HP/Compaq :: CES 2010 And Envy 17 Inch

Dec 27, 2009

Can we expect HP to be introducing updated laptops at CES? I am mainly intrested in the HP Envy 17 inch, think we will hear anything about it (if not when)? I want a new laptop (updating from my xps 1530), and will like a 17 inch screen instead of a 15 inch screen and thats why i am waiting for the envy to come out with a 17 version,

Apple :: Late 2008 Unibody 15 Inch MBP Vs Mid 2010 Equivalent

Apr 19, 2010

I just wanted people's opinions on how they compare the two model lines, and whether or not they would make the upgrade. The specs of my MBP are:

C2D 2.53 Ghz
500GB 7200RPM HDD
4GB DDR3 1066 MHZ RAM
512MB 9600mGT w/ 9400m Integrated Graphics

Performance wise, I havent been disappointed with the laptop, but one of the main drawbacks I see in the machine is its battery life - Apple has taken strides in improving battery life over 2009-2010, and its kinda annoys me that I'm stuck with the battery I have now.

I commute a lot to/from school, work on the bus/train, and have to use my laptop in places where power outlets are not readily available (some lecture rooms). Realistically, I get about 3-3.5 Hours with screen brightness on minimum, wifi and bluetooth turned of, and doing some basic word processing, as well as reading pdf's.......

Apple :: Compared Anti Glare Screens On 15 Inch And 17 Inch

Mar 21, 2010

I had a chance to stop by at apple store today, and compared the anti glare screens on both 15 inch and 17 inch models. To my surprise, the 15 inch one was much brighter than 17 inch one. I made sure that both had max brightness settings, and it was clear that 15 inch one was superior. maybe this 17 inch display model was defect? anyone has opposite experience? (btw, I hate seeing myself and losing focus because of reflective glassy screens)

Dell :: Return Inspiron 15.6 Inch For 17 Inch

Sep 16, 2009

I bought a new Inspiron last week and got it yesterday - I am happy with it except feel a bit annoyed as I though wide screen of 15.6 would be the same as 15.4 normal screen in terms of height, but with a slightly wider screen.

It turns out that actually it is half an inch shorter! And 768 pixels high does not seem enough.

I looked into the 17inch model and for only £25 more I can get the same speced laptop.

Does anyone know how much I might get charged for returning the 15 inch to get the 17 inch (it has been within 21 days) ....

Apple :: Exchanging 17 Inch MBP With 15 Inch MBP

Mar 22, 2009

Apple will mail me a new 17 inch MBP unibody(Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66, 4G memory, 320G hard drive) and I found out that I like the 15 inch MBP unibody more (lighter yet the same powerful machine). Is there anyway that I can take it back to apple store and exchange for a 15 inch MBP?

Apple :: Old MBP 15 Inch Vs Unibody MBP 13 Inch

Jul 16, 2009

I just got my sisters old macbook pro which is a late 2007 model with the following specs:

15.4 inch LED screen (1440 x 900)
160 gb 5400 rpm HD
2 gb of ram (the standard that it came with) - 667 mhz ddr2 sdram
GPU: nVidia Geforce 8600M GT with 256mb
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz (T7700)
Superdrive: 4x DVD+R DL writes, 8x DVD+/-R read/write, 4x DVD+/-RW writes, 24x CD-R, and 10x CD-RW recording
No applecare left on it
Condition: Very minor wear and tear, but its in excellent condition because its been in a speck plastic case from day one with all the protective casing features below and kept in a neoprene sleeve when on the go
Battery: there are two, one is absolute shot (as in it lasts about 1 minute before i get a low battery warning), the other is brand new and hasnt been opened yet
Accessories: it also came with a brand new (not even opened) battery, a full body speck plastic case, rubber keyboard cover, trackpad film cover, and rubbery/felt like cover for the part below the keyboard and trackpad buttons, oh and a 15 inch neoprene sleeve...my sister is sort of a freak about protecting it............

HP/Compaq :: NEWDV6 2010 User Review

May 31, 2010

Long time lurker finally decided to join, best to start of my post count with a lengthy review on HP's new DV6 line.

I’d like to give people interested in HP's new dv6 line a heads up. This came about mainly due to the lack of reviews anywhere on the internet. Anyone with a dv6, feel free experience on the dv6.

Last weekend i purchased a HP DV6 3032tx with specs found here:

HP Pavilion dv6-3000 Entertainment Notebook PC series Home & Home Office

I went into JB HI-FI Australia buying a 13" mac and ending up getting this mainly due to the value, at a similar price as the dv6 was purchased at JB's cost price.

This has been my experience with the product so far

Design
The third generation of the dv6 line has been completely revamped by removing the numeric pad (I personally hate the num pads), and adding a nice chicklet keyboard with some quick launch buttons. One stand out factor is the thickness. It' still 30mm thick however the actually visible thickness is less than 1" thanks to some beautiful tapered edge design. The aluminium/magnesium shell with black keyboard is very mac like, and reminds me of HP's premium ENVY line of notebooks. On the i7 models only the palm rests and lids have a nice looking imprint finish which is very subtle and maintains its professional look. When the system is on, a HP logo glows white on the bottom left hand corner of the lid...

HP/Compaq :: HP TX2March 2010 New N-trig Drivers

Mar 4, 2010

Looks like HP have come through with the new 4-point n-trig drivers on the HP support page, version 2.239A.

