Sony :: Can Z Run Full Bluray 1080p On Integrated Graphics
May 9, 2010
For maximum battery life, can the Z run full 1080p Bluray on the integrated graphics card and not use the 'external' graphics card? This is query for both old and new Z.

I own a 5930G for almost a year.It has an NVidia 9600M GT and it says "1080p full hd" on a sticker.
3 questions:
Using Vlc media player,I have minor sound problems with 720p .mkv files.Particularly, every 3-4 seconds, the sound seems discontinuous for an instant. Is there something I can do about it?
How can I check if I have the latest graphics card drivers and if not, update them?
This and my former aspire acer model, can only burn a few brands of cd/dvds without error.Lots of common brands, like TDK,philips etc get a failure while burning always at the time that the burning process is beyond 80% complete.I start to think that this is a common problem for acer laptops. Can you suggest brands of cd's/dvd's that work well?in my former acer aspire model,"that's write" were the only ones that I could find that worked 100% of the time. And I had tried about 12 known brands. In my 5930g model,I haven't tried to test a lot of brands yet,but the "that's write" brand doesn't work any more.I have burned less than 10 cds and the problem occured right from the beginning.
my battery life is reduced to a mere 30 seconds. Is there a way to recalibrate it?can't seem to find it in the acer e-power management

I'll be buying an XPS M1330 soon. The only option I'm still confused on is the graphics card. I'm not a gamer and battery life is important to me as I'm on the road every week for work. However, with Vista now - which I have no experience with - is it true that you need a discrete graphics card to efficiently run Vista (and I guess certain options such as Aero).
Specifically, my questions are:
1. Will an integrated graphics card impair the ability to use Vista in any way and, if so, how?
2. What's the difference in battery life when using a dedicated vs integrated graphics card? I.e., how much extra battery life will I gain by choosing integrated?
3. Will an integrated graphics card cause my system to just not operate as efficiently in general - just every day navigating even - since Vista relies so heavily on graphics? And, if so, how does any inefficiency manifest itself? Slower time bringing up screens? Computer running hot because of a strain using graphics?

The one component of my Acer Aspire 5002LMi notebook that defies upgrade is the SiS M760GX integrated graphics. Otherwise, I've been very happy with the unit. Processor, hard drive and ram upgrades were easy. Is anyone aware of any tweeks that can be done to get the most out of this weak integrated graphics platform? Suggestions appreciated as I intend to keep the unit in service for a long time using XP Pro since the graphic won't handle Vista. Obviously, not a gaming machine but it will handle some older games.
Acer Aspire 5002 LMi: AMD Turion ML 37; Hitachi 80 gb 7200 rpm drive; 2 gb pc2700 DDR ram; Lugano M motherboard with SiS M760GX integrated graphics

I actually want the Intel Integrated graphics for the dv7t. This was offered a couple months ago but now the only options are for NVidia chips. Will the integrated graphics ever come back or are they gone for good?
Also, what happened to the regular edition dv5t? The special edition is nice and all, but I don't care about the fancy case. Are the new low-resolution 16:9 laptops taking over completely?

I have just recently purchased an HP 17-e049wm. This laptop has the AMD Radeon HD8650G integrated graphics with up to 4206MB of total memory. I understand that this graphics "card" uses the onboard memory to act as video memory. How can I increase or decrease the amount of memory allocated to the graphics? I don't seem to be able to make any changes from the BIOS. Is this something that adjusts automatically?

I have HP Envy dv7-7212nr. It has Intel HD graphics 4000 which is shown in dxdiag and a GT 650M.
I have VGA and also HDMI cables.
How do I set it so that GT 650M is the main one and has it shown on dxdiag? Is that setup to be done in BIOS or can I do it on the desktop?

