Sony :: Expresscard ESata Conroller Installation
Aug 6, 2009
I have bought a Condor 2 X eSata 34mm Express Cardbus Controller for use on my Sony Vaio SZ79N which is running the 32 bit version of Vista Professional.
When I try to install using the supplied installation CD , I get the error message “No JMicron JMB36X SCSI adapter found! Setup program will terminate.”
I have downloaded what seem to be the latest drivers form their web site but can't install from them either.
what I need to run, or what settings I need to add/change or whatever to get the eSata Expresscard up and running?

I recently bought an FW490J and wanted to add eSATA capability to it. I ended up buying an AKE BC338 because it was the only one that didn't have anything sticking out of the slot itself. However, I can't seem to get this card to be detected by windows.
Actually, i got it to detect once and only once, and after that there was nothing. Has anyone gotten expresscard eSATA working under windows 7? What am I doing wrong? I know this card works because I tried it on another laptop, also with Windows 7(detected and drivers installed).

As a proud Vaio Z owner (and at the same time a poorly payed PhD student), I opted for the cheap Z with the 128GB SSD and I am already almost at full capacity.
I am looking for someway to expand my available storage. SD cards would be one option but high capacity ones are expensive, read/write speeds are not that good and I have had reliability issues with most removable media I've used in the past so I would not want to put my work-critical files on them.
I have come across these expressCard based SSD drives:
Amazon.com: Wintec FileMate 48GB Ultra ExpressCard Solid State Drive 3FMS4D48M-WR - PCI-e, Mini USB 2.0: Electronics
that seem to provide relatively good performance. However they seem a bit unreliable from the reviews, so I am still not particularly keen on getting one.
Has anyone come across any viable alternatives to the above drives?

I was thinking USB 3.0 adapter but then I would have to buy a USB 3 external Disk capable of 100+ MB speeds... and not very portable
why not a expresscard SSD?

I've had my eye on the Sony Vaio VPCZ11 however, I would like to add an external hard drive for data storage, is the USB port the only way of hooking up an external hard drive? How come a high end notebook like this doesn't have a eSATA port?

Here's my story and, let's say, my analysis:
I bought a generic 2 HD sata2 RAID1 enclosure based on the chipset Silicon Image SteelVine 5744. It can be used in USB or eSATA2. This embedded chipset (named SiL5744) is known (understand "claimed") to auto-handle Sata I/II and host sata2 controllers that not support the port multiplier feature. The HD are two Samsung F1 1To. There's no jumper to rollback to SATA 1.5Go on them, you can only do it by flashing the HD's bios, however we don't need to do it as I wrote just before, the SiL5744 supports SATA 3Go natively.
The enclosure works pretty well with USB, but *not* in eSATA : the E6500 freezes/hangs just after the POST step (a potential driver issue with the installed vista 64bits is not the reason then). As soon has I disconnect the eSATA cable, the system recovers and continues as normal.
What I've tried/done so far :
Both E6500's BIOS SATA mode AHCI and IRRT mode were tested,
Intel Matrix driver and software was updated to the latest 8.7.0.1007 version (AHCI and IRRT),
The SiL5744 chip was upgraded to its latest firmware as well (in case of...)
In order to verify the esata cable, the HDs and the enclosure itself, I succeed to :
- Use the enclosure's RAID1 feature when using the USB connection, I could partition, format, and read/write on the logical volume
- directly connect *one* HD (Samsung F1 1To) to the E6500's esata port -(I have a sata2esata cable), Vista installed it and I was able to use it as normal, even the hotswap feature seemed to work fine (I unkindly removed it). I could so test both HD individually this way... On the enclosure hardware side, everything looks fine then.
An IMPORTANT thing : The E6500's ICH8/9-M sata host controller seems to support the Port Multiplier feature *ONLY* on sata port 0 -as a bubble message from the Intel Matrix soft sometimes shows up-, but this is exactly where the internal HD is plugged on the motherboard I found nowhere you can change the internal sata port ID (switch,bios,ect...). I think this is the key of the problem that seems to be a dumb port conflict, because the esata port is in fact the port sata 4 (the DVDRW drive is sata 1, dock's esata is 5 for instance). If somebody knows how to swap the sata port ID, I think I won't be toasted !

Is there a way to create a Windows Vista Installation disc from either the Hidden Partition or Recovery discs? I am not talking about a "Factory Restore"... I am talking about installing a clean version of Windows using the product key on the bottom of the laptop and then using the sony website or Recovery discs to install the drivers.

I tried installing DVD writer software and my internal DVD stopped working. With an external DVD writer connected via USB, I tried to fix/repair Windows XP. My internal DVD was still not working. I wanted to completely format (as I accumulated lot of junk files over the years) my HDD and do a fresh install using my external DVD writer. At this point my external DVD was detecting via USB option at boot-up. For some reason, I could only replace the WINDOWS folder and all other files were not deleted.
I took my HDD out, connected it as an external HDD via USB to another laptop and did start -> control panel - > Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> storage -> Disk Management: Delete Partition and Format my HDD.................

clean Windows 7 (64) installation. My guide is more of a 'bare bones' installation as I only installed what is needed for functionality of the big features. The guide is incomplete. I will continue to update the document as I make more progress. Please feel free to report anything you find that is incorrect etc.
keep in mind this is for a FZ280 E/B, I have no idea if it will work on other FZ models.
I am still having problems with the Bluetooth driver/software and the Wireless Switch Utility (what exactly is this needed for?). I believe the functionality for Bluetooth is dependent on the something to do with the Wireless Switch Utility. However I haven't had any luck installing either option.
There appears to be a problem with the power management. I unplugged the notebook for the first time and the battery went from 95% to 60% within 5 - 10 minutes. Any thoughts will be appreciated. I will be researching for a solution as well.
Below is the attached guide and a link to download the drivers I have used for the installation.

