View 10 RepliesI just bought a Z116GX/S and I'm considering swapping the optical drive with a hard drive. I found this:

I contacted them, and apparently it should be compatible with the new Z.
I created this thread with the intention of grouping all who have, or in the process, or are planning to upgrade to Windows 7 x64 for the XPS M1330.
Personally I'm currently on Vista Ultimate x86 (because it's a Product Red) and I'm entitled to a free Windows 7 Professional x64 license from my school. I've read that it's not possible to upgrade directly from higher-to-lower (in terms of level of OS).
Like for mine I'd only be able to upgrade directly if I had a Windows 7 Ultimate license.
Hence for my case, I would like to seek the advice from the helpful fellas here on my upgrade (sequence) options.
Currently I have 2 partitions, as per default. C drive as OS and main partition of 285GB and D drive as RECOVERY of 9.99GB.
Questions:
1) If I were to install Windows 7 on a newly created partition, ie. F drive (as my DVDRW is on E drive now), would I be able to format my C drive (after backing up data from it) and turn it into a storage drive?
2) If 1) is possible, should I partition F drive to 20-25GB as the norm capacity for Windows 7 OS installation, or should I allocate more space? (I'm asking this because I've never done an OS-only partition + Data-only partition in any computer I own because I don't see the usefulness of it LAST TIME.
3) If I had an OS partition in F drive, 20-25GB, and the Data partition on C drive (after formatting Vista), would I be able to swap these 2 drive letters so C drive becomes my Windows 7 OS Drive and F drive becomes my Data drive?
4) If that's the case, would I still be needing D drive (RECOVERY), or can I format->delete it?
5) Having 20-25GB in C drive, assuming I've swapped F drive with C drive, where would I be installing my applications? Do I need to install applications into the OS drive or can I install it in the Data drive? Because if it were the case that applications NEED to be installed into the OS drive, I'd need to allocate a little more space in now-C drive, right?
The new Z series with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit is now on sale in Australia at about the same price as its Vista predecessor.
I had hoped that the new Z night have had a faster CPU or some other improvement over the previous model but, apart from the new OS,
it has the same specs as the previous version, with with the same P9700 (2.80 GHz) CPU, 6 GB DDR3 SDRAM (upgradeable up to 8 GB) and NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS with 256 MB SDRAM.
I saw that some Sony windows 7 drivers were now online. I was just wondering if the drivers for the sz6 are available?

View 10 Replies View RelatedIs it me, or do these massive Official VAIO blah Series Owners Threads not work to well?
They're tooo big and very dificult to find things buried in them.
I think forums work better when you have a specific problem and start a new thread on that... then people respond to help in that thread... And the conversation is so much less likely to go off on a tangent...
I.e. use these forums how they are normally used... One thread per subject. Most people are pretty good a adding the model in the subject if it's needed. This should make it a whole lot easier to browse thru and find stuff that it is right now...
I need to get another HDD caddy so that I can put two HDD's in to my 1737. Does anyone know where I can get one from (I'm in Australia)

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've just run into a major headache with a Travelmate 4404WLMi given to me by a friend. It appears that when he decided to keep the hard drive, he also lost track of the hard drive caddy for the machine.
I haven't had too much luck finding a caddy on eBay. I think part of the problem is, though I was able to find a service manual for the computer, Acer seems to have gotten confused and listed the part number for the TM4000 caddy in the service manual instead of this one. There's a picture right next to it for a caddy that looks entirely different from where the screw holes are on my 4404. The notebook disassembly guide is also all wrong for this unit.
Now, my question is, in the search for caddies on eBay I happened to notice that the one for the Aspire 3610 looks exactly like what I need. Would anyone happen to know if that caddy's the solution to my dilemma?
i just got an nc2400, seems to be a pretty great machine maybe greater with some optimizations
-overclocking. it seems very quiet and cool, has anyone overclocked with success?
-hdd in optical bay caddy, i want to know more about this. mainly, is the optical drive SATA, or would it basically be the same PATA interface as the old HDD?
im thinking the best thing for this laptop is either a PCMCIA SSD or PCMCIA to SATA for an at least normal hard drive speed.
unless mini pcie is the way to go? if anyone else has tried and succeeded at addressing the problem of slow hdd interface, id like to know your experience. i tried the intel 5100 mini card in the slot, said incompatible wifi device remove and restart at the bios. i guess this could be a general thing, with chipsets or something.
My laptop is Acer Aspire E5-572G. Im having problems connecting a Samsung 840 EVO SSD through a 2nd disk caddy.
I mean, it cannot be recognized at all even in BIOS. I am thinking to install new BIOS system , but when searching for it , I don't find anything and I don't want to flash wrong BIOS update.Â