Acer Aspire 3830TG-6494 crashes while gaming.
Crash symptoms:
-happens anywhere from within the first 15 minutes to several hours into a game (no link to graphic quality settings). No loss in performance leading up to the crash.
-screen glitches and goes black, with a brief buzzing sound. Power remains on and fan is still running, forcing a hard reset.
-Occasionally the sceen will freeze, ~1cm horizontal green lines will appear all over and a loud buzzing sound is emitted from the speakers until a hard reset.
-Rarely I get a BSOD or the computer will shut down and restart itself. Resulting DMP files show no consistent suspected cause.
-Crash will occasionally be preceded by certain in-game sounds cutting out. But not always.
-The only link between crashes is that I'm usually thinking a solution worked right before the crash. (Frustrating!)
-System will occasionally crash while watching videos or something, but only crashes consistently while gaming.
I have tried the following:
-Running games using only the integrated graphics or nVidia GeForce GT 540M GPU.
-Underclocking either the GPU(500MHz and 700MHz, from 672MHz and 900MHz), the CPU (seting max 70% power plan), and both simultaneously.
-Temperatures do not exceed 70C under heavy use, and crash does not seem to be linked to any temperature increases.
-Run both Windows 7 memory diagnostic and memtest86 (no problems found)
-Run intel CPU diagnostics and intel XTU benchmark which did not cause a crash.
-Upgrading all drivers to latest versions, as well as rolling them back to the versions recommended on acer download website. (Completely uninstalling graphics drivers before re-installing different versions) And making sure windows update was not automatically installing driver updates.
-upgrading BIOS to v1.12, it was stable for a weekend then went back to crashing.
-The system seems to be more stable in power saver or balance mode, but not by much. I also suspected the Ac power adapter because it didn't seem to crash on battery for a brief time. But I was wrong and it did end up crashing whether plugged in or not.
Aand cleaning it out w/ compressed air, obviously ... I don't game often, and usually play older games on lower quality settings. I'm not overclocking or streaming at the same time.

I have been speculating over this prospect giving the direction that Apple took with the starting price of the 24" iMac (upgrade everything else and downgrade the VRAM).
I mean, this is something I would like to see, but I wonder if it is a smart move on Apple's part given how much they make off the current MBP's with the so called Apple Tax.
And, if they made this move, one has to wonder if it still would be considered a Pro.

I went to play a movie, and it froze during the beginning previews. I once got it all the way to the title menu, but it froze when starting to play the movie. I had to eject the disc, because the entire program locked up. So I tried a different disc, same thing. I tried a DVD, and it worked just fine. :/
It never freezes in the same spot. Sometimes it freezes when its inbetween different preview or loading the menu.
I'm using Intervideo WinDvd BD for Vaio. (version 8, I believe). I tried finding an update driver on the sony support site, but it doesn't list it on my model's page.
Intervideo is now Corel apparently, and they only support version 9 and up.
I tried a system restore, because last week I was able to play a movie just fine, but there was no change.
I can't find much support for this kind of problem.
Computer specs.
-Sony Vaio VGN-FW200 series
-Windows Vista 64
-Intervideo Win DVD BD for Vaio, vs.8

I have the new Z model VPCZ117GG..and unfortunately for my region it didn't come with a Bluray drive and I had no choice of customization as well..
My version is the one with the Full HD screen,256GB SSD and 8GB Ram.
I'm wondering if it's possible to replace the DVD drive with a bluray drive. I know this will void warranty, but i'll be doing it after my warranty expire

The BluRay drive in my Z11 died sometime last week (UJ242ABSX2-S). After some deliberation, I've made the decision to sit on the warranty claim for now and replace the drive with a 1TB WD hard drive (yes, I know is it 12.5 mm. I believe it will fit).
Simply put, I don't need an optical drive but since the drive cost $500, I'll have it serviced at some point, just not now.
While pulling the BR drive from the Z11, I thought I'd give the BR drive from my Z591 a go in the new machine (UJ232A). It fit in the chassis as you would expect, but you can't fully screw it in place (easily fixed with some sticky tape). It functioned fine; read/write, keyboard eject button, etc.
Also, I believe the faceplate from the X will work with the Z11 with some light modification to the plastic clips. Doing this would be permanent, so I didn't try.
If you haven't noticed already from my other posts, I have little to no hesitation when it comes to pulling stuff apart. This is further reinforced when I pulled the UJ242ABSX2-S apart to take a look at the internals.

My $250 netbook works through the VGA port at 1080p resolution to my Samsung 1080P LCD TV no problem. My $200 Panasonic BD-35 ports 1080P through the HDMI port no problem.
With my new Z, I'm having a bit of trouble getting proper scaling on the HDMI. I am selecting ONLY external screen on the Sony menu (Not cloning or 2nd screen). The desktop extends BEYOND the edges of my Samsung LCD TV.
So I go in the menu and select the alternative and now there is a small black border around the Samsung LCD where the desktop is a bit smaller than the screen.

