I did buy a:
Item: Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache - OEM Scorpio Blue
But it looks as thought it needs a power lead to connect to it as it has an extra connection by the sata11 connection.
I'm owner of Vostro 1320. I've updated BIOS to last one A08, but I cannot find info what maximum size of hard disk it can handle.
I'm planning to put 1TB SATA 3 or 2 7200 rpm, will that work OK?
I have a Sony VGN-S260 laptop. I got it fixed and installed a Western Digital 250GB Scorpio Blue EIDE hard drive. I updated to the latest bios available and also installed WINXP SP3. The HDD is only detected as 137GB on the bios and 128GB roughly on windows. I heard that WINXP SP1 and above supported 48-bit LBA and I did not see an option to add partitions to utilize all space on my HDD. I also tried PM 8.0 and it did not see the extra space. I am in a bind and would like to use my space on the hard drive.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am thinking of upgrading the hard drive on my Dell E1405. I was just curious if there is some kind of limit as to how big a drive I can get or is just whatever my wallet will tolerate.
In addition, can anyone point me to the "correct" hard-drive that my laptop supports? (I'm assuming it's a SATA drive.)
I wasn't sure what type (if there is one) that I need to buy for my laptop. Just anything on amazon or fry.com, or something along those lines.
I have done some research, and found some 500gb SATA HDD's for laptops, but I have noticed that they are 5400rpm. The fastest large drive I have found is a new Hitachi, 320 7200rpm drive (which is supposedly coming out and will probly cost a fortune) Some told me that the speed doesn't make a difference when they are a big drive. If I get a 5400 rpm drive will it kill my gaming (oblivion, Half life 2, Bioshock, etc.
View 11 Replies View RelatedRecently my brand new studio 17 updated, about a week later I noticed that 50GB had gone missing! I of course called tech support to see if they could help (good luck) after spending hours on the phone they could not really solve the issue, asides from doing a factory reset.
Now again I am having this issue again, once Vista updated it is slowly eating away hard drive space. There is currently 31.4GB being used (yes, this includes all hidden files) on a 450GB hard drive, yet the system reports only 402 GB free space. Each day it decreases about 2-4 GBs ......
Just wondering to all those with an Ispiron 9300 what is the maximum supported hard drive size. According to dell chat it is 100Gb...but of course that doesn't mean anything. I have the 9300 with an SATA drive .

I consider buying a new notebook and T420 is a hot candidate for me. I'm not sure yet whether I would go for a Core i5 or i7 processor, however I'm sure I'd like to upgrade the RAM in the future and 16 GB . I found out in the Intel specifications that (not only) the i5 2540 and i7 2640 that are available in the T420 configurations support up to 16 GB RAM, however in the T420 specifications concerning those processors I found that only 8 GB of RAM are supported. AFAIK the memory controller is integrated in the processor in these cases, so is there another factor that limits the size to 8 GB, or is it only an improper information in the T420 specs?

