Lenovo ThinkPad L R/SL :: Blank Screen After Memory Ram Changed - SL510
Jan 3, 2012
I had 1GB & 2GB rams working fine in the SL510, windows 7 Profession, 62-bit, 320 GB drive. SL510 62-bit can take up to 8GB ram.
I replaced the 1GB by Samsung with a Hynix 4GB. At Crucial they give specs that are replacable for existing ram. I notice one number is different. The original Samsung says PC3 -10600, and the new Hynix says PC3-12800. The 12800 was given by crucial as part of the replacement numbers for the SL510. I bought at EBay used.
Anyway, I bootup and a blank, black screen results. I hear laptop running. I forced closed it and re-started again. Same...black screen as I hear laptop running.
Also, is there a certain order for rams to be installed? Originally, the 1GB ram was first, and the 2GB was below. I installed the 4GB ram below and moved the 2GB to top first position. (in case I want to access the 2GB easily to upgrade with another 4GB)

I have the following problem with my computer, lenovo sl 510: when pressing the power button, the computer won´t boot. On the display you can see a black background, in the upper right corner the intel emblem and in the lower left corner you can see "thinkpad". I cannot enter the bios and nothing works. We´ve tried already to press the power button a few times to reset the computer. Didn´t work as well. The keyboard doesn´t accept any hot key combinations.

So I made a mistake. I've reinstalled the OS on computers dozens of times and never quite had this issue. I have the Lenovo SL510 and tried to reinstall using the dvd drive. I entered bios and changed boot settings so the dvd drive was first and then booted it up but it went straight into windows 7 on the hard drive. I tried again, hitting f12 at startup and specifically selected the DVD drive to boot from and again it would boot directly from the hard drive ignoreing the DVD drive completely. Finally I opened the DVD drive from windows and installed over top of the old OS, planning to delete the old files once the install finished.
The install went fine, everything worked, except I didn't have internet. Turns out that the wireless adapter wasn't being recognized. I opened device manager and it was showing up under "Other Devices" as Network Controller with a yellow exclamation mark. I then proceed to track down and install the wireless drivers after connecting with an ethernet cable. I tried the intel chipset program and it would fail to install the correct driver, I tried the lenovo support program and it failed to install the driver, I manually downloaded and installed the driver and nothing happened. I tried several different wireless drivers and the result was always the same. I was working on the issue for at least 8 hours.
Finally I decided it wasn't worth the trouble, and why not reinstall again. This time I created a bootable USB drive and went through the same process, changed boot order, no result booted from hard drive, pressed f12, selected the USB drive, same result. Finally I installed the new OS image over the existing OS from the USB while the computer was on.
Installing the OS over the older OS was definitely a mistake, but it seems like the core of the problem was that the computer just wouldn't boot from anything other than the hard drive itself I didn't realize the implications that this presented and during the final install of the OS from the USB the computer restarted during installation. Of course.. the computer did not reboot from the USB which meant it simply came up black screen, the OS had already been wiped from the hard drive, but it could not boot from the USB and therefore simply comes up blackscreen.
The first thing I tried to do was reboot into BIOS, wasn't happening. When I attempted to access bios it would simply blackscreen with the power on indefinitely. I obviously tried booting and using f12 several times to try switching back and forth from USB to DVD and so on, but everything just black screened.
So....If the computer couldn't boot from USB or DVD then the only option was to boot from inside the original OS, but doing that caused a massive driver error which I couldn't resolve no matter what I did. And now I'm thinking the computer is completely lost. The only idea I have is to try using a friends computer to install an OS on to the SL510's hard drive and then resintall the hard drive into the Laptop to see if it will boot from it. I've poured over this entire forum and found lots of similar issues but no one seems to be offering any answers or solutions besides an occasional "we're looking into it" message.

My laptop was able to access the internet via my wireless internet connection just fine until a few days ago when it completely stopped working. I can't even view the wireless adapter in my hardware profile anymore. I'm able to connect wired but not wirelessly. I've reinstalled access points, but it didn't work. Nothing has changed in my setup to cause this to stop working.

I don't have a lot of money to replace the laptop that just completely died a month after the warranty expired. It is a Lenovo Thinkpad SL510, S/n xxxxxxx and the product ID is 28479XU. Purchased 3 years ago. I would like to know if I can take the hard drive out (which I was told by a knowledgeable computer person that it is OK with all the data on it) AND put it in my working Lenovo Thinkpad SL410, S/n xxxxxxx, Product ID 28427PU ?The SL510 is really dead. All efforts were tried to resusictate by same computer person.

I have very annoying problem with hot keys for adjusting monitor brightness! After last version of hot keys driver they don't work. I can't increase or decrease brightness! Pressing them down and can't change anything. And there is something more! For example I have adjusted some level from power manager and everything looks good until I don't try to manage brightness with hot keys. I doesn't matter if i want to increase or decrease brightness, it just goes to maximum level!

