Lenovo T400 / T500 :: ThinkPad T540p / Unable To Select UEFI / Legacy Boot In BIOS / Startup
Aug 7, 2014
I bought a ThinkPad 540p that comes with preloaded Windows 8.1. As I want to dual boot the machine I tried to select the Legacy Boot option in the BIOS/Startup tab, but I can't do anything as the option UEFI/Legacy Book is greyed out and locked in "UEFI Only". Below it there is an option called: -CSM Support that is also greyed out and selected as [No]. (below these options there is a little note with an asterisk saying "Unselectable for Secure Boot").
How can I enable the UEFI/Legacy Boot option again in order to dual boot the computer? I want to be able to boot from USB or from the CD Drive.

Once again, my Lenovo Thinkpad 430 (running under Windows 7) is persistently selecting whatever the pointer is sitting over. This happens periodically, and it drives me crazy. I've been able to cure this in the past, but today I've been unable to do so. The "Activate a window by hovering over it with a mouse" feature in Windows is NOT selected. Windows is set to require a double-click to open a window. At various times in the past I've disabled the "tapping" feature in the Lenovo touchpad (the touchpad is the only pointer device I use), but today I can't even find those settings to make sure that they are still disabled. What am I forgetting to do?

i have purchased an 8 gb Kingston Ram module ( KTL-TP3CL). My plan was to upgrade my thinkpad T540p with 12 gb of ram. My configuration is ( i5/4gb ram/hd 4600/W7 pro/500gb hdd). The thing is that I am having second thoughts about having two modules from a different manufacturer and of different capacity.

I recently bought a Thinkpad 540p and wanted to know a way for stopping the battery from getting charged after a certain level. Its a very common feature to stop a battery from charging say after 80% and run on AC power supply directly.
Other lenovo laptops do support it, under various apps like Energy Manager, or Power Manager but I am not able to find any such options/app on my laptop?

I recently bought a Thinkpad T540P laptop. But there is always some noise made by the hard drive. The noise makes me feel uncomfortable. It sounds like it has been used for a long time, but actually only two days.

After the latest system update from Lenovo System update, my laptop T530 doesn't do a successful cold boot. A warm successive boot (with interruptible boot screen) works fine.
But cold boot always fails and the system powers down in less than 5s. This is seen after the BIOS updated to 2.59.1.12. restore to older version of BIOS(downgrade it)?

I just got a new Thinkpad 540p but it can't consistently connect to my home wireless network. Since a day of getting it, it was able to connect on 3 separate occasions. One being the one during the initial set up which was fine. But after that it will resort to a limited access state after a few minutes as well as with the other instances that I was able to connect. The same thing happens if I try to restart it right away after connecting. It goes to limited access. If I disconnect and try to reconnect, it won't allow me to. It prompts me to a troubleshooting step which did not work at all. I've been trying all day and night to look up solutions but with no clear one ....
This one runs on Windows 7 btw.... The wireless adapter is just a 2x2 11b/g/n wireless lan m.2 adapter... updated drivers and everything. Also, none of our other devices such as mobile phones and an HP desktop have problems connecting.

On my T540p, I configured the rapid start technology according to [URL] ....
Since I have performed a BIOS update to 2.14 and an update of the Intel Wifi driver to 17.0.5, I experience the problem of battery drain when the computer is in S4 sleep state, at a rate of approximately 0.125% per hour (on the 56Wh battery).
This was not the case before these updates. There was no noticable power drain in S4 sleep state, even not over multiple days. I'm using Win7, I set all the WoL capabilities both in BIOS and in the Intel driver to disabled, according to [URL] ....
External device USB charge settings are also fully disabled in BIOS and Power Manager. The problem does not occur when the system is fully shut down, but in S4 Sleep state, which should be a zero-power state too, as it was before the updates. In the details of the BIOS update it is stated " Fixed an issue where the computer might fail to enter sleep state". Could the power drain be a side effect of this fix? Or is it an issue with the (new) Wifi driver, as it was the case for the Y410P?
How could this battery drain be avoided?

I can't get into the bios anymore. I updated the bios via the BIOS Update Utility 2.56 and after that I can't see the "press enter to interupt normal startup" message anymore. And therfore can't get into the bios. Windows is still booting normally.

I am unable to enter the BIOS (or the boot device and application menu) of my T530. When I press Enter at the 'Press Enter to interrupt normal startup' prompt, nothing happens. It just ignores my input completely. F1 doesn't do anything either.
Otherwise my ThinkPad is working fine, but I would like to change some settings (especially change the boot device, to boot from USB).

