Sony :: Sz650n (dead Mobo)
Oct 8, 2009
I have a sz650n that will not boot -
Very little water made its way onto the keyboard, and probably leaked down and killed the motherboard. I bought a used motherboard from a semi-local store - same symptoms - few lights come on, fan comes on, no boot. Took motherboard and laptop back to the store, the guy said he tried 2-3 other motherboards, all with the same symptoms. It *is* possible all 3-4 boards he had are bad, but unlikely?
I'm pretty sure the power board is okay. He tried another CPU and memory, same symptoms.
I am looking for any advice you might have. I really need to get it fixed. I am still 99% sure its the motherboard, but the fact that all the ones he tried yielded the same results, maybe something else went out as well?

I went to the sony support page and i saw that the Sony SZ650 series is not eligible for upgrade. Bummer. But I noticed that regardless, people are finding ways around this and still installing WIn7, while getting the FN buttons to work.
Does anyone have a guide on how to install Win7 32-bit onto the SZ650N/C? I know the Win7 64-bit is made, but im more interested in the 32-bit.
Also, I noticed on the sony ftp site, there are more updated sony drivers. Is it possible to install the newer sony drivers (i.e. on the SZ650 support page, a sony driver is v2.0.0, while on the ftp site i find a sony driver v5.6.0), is it a good idea to update to the v5.6.0?

This morning I wipe out my C drive partition and installed XP professional from scratch and leave the recovery partition (hidden) alone. Tonight my wife changed her mind and want me to put Vista business back to this laptop. Now I have XP on C Drive and a set of recovery DVD, what is the quickest way for me to restore Vista Business back to the laptop.

In addition to having a bad hard disk (after less than a year of ownership it totally failed, corrupted data, bla bla bla), the welds on the palm rest screw posts (see picture attachment) have come undone. I have been able to fix this for the time being with krazy glue, but it's not perfect. Furthermore, because of this, the plastic piece on the CD drive side broke at the incredibly flimsy joint with the main carbon chassis. Also fixed for the time being with krazy glue.
The touchpad comes on reversed from time to time, there's a ton of bloatware installed by default, no official 64bit support (although I was able to get it working with help from this forum), bla bla bla. My friends think all of this is hillarious, as I "overpayed" for a Sony that has been a real bear in terms of quality.
I can't complain about the design, weight, battery life, gorgeous screen, or performance however... but the quality issues are canceling out the positives, I'd say overall it's impossible to give the SZ6 a better grade than a B: it's a pleasure to lug around (I'm moving around every day) but the poor quality means you can never relax.

I am at my wits end with my e1705. I had a sudden meltdown about 2 weeks ago... screen went scrambled, BSOD,etc...
Performed diagnostic, memory on video card came back as bad. Replaced with new card (from Dell), reinstalled OS, completely reinstalled nVidea drivers from Dell (Used driver cleaner too)...
Everything went smooth for a couple hours after this was completed yesterday (full diagnostic showed no errors), but after booting up today, after about 5 or 10 minutes of use screen freezes and turns either solid cyan or black... a small pattern of thin lines appears also.

I received my Vaio Z21WN/B last week and it is a spectacular laptop. However I was pretty miffed when I found there was a glowing pixel in the middle of the screen.
Upon inspection on a black background I have managed to single out over SEVEN of these pixels, all of them seem white apart from one which is red.
Now the pixels are very hard to see, some more difficult than others and you do have to look for them to find them but it's like anything of this nature, once you know they're there you just go looking for them and they gradually become more annoying each time
I bought the laptop from an eBay seller and really it wasn't his fault for selling this as it was as the unit was sealed and he would not of known this until it was opened. It'd be pretty bad of me to ask for my money back when he was a private seller.
Do you reckon I'm within my right to phone Sony and ask for a replacement screen or should I not bother?
any users on here who have dead pixels on their laptop screen and just put up with them? Is this a widespread problem with most people worldwide or is it just the select minority people such as myself that are bothered about it?

I just bought a vaio last night and I wanted to boot from my flash drive to use Gparted to change my partitions for a dual-booting laptop. so I download the BIOS update from sony eSupport and run it. I am not sure that it finished updating the bios but it turned off (by what seemed like having the power cut off). Now when I try to boot there is nothing except the CD light comes on and then goes off again. I did some googling and I think the BIOS is dead. this is really sad 'cause I just bought it last night. it is an older laptop and has no warranty and I can't bring it to sony to be serviced (too much $). did I just brick my laptop, or can I replace the bios easy?

