Sony :: SZ Power Fault
Jan 19, 2009
Last week I bough a Vaio SZ71N/C an today I noticed a weird sensation when I touch the palm rest. On a light touch it feels like there is a little bit of electrical current on the palm rest.
When I unplug the machine this effect stops, so it does seemto be related to the power connection. Maybe there is a fault in a power connection somewhere in the machine....
Has anyone experienced anything similar and do you think his could be a fault in the internal wiring?

Since buying my Vaio 3 months ago I have been plagued with this notion that the power barrel (left side) will snap off.. when I push the barrel in it goes in slightly, it moves when I push it.. I wanted to know if it is supposed to be like this or if its a fault.

The bottom plastic was developing a series of cracks so I bought a new base on eBay.
I basically had to take the entire laptop apart (per the 8600 Service Manual, including video card and processor cooling fan, etc) and I put it back together with a new base...

I've just noticed a dark line has appeared on my M1330 led screen- right across the top.... it goes right across the screen and is about 3mm thick.
You need to look right at the top (above the XPS M1330 text). It's there all the time! What can I do?

Not sure how to check / fault find the built-in Bluetooth on my Studio 1558. I installed a Logitech Bluetooth mouse on it about two months ago, and mostly it works well. But this afternoon there is suddenly no response to the mouse. (It worked this morning.) It seems that the laptop's Bluetooth has disconnected for some reason - doing a Bluetooth search with my cellphone picks up the mouse but not the laptop. I've put new batteries in the mouse, made sure it's switched on, clicked it's Connect switch. I also rebooted the computer. I've tried the F2 comms on/off function key. None of this worked. The built-in broadband comms is working fine.

I have a T430 with i7+ nvidia nvs 5400M.
Â
I upgraded to 8.1, everything went smoothly, installed the drivers from lenovo update and windows update. At random times, typically when I play flash content or use metro apps, explorer.exe crashes, windows try to restart it and it goes an infinite loop with flashing screen. I can stop it only by cold reboot, which leads to work loss.
Â
The event viewer showed ntdll.dll related error in explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe, and after contacting microsoft support, they checked my dump files and we found that it was nvidia driver related problem specifically :
Â
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID:Â NULL_CLASS_PTR_WRITE_c0000005_nvumdshimx.dll!Unknown.
Â
I installed versions 320.92, 326.19, 327.23 and none of them work.
Â
If I try to install the latest lenovo windows 8 version of the driver, i get black screen after the windows boot screen.
Â
So I am in a situation that nvidia support tells me to contact lenovo, lenovo support told me that despite this windows 8.1 compatibility list [URL] , they do not support windows 8.1, and I should contact Microsoft, and of course Microsoft tells me that they are not in charge of developing graphic drivers (true).
I cannot work on my laptop since it is crashing every 30 minutes or so, and I don't want to rollback to windows 7. What should  I do?

my laptop is not charging from the AC even when it is plugged in and is draining the batteries. As well, the battery seem to drain even in hibernation mode. I have had this problem twice and it has been fixed by sony under warranty. However, the warranty will expire in October and I don't know what I'll do when that happens. I certainly do not have the money to keep fixing this nor to buy another notebook.

Less than 24 hours ago, I backed my TZ130 up to my desktop system at home. This morning, I can't get it to power on at all. I press the power switch but nothing happens. I plug the charger in but no light come on the TZ indicating that it is charging. Drag!
I've helped Sony sell many T series laptops over the last few year, and I've owned a TR1, T340P and now this TZ130. This latest notebook seems snakebit, though. A little over a year ago I broke the screen in some way that I still don't know ($700 repair). I had to send the notebook back for the hinge/wiring inspection, and now this.
Well, time to pull the trusty TR1 off the shelf, update the software, and install the backup that I did yesterday.

I have a gently used Vaio with power issues. The battery is shot. The jack is broken inside, and the power adapter I have doesn't work so well either.
Rather than replacing two of those three items, can I power this thing with a USB cord? I have seen them for sale for iphones and mp3 players...will that work for the Vaio?

Tray icon says the battery is charging and the computer is running of AC power. However, the battery is being drained and if i pull out the battery, the computer shuts off. I can sometimes get the battery to recharge if i shut down the computer and leave it off for awhile.
I thought it was a bad AC adapter, but i tried another and had the same problem.
Does this sound like a software problem, or is my adapter jack bad (where the ac adapter plugs into the laptop)?

