Feb 8, 2009my laptop hard drive stop working is not recognized by the OS indicate no hd found, therefore i need to replace it. but i do not know how to do it. how to remove the hd, how to find it, etc.

Sony :: SZ650N/C With Windows 7
Oct 25, 2009I went to the sony support page and i saw that the Sony SZ650 series is not eligible for upgrade. Bummer. But I noticed that regardless, people are finding ways around this and still installing WIn7, while getting the FN buttons to work.
Does anyone have a guide on how to install Win7 32-bit onto the SZ650N/C? I know the Win7 64-bit is made, but im more interested in the 32-bit.
Also, I noticed on the sony ftp site, there are more updated sony drivers. Is it possible to install the newer sony drivers (i.e. on the SZ650 support page, a sony driver is v2.0.0, while on the ftp site i find a sony driver v5.6.0), is it a good idea to update to the v5.6.0?

Mar 27, 2009Got a used VGN-SZ650N last nite, installed with Vista Business Edition, seller already burn me a set of recovery DVD to restore back to Vista Business Edition. This morning I wipe out my C drive partition and installed XP professional from scratch and leave the recovery partition (hidden) alone. Tonight my wife changed her mind and want me to put Vista business back to this laptop. Now I have XP on C Drive and a set of recovery DVD, what is the quickest way for me to restore Vista Business back to the laptop.

Oct 8, 2009I have a sz650n that will not boot -
Very little water made its way onto the keyboard, and probably leaked down and killed the motherboard. I bought a used motherboard from a semi-local store - same symptoms - few lights come on, fan comes on, no boot. Took motherboard and laptop back to the store, the guy said he tried 2-3 other motherboards, all with the same symptoms. It *is* possible all 3-4 boards he had are bad, but unlikely?
I'm pretty sure the power board is okay. He tried another CPU and memory, same symptoms.
I am looking for any advice you might have. I really need to get it fixed. I am still 99% sure its the motherboard, but the fact that all the ones he tried yielded the same results, maybe something else went out as well?
Sony :: SZ6 (SZ650N) Poor Build Quality
Dec 23, 2009In addition to having a bad hard disk (after less than a year of ownership it totally failed, corrupted data, bla bla bla), the welds on the palm rest screw posts (see picture attachment) have come undone. I have been able to fix this for the time being with krazy glue, but it's not perfect. Furthermore, because of this, the plastic piece on the CD drive side broke at the incredibly flimsy joint with the main carbon chassis. Also fixed for the time being with krazy glue.
The touchpad comes on reversed from time to time, there's a ton of bloatware installed by default, no official 64bit support (although I was able to get it working with help from this forum), bla bla bla. My friends think all of this is hillarious, as I "overpayed" for a Sony that has been a real bear in terms of quality.
I can't complain about the design, weight, battery life, gorgeous screen, or performance however... but the quality issues are canceling out the positives, I'd say overall it's impossible to give the SZ6 a better grade than a B: it's a pleasure to lug around (I'm moving around every day) but the poor quality means you can never relax.

Feb 26, 2009who opened I believe Z and connected a hard drive to dvd drive connector while leaving dvd drive in for cosmetic reasons. Can't find this thread. Where exactly can the hard drive go? Inside the tray?
I am afraid there will be too much vibration if I put regular HD there. For this reason I would rather put there SSD but is there a way to make this a primary OS drive? Seems like last bios allows to boot from optical drive.

Feb 12, 2010I currently have an FE790p. After a few years of use, its getting a bit slow, and I would really like to upgrade to Windows 7 (currently running Vista Business). I get Windows 7 for free through my school, and rather than simply upgrading, I want to do a clean install. I also want to upgrade my current 120GB 5400RPM HDD to a new, bigger 7200RPM HDD.
Is it possible to simply buy a larger drive, install it, and then boot up the computer with windows 7 from a USB flash drive? I'm not sure if this would work, as there would be no drivers present, etc.
I would really like to be able to just keep my old hard drive and all of its contents, and possibly use it as sort of an external hard drive. Is this possible? Furthermore, if I can keep the old hard drive, is there a way to connect it as an external hard drive, and still boot from it?

Jul 5, 2009i noticed my computer only has a maximum of 287 GB while it is advertised as 320 GB. Is this because something is taking up the rest of the space(ie: OS)? But even so would it really take that much space and shouldn't the hard drive in Local disk (C properties still say it's out of 320 GB?

Aug 18, 2009I purchased a VGN-SR430J/B and I cleaned it with killdisk and installed windows 7 32bit.
This model comes with a 320GB HDD, yet when I go to my computer it says that I have 273GB free of 287GB total. So I assume the 14GB (287-273) being used is somehow the 2.5 GB Windows 7 32bit. But 320 - 287 is 33GB, where did it go? Where can I look?

Oct 23, 2009I was checking my hard drive with hdtune and saw something interesting...the program said that my hard drive is SATA I. Am I mistaken or is this for real? I have a CTO VGN-FW490J, got it in June 2009. The hard drive is a Fujitsu MHZ2320BJ. I did a quick google and the descriptions say it is SATA II, so I'm confused. Is it the motherboard that determines the SATA speeds or the hard drive? What's even more confusing is that in the official FW thread, someone said they installed a SSD and they're getting sequential reads at about 250mb/sec so that person definitely is in the SATA II range. I attached an image of the part that shows my hard drive info.

Jun 25, 2009I bought an FW configured with a 320gb 5400rpm hard drive, originally with a view to taking it out and putting in a faster one, 7200rpm or even an ssd. However, sony said this would void the warranty so I decided to just stick wit the 5400rpm option.
So my question is that if I bought a 7200rpm drive now, or an ssd when they are slightly cheaper, would I be able to slot that in,
but then if something went wrong with the laptop and it had to be returned, simply slip in the original 5400rpm hard drive so the sony guys wouldn't know the difference?? Or would they be able to tell I had changed the drive?

Apr 8, 2010I'm considering a Vaio Z. I would have bought the latest one, but unfortunately the headphone plug is in the front which is a deal breaker for me as I most often use it on the treadmill to watch movies and it needs to "stand up".
So, when looking at previous Z's I noticed the headphone plug is one the side (as it should be. if you ask me). Blu-ray is a must and I want SSD. I found a few models with Blu-ray, but it seems that all models only have a regular 320GB hard drive, so my first question is:
- Does a Z of previous model with Blu-ray and SSD exist?

Jan 10, 2009I am looking at one of the 7200rpm 320gb drives from either Hitachi, Fijitsu, Seagate and Western Digital.
Sony says the systems are not designed to be upgraded (by the end user). I guess they want only overpriced tech to do it. I have already popped my system apart and put it back together so I know how to do it. I have been building and repairing my own PC since 1990 so I am not afraid to do this. I would hate to buy the drive and find out that the BIOS will not support it.
Has anyone had any issues with Hard Drive upgrades on the SZ 330p/b model?
