nicely for a few days and then suddenly I've been experiencing random shutdowns.
After reading through every thread I can find on the topic, most people seem to think that A04 fixed the shutdown/overheating/fan problem but it would not seem to be the case for me.
Has anyone else had similar issues? I'm gonna give Dell a call tomorrow and get the low-down but would be nice to hear from anyone in the same boat.
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their Studio 1558 orders? I ordered on 23/02 and the EDD was 09/03, but it's now been put back to the 01/04!
The only custom components I requested were the FullHD WLED screen and the backlit keyboard. I have to say I'm not very impressed!
I am editing some AVCHD home videos using 1558(spec in my signature). I noticed when I do that my CPU cores rempain between 45-52C range but my GPU shoots to 64C and stays there.
I am concerned about the GPU as I understand the only fan in the 1558 is on the CPU so GPU is not getting any direct cooling.
My question is if there is a way to lower GPU workload and put it on CPU for my video editing .....
Is anyone else having same problem as i'am ?Just go my laptop from dell 2days ago charged battery turned system on and in less than 30mins it shut down as if the power was disconnected, same thing happened same day but about 3hrs this time of use then it shut down again
I have started this separate thread to get more visibility (for now) but this can be merged into the master 1558 thread eventually.
I have the laptop for 1 week now
Pros: •Great screen, 1080p screen is easily the best thing about the laptop. Very bright and sharp.
•I5-520m is quite fast. Good enough for most task and even some gaming, I ran the beta of Starcraft for a dew mins and it ran at mid to high settings for most (I have 4570 GPU)
•6200N is a good card and is much faster than the g card I was using in Vostro. Connects to the router in about 10 secs if I turn it off and then turn it on while laptop is on.
•9 cell battery performance is decent, I think I get about 4 hours of use with light to middle load of use. With very light use I should be well over 4 hours.
Cons:
•Slot DVD player is noisy, makes one loud clicking noise when every you boot the laptop. Sometimes there are two clicks.
•Froze one time when I booted up one morning, had to reboot again by holding the power button. Not sure what happened there.
•Biggest issue is heat for me, coming from a 14” Vostro I thought this will produce less heat but it seems to produce the same amount. The touchpad is quite hot to the touch as well as the bottom area just below the laptop. These external temps do not fluctuate much with the change in the core temps, at least that is what it seems to me. My core temps have not been too bad. 35-38C idle, 40-46C with light use (internet surfing), ~50-55C watching youtube etc. 70-74C when stressed 100% for 5 minutes. So what can be done about heat as that is my biggest concern and I have to decided if I want to keep this laptop. I opened the bottom cover and saw the CPU is smack under it. CPU is quite small and the heatsink as well. I could not see where the fan is but it does not seem close to the CPU so no wonder you cannot get heat to get out. Has anyone tired put a larger heatsink over the CPU or put thermal paste?
•Fan Control is very poor but I am optimistic that eventually DELL can update bios to address that. Fan turning on and off every minute is not acceptable.
•Has anyone noticed some light vibration around the touch pad area, when you put your hand to feel it? My laptop seems to have it and it is the highest close to the touch pad area. Not sure if it is the fan or CPU or the DVD player.
Anyway need 1558 users advice as I would like to make the decision on this laptop if I want to keep it. I got it as refurb so the price is quite good for the specs but I do not want it to die after a year and a half.
Just received my Studio 15 today and it's a nice looking machine but the fan seems to run more often than I'd like. I've updated the BIOS to A03, the most current, but it doesn't seem to resolve the issue.
I've been having some throttling issues with my 1558 for a past few days. I've been using it in the us but i'm on vacation now n i'm working on a 220V supply! Does that affect the performance of the adapter in any way?
My config is a core i5 520m,4GB ddr3, ati 4570 512mb,1080p screen.
I was playing Burnout Paradise n my system slowed down after 10 min of gameplay! I noticed that the CPU multiplier was frozen at 9. I really dunno y that happened! I've been playing the same game for hours together back home and it din seem to affect it in any way!
I tried updating it the latest BIOS that came out (A05) and that din help either. It also happened with a few other games as well.
I tried using throttlestop to just confirm that it was the CPU. The games was playing fine for 15 min wen the system just shut off!!
So I just tried to play for one last time with throttlestop off and it was actually fine till I got a critical error msg n my screen wasn't showing color properly!!
Have I fried my graphic card somehow?? Or is my adapter just not strong enuf to handle the load n hence throttling the system??
I tried updating my drivers to v10.4 N it kept saying INF not found n I had to install it indirectly.
Any way to find out if I've screwed up the graphic card?? I'm scared to push it with a game and screw up the system!!
I got a new Dell Studio 1558 a week or so back. Ever since I got it, I feel a constant vibration to the left of the touchpad.
After doing some research and asking some questions, apparently the Seagate 7200 RPMs have this issue. I confirmed it was the HD by putting the HD to sleep and the vibration would stop.
The best solution to me seems to replace the Seagate with a WD 5400 RPM HD. I have been looking at their Scorpio Blue for this: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...4&sku=A2436199
Will it work with the 1558? And, how do I go about setting up the laptop after replacing the HD?
I don't have any important documents that need to be transferred, but I am guessing I will have to use the Dell DVDs to setup Windows?