I'm gettin a Vaio FW as a replacement to my FZ. The only question I have now is wheter I should get the Xbrite-ECO 1600x900 or the FullHD 1920x1080 screen.
Will the 1920 be too small to actually use? Also my FZ is Xbrite-Hi Color, the sharpness and contrast and colors are VERY important to me that's why I never got an ECO display. Is this 1600x900 "ECO" like all "ECOs"?? (narrower viewing angles, less vibrant colors than Hi Color and so on..)
Or are they the same screen with different resolutions only?

Many folks considering the Sony Z have been asking the question of whether or not the "Full-HD" screen offered in some configurations/countries has "too high" a resolution, given the relatively low 13.1" screen size. While I can't answer that question for you, I thought I'd post a little table that can help to understand on a comparison basis where this sits, given current products:
As you can see, this walks through the spectrum from 24" monitors through the Sony Vaio P, which currently offers the highest DPI setting that I'm aware of on any currently shipping portable PC.
A few interesting observations:
For those who are accustomed to using E-Ink panels, the Z's full-HD screen offers essentially identical DPI.If you've ever seen a Sony Vaio P in-person, its admittedly very high DPI is indeed challenging for folks who don't have great short-distance vision.Even the low-resolution version of the Sony Z has a DPI that's higher than 18.4" 1080P notebooks. One source of debate relates to whether or not the Vaio Z's resolution is too high. Critics state that "magazines are 600 DPI+, how could you not read a much lower DPI"? The answer is that we're undergoing a critical transition.
The "problem" is that those who've used computers for years are actually accustomed to seeing pixels. Traditionally, operating systems and user interfaces have "assumed" a pixel density of around 100 DPI. What's changed is that we're beginning to undergo a transition from traditional displays to much higher density displays. Part of this challenge, led by E Ink, is how to effectively replace paper. In that context, viewing individual pixels is actually undesirable, while rendering fonts with authenticity is the top priority - precisely the top concern of most publishers.............

My new VAIO Z crashes on Youtube vids that are 1080p...
When I first got the Z and tried some vids on YT it crashed right away (leaving me with a blank screen and awkward noise).
I then did a clean install of windows 7, but no luck, still crashes on youtube 1080p vids.
I really dont understand it, but e.g. Avatar in BD quality (14 gigs) doesnt crash whatsoever.

i was looking over at the VPC-Z12 leak page from Australia it shows that only the 1920x1080p screen has the 96% Adobe RGB coverage. Is this just australia or is the 1600x900 screen offered by Sony everywhere else (US & UK specifically) 96% Adobe RGB as well?

So with best buy selling the low end model for $1699.99 I'm curious if there is a resource for purchasing z series parts like the 1920 x 1080 screen from the international versions (or the $4500 US version). Even if it's a $400 service part it's still worth it.
I'd have no problem replacing the screen and likely able to see the 1600x900 on ebay for some cash. I just haven't seen a place for Sony parts

When i try to play a 1080p movie over hdmi on my tv, it doesn't run smoothly ( i think its called framedrops?)
The videocard is a 9300m GS and since i've got hybrid graphics, a driver update is not possible.
The laptop is a vaio z21wn.
I've tried multiple things (coreAVC, MPC, VLC, etc..) but none seem to give better output.
Are there other solutions to this problem?

I am an owner of the old Z series(690) and have loved it ever since day 1. I think my only gripe was the gpu felt at times a bit weak for me, but that was to be expected. In general, it handled nearly all my tasks fine.
I am going to now be purchasing the new Z1190 CTO series. Right now, my specs are set to i7-620m, Win7 Professional, Silver, 4GB RAM, 192GB SSD. Is there any options you guys think I should change, such as an increase in RAM, or a decrease in something else, etc.
The only reason I have not purchased the laptop yet is because of 2 things, firstly is the 1600x900 resolution. I love the resolution, and while, sometimes, I find some things a bit small, overall everything is readable and fits well. When I heard they were having 1920x1080, that definitely got me excited. While I do not want to opt for the signature series Z, I am sure 1920x1080 will eventually come after a refresh.
Do you think it is worth waiting for the high resolution?
Is it worth it..or do you prefer the 1600x900?
Are there any major pros or cons to switching 1080p or is there not a large difference.
Lastly, the nvidia 330m, I do not know too much about. Most of the things I do on the computer, are not very graphic intensive, (light photoshopping, programming, etc) but will the Z with the specs I listed be able to run some games at decent settings with not everything turned down like the 9300?