Look' s like I have big problem:
1. When I plug charger in to my SL510 lights don't turn on. If battery are take out - laptop is impossible to turn on;
2. If I plug same charger to my second (old r60 thinkpad - lights is turning on and all boots normally);
3. I take charge from my second laptop and test on SL510 - lights still not turning on;
4. If I try to boot without charger (on battery) laptop is working fine.
Is it possible that - when my battery be empty I can never turn on my laptop?

Thinkpad SL510 operated with windows 7.
Whatever I try, I am not able to activate the WLAN card. When I diagnose the network connection it says somethink like "the device is not activated or not installed". However, the device is listed properly as "Intel WiFi Link 100 BGN" in the device manager. All windows updates are installed, and the Lenovo update manager only shows one optional update (Intel Chipset driver for Windows 7) which gives an error when trying to install it.
One strange thing is that, when I use the "ping 127.0.0.1" command in the command shell, only 1-2 out of the 4 tries give a result, the other ones show a timeout error.
What is more, the device works properly with an Linux Live disk, so the hardware seems to be ok. It is just not working with windows 7.

I want to upgrade my SL510 (28577MG) with a new Crucial M550 512GB SSD. The Crucial website says that the drive is compatible with my laptop: [URL] ....
Unfortunately neither the Windows 8 Install CD nor my BIOS can detect the drive. Here is a list of steps I tried to solve the problem:
Change the SATA Controller Mode Option in the BIOS from AHCI to Compatibility
SSD does not get detected in BIOS2. Update the BIOS to the latest version 1.52 (6JET94WW)
SSD does not get detected in BIOS3. Run the 2.5 inch SATA Hard Drive Firmware Update Utility
[URL] ....Utility can't detect the SSD / find any updates4. Look for a firmware update on the Crucial homepage
[URL] .... There are "No firmware updates"...
I also installed the SSD in my desktop (Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3, 770) where it is detected in the BIOS and in Windows 7. So it is definitely in working condition.

Just got a Thinkpad SL510 2847 D2U, Windows 7 Prof.(64 bit).
Often when I touch the Touchpad I see the arrow on screen change to a "button" being displayed. And the button is not like using the arrow. Very difficult to work with it. So I keep moving around Touchpad to get rid of the "button" and return to arrow.
How to rid of this "button" action? Or what am I doing to cause it? I believe I have changed the sensitivity of the touchpad. I'll check again.

I have a X1 Carbon 3443CTO and it's running fine.Last night everything was ok and I went into the BIOS and changed AHCI to compatibility (don't ask me why, I was doing some testing), then I went "Exit and Save Changes" (at the last page of BIOS). As soon as I press Enter the screen freezed there (as opposed to reboot)Since it hangs there I hold the power button and it shutdown. Then I power it up again, but now, here is the problem:
1) The computer turns ON, keyboard backlight flash on for a second (normal)
2) Screen stays blank (no, it's not the backlight faulty)
3) power light turns ON (normal)
4) no sign of activities pressing any buttons, no beep sound

We have new Thinkpad X240 laptops that don't have the ability to change the password using CTRL + ALT + DEL. They are using Windows 8.1. These laptops came with Windows 7 and we used the Lenovo media to install Windows 8. The ability to change the password was present right after the Windows 8 install but when we upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft store we can no longer change the password.

System specs:
Lenovo T430U
Intel i5-3427U
8GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz SoDIMM Memory
HDD 500G 7200rpm Toshiba
mSATA 24GB Samsung Cache
Win 8 Pro, upgraded to 8.1
I rarely use this machine but a couple of months ago I went to boot it up and found that I was not able to get past the Windows splash screen. Sometimes I don't even get the Windows splash screen, I just get a black screen. Rarely I get a Windows screen saying that it is diagnosing a system problem or something to that effect and I can even get to where it will allow me to do some Windows diagnostics but nothing ever comes of it and the process is extremely slow.
I called Lenovo, but of course my machine is out of waranty so the tech just gave me a few pointers and said I could send it in to the depo but the potential repair cost could range up to about 75% of what I paid for the machine in the first place. Anyways, after having me try a few things in the BIOS he suggested that it was likely the hard drive. I mistakenly thought from the time that I bought this machine that the OS was installed on the 24 GB SSD so I ordered a new SSD and swapped it in. This made no difference at all as I have now learned that the mSATA SSD drive is merely for cache to speed up booting.
I am afraid that this means the main HDD is at fault, and quite frankly, if I replace it I am going to do a fresh install of Windows 7. But I do have pictures and docs that I would like to salvage if possible.

I have newly bought a x1 carbon with 8g memory and i7 4660u, system win7 4 bites, the model is 20A7 CTO1WW, I didn't choose the high resolution screen because I think it is not neccessary.
But the usable momery is only 3.08gb, i am very confused and don't know what is the problem. Is it because the mainboard doesn't support 8g memory?
Here is the picture of system information.

The thing is that I am having second thoughts about having two modules from a different manufacturer and of different capacity.

