Acer :: CPU Upgrade Aspire 7720
Apr 9, 2010
I been looking to upgrade my CPU and would like to know what is the fastest (MHz and cores) CPU that my 7720 can use? I am looking at the q9900 or extreme quad core socket p CPU to up grade to. Yes I get my jollies off of stressing the maxium capabilities out of a laptop. I have a Acer Aspire 7720-6556 or somthing close with intel core2 1.66 with 17in LCD and 2 500 western digital scorpion blue harddrives using MS Vista for OS with 2 gig of ram BIOS 1.45. Whew! I've tried windows 7 poor support for intel video and ram and no ir drivers. Oh back to the point, I am looking for to find out if this laptop will support quad core tech and what is the fastest CPU that BIOS ver. 1.45 will allow,

My aspire is as per topic title a 7720 T7300 (2.0ghz ,800mhz FSB , 4mb L2 cache)
I am running a recent Bios flash so up to 1.43 spec.
Is a CPU upgrade to a T9300...simple just a case of processor pull and new CPU refit?
Will it be of benefit or worthwhile in the firstplace?
As i can get a Intel®Core™2DuoMobile Processor T9300/2.5GHz/800MHz/6MB

i have done a search but cant find exactly the answer i need..
my Acer aspire is a 7720 T7300
it came with 2gb of ddr2 ram ( 2 banks of 1gb)
i recently upgraded to 4gb
the pc knows it is there but only appears to recognise 3gb?
is this a vista os ram limit issue or is there anything i can do to get the laptop to recognise all 4gb's?

I purchased this model because of the right balance of power, memory, storage space, and battery life. The great video card was a factor as well. The reviews I've heard about Acer's commercial technology were just great so I had no worries about taking a chance with a company that I'd never owned a computer from before. Turned out to be one of the best computers I've ever owned!

I purchased my Acer in Dec of 2007. It's worked great except it's overheating problem (got a fan, no more problem). Last month it started intermitently not booting properly, and not coming out of sleep. I "fixed" the sleep problem by telling Vista not to put it to sleep any more. I typically shut it down when I'm finished with it so sleep wasn't an issue for me.
To ellaborate on the booting problem. If I attempt to boot it, the display turns on, and power button turns green, but neither the fan, nor Drive turn on, nor do any of the USB ports get power (I know this because I have an illuminated keyboard, which doesn't illuminate when this problem is occuring). I've waited for as long as an hour and it will never boot. If I hold down the power button for 4 seconds, it turns off. And if I boot it again it boots up properly. Doesn't matter how many times I reboot it after it always comes back up. I've never tested how much time passes before I can't boot it. I also tryed putting it in hibernation manually, that worked twice, the last time it wouldn't wake and had to be rebooted. I've done a check disk on it but all seems fine.

I've uploaded my referenced screen grabs here since I ran into difficulties last night. This seemed like the logical solution.
I bought the Acer Aspire 7720-6395 yesterday. I couldn't find any reviews other than those on Best Buy's website (a couple are okay, but none comprehensive), so I hope to contribute to anyone else who might be considering it but unsure. I live an hour from the nearest big city, so any additional details would've made it easier to make the drive.
Forgive me if there are details you don't need or none that you do. I'll do my best.
I won't repeat the specs that Best Buy gives on their website, but I'll shed light on a couple that aren't clear through writing or screen grabs.
It seems that a number of people bought it thinking it had a Blu-Ray writer (BB had something on their site saying so, apparently), but be sure you note that it is only a Blu-Ray ROM drive. I say only...
Oh, and it is also a dual layer DVD writer and CD writer.
It has an integrated webcam and microphone if you're prone to video chatting.
The speakers are in a strip directly under the power and accessory buttons. It boasts "DOLBY DIGITAL LIVE" above the mesh, but they sound like most other decent laptop speakers. Not great, but pretty good all things considered.......................

Acer Aspire 7720 I've got. Basically it has both the common boot-up freeze and crackly/distorted sound problems that appear to be common. I understand that the best, albeit riskiest, way to solve these is to flash the bios to a more recent version, which I am prepared to do.
However - the bios upgrades are not available from Acer's own support site, and I don't know where else I can find them, and I have tried.... Is there anyone who can help me locate them? The problems with this laptop are driving me spare, and I really can't afford another, or even another motherboard, just yet.