I've been spending some time playing around with all the new Z's power options (which I assume are mostly related to Windows 7), but I find that I like the fact that each of the 3 "modes" can be assigned a different overall profile, with different behaviors whether plugged in or on battery.
So I can use "Auto" mode for daily use (where I'm generally plugged in) with Nvidia graphics and pretty much everything set for good performance without excess heat production. Then if I simply unplug to do some surfing for a couple hours in front of the couch, "Auto" drops down to the Intel adapter but keeps reasonable performance settings, Aero, etc .....

How sturdy is the power connector on the Z? The power cord is putting quite a bit of pressure on the connector.
The connector is made of plastic, not metal. I have my doubts about the longevity of this kind of connector.

I have a sony vaio vgn nr 260e. The laptop will not turn on nor will the battery charge.
I am thinking it is the DC jack on the back of the laptop that is the culprit, but 100% sure.
The green light on the AC adapter comes on and according to my voltage tester the end of the cord has power. My multimeter is broken and have yet to replace it.
I bought a new DC jack, for a couple of bucks, but have not put it in yet. I have not found any good instructions on how to do that. I would prefer not to take my whole laptop apart to change it but if i have to i will.

I'm typing this on my other computer, but my Z has mysteriously encountered some power problems all of a sudden.
I can't turn it on. It just happened all of a sudden. No noise, no lights, no movement.
I did manage to turn it on by taking out the battery, unplugging it, and waiting 6-8 hours afterwards, it would turn on, and in the middle of booting up, it turns off. If I'm lucky, it'll make it all the way into windows and then shut off again.
I have to mention that I have opened up the laptop previously about a month ago, and cleaned the vents and fans off with compressed air, and applied AS5 to the CPU and GPU. Not sure if that's related, but that was a while ago.

I have CR590 with Windows 7 installed. Recently have updated SFEP, Sony Shared Library, VAIO Event Service and VAIO Power Management to the latest versions from ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com.
Results:
1) "Capture" button started to work, it hadn't worked before, therefore all functional buttons work except AV Mode (I haven't installed Instant mode software)
2) VAIO profiles disappeared from PM settings — but this not a problem, I think I can leave with self configured profiles .....

So my brand new SR490 is already having some weird power issue. What happens is, the adapter stops powering the computer. This started happening randomly last week. I would be sitting there on the computer, and the screen would dim (I have it set to do this when it goes onto battery power).
I would move the adapter around, make sure it's plugged in right, but that didn't change anything. After a few minutes,
it would switch back to AC power by itself. It was worse last night, when the battery actually died because it wasn't getting a charge. The computer was just sitting on the desk and it kept switching between AC power and the battery .....

I've been all over the internet, gathering whatever info I can find, but I'm stuck. It's a Vaio PCG-FRV26 (PCG-9J5L) that just shut down one day, had a very slight 'burn' smell & will not power on, no lights. Opening it up it was full of dust balls & the fans were filthy - cleaned it real nice with vacuum & compressed air. I replaced the power jack, had it tested & there definitely is power to the board, also had the AC adapter/charger tested & it's good. I also played with various combinations of RAM chips in & out, re-set button, on/off with adapter & battery in/out combinations, holding on button variations etc. Still no lights or power. I've opened it up 3 times now, everything looks new/intact/great.
I have a PDF manual for this series, but cannot find the CMOS battery in the laptop! I don't think the manual is that great, not enough info, detailed explode schematic is not enough, tricky to follow, says where the CMOS/RTC bat is but I can't find it. Is it under the motherboard? do I have to remove MB?
If laptop did overheat - can I re-set it?

I am having problems with my WD Passport USB 320 GB drive losing power sometimes when various schedlued backup programs are supposed to run or simply when accessing the drive to open files. Have it plugged in to the USB port closest to where I am sitting, closest to front of my FW. When power is lost, I can restart what I am doing and it comes alive again with no problems but it is sort of irritating. I am running Vista home premium 32 bit.
what I need to look for to solve this problem. The WD drive is new, just a few months old. The drive has no included AC adapter or anything like that.

I have an Acer Aspire One laptop and can use, with the drive's power adaptor, a SONY DRX-S70U-R external drive.
However, the Acer won't power -- through just the USB hookup to the external drive -- the SONY drive without the SONY power adaptor.
I would like for my Acer and external drive truly to operate off battery power in those cases where I need to do so.
Is there some type of external battery that could power the SONY external drive for its use with my Acer Aspire One?