On the back of my Sony laptop, the model says PCG-6L2L, but when I took it in to servicing to a SONY authorized dealer for a diagnosis, the paper it came back with said Model VGNSZ260P. What's up with that? Is this the same thing, just different numbers? My laptop is a Z series, but nowhere on my laptop does it say anything about Z series or VGN. Similarily, my friend just bought a brand new Z series laptop that was sold as a VGN (over $2500), yet again, on the back of his there is a PCG model number and nowhere does it say anything about VGN or Z series?
Secondly, and more importantly.
The diagnosis came back negative. Everything works (cpu, ram, video, lcd, etc etc), but the actual system board, motherboard, is dead. When I boot up, it shows the SONY screen and I can get to BIOS, but as soon as it hits bios, or about 5 seconds after SONY symbol, everything freezes.
Naturally, the $800 they wanted is ridiculous. I am very tech savvy, especially with computers, I've been building them for a very long time, but have little experience with laptops. I am convinced that I can fix this if I can find a motherboard for it....

Something very unexpected broke today. I'm not sure but I think my SZ360 speakers die on me. The headphone jack still work but nothing is coming out of the speakers above my keyboard.
I try the following
1. Mute and Unmute
2. Went to device manager, uninstall driver, restart, installer driver and restart
3. Went to every sound setting possible and play with it
My headphone jack is working fine but speaker is not. Any ideas why this is happen? My speakers die?
I also went to BIOS setting and allow turn the VAIO boot logo volume to level 8 but no sound at all. My headphone on the other hand have the VAIO boot sound.
Speakers is the last thing I expect to die on any laptop. Is there any other way I can accurately diagnose this problem? I want to make sure its my speakers before I search for replacement.

I have a FW-390J and yesterday I have noticed a dead pixel appeared at the lower left corner, that is new and was not there before..
This morning I found another dead pixel very near to the first one and if I focus enough I can see a couple of more fainted dots..
I feel a bit frustrated and disappointed. I had the same problem with a my previous Toshiba A300 which I replaced with this model

night before last a cup of water spilled over my keyboard. I quickly picked laptop up, dried it upside down then left it running. About an hour later I went to type something in and realised the keyboard wasnt working. I turned it off and took the battery and power supply off.
The next day I turned it back on and it was coming on but the keyboard still not working (if you press one key then another key would be pressed and 6 and w were pressed the whole time) so then we lifted the keyboard up and dried the area underneath with a hairdryer- only saw a few drops of water. Then tried turning it bakc on and it would come on but the keyboard still not working.
Then few hours later I tried turning it on again, and now, although the green light comes on and it sounds like it's gonna start, the screen is completely black.

I bought SONY VAIO VPCF115 Model Laptop from Best Buy in Austin,TX in Feb 2010.
Up till now everything was working perfectly fine , until today morning when I powered ON my laptop nothing would come up! NO DISPLAY! I tried taking out the battery and putting back again, tried removing RAM and all possible options tried! the laptop is powering ON but its not displaying anything! nor the Hard drive is being read.
I am currently in India on vacation and having this problem.I don't know whether this is covered with SONY VAIO warranty , b'caz I didn't buy the accidental warranty from Best Buy.
I gave my laptop at SONY SERVICE Center here in India and they told me the MOTHERBOARD IS faulty and its not functioning , hence they need to repair the motherboard! I was like WHAT? how can that be possible even in the first place.

I don't notice any artifacts but I just notice huge FPS hits. I also think my fan isn't running anymore but I am not sure. Does anyone one know what I should do now? Its out of warranty already.

I'm thinking of modding my i9300 to accept a 1710 mobo-- if I buy a motherboard with integrated graphics, will I be able to add a graphics card later on and disable the integrated graphics through bios, or does integrated graphics preclude adding a card later on?

My mobo has been going bad. I've been slowly losing functionality. First, my multimedia card slots stopped working, then one usb port, then all usb ports and lastly my bluetooth module is working. I've concluded that I must have a bad mobo.
Is that the right assessment?
If it is and the mobo needs replacing which mobo do I use?
But let me be more specific, there are two types of mobos, a full-featured and a de-featured. I'm positive that i have the full-featured mobo but my problem is finding the right mobo with the right product number. I've searched online and the product numbers are all over the place. What's really confusing me is that I've found the same product numbers being used for both full-featured and de-featured mobos. So this makes it difficult to know which one to buy.

I think my xps9300gen2 might have some major promblems.
My battery went bad........got the bad battery flash code and the battery lights on back would light up funky.
I bought a new battery and the light isn't flashing anymore, system recognizes and charges it, BUT when I unplug the AC power to run on battery I get artifacts then system freeezes. I tried a third battery but it's the same deal. Won't run on the batteries
I fear it's the mobo.
Anyone delt with something like this?

