Lenovo Yoga 13 Flex :: Black Screen - Bios Settings
Jan 14, 2014
I've been having problems with the dreaded "black screen" when starting my Yoga13 (but only somethimes!). To try and narrow it down, as there seem to be so many things that can cause this, I went into the Bios settings from "F2" and setup it up to ask for a "Power on" password before starting windows.
What I have discovered is that when the black screen occurs its BEFORE the Bios asks for the initial "Power on" password, ie I cannot see the box asking for the password and so Windows has NOT yet started to load. To overcome this, I just press the power button to switch off the system, wait 20seconds and then it will usually start.
Once past this, no errors ever occur on the windows side.
I just formatted my yoga 2 pro, downloaded the drivers and ran the Bios Update. I followed the instruction on the read me, ran the .exe, clicked next/ok until the laptop restarted and if I'm not mistaken a red menu with a progress bar showed up. At that point I left and when I came back a few minutes later the laptop was turned on, the screen lighting was on but the display was black, the keyboard backlights were also turned on and everything else was off. The lights on/near the power button that signal if it's turned on and plugged to the AC are turned off.
It's been like this for over 30 minutes now, no signs of progress. I'm not very keen on turning off or unplugging the laptop while flashing the BIOS, but at this point there's not much else I can do.
I have a Lenovo Flex 15 device (i5 version with 4GB ram). I upgraded it with an SSD, reinstalled Win 8.1 in UEFI mode. Everything works fine.
Next I replaced the 4GB memory with an 8GB version (same speed, Kingston) now the machine won't boot anymore, all it shows me is a black screen, both with power switch and novo button. If I reinsert the original ram it boots just fine again. The 8GB ram is not faulty, I tried it in another device and it works. I also tried disabling secure boot in bios but it's the same problem.

I don't think this is the same screen flicker that is experienced by the few others due to auto brightness problems...
It's flickering black and then the whole thing turns unresponsive after a while...and although the video shows it happening during a low light environment, i have had this encounter during a brightly lit area as well...

I've posted a copy of what really happens on google drive. Is this a case of motherboard problems? I jsut got my laptop about 3 weeks ago. Any chance for a 1-1 exchange?
My integrated webcam on my lenovo yoga ideapad seems to be malfuncitoning. When I try to open any camera using applications the screen is black with no error message or viewable problems. When I check in device manager the camera says all the drivers are updated and it is in working condition.
Things I've tried/ Things others have suggested and did not work:

I have a new Flex 14. When I turn it on, I frequently get the following message "The battery is charged to a high capacity. Staying above 70% of capacity for a long period of time is adverse to the battery health. Enable 'Conservation Mode' in Settings." I can not find "Conservation Mode" in "Settings." ?
I purchased a new Flex 2-15 online the past week. The model name shown on the back is "20405". Manufacture date is May 12, 2014. The User Guide refers to a "Novo Button", which is shown in diagrams as being on both the left edge and the right edge near the front. Neither location has a button of any sort. The right edge has a pinhole in the supposed button location. A curved arrow icon is next to the pinhole. I have an inkling this may be some sort of factory reset button. Lacking the Novo button, what is the procedure for accessing the features which the manual says are accessed by pressing this non-existent button?. That is, BIOS, and/or the one touch image backup/restore system?
I just flashed the new BIOS v38 and now USB charging does not work. I have checked Energy Manager settings, they are correct. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the EM software with no success. How to get USB charging working again?
I wanted to do a fresh install but my restore files are in Windows 8 and I wanted 8.1. I used my 8.1 pro disk and created a bootable media for installing using USB. I had to go into the BIOS and change it to legacy before it would see the USB drive. Went ahead and deleted all the partitions then created a single new one for windows. The installation worked flawlessly then I went ahead with the driver installs.
The very first driver was the firmware update. The system updated the firmware without any issues but once it rebooted I only receive the following message "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert recovery Media or hit any key. The select 'boot manager" to chose a new boot device or to boot to recovery media. When I go hit any key it leaves me with no boot options probably due to them being legacy options. I've tried F2 on startup to get into the bios and change it back to legacy but this never works.. I have also tried F12 trying to get it to let me select the startup drive.