ok i didnt panic. i tried to pop in the XP cd to reinstall windows. but to my surprise, the CD drive wasnt working! so i removed the CD drive and now i dont get any error except that i should restart the laptop.
so my question is: how do i reinstall XP without a CD drive?
i already have a 1GB USB drive lying around. i also have a IDE connector for my laptop HDD to connect to a working desktop with XP.
I am looking for the following bios:
Acer Aspire 5310, Intel 27A0 rev 3, 2008-12-08, v1.50
Do you have any idea where to get this, who to ask? Acer does not list it, does not respond properly and I could not find anything in the forum here.
I have an Acer Aspire 5310 laptop which appears to have a dead bios and i'm hoping someone can help me bring it back to life.
Although I'm not a complete novice with computers i have always avoided messing with things like the bios etc... so i'm struggling a little on what some of you would consider basic steps.
The Laptop powers on, the fan spins for a few seconds and the hard disk light comes on..... I've followed several threads on different forums which have led me to believe that it is the bios.
If i remove the battery, press and hold the fn + Esc keys and then plug in the ac adapter, the power light flashes orange for a second. While continuing to hold fn + Esc, if i press the power button the fan spins constantly and slightly louder than before... but nothing else happens???
I've tried to follow steps to flash the bios using a usb stick and the bios versions 1.50 from the acer website but to no avail.
Laptop is an Acer Aspire 1640. 2.26GHz, 2gb RAM.
Laptop was working fine with the factory Hitachi HTS541680J9AT00 80gb drive.
I purchased a Samsung HM160HC 160gb drive as it's supposed to be the fastest PATA laptop drive available.
I put it in and the laptop just kept saying "no operating system found" with the XP disk in the drive.
I tried several optical drives and got the same issue with all of them.
I then hooked a USB optical drive up and it wouldn't boot from it.
I removed the internal optical drive and the system then booted from the USB drive and loaded Windows fine.
I just assumed it was a fluke and once Windows was done loading I removed the USB drive, installed the factory internal optical again and turned it on...
"No operating system found".
This is where I'm stuck. If I remove the optical the system boots into Windows fine. There were no issues like this with the other hard drive.
I have tried setting the hard drive as Master, Slave, and Cable Select with no change.
Laptop has the newest BIOS.
Samsung does not offer firmware updates on their hard drives.
i have a Acer 5310, and i need to improve the graphics score in vista.
it sits on 3.0 i have installed latest drivers etc...
can i swap the GPU or just do some tweaks?
So simply i guess my question is:
1. is it the hardware reached its limits?
2. is it the software/drivers need tweaking?
i would like to be able to play GTA IV,
I have a question about my dell Inspiron N4030 A05. am thinking about buying new pieces for my PC.
But I don't know exactly the amount RAM my laptop can expandAs mentioned at subject, i want to install more RAM for my laptop (up to 8GB or more) and i wold like to buy 1TB hard driver but i don't know he will work with my computer.
What is the maximum memory my laptop can install and so that for the hard driver ?
Here is my laptop specification
Brand name: DELL Inspiron N4030
cpu: 2,13 gigahertz Intel Pentium
Installed RAM: 2GB
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 (build 7601)
I originally purchased my E1705 with a 60GB 7200RPM drive. I believe at the time it was mainly to save a few bucks and that the largest 7200RPM available may have been around 120GB and added $200 to the price of the machine.
I am constantly finding myself uninstalling applications and looking for things to delete to save space on this tiny little drive, it has gotten to the point that it is a hassle. I recently moved my music library to an external USB drive to free up about 20GB only to fill it again right away by installing Visual Studio 2008 and the MSDN Library.
I need more drive space!
I know there are a ton of options out there for drives which I can easily swap right into this machine but I am having a tough time trying to decide if I am willing to sacrifice the added speed of a 7200RPM drive for the additional space offered by the largest of the 2.5" drives.
I use this machine for everything, it is my primary computer so having the fastest available options is desirable. I frequently render digital video for the creation of DVDs and believe it or not I perform this function currently on external USB drives because of the space issues. Having th space to move this to the primary drive with the full speed interface will be a big plus.
I am looking at buying the Z690/790 with the SSD RAID configuration and was looking for more information on the size and interfaces of the SSDs used in RAID configuration.
a. Are they 2.5" inch drives or 1.8" inch drives?
b. Do they have SATA interface or some other interface
The laptop is now 2 months old. I deleted all the games, but there is alot left over. After years of admin work on Win2k, and nothing comparable on Vista, I need advice on what I can safely delete and what I may, sooner or later, need.
Here is a list. Let me know what I can and should not delete. I know I have a factory default in a hidden partition. And note that once I delete something, further backups will be made without that software.
1) Welcome Center (Would be nice to get rid of for all users. But I am the only user on this system for the foreseeable future)
2) Windows Media Center - I may back up an audio CD or convert audio to WMA, I may make a back up of my DVDs, but I don't play CD's or DVDs.
3) Windows Photo Gallery. This is actually nice software, but the camera comes with its own, and I play any video CDs in my DVD player.
4) Extras and Upgrades - Anytime Upgrade, Marketplace, Windows Web Site. Beyond purchasing software, why would I use this?
5) Windows DVD maker - Does the Acer backup software use this? I'm still very happy with Nero, and this doesn't seem easy to use.
6) Windows Movie Maker - I don't have a video camera to make movies with, and no inclination to make any at all. I suffered through my father's home movies. - Never again.
7) Live Messenger Download. - I'm not an online chatterer. What else would I need this for? IS this needed by Live Meeting?
8) Windows Meeting Space - I would use this very rarely if at all, and certainly not in the foreseeable future. Live meeting would NOT need this as I understand.
9) Windows Sidebar - From what I read about it, it doesn't seem needed. Aren't shortcuts the same?
10) Table PC - This isn't a tablet PC. But I like the fact that the right side of the touch-pad acts as a scrolling device. Is Tablet PC needed for that?
Assuming I do upgrade to a larger hard drive, any suggestions on the most "painless" way of doing this, considering what is on my current drive?
View 14 Replies View Relatedhard drive makes a VERY loud clicking sound every 4-10 minutes no matter what I do. I've contacted Acer and they told me it would take 10-14 days plus shipping both ways (which I would have to pay for) to fix it under warranty.
I've tried looking up any sort of Free Fall technologies, whatever they might be named.
What I found out is that I have a Seagate Momentus HDD inside my machine. Is there anything I can do about the hard drive myself (i.e. disabling the Free Fall) or do I just send it in?
Now that I've explained the problem, I'll explain why I'm not willing to send it in.
I am a full-time college student (18 credit hours!) so needless to say, I NEED this laptop! Which is why I am very hesitant to part with it.
It hasn't been out of the house in the 6 weeks I've had it. It's been on a desk. (I've checked the desk for level, and it checks out A-OK).

View 10 Replies View Relatedgot my AS6930 from Tiger in. It does have 2nd hard drive bay as i though and has the sata connection. The problem is that there is no bracket to hold the drive in place and also the bay cover has 2 prongs that prevent a 2nd hard drive. I have tried finding the spare parts so that I can interchange and install but looks hopeless unless someone knows who I can order parts through in the states. my other option is to basically come up with my own way to secure the drive. Right now I would have to take a dremel to the 2 prongs (plastic) and sand then down just enough to where they contact the bottom of the new installed drive rather than bottom of the bay. 2nd would be find some type of material that I could use to place between the hard drive and the side of the bay to keep it from coming loose.

Is there 2 slots for another hard drive? If so is it easy to open it up to put another in?
Another question is, I have 4gb ram but it seems 1GB is being shared for the video memory, it already has 512mb dedicated which is plenty for me (its the 9600GT card), how do I unshare it? There seems to be no option at all in the bios.

Now I am given the choices to
1.Restore system factory default.
2.(Which is grayed out and option not avaialable) Restore form users backup
3.Recover from CD/DVD
4.Reinstall applaications/drivers.
So I pick 1. Restore system factory default.
Next I am asked for the empowering technology password. Well I don't have it and don't know how to get it. I would choose number 2. if it were an option. If I place the disk I made into the CD/DVD unit will the option become available? I tried option 3. and it said to place the restore disk inthe drive.