Upgrade was painless and it would seem at this point that the following errors and their fixes have been implemented under Windows 7 64bit.

- palm rejection fixed, dual mode works like auto now perfectly
- pen support is very accurate and has no lag (still no ps pressure support tho)
- 4-point multitouch working and very accurate
- no more hot spots
- no more random clicks
- can access start bar with touch on desktop now
- calibration when changing modes seems perfect

HP/Compaq :: Best 14 To 15 Inch HP

Feb 13, 2009

Looking for a 13 to 15 inch laptop with a better than just good graphics card. I remember the dv5t coming with a 9600m gt but looks like HP pulled a failure card and now they have weak chips in the 15 inch models. I was hoping to keep it somewhat lightweight meaning under 6 lbs, but not sacrifice gameplay while it's plugged in and a decent battery life for mobile word processing and web surfing (no gameplay).

HP/Compaq :: How Important Is DVI / HDMI For A 24 Inch Display

Jun 12, 2009

I'm trying to decide between a HP 6930p (14.1") or 8530p (15.4"). I would prefer a 14 inch laptop. However, the 6930p only has a VGA port; the 8530p has an HDMI port. Probably 50% of the time its in use, it will be connected to a 24 inch display (a Dell 2408wfp).

I am concerned about the difference in picture quality between the VGA versus the digital connection? In practice, how much difference am I likely to notice? I will be using it mainly for office type work.

HP/Compaq :: Replace 1.8-inch Hardisk For 2530p

Feb 20, 2009

I just bought a 2530p, with 1.8-inch 120GB hardisk. The partition is assigned as below.

- 101GB for C:
- 9GB for D: (HP_Recovery )
- 1GB for F: (HP_Tools)

I would like to replace existing 120GB HD with larger one, and would like to ask some question.

1. what is the largest size of 1.8-inch hardisk for 2530p? I refer to "Service and maintenance information" manual, the hardisk size seems only up to 160GB, could I installed 260GB or even larger hardisk?

2. Is it neceessary to keep the partition of HP_Tools or HP_recovery?
(if I delete the partition 'HP_Tools' or 'HP_recvoery', can the OS be booted up?)

Apple :: Macbook Pro Mid-2010 CPU & GPU

Apr 29, 2010

We have all been curious about exactly what is going on under the hood in the new Macbook Pros. It would appear that Apple is indeed underclocking the GPU a bit, at least as reported from GPUz:

I also fired up CPUz and was pleased to the see that the i5 turbo mode appears alive and well, at least in Windows 7:

This is all from the base model, off the shelf 15" Macbook Pro.

I would love to see this thread turn into results from other new machines so download CPUz and GPUz!

Apple :: 2010 Macbook Pro 15" I5/2.4 First Impressions

Apr 15, 2010

I don't have time for a full review because one of the reasons I jumped so quickly into this new notebook is that I am on a deadline. However there are a few first observations I don't want to forget about, should anyone be interested in a more complete review.

A little history first. I have been a Mac user for the past 20 years. I grew up with them, have been responsible for them in an IT capacity and have made a living generating content from them. I know the platform well. I am however not the type of guy to put all his eggs in one basket and also routinely use Windows, mostly for gaming, and Linux, mostly for serving.

The point is, I make my living around the Mac.

Purchase and Arrival.
I made the decision to buy after 6 hours of spec shopping. I called around to the local Best Buy (you never know until checking) and the closest Apple store, which for me is 120 miles away. Neither had them in stock, but they both at least knew what I was talking about. The Apple store didn't have an ETA, but expected them within the week. That wasn't fast enough for me this time, so I ordered directly from Apple. This was Tuesday night at 5pm. Wednesday at 2:30PM, I took delivery. Nice. The outer packaging was a plain brown box. Inside, the standard Mac packaging with nothing but the notebook, a power adapter, and a simple folder with barebones manuals and the OS DVDs. Good presentation, but not a lot of goodies............

Apple :: SSD And Optibay Install In Mid-2010 15" Unibody

Apr 26, 2010

I recently purchased a new base model 15" Macbook Pro with the firm intention of upgrading the main drive to a SSD. Historically, there has been some issues with a do-it-yourself upgrade to SSD using Mac hardware and I happy to report that I have had no issues, save those caused by myself in the doing the swap.

I decided the best course of action was to use a SSD for my main application and OS drive, and use a standard 2.5" mechanical HD for my files. The downside is, of course, you lose your internal Superdrive. However, as I was contemplating this, I realized that I rarely use my optical drive outside of software installs. It then became an easy choice. Of course, you can always just swap the standard internal drive for a SSD, but space and cost quickly become deciding factors. Keep in mind that if you plan to install Windows 7, you need at least 20GB of space just for it, before any other Windows software. Snow Leopard takes around 8GB and some of the higher end software can take gigabytes on their own (The Final Cut Studio suite alone takes around 50GB).

After a ton of research with some conflicting information I decided on the Crucial M225 128GB SSD. It uses the Indilinx Barefoot controller with 64MB of cache and is price competitive at around $325. The Kingston V-series is cheaper, but uses a modified J-micron controller (meh - sorry J-micron, too much history there). Another choice, and one I nearly made, is a Corsair series drive. Note that apparently the Nova series has some issues with the Macintosh notebook line, so the P series will be your best bet there. Of course, you could go for the gold and choose an Intel based SSD. Most Mac guys seem to have the best luck with these drives, but I decided I like the price/performance of the Crucial better..............