I have 2 x 4GB sticks of G.SKill F3-8500CL7D-8GBSQ DDR3-1066 PC3-8500 CL7-7-7-20 SO-DIMM.
They worked perfectly as the only memory sticks in a W500, but I'd like to install them in addition to the 2 x 4GB Lenovo memory sticks that came with the W520.
Is this going to work and be stable at all? After reading the W520 specs, I'm still uncertain about the memory speeds of the two different sets of sticks and if that is a real compatibility issue. I don't know enough about memory specs.

I have a ThinkPad x121e (from memory) which I like. However it has a maximum memory threshold of 8Gb.
I need more memory so that I can host some Virtual Machines to do some development work - I was just wondering which current ThinkPad models supported 16Gb of RAM (not necessarily out of the box, but by purchasing from Crucial or similar).
I've searched and found a page but it wasn't up to date: [URL] ....
i.e. it doesn't show the X1 Carbon or the Yoga (I know it's not thinkpad) models
Basically I'm after something similar to what I've got with improvements (a little bigger would be fine but not too big - say 14" max) - good battery life, can have windows 8.1, a touch screen and can get an SSD (again happy to upgrade via crucial or other third party) and can support 16Gb of RAM.

I recently upgraded my ThinkPad W530 laptop BIOS from version 1.11 (which it shipped with) to the latest, version 2.59.
After doing so, my two 16 GB DIMMS are not only showing up as 8 GB each, thereby cutting my usable memory in half from 32 GB to 16 GB.
I ran through all the normal hardware checks to ensure that one of the DIMMS wasn't bad. I tried each DIMM separately, tried in different slots, etc. They both show up just fine and even pass the memory quick test in the BIOS. Only, they are showing up as 8 GB DIMMs.
Is there a feature in the latest BIOS that would somehow limit this? It was working fine at 32 GB before.
And, unfortunately, there is no reverting back to BIOS v.1.11 from anything after v.2.55. It asked me if I was sure I wanted to proceed...this was the last type of problem I expected to see though. (I also tried reverting back to previous versions of the BIOS that were allowed and it didn't work...

My T540p with Window 7 is experiencing problems starting and shutting down. After booting up I often get a blank screen where just the moused pointer is displayed. I have to hold the power button down to shut down and then try again. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 goes to boot-up. Quite often when I shut down Win 7 The desktop icons disappear but the desktop background continues to be displayed and the notebook doesn't shut down.

Lenovo G510 laptop; Windows 7
I'm trying to set up the laptop to use an external monitor via HDMI. I tried a setting but it didn't work. However the laptop screen went blank and now I can't undo the changes.
On reboot, the screen works until the Window splash screen then it goes blank as the computer continues to boot up.
Booting into safe mode works, but I can't access the graphics card properties from there.
Tried unplugging the HDMI cable, but doesn't work.
How can I bring back the default display settings without doing a hard reset? (It's not my own computer)....

my Lenovo T410 laptop won't start. I hit the power button and it looks like it's about to boot up. The thinklight blinks on as normal, the cd drive is checked, the caps lock button blinks on, then nothing. No display, and keyboard is unresponsive. Power light remains on; if I leave it a while the fan comes on. I can turn the machine off using the power button, but the problem remains next time I switch it on.
I've tried removing power and battery, pressing power button 10 times then holding power for 30 secs, before replacing power and battery, but nothing happens. I've tried using a different keyboard. I've tried plugging in an external monitor. No change.
This problem appeared after I left it on overnight. I have a hunch that it went into hibernation mode, perhaps, and that it disrupted some important function which it was unable to complete.

I have a Lenovo Flex 15 device (i5 version with 4GB ram). I upgraded it with an SSD, reinstalled Win 8.1 in UEFI mode. Everything works fine.
Next I replaced the 4GB memory with an 8GB version (same speed, Kingston) now the machine won't boot anymore, all it shows me is a black screen, both with power switch and novo button. If I reinsert the original ram it boots just fine again. The 8GB ram is not faulty, I tried it in another device and it works. I also tried disabling secure boot in bios but it's the same problem.

As others with x230's have found, I have an issue with the screen fading/graying out then developing vertical lines over the entire screen. Pressing the screen bottom screen border resolves it for a split second then it occurs again, though resolves usually after pressing it at various points along the plastic lower edge maybe 3-6 times, sometimes with slight flickering of whites after. Runngin at 60hz. URL...
I bought it on ebay so don't have any warranty information, unfortunately. It appears to be the LCD connector or cable. Is it possible to open it up and fix that somehow, or should I buy an IPS screen (the current screen isn't IPS I believe) and replace it myself?

Relatively soon after a Windows Update (Vista), my screen blacked out and the resolution changed from 1920x1200 to something like 800x600. After restarting the notebook, everything seemed to be back to normal, except my graphics card (GeForce 8800M GTX x 2) wasn't working, and upon looking in the device manager, it said the device wasn't working (code 43).
So, I tried uninstalling drivers/reinstalling drivers, etc. and nothing seemed to work. And now something I've done has made the main VGA drivers or whatever not work, and all I see is a big black screen on startup (but the mouse icon is on the screen and can move around).