I've had this aspire 7720-6381 for about a week and a half now. I've been very satisfied, and have even been content with the mediocre laptop speakers it contains. I wasn't expecting much in that realm anyways.
The problem I have is that periodically the speakers will make an annoying clicking noise. It's pretty sucky. Even worse, after a time all sound will screw up and a deathly fuzzy roaring sound is all that is heard.

I was concerned about slow page loading speeds with this new laptop. I had done comparisons with this new laptop and my Toshiba satellite A70, 2.8Ghz Celery, 768MB RAM, Realtec RTL8/810x family Fast Ethenet NIC.
I was concerned enough that I booked a call with an ISP tech who was here today. He tried several download tests with a test site provided by the company and found that the new laptop was download/transfering data at around 200-400Kb/sec while the old laptop was getting download speeds of 1.6Mb/sec.
The AV programs and firewalls were disabled for each of the tests. Tried updating the driver on the new laptop but it had the newest driver available.
I deleted the driver and rebooted with no better results. I have an email out to Acer as of an hour or so ago and am awaiting a response from their tech.
I believe that there is a bad ethernet card/circuit in this laptop.

My battery has not held more than about a 45-second charge since 2009; however, the AC adaptor seems to work fine, and the Power Management icon always tells me that I have a full (i.e., about 45-second) charge and that the AC adaptor is plugged in.  Today, just after I disabled the Acer Tour Reminder, CyberLink PlayMovie, and Microsoft Office OneNote (because I never use them and I wanted a faster startup), I moved some program icons that I didn't need or that were already on my Quick Launch tool bar into the Recycle Bin.  Suddenly, the notebook make sort of an electronic squeaking sound and immediately shut down--black screen; no lights. Â
Â
I unplugged it, checked to ensure the battery was properly seated, felt to make sure it did not feel hot anywhere, plugged it in, saw that the lights were showing on the adaptor and on the front left edge of the notebook, turned it on, and selected normal start; it started up again.  It ran for at least three minutes (which, because of the battery, it would not unless the AC adaptor was functioning) and then, after I moved a few more icons to the Recycle Bin, it suddenly shut down again in the same manner. Â
Â
I started it again and it has now been running long enough for me to look up my Acer Forum registration information and update it after resetting my password. Â I am writing this on another notebook. Â The Acer is still running, but I want to ensure it doesn't shut down on me when I am in the middle of a project.

Right now my Aspire one only has 1GB of RAM, which I guess is enough but 1.5GB won't hurt it at all. I was curious about the size and speed.
IF I bought a 2GB stick of RAM would it be regocnized? Also If I bought 800 MHz RAM what would it be clocked down to? Right now it's running at 533 Mhz I think, but CPU-Z is saying it's PC-5300 RAM. CPU-Z also says that I have one empty slot? What's that about? I thought that the Aspire One has 512MB built in and had one slot for a stick of RAM? Any ideas about CPU-Z is saying?
As all of you folks know, nearly every netbook has the GMA 950. The Aspire One is no exception to this. My One's BIOS will not let me choose the amount of RAM it's using for graphics. It says 8MB in a greyed out form. This means it's adaptive though because I can play AOE3 on it which requires 64MB. How can I choose how much RAM it uses?

This is my current laptop:
Acer Aspire 6930G
T5800
4 GB RAM
500 GB 7200 RPM
9600M GS
I've upgraded my HDD recently and now have a spare. I've though about adding in a second one into the second bay but those two legs are in the way. Has anyone found a distributor for the hard drive bay door that allows a second HDD or can anyone who has shaved off the legs tell me how much would be a safe length to shave off and what tool would be best for the job.
I've also considered getting a T9900 online (after being put down that it can't support quad cores) and I'm wondering if anyone has successfully installed a T9900 into a Aspire 6930 or 6930G. It sounds fine theoretically but I'm not sure if the CPU would fry my motherboard or not without proper BIOS support. My BIOS is currently on version 3204 and for odd reason, Windows says I have no administrative privileges when I try to phlash it, so I haven't been able to phlash it to version 3236. If I can upgrade it to a T9900, I'm wondering if anyone who has done it before can make a short guide. I remember lucino mentioning that it is more difficult than most laptops.
I've also read on the forums somewhere on a post by aditya900 that the 6930G can supposedly support more than 4 GB of RAM, has anyone verified this? Since messing with video rendering programs and hosting GMod servers tend to use up a lot of RAM, I'm very interested in sticking in a 4 GB stick to get 6 GB.
I'm also interested in getting a ATI 4670 if it does come out in the MXM-II factor or the GT 130M or whatever is the most powerful at the time . I've cracked open the case and the video card is right at the top next to the removable plate.. I'm hoping that you can just slide out the card or do you have to disassemble the case and remove the motherboard in order to upgrade the video card. I'm really hoping it's not the latter. I am wondering if anyone has done this before......................