I have the Dell XPS M1530 laptop, and of course the motherboard is fried.
The laptop is no longer covered by warranty, and I dont want to buy a new mobo from Dell, because they charge a ridiculous amount of money.
Where can I buy a new mobo with the new non-faulty Nvidia chip? I don't want to buy one of the original ones because it will just overheat from the chip and burn up again.

My M1330 has developed the "ac adapter type unrecognised" problem which means a new mobo. But it may be. It's an early m1330 with the 633MHz FSB and 2.2GHz cpu.
Do you think Dell will be able to replace like with like? I'm rather hoping they'll give me a 2.4GHz with 800MHz FSB as replacement as that's the nearest CPU match without giving me something inferior.

Well dell came out and once again replaced the mobo today... making this the 3rd time this computer needed servicing... and to my surprise while test driving it today (after the guy left), the computer shut down after reaching over 100c on the ACPI temps...
funny thing is, i didnt smell anything burn, there was no heat at all, and everything seemed fine...
i unseated the heatsink and tried it again, sure enouh the same thing happened. the fan maxes out as soon as i start the PC, when it loads windows...
then once i get there, it completely stops... i mean the fan blade arent turning .....

so my i6400 came orig with 2x512 ram sticks, one per slot -- recently (i have it it 2+ years) i realized that i was having a RAM issue (BSOD + other windows errors pointed directly to this problem) and ordered 2 x 1 gig sticks of ram from
newegg...when i realized what the problem was i pulled out 1 of the 512 sticks and it worked fine -- without a problem
i recieved the 2 new sticks and put them in, tried to start up, no luck...
tried one stick, worked fine.
(turned off)
tried other new stick, worked fine
(turned off)
replaced the original stick, worked fine.
(turned off)
replaced orig stick #1 with the stick that i thought had died/was bad, worked.
(also dealt with the dell POST? diagnostics -- flashing lock indicators -- which told me there was a problem with the RAM).....

My laptop wont turn on at all, no lights at all. The power supply is fine, and I opened it up and found a few burnt capacitors. Ive searched on ebay for Aspire 3680 mobo but all have different model numbers to mine. My model number is DA0ZR1MB06D1 REV.D. Also on the RAM socket it has another number which is MBAZL060017090E53B2505 and below that it has 31ZR1MB00I0. I cannot find one on ebay with the same numbers as above. Will it make a difference if I get one which has a few numbers/letters which are different to my current one?

I just replaced the motherboard in the girlfriend's HP/Compaq NX9105 (died in a wine spill...). The new mobo boots, but the first message was "unsupported wireless network device detected" and the system went no further. So I removed the card figuring a BIOS upgrade would sort that, but then I am faced with the message "this motherboard does not support 82W CPU", and again the system goes no further. I have checked the parts list and there only seems to be one mobo for this model, although there is one figure different on the part number:
Old mobo SPS-370495-001
New mobo: SPS-370496-001
The only other difference I could find was the new mobo only has one CPU fan header, easily sorted.
Other details;
CPU Athlon 64 1800 Skt 754
1.5GB DDR1 (though just using 256 stick for testing)
Bios Ver F11, newest available F34.
AFAIK the 1800 was the slowest CPU offered on this model except for some that had an Athlon XP-M fitted.
This may just be a BIOS upgrade issue, and I can certainly enter setup, but at the moment I cannot get it past the error messages, so any pertinent advice gratefully received.

I've got a DV6000 here that seems to have some sort of motherboard or HDD problem.
I load up an XP Pro installation and everything seems to work fine until it gets to "Setup is now loading Windows" at which point the installation just hangs. Native SATA is turned off. Tried it twice, too.
I've tried the installation with a Windows 7 Beta DVD as well, and the installation also hangs shortly after Windows finishes loading its files. I tried Windows 7 with native SATA turned on and off.
I'm not 100% sure that the HDD is ok as I don't have anything with which to test it, but the installation will get past this point in my E6400.
I'm not that familiar with HP computers, so I'm wondering if I'm missing something obvious or if there's a hardware problem.

seeing as I'm getting ready for my 1330's second Mobo replacement, I've made a list of what to check after a mobo replacement. The first part of the checklist is what you really should test while the RegGuy's still on location and the second & third parts are what you need to verify (in most part) that the replacement mobo is indeed ok.
What the rep will check on your behalf is that the Notebook fires up and loads your OS. This of course implies that the power-on switch, monitor, hard drive, keyboard and trackpad are connected and that the main chips (cpu, graphics, chipset, audio, etc) are indeed functioning.
But that's about it so the rest is up to you ...