Using windows 8.1 i've uptaded my intel hd 4000 drivers, restarted and lauched a 3d game. After few seconds I tried alt+tab and then everything got stalled and eventually with lots of artifacts on screen I've got a message about a system crash and that system now is dumpin information to a file and next it will restart. In that moment I've panicked and hard reseted (so memory dump hadn't finished).
So now when I try to boot - for a quite some time there is a black screen and then a list of boot options pops up:
Normal Startup , bios setup , boot menu .... but the keyboard is not working at all.
So after connecting a usb keyboard I entered boot options and there iv noticed something strange:
Link to image
EC version is messed up.
Keyboard is not working at all and some other things.
On top of that when I'm choosing normal startup the windows "wheel" is turning but its newer getting to boot.
I have a severe problem (I guess) after the latest BIOS Update. Windows 7 freezes during startup.
I own a 64-bit Lenovo FLex 2 15D with AMD A6-6310 and R4, 4GB RAM and a SSHD (8GBSSH). I purchased it without OS and installed Windows 7 - which worked fine so far.
I yesterday updated the BIOS with version 9FCN23WW (for Win7 and Win8), the latest BIOS update. A mistake, it seems.
After Reboot, I first had to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, because it would not let me boot at all. I figured out how to get into the BIOS-Setup to disable this (press Enter 2x, press Tab when in the Boot Menu to access the "Apps Menu", then "SETUP").
Now Win7 begins to start up, but freezes during the startup process (the splash screen with the win flag freezes and looks a bit strange. I used the "protected mode" Windows Startup and saw that the process always hangs when loading "amdkmpfd.sys".
That is basically it.I guess I have to find a way to re-install the previous version of the BIOS.
Now about what I did to fix this (poor, but I tried):
If I try to start from a Win7 installation CD-ROM (actually it is one for Dell PCs, but I guess that is not the problem) and press a key to boot from CD, Windows loads files, shows "Starting Windows" and at a certain point again just freezes. When I -do not- press a key, WIndows Boot Manager shows up and mentions that "Windows failed to start (etc.)" "File: EFIMicrosoftBootBCD" "An Error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data."
I can't even boot into Linux on a USB stick, because the Windows "Error Recovery" won't let me when I try (just offers to boot to Win7 in protected mode - it could be that it fails immediately and jumps back to Win Startup).
I just flashed BIOS on my thinkpad yoga 20CD00B1US. I got the lates BIOS 1.18/1,09 and sice this flash, I cannot make any changes in BIOS. I can list in BIOS but cannot highlite and change any setting expect quick boot Enabled/Disabled
My even manager is reporting me this warrining: : The embedded controller (EC) returned data when none was requested. The BIOS might be trying to access the EC without synchronizing with the operating system. This data will be ignored. No further action is necessary; however, you should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS.
I do have set up supervisor password for BIOS, password on power on. When going in BIOS, I am not asked to put password in, which could be the issue.
Loving my Yoga 13 so far have had it since Oct 26th when it was released. Like everyone else I had some issues with partitioning yadda yadda yadda, got that taken care of, but lately I've noticed that my screen brightness seems to flicker, ALL the time, when switching from program to program if the color changes on the screen I notice that the brightness changes as well in noticeable increments. I have the automatic brightness setting set to OFF, so I can't imagine that's the reason.
I have a crack on my screen that starts in the bottom left and spreads to almost the top right. It is not bad and everything works fine except for the touchscreen. Only half the touchscreen works and sometimes the crack causes the other half of the touchscreen to act on its own and its very annoying and messes me up when I try to surf the web or use Microsoft Office. Is there a way I can disable the touchscreen?
I have just bought the Flex 15. I looked at the power settings and set the brightness, but it is ignoring the settings and always either darker or brighter than I want it. It keeps flickering between being darker and brighter and it's giving me a headache. It is unplugged if that makes a difference, I haven't used it plugged in yet to know if it does it then. How can I stop it? I've looked through the settings and can't find anything.