how to change the CPU (the GPU is easy) in 6930G.
This is a vague guide and quite clumsy so I have no responsibility whatsoever if you damage your laptop or you lose your data or anything bad happens to your laptop or you etc.
I have to mention though that there is another guide written by lucino but unfortunately he hasn’t finished it and there are no photos. His guide looks more appropriate and safer than mine which is a bit risky but much quicker. Here is the link. lucino's guide
I am not sure if there is an update or if he is planning to include photos and finish the guide.
You will need a cross-head screwdriver around 3.0mm (you don’t say!!!) but also a flat one
Please use some kind of protection from ESD (electrostatic discharge) like an antistatic or grounding strap or gloves. This will prevent the static sensitive components from being ruined (memory, video card, motherboard etc).
Sometimes I don’t use it but I know how to discharge myself (i.e. by touching a metallic surface) before touching the laptop........................

I am using this machine over a year, its ok. I am working animation, compositing, sound design and music. So i want to make some changes on this pc.I need some recommendations, ideas about these:
1)I m using 2gb of ram and i want to max this to 4 gb. Is there any specific brand that you can say "good" and i also wonder how much mhz use max, recently i m using 667 and i want to buy what ddr2 offers max if there is no any adaptation issue.
2)I also need a 7200rpm harddisk. But i know nothing about laptop hdds. I m thinking for the best hdd as possible. But, i dont know what hdds are avalible for this Acer model, or is it not necessary something like that.
3) Finally, I ve created an Acer backup DVD, i wonder how easy to setup the computer if i change the hdd? I mean is it going to be licensed and free of problems like before.I used recovery once before, but with Empowering T software. Never did with a DVD.

i am considering an upgrade of my cpu but am not sure wich cpu to buy. Either T9600 or P9600. I know P9600 works cooler and consumes less power, but i dont actualy know how much lower it's performance is. (got my information here and some on intel's website)
My current config is:
Intel Core2Duo P7350 2.0ghz
Geforce 9600M GS 512mb DDR2
3gigs ddr2 ram.
I'd like to increase the gaming performance mostly, so is the cpu upgrade worth it considering the cost?

Recently I had a little upgrade adventure of my Aspire 7720G, replaced the nV 8400M GS with 9600M GT 512MB, added 4GB DDR2 @ 667MHz, and then I decided to upgrade the CPU also. I was thinking about T9500 for a long time, then I came across Intel's X9000 CPU (OEM, not the ES). I installed it, BIOS recognized it, Windows also (Win 7 Ultimate x64), but then I noticed something strange. It works only at 1.2GHz, in idle and in 100% load, when it should be at 2.8GHz. I tried my luck with power schemes, I have the latest BIOS, updated drivers and no change at all. CPU-Z reports it works at 1.2GHz all the time with a multiplier x6, it should be at x14. RMClock didn't help me at all, CPUgenie also. Old CPU was T7300, it was also working at 1.2GHz with multiplier x6 in idle but in 100% load the multiplier jumped to x10 and it worked at full speed; 2GHz. Windows Experience Index with T7300 was 5.1, for X9000 is 3.9!

I recently replaced the T5550 cpu in my Aspire 5920 with a T9500 (SLAYX). I bought the T9500 on E-bay as new, SLAYX, installed it and it works fine. Two different programs (CPU-Z and PC Wizard 2008 identify this processor as a T9500 (ES). The cpu had the SLAYX marking on the top. Is it possible I bought an engineering sample cleverly disguised as SLAYX?

Considering an Aspire One right now because it is less expensive than the others. I have a 512MB RAM (DDR2-PC5300) and 80GB 2.5" SATA HDD from my Thinkpad (which I upgraded both). So, I think maybe I could buy the Aspire One the cheapest version (8GB I guess).
So, is it can be done? I know that there is SATA version of the Aspire One but not sure the connector will be there in the SSD version. Try to google it but found only SSD upgrade....

I read a great review on the 1410 and decided to buy it. Been very happy with it, but discovered that it was the Celeron 743 and not the Core 2 Solo. I didn't realize that until I bought it from Newegg; just thought there was only one CPU offered.
So, my question is, can I upgrade the CPU? If so, what CPUs can I use and has anyone taken an 1410/1810 apart and posted pics or a guide?