I have a T400 2765-P3U model, and it won't boot up. When you turn it on, you see the Thinkvantage logo and it stays there. Trying to access the BIOS is non-responsive. I connected the hard drive to see if it was a hard drive issue, but it's not. The hard drive is response when connected via USB. I can't get past the Thinkvantage logo, no response when attempting to access the BIOS. It's still under warranty, so I'll probably send it in for repair but thought I'd give it a try fixing it before hand.

After updating my Thinkpad T540p, I cannot adjust the brightness in anyway. This is a problem because the screen is too birght and eats up battery.
It appears the only way to adjust the brightness is to use Intel HD Graphics, which isn't so convenient.
Fn keys don't work. changing the brightness on the Power Manager settings doesn't work. There is no brightness option on Windows Power Manager.
I have Intel HD Graphics 4600 10.18.10.3960
I have Lenovo Power Manager 6.66.3
Edit: In fact, I think it's posisble that Power Manager to just outright no longer works.

I have the T540p and the webcam doesn't work at all. When I try using it in Skype and Adobe Connect, I just get the camera icon with a slash through it. I've read in other forums that uninstalling the webcam driver and reinstalling it doens't work. I really need the webcam to work so this is pretty urgent for me.

I have a two month old Lenovo T540p with win 8.1 and a Realtek 2x2 1 1b/g/n wireless Lan M.2 adaptor that loses the connection to all wifi every 10 minute. The wifi worked fine in the beginning, but after a month and some updates the problem started.
Lan cable works without any problem.
I can always fix the wifi with turning off all wifi ( t. ex. fn+f8) wait 5 seconds and turn it on again. But after aprox. 10 min. it drops out again.
Every part of the laptop is up to date, even bluetooth driver, bios etc..
I tried another router same result. I tried changing channel on the router.
I tried connecting to a hotspot on my smartphone, same result.
The distance to the router makes no difference.
The Laptop is scanned for virus with Avast free.
I use chrome but tried IE and mozilla with the same result.
I tried to ping the router and it receives no data when the connection is lost.
I tried turning the firewall off, same result.
There no power saving on wifi.
Everything is fine in device management
Maybe its a win8 issue ? Do I really have to format the hd turn the computer back to beginning and start all over ? This shouldn't happen to a brand new computer.

My new T540p came with IE 11, and from time to time, I get a bar across the top of the big window where it's asking me to type in my *Windows* password. Not for whatever site I'm on, but my WINDOWS password. My year or so older T440 does not do this, nor does my non-Lenovo work IE11. There's a red cirle in the far right of the bar, with a "voice balloon" with 4 Xs.
The machine is virus free, but why I'm getting this prompt ONLY in the browser.

My T540p with Window 7 is experiencing problems starting and shutting down. After booting up I often get a blank screen where just the moused pointer is displayed. I have to hold the power button down to shut down and then try again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 goes to boot-up. Quite often when I shut down Win 7 The desktop icons disappear but the desktop background continues to be displayed and the notebook doesn't shut down.

I've just bought a t540p thinkpad and started migrating to the new machine with my all stuff from the old one. Unfortunately I've encountered a problem which I cannot resolve by myself.
I've got preinstalled Windows 7 which came with 2 partitions for itself - system_partition and os_files. After them there are 2 more primary partitions: Lenovo_Recovery and hibernation partition for 30-day standby.
I really want to rearrange these volumes so I can divide the files betweend OS C: partition and D: partition for my data. The problem is that there are already 4 primary partitions at this disk which is the limit for MBR so I can't create any more.
I've tried to boot up a linux mint live usb with gparted, but the system didn't start. Probably some UEFI issues which I cannot afford to deal with now.
So my disk looks like this at the moment:
- system_drv - 1,46 GB - system, active, primary
- os - 60 GB - bootable, pagefile, primary
- unallocated - 154,25 GB (space for D: partition which I got from shrinking OS partition)
- lenovo_recovery - 15,76 GB, primary
- (no name) - 7 GB - hibernation partition, primary
So, is there any possibility to change the volume with OS partition to the extended one and create second logical partition for my D: partition? Or maybe there is a way to change hibernation partition to the extended one?
If both options above are not possible I would be grateful for specifying the steps to fully disable the 30-day standby so I can delete hibernation partition (however the 7 GB at the end of disk will be unused then because I still won't be able to attach them to C: or D: partition). I assume that simply unchecking the option in the Global Setting of Lenovo Power Manager won't be enough.

I have a new T540p and I have an issue with numlock when logging into the computer. (This is NOT the numlock on-screen display icon). Basically, whenever I get ready to type my password in the login box, it brings up a warning that my Numlock is on and that "your password may be entered incorrectly".
I understand the need for this warning on keyboards without a separate numpad, but my T540p has a full-size keyboard with a separate numpad PLUS I am using an external keyboard. This error comes up both with and without an external keyboard.
This wouldn't be a problem except that this warning is especially aggressive and never in the same spot twice, and will sometimes even entirely cover the username AND password field with an ugly black box.
BTW, this is Windows 7 Pro (purchased downgraded from Win 8). I just can't figure this out, it's gotta be something with the Lenovo software but I can't find it.