I installed a new video driver today (updated to newest), and all of a sudden my screen is flashing before it rotates when i flip it to tent mode or tablet mode. to be specific, when i flip the screen over, the screen flashes off and back on, before rotating. this has never happened before.
I got my new Yoga 2 Pro last week and the screen rotation worked properly. I decided to wipe the partitions and install my own version of Windows 8.1.
Since then the screen rotation doesn't work. The screen rotation button doesn't do anything and I don't have the 'Enable auto-rotate' checkbox in the resolution screen
In my device manager I have an error on 'HID Sensor collection' saying "This device cannot start" (Code 10). Failed to initialize sensor from HID collection descriptor". I am not sure if this is related.
I had a problem for a few days now, sometimes, out of nothing, the screen color turns yellowish....like a warm color....i right click in the home screen, personalize, display, calibrate color, the template for color calibration appears, i enter next...and voilá, it comes back to the cold white color....it just happened as i turn from tent mode to laptop mode to wright this thread
I've noticed the screen on my Yoga 2 pro tries to automatically adjust the brightness of the display depending on how dark or light the content being displayed is... I want to figure out a way to make it stop. For example, my desktop background is just plain black, and when i got to my desktop, it starts to dim by 4-5 levels lower, and then when I go back to my browser, it reverses and starts to turn up the brightness by 4-5 levels. I've already tinkered with all the power settings and even the advanced power settings to turn of auto dim/automatically adjust brightness etc and all those settings but it still does it.
Laptop still under warranty. I recently had a motherboard and HDD replacement. I wanted to install Windows myself, but the BIOS was set to UEFI, and I couldn't seem to boot off of a USB drive. So I switched it to Legacy, booted from the pendrive, and installed Windows just fine.
For whatever reason, I went back to try and change the setting to UEFI. Now the laptop switches on, but refuses to boot. I get a black screen, with no logo or any prompt whatsoever to access the BIOS.
I read a bit and seems I need to remove the BIOS battery, let the memory clear itself to reset BIOS settings to default, and try again? If it matters, I re-installed Windows 7 64-bit.

Just picked up this model from Best Buy yesterday. Like everyone else in the large thread I am having the yellow color issue as well. However, I have another issue that I can't seem to find any information on.
The brightness on my screen is constantly adjusting. It is most obvious when making the move from the desktop to Metro. After hitting the windows key, I can see the brightness increasing in stages (about 4 times) after flipping over to Metro.
I have disabled Auto-Brightness under the Change My PC Setting -> Power and Sleep menu. I have also disabled Enable Adpative Brightness under Windows Power Mangement but the issue still persists.
Is there any other location I might be missing a setting that can be affecting this ? Brightness is set to full and keeps dipping down.
Just picked up my brand new Yoga 3 Pro a few days ago and on the whole I love it, except I've just noticed there's an odd issue when listening to music (whether it be local or streaming thru spotify).
If I'm browsing a document in Word or even when accessing the Lenovo Support screen from the Start menu, any left to right horizontal scrolling (either with the touch screen or touchpad) causes a crackling interference to the sound. I did notice it would crackle as the Discussion forum cards were loading up and appearing too.
It's not the physical speakers themselves because this occurs thru headphones as well.
Strange thing is it doesn't occur when scrolling vertically through a document.
On the whole it's not a HUGE problem, but given it's a brand new 2grand laptop, now while it's still brand new and I haven't even had a chance to load much onto it. How to stop this from happening?
I use a USB MIDI keyboard (Akai LPK25) with my Ideapad. I've not previously had an issue with this configuration, but since about a week ago, as soon as I plug in the device the touch screen becomes disabled. Removing the device doesn't restore touch screen functionality; I actually have to reboot.
Was there a recent USB upgrade that's causing this issue?
Update your Chrome browser to Version 37.0.2062.94 m and above ... It works fantastic with the Y2P and the text is so sharp now for high res laptops running Windows ...
I've just updated mine 15 minutes ago, haven't come across any bugs or usability issue.
Touching on the screen when typing still does bring up the OnScreen Keyboard ...
Oh well ... At least the text is much sharper now compared to the previous versions of browsers ... I have a Y2P (i5) ...