1080p monitor is a must unless you need large text. The 1080p screen is perfectly fine for all use. I thought it might be too hard to read, but actually find it to be perfect given how crisp the image is.
Build quality is good, not as good as the XPS but still decent. At work I use a Lenovo T500 that has a magnesium skeleton under the lid and it very solidly built .....
Trying to decide between the 1647 and the 1558 - obviously, the 1558 is substantially cheaper.

The differences I've noted -ATI HD 4570 vs ATI HD 46705400rpm vs 7200rpm hard drive - I've asked if that can be upgraded"Edge-to-edge" screen - how much difference does this make?Appearance of the machine, obviously Have I missed anything? I've not found enough so far to justify the price difference.
I'm looking at both the Studio XPS 13 and the M1330 and I can get a xps13 better equipped for less. The only thing that is making me hesitant is the heat issues that are mentioned in nearly every review.
Does the heat issue affect performance?
Will it bother me? (I will have this on my lap and I'm a guy)
Should I just wait for a coupon that I can use on the m1330 so I dont have to worry about it?

I'm obviously excited about receiving it, however.... after close to a week... it's still in "pre-production."
I've called a few times. First time I was told "It could take up to 48 hours to get out of pre-production and into in-production."
Fair enough. 48 hours later it was still in pre-production, so I called back and they told me it could be a payment issue. So I called the verification department and they told me everything was 100% good to go.
Anyway, different people telling me different things, finally I landed on some honesty. A representative told me that the problem is that there is a part on back-order and so that is why it hasn't moved into production yet. I'm guessing it's the processor, what do you guys think?
Anyway, the original delivery date was projected as February 4, 2010. The guy on the phone today said that I should expect the order to be moved into production within 48 hours (I'm not so sure I believe this) and that the delivery date will probably move to February 9, 2010.
I have absolutely no problem with this, part not in stock = no problem. My issue is, different reps telling me different stories. If it comes down to waiting till February 9 and I get my laptop then, I am fine with that, but if this drags on farther, I would rather cancel my order and purchase from another company.
What do you guys think? Also, has anybody actually received their 1558 yet? What do you think of it?
Had this Studio 1558 for about a week now. It's been mostly good, except it's been freezing for no good reason every so often. I'm not getting error messages, BSODs, automatic restarts, or any of that. The screens just stop responding.
I suspected it was a bad Win7 install, so I wiped and reinstalled Win7HPx64. Still froze. Went back to a single-monitor setup, still froze. Tried updating to the Catalyst 10.04 drivers, still froze. Disabled Powerplay, still froze. Changed AV/Firewall and uninstalled a pile of crap, still froze. Installed XP, then Ubuntu, still froze.
Odd thing? Nothing in the event viewer to indicate a crash, other than the fact that a kernel power error shows up because I force a shutdown. I've yet to find a .dmp file anywhere that would indicate an actual BSOD. Fan never spun up, CPU monitors and logs don't show any sudden spike or drop in processor activity. Think the 4570 is busted?
*edit* just recalled, I've also changed power settings so the CPU can't throttle, been monitoring all 8 cores, ran off battery and off ac, all to no effect.
happens whether i'm streaming video via hulu desktop, just browsing webpages, running virus scans, or just doing mostly nothing. ran the gamut of dell diagnostics, but nothing.
I don't know what it is, or maybe its just the way the system works... But basically, but something is constantly on even when I just have the laptop on with a few IE windows, you can especially feel it just to the left of the touchpad. From time to time, I will also hear the the noise coming from it and it till slow down, then start up again. I mean, its not a big issue, but is something wrong with the laptop? This happens when the CPU load is as low as just 5%, temperatures around 42-45 degrees Celsius.
Just got a 1558 in replacement for a 1525. I popped the back cover to install my upgraded Wifi, and add the WWAN and Bluetooth... No extra mini PCI slots for the BT or WWAN - There is a sticker that says WWAN but no connector or wires.... Since my 1525 has these options ( I did not buy the BT or WWAN card from Dell ) do i ask for another system that has these on-board? Is Dell obligated to provide one that is capable even though in their records i did not have BT or WWAN.