Has anyone any experience with these ExpressCards that modern laptops seem blighted with?
For my Aspire 2920, I've purchased a 34mm adapter to provide firewire sockets. It fits the 34/54 socket and sort of works, although I need to look at some software problems.
This is where the trouble starts. The card plugs into the wider slot, but then I attach a full-size firewire connector and its heavyish cable to the card. The card can rock sideways because, being a 34 mm card in a 54mm wide opening, there can be 20 mm of sideways movement at the front while the back is held by the internal connector. Plugging and unplugging the firewire connector wobbles the card in the slot and it is obviously connecting and disconnecting rapidly without going through the software remove process.
The whole mechanical arrangement seems hopeless. The card isn't secure and there is no button to unlock and remove the card like on the old pcmcia slots. I suppose I could carve a 20mm piece of something to wedge the card into place, but maybe someone here knows how it should be done.
Surely the ExpressCard system can't be designed to be as bad as this?

I was told that this notebook is having expansion slot that is compatible with both PCMCIA & expresscard/54, how true is it?
Most important is whether this is USB 2.0 emulated slot or true PCIe 1x slot?
Or, is this notebook having 2 slots, 1 PCMCIA and 1 expresscard/54?
Expresscard/54 seems not very common today compared to /34.

I bought one of these for my mac , it fits in the slot fine and you have to push it in until it clicks and is flush with the mac, but when i insert a flash memory card and pull the card out it pulls the entire reader out as well.
Now normally to remove the expresscard reader you press it in until it clicks and is spring loaded and pops out so you can remove it.
But why when i remove a snug fitting memory card is the entire reader pulling out , unless i use one hand to keep the reader in place as i use the other hand to pull out the memory card , is this normal?

I have just successfully installed 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium on my SR41M, along with some 64-bit sony drivers I managed to find...
However, in my device manager I am left with a single device unaccounted for, listed merely as "Base System Device". I have absolutely no idea what it is.
what driver I might need to install to resolve this..?

I have a VGN-FZ240E that has some issues. I am sure that previous virus removal efforts have damaged my operating system beyond reasonable repair. The only real solution I believe is to reinstall Vista. 2 Problems, 1 I do not have the recovery dvds, 2 the system will not me make a recovery set. I can see a recovery partition on the disk when I ran Easues Partition Manager. In fact, I copied the recovery partition to a logical drive I created on the hard disk. So now I can see it in explorer, and browse it.
I am wondering if I copy the recovery partition to a new hard drive can I then start the new drive as a boot device and reinstall Vista from it ? If I can then my plan would be to do the transfer files and settings from original drive to get me back up and running correctly. This would also archive all my stuff in case of an unfortunate mishap. I understand I will need to reinstall apps and such I just do not want to have to dish out the extra $30 for the disks. And I have already combed this machine and cannot locate the WUA files.

I am having a hard time deciding between the PC card slot and the expresscard slot offered on the E6400.
I own several PC cards and some express cards, so I would probably need an adapter to go from one to the other regardless.
Which adapter is easier to use? There is also the E6500 which has both slots. The only problem is that it weighs 1lb.

I got my m1730 in the mail a week ago or so, and its awesome of course. But all the reviews I saw of them state that it has a remote that fits nicely into the
expresscard slot. But no where on the dell site does it allow me to buy one, nor did it allow me to add one to my configuration when i purchased the laptop. Did Dell stop offering the expresscard remote?

I just got a W540 running Windows 7 x64 at work. Â I have an ExpressCard ethernet adapter (A Belkin f5u250), and I'm having trouble getting it working.
Â
I used this card on a W510 running Windows XP for years with no issues.  I can still plug it into that laptop and have it work just fine.  However, when I plug it into the W540, nothing happens.  Windows does nothing.  It doesn't act like it's trying to identify hardware, go find drivers, or anything.  Nothing shows up or changes in the device manager, either.
Â
I've tried doing the "add legacy hardware" thing in device manager, but I've had no luck with that, either. Â If I do an autodetect, it doesn't find anything, and if I manually browse to the driver, it then brings me to a list of devices, and the list is empty.
Â
Is there something special I need to do to enable the expresscard slot, or enable plug and play for it, or something?

eSATA port has 3 Gbit/s bandwidth, so I wouldn't get about 300-375 MB/s transfering data?

i can't get my xps 435 mt (running vista 64 home premium) to recognise my new seagate back armour 2tb drive via eSATA. The drive works fine with USB connection, but is not recognised via eSATA. In BIOS the drive doesn't appear in the list of drives under eSATA either.
I searched and found a similar post but it was someone with RAID setup and the solution there doesn't work for me. Checking for relevant 435mt updates on the dell site - I can't update intel matrix storage manager r205899, as you need to be set as RAID in the BIOS for it to work. When I install r205900, it installs some files, but nothing happens.
I have looked for driver or firmware updates for my eSATA drive on the seagate site - nothing there either. Can't think of what else to try... Dell support will charge to help me since I'm out of warranty (even though it's highly likely to be an issue with the eSATA since I got my system).
