HP/Compaq :: Envy 15 Temps
May 2, 2010
HP's envy 15 line with the ATI 5830 GPU (i7-720/820). I do have one big concern however, and that is heat. Could anyone post their max GPU / CPU / HD temps they usually get while running an intensive game / benchmark?

I have a dv5 that recently decided it didn't want to go to sleep when I closed the lid. I checked the settings to make sure they hadn't accidentally been changed, but it's still set to sleep. I have not made any other changes or installed any additional software. how I can get it back to sleep?
I'm using HWMonitor to monitor temps, and it does not show my hd temp. However, I am concerned about the temps it does show (THRM? and processor).
My dv5 used to run at an average of 80C, and saw temps as high as 95C while streaming video. I sent it in for repairs and the temps have since dropped, but still seem high (Currently 50C, high of 86C while streaming video). Should I send it back for repair- again?

While playing GTA4 for a while on my DV5 I notice my temps are kind of high. The CPU hits 75 and 73 for each core and my GPU hits 70. Are these temps low enough to consistently play the game or do I need to find better cooling solutions?

i got into reading about copper mod and from that thread i was pointed in the direction of undervolting thread.... well i decided to try it out
i read like the 1st 15 pages or so and decided to give it a try... downloaded orthos and HWmonitor, did a 100% cpu load for 20 minutes to find my max temp at load and i had 69*C highest on my core#1 (core#0 always seems to be cooler by 2-4*C almost all the time

The dv6000 I own had some known heating issues. I am already on the 2nd hard drive as I think the last one simply got fried. The laptop in general performs well. I am close to buying a new Sager gaming laptop but am thinking of holding off till early 2010. I'm a little worried about another overheating issue. Aside from work, every Sunday I stream NFL football at 720p. I live in Peru and only come to the US a couple times per year. I either need to buy a new laptop in the next month or likely hold off till April or so.
What are your thoughts on my hardware temps? When I took this screen capture I had a couple java application open (my typical work environment) and was streaming 720p flash based video for over an hour. Are these temps OK?
I should point out I now use a fan cooling pad since I replaced the hard drive. I also have some drivers from HP that supposedly addressed some of the heating issues.

I have a question about my core and gpu temps. I've recently installed my own custom cooler and I'd like to find out if my max temps under heavy load will be ok for the summer.
My room temp is about 85F maybe a little less. I doubt it will get any hotter this summer because when the 110F temps come along I'll have an AC running to keep it at 85F.
After about 1 hour of heavy duty gameplay, my temps (under the max heading) in HardwareMonitor were as follows:
62C CPU Cores
74C GPU
If that's as hot as they get all summer, I'm thinking that should be ok, but I'd like to hear from the rest of you. Please let me know. Thanks.
Also, if you can let me know a MAX/Caution/Be Aware set of temps so I know that I need to let my notebook cool down if it hits those temps,

When my laptop was new, while gaming the max temp use to be around 60C. Now it's around 70C. Why is this? Due to dust collecting in the vents and fan?

Alright, so to start off I'll just say that I love the DV2. I bought the dual core version loaded when it first went up for customization at the HP site. I have, however, noticed that it can run a tad hot.
When I first got it, without a cooler, the CPUs usually went from between 41c-45c from light usage, and the GPU from between 51c-55c. Even when propping the back up I only saw a drop of 1c total. I bought a small cooler for it and saw a fairly good drop. The temps of the CPU where down to 36c-39c and the gpu was down to 45c-49c with both sometimes even going lower depending on how much the AC in the house was on.
I did try some gaming on this, playing some HL2. The CPU got to 60c at the highest and the GPU also only got to about 60c while on the cooling pad.
So, a few days ago I updated my BIOS to the latest on for the DV2 from the HP site. I noticed right away that my temps where higher. The temps while on my cooler where the same as they used to be without it, and with the cooler off the GPU was getting up to 60c while at idle. I tried a few things, like setting the GPU to low power mode with the Catalyst controls, but that didn't help.
Not sure what to do I noticed this morning that I hadn't gotten SP2 for Vista yet. So I decided to get it in hopes that it would help.. now my DV2 is even hotter. On the cooling pad my CPU was at around 60c and GPU was at 65c while at idle. I've had it on all day, with all the vents in my room open and the AC up high and the lowest it's gotten is to 50c for the CPU and 55 for the GPU.