I am a PC technician building a Thinkpad T540p for an end user. It is running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. I have installed all the drivers directly from the Lenovo support page. My problem is that the function key to turn the Wireless Radio is not working. I have checked function lock. The other function keys do their marked function fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the hotkey driver as well as the wireless driver and I still can not get it to work.

I think my attempt to update BIOS with a "BIOS update bootable CD" method has failed!
My laptop: Lenovo Thinkpad T420, i5 @ 2.5GHz, 4 GB RAM.
My old BIOS infos (taken from Setup before update attempt):
UEFI BIOS Version 83ET52WW (1.22)
UEFI BIOS Date (Year-Month-Day) 2011-03-24
Embedded Controller Version 83HT27WW (1.11)
I intended to update my BIOS to version 1.46 using "BIOS Update Bootable CD" from this link: [URL] .....
Steps:
1) I downloaded this ISO image: [URL] .... and burned it on a DVD-RW(DVD rewritable) medium.
2) I placed the DVD in my T420 and turned it off, then turned it on, select F12 (boot menu), selected DVD to boot from, and the BIOS update utility started.
3) In BIOS update utility I pressed "1" to read the instructions, then press "2" to update BIOS. I clicked "Y" to confirm and the update operation started. First it said " Now updating... ", then afer about 2 minutes, it said "Still updating ..." and it stuck like this.
So, right now, this message stays on my screen for about 1,5 hours(!!!):
"Still updating...
It may take about a few minutes.
<<< CAUTION >>>
Do not turn off the computer during the update.
Do not remove the CD during the update."
Other details (on system setup and current behaviour): AC was continously plugged in before&during BIOS update, battery is OK, no hard disk activity at all, keyboard is(seems) unresponsive, system's temperature is pretty high, but not dangerously high...

I have lenovo ThinkPad T540p. With Intel Core I7, 8gb RAM and 500gb HDD. I think my HDD is Toshiba. There was Windows 7 on it but it won't boot on it anymore. When I start Windows it shows 5 second black screen and then it shows Boot Menu. Well, I tried to reinstall Windows but when I have to select on which drive to install Windows I've got an error: "No drives were found". And the list with drives is empty, so I can't reinstall Windows. I updated BIOS but it didn't work. Finally, I formated my HDD and created two partitions on it. It worked, but not for a long time. I installed Windows 7. Everything was fine until I restarted my computer. And then I've got the same problem: "Can't boot from HDD" and it shows Boot Menu. Then I started Windows installation and I've got the same error: "No drives were found".
I don't understand what's going on with my HDD and what's destroying it's partitions. And I don't think that my HDD is broken.

I have the T540p with Win 8.1, actual drivers. Updates as in the web site. It works in the Ultra Dock with a 135 W power supply.
Attached to the Dock are following USB Peripherals
1) MS Keyboard 4000
2) Ms Mouse
3) Web Cam (Logitech 920)
After some time (sometimes 10 Min after booting, sometimes longer), the USB ports do not work. Unplugging the peripherals and plugging them into other USB ports of the dock does the trick, but the previous ones do not longer work until the next start.
The Screen goes blank. Sometimes but not always I get a message from the power manager stating that plane mode has been initiated due to power supply problems. I have tried connecting the thinkpads own 135 w supply, but no difference.

Symptoms: Laptop switches off unexpectedly; unexpected failure to charge battery; random changes in brightness. Messages appear such as: "This AC adapter may not provide enough power to your Lenovo computer. Please reconnect the proper AC adapter"; "Battery 2: There is an error"; Do you want to switch to 'Airplane in-seat power plan' (if this option is enabled in Power Manager).
This is why I think the power connector is to blame: I opened Power Manager to the Battery tab and also ran BatteryInfoView by Nirsoft. With the power connector firmly plugged in at the back of the laptop and with "90W AC adapter is attached" showing in PM, moving the connector slightly from side to side often triggers one of the symptoms. The two apps then indicate that the AC adapter is no longer present and that charging has stopped. In some cases vibration due to typing or moving the laptop is enough to trigger a symptom.
Supporting evidence: After I taped the power adapter's output cable to the laptop so the plug cannot easily move in its receptacle I found the symptoms stopped (see photo).
Summary:This is a serious annoyance. It means I can't rely on the battery being properly charged when I need it, or that the machine will stay running when I leave it unattended.
T540p / 64-bit Win7 / 840 Pro SSD / Ultradock.