It is exactly this model , I have entered the serial number I got from Ace's system information software. Any way to recognize the 2nd disk caddy along with the SSD?
i want to use the DVD tray to add a 2nd hard drive using one of the many 2nd HD Hard Drive Caddy Trays i see online, but i want to use a solid state drive in it. Can this be done? From what i ascertain via product literature, it appears that any caddy tray i see online says "accepts 2.5' 12.7MM SATA HDD only" or some such." While there are many SSD's that are 2.5 inch, I've only seen ones that are either 7mm or "7mm (with 9.5mm adapter)." Is there a product (either a T520-compatible 9.5mm caddy tray or a 12.77mm SSD) that can make this work?Â
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of removing my DVD drive and replacing it with a caddy and hard drive as explained here.
I don't use the DVD drive very often and would much prefer a 500GB or 1TB hard drive in there. The DVD drive can then be used externally via the eSATA port using this cable.
The ideal solution would be to use this NewmodeUS caddy as it supports the larger 12.7mm 1TB 2.5" hard drives and has a removable faceplate. The problem is the price.
At $55 including postage to the UK plus customs, VAT and clearance fees on top it's going to work out pretty expensive for what is essentially a slimline SATA to SATA extension

I just noticed that if you go to Acer support page you will find that in some laptops there will be Acer official drivers for Windows 7. So if you have windows 7 and you need some drivers for your hardware to work ok, you might be lucky and find the right drivers there. There are some Acer's applications there as well.
Just choose your laptop and then in the Operating system drop down menu check if there is a Windows 7 option and pick the Windows 7 version you have, 32-bit or 64-bit. They are not all there that you might need but I guess in a couple of weeks more and more drivers are going to be uploaded on the site and more laptops are going to be supported.
I was wondering who else out there has a dv6, which model and what you think of it!
I've had my dv6 for a day now, specs in my sig. I've not had a lot of brand new laptops, actually only one before this and few powerful ones, but so far I am very impressed.
I have a couple of things in my device manager that are unknown devices since i installed RC, I have installed the card reader, it's not bluetooth or a tv tuner, does anyone have any idea what it could be? Everything I can think of is installed and working.
I love the design, the white lights, touchpad button and the other buttons, I love the keyboard and touchpad and the lit up HP logo on the top of the lid. The only thing I don't like so far is the headphone/mic jacks are on the front. Otherwise top marks to HP! I can't believe how solid it feels

Update: Official ATi Catalyst 10.3 Suite Available Now
We are all waiting on a refresh of the Dell Studio XPS 1645/1647 to include the 5000 series ATI graphics cards. So to get the message across I have come up with a little thing called "Operate GPU Refresh". If you have been following the iPhone/AT&T you should know of the "Operation Chokehold" that iPhone users took part in to try to get the message across the the AT&T network needs upgrading.
But instead of trying to take down Dell, we will simply be trying to get the message across to them that we want the new cards, and since every other manufacturer pretty much already offers them we "would" rather buy their competition.
On March 30th of 2010 all users who want to participate will visit the "Dell Chat" PC/Laptop sales chat and ask when the 5000 series will be available. Also chime in on the fact that competitors such as HP already have these newer graphics cards available and you are tired of waiting, and if they can't give a solid reason just say "I guess I will go with HP" or whichever company you feel is the next alternative to you.
Goal:
Get the message across that we as customers want the latest hardware.
Get the message across that Dell is lagging behind their competition and if we have to wait any longer we will forget about Dell and buy their competition (in theory).
So set your calendars for March 30th. Dell "D-Day". Us notebook review members telling Dell what we want, and that we want it NOW.