I was given a dv6113us 2 weeks ago for free since it didn't work. It had the typical no video boot problem. I paid someone on ebay to fix the laptop for me for 80 bucks . Hp said I was out of warranty so they couldn't help me. The guy on eBay told me that he would basically reball and resolder my geforce 6150 chip on there. I sent it in last week, and I just got it back in the mail yesterday and all is working great except for some random freezing at times. The laptop will freeze for a minute every couple of minutes. The hard drive just stops reading out of nowhere, then starts again. Its a brand new hard drive. I was thinking this had to do with heat somewhere in the system.
I downloaded Core Temp and found that the CPU was running pretty cool on both cores.
Around 40c with medium load. Then I downloaded GPU-Z and saw these insane temps! I couldn't believe my eyes! My GPU temps hover around from 97 degrees celsius to 109 degrees celsius.
Before I sent in the laptop I tried taking it apart and was stuck at the top cover. Something was holding it together by the track pad. I almost ripped the cover off but decided to give up and put it back together. Now that I found the post from MrFoo, NOW I know what was holding me back!

i set up this thread to compare the temps between windows 7 and windows vista. i googled for it but there's no comparison chart. please feel free to contribute.
windows vista:
idle: 62-65
under load: 77-85
windows 7:
idle: 55-60
under load: 70-80
i see that windows 7 runs noticeably cooler than windows vista. Please post your details so that other users can have an idea about what to choose if they decide to bootcamp windows.

beats edition as compared to the envy 15 version.
1. What reason is there for the 800 dollar difference in price other than the beats headphones?
2.Does the back of the case only have the beats logo on it or is there any type of laser etching like on the original envy.

I've got a great offer for buying a used 1st generation Envy 15, dirt cheap.
However, I was wondering if heat management and battery life has improved with driver- and BIOS updates over time.
In short, has any of the points of criticism that the Envy originally received been improved with driver and BIOS updates?

I'm shopping for laptops right now and I'm pretty much stuck between these two. My main question for the 14 is will it be able to do full hd? I know 1920x1080 is a bit much to ask for on a 14.5" screen but I haven't been able to find a solid answer for this question. The 14 has more features and the internal cd drive is a plus, but not a dealbreaker for the 15 since the cd drive isn't used too much. Taking out price, which one would be a better buy?

I have a couple of questions about the Envy v2. I'm certain the answers are somewhere in the massive owner's thread but it's way too long to want to go through at this point.
My questions are:
1) Audio quality of external speakers. Is there enough bass in them? Do they sound "tin-y"?
2) Noise from the fan when the GPU is in high use. How loud is the fan? Has anyone put a decibel meter to it?
3) Temp of the GPU. My Studio 15 is hitting a high of 70c when running and was wondering how the newer ATI is.

The first I heard about the Envy line was that it was a gorgeous laptop with a great display and above-average speakers. However, it was fundamentally flawed with a horrible trackpad and overheating issues(present in the 13, but further aggravated in the 15). After the spectacular fail of a release, I dropped the Envy out of consideration.
To the present, I've recently started looking at a huge array of laptops and have taken the Envy into consideration again. From what I've heard, the Envy 15 is in its second generation(I need a full-HD laptop and won't be considering the Envy 13). It now comes equipped with a i5 processor and the HD5830.............

How does the 1/6 GHz processor stack up against the more traditional core duo? Is it roughly equal to a 2.53 GHz processor? I love windows 7 and might trade my Macbook Pro for one.

I have been reading about the Envy 15 (as I'm getting closer to buying it). However, one thing that concerns me is regarding the temperatures.
So, how hot does it get?
Most likely, I'll be getting the dual SSD rig. For anyone who owns that, how hot does it get for you?
My setup is looking like the i7-820, 8GB RAM, 5830, dual-SSD. I have thought about going to the 16GB RAM option as well, though I doubt I need it.

I need to connect my HP Envy 15 to my TV`s VGA port, and I'm looking for the best alternative. This is because I only get a stretched picture when I connect it to the DVI port through a HDMI > DVI-adapter.
HP has an official HDMI -> VGA adapter. What's people experience with that? Perfect? Problems? I see that Envy 15 is not listed as a supported model for it, but does that matter?

I came across an Envy, and it looked really light and cool.
The Envy 15 seems to have good specs, with the 5830 and i5's or i7's, 4 sodimms (right?) 1080p screen.
The Envy 14, however, seems to be a bit weak..
Is there a special feature in the Envy 14 that I better wait for? or, is the Envy 15 still a reasonable machine that I could aim for in my trade?
I can't really find the part that explains the refreshes of the Envy 15..
I really want to know if the Envy 14 is a different league than the Envy 15, or if they are in the similar league so that I should wait for the 14 model.

I'm already playing with the clock speeds i didn't bother with a full reinstall. i got rid of all the bloatware, fixed the stupid fn key function keys thing, and it runs fine.
i didn't get the 10.3 preview driver due to a lot of instabilities i keep hearing about. gonna wait for it to come out. i'm still using the original driver version that came with the computer. i got amd gpu tools, and oced to 520/1050 just to start. so far my temps never went above 70C how do i keep this clock speed when i restart? also, i notice the default settings downclock the gpu when it's not doing anything intensive, and they go up to 500/800 when they need to. if i lock in my oc when i restart (if i can), will it still downclock when it doesn't need the speed?

The prices of the Envy Line have dropped and the Envy 15 now features i5-520M + ATI HD5830. If that implies switchable graphics than the battery life problems of the Envy are gone
