I've uploaded my referenced screen grabs here since I ran into difficulties last night. This seemed like the logical solution.
I bought the Acer Aspire 7720-6395 yesterday. I couldn't find any reviews other than those on Best Buy's website (a couple are okay, but none comprehensive), so I hope to contribute to anyone else who might be considering it but unsure. I live an hour from the nearest big city, so any additional details would've made it easier to make the drive.
Forgive me if there are details you don't need or none that you do. I'll do my best.
I won't repeat the specs that Best Buy gives on their website, but I'll shed light on a couple that aren't clear through writing or screen grabs.
It seems that a number of people bought it thinking it had a Blu-Ray writer (BB had something on their site saying so, apparently), but be sure you note that it is only a Blu-Ray ROM drive. I say only...
Oh, and it is also a dual layer DVD writer and CD writer.
It has an integrated webcam and microphone if you're prone to video chatting.
The speakers are in a strip directly under the power and accessory buttons. It boasts "DOLBY DIGITAL LIVE" above the mesh, but they sound like most other decent laptop speakers. Not great, but pretty good all things considered.......................
I purchased my Acer in Dec of 2007. It's worked great except it's overheating problem (got a fan, no more problem). Last month it started intermitently not booting properly, and not coming out of sleep. I "fixed" the sleep problem by telling Vista not to put it to sleep any more. I typically shut it down when I'm finished with it so sleep wasn't an issue for me.
To ellaborate on the booting problem. If I attempt to boot it, the display turns on, and power button turns green, but neither the fan, nor Drive turn on, nor do any of the USB ports get power (I know this because I have an illuminated keyboard, which doesn't illuminate when this problem is occuring). I've waited for as long as an hour and it will never boot. If I hold down the power button for 4 seconds, it turns off. And if I boot it again it boots up properly. Doesn't matter how many times I reboot it after it always comes back up. I've never tested how much time passes before I can't boot it. I also tryed putting it in hibernation manually, that worked twice, the last time it wouldn't wake and had to be rebooted. I've done a check disk on it but all seems fine.
I've been looking all over to find out whether or not I can fit a drive (such as the WD10TPVT) with a height of 12.5mm in the AS5740G.
I've got a need to store a lot of data on the laptop, so the speed of the drive isn't as big of a concern (though I'd kill for a 1TB drive with 7200RPM; bonus points if it ran quiet).
Has anyone tried to upgrade their stock HDD with one of these as of yet?
i have done a search but cant find exactly the answer i need..
my Acer aspire is a 7720 T7300 it came with 2gb of ddr2 ram ( 2 banks of 1gb)
i recently upgraded to 4gb
the pc knows it is there but only appears to recognise 3gb? is this a vista os ram limit issue or is there anything i can do to get the laptop to recognise all 4gb's?
Ive had my aspire 7720 for about a month now, and just recently i has started to overheat. i cant get 5 mins into a video without it overheating and turning off. I bought a cooling pad but it really hasnt made much difference.
I purchased this model because of the right balance of power, memory, storage space, and battery life. The great video card was a factor as well. The reviews I've heard about Acer's commercial technology were just great so I had no worries about taking a chance with a company that I'd never owned a computer from before. Turned out to be one of the best computers I've ever owned!

I been looking to upgrade my CPU and would like to know what is the fastest (MHz and cores) CPU that my 7720 can use? I am looking at the q9900 or extreme quad core socket p CPU to up grade to. Yes I get my jollies off of stressing the maxium capabilities out of a laptop. I have a Acer Aspire 7720-6556 or somthing close with intel core2 1.66 with 17in LCD and 2 500 western digital scorpion blue harddrives using MS Vista for OS with 2 gig of ram BIOS 1.45. Whew! I've tried windows 7 poor support for intel video and ram and no ir drivers. Oh back to the point, I am looking for to find out if this laptop will support quad core tech and what is the fastest CPU that BIOS ver. 1.45 will allow,
Acer Aspire 7720 I've got. Basically it has both the common boot-up freeze and crackly/distorted sound problems that appear to be common. I understand that the best, albeit riskiest, way to solve these is to flash the bios to a more recent version, which I am prepared to do.
However - the bios upgrades are not available from Acer's own support site, and I don't know where else I can find them, and I have tried.... Is there anyone who can help me locate them? The problems with this laptop are driving me spare, and I really can't afford another, or even another motherboard, just yet.
I've had this aspire 7720-6381 for about a week and a half now. I've been very satisfied, and have even been content with the mediocre laptop speakers it contains. I wasn't expecting much in that realm anyways.
The problem I have is that periodically the speakers will make an annoying clicking noise. It's pretty sucky. Even worse, after a time all sound will screw up and a deathly fuzzy roaring sound is all that is heard.
I was concerned about slow page loading speeds with this new laptop. I had done comparisons with this new laptop and my Toshiba satellite A70, 2.8Ghz Celery, 768MB RAM, Realtec RTL8/810x family Fast Ethenet NIC.
I was concerned enough that I booked a call with an ISP tech who was here today. He tried several download tests with a test site provided by the company and found that the new laptop was download/transfering data at around 200-400Kb/sec while the old laptop was getting download speeds of 1.6Mb/sec.
The AV programs and firewalls were disabled for each of the tests. Tried updating the driver on the new laptop but it had the newest driver available.
I deleted the driver and rebooted with no better results. I have an email out to Acer as of an hour or so ago and am awaiting a response from their tech.
I believe that there is a bad ethernet card/circuit in this laptop.
Hey folks. I wrote a review for The Acer Guy back when I first bought my laptop (Aspire 6920-6621), but it's time for an update. (Link to my original review [url] Here's some basic specs: Windows Vista Home Premium Two 140gig HD's 1.83GhZ Dual Core Intel Processor 3gig RAM And some dinky graphics chip.
Well, after two years, I have to say it has held up but not as well as I think it should have.
A few months after writing my first review, I had to send my Laptop to Acer. Admittedly, the customer support was fantastic. They took care of me.
HOWEVER, I'm not pleased with how my computer came back. It wasn't put back together, and I didn't want to send it back to them again.
Regardless, the build quality is a bit iffy. Not sure if other people have had this issue, but cracks are forming in several places. The first time I sent the computer back, it was because of cracks on the bezel. They replaced it, but after a few months the cracks came back. There is also a crack on the bottom cover.
Keyboard flex is there but not too severe.
When I was dusting my keyboard, the sharp end of the spacebar snapped off, so now a good few mm's are missing. I sanded it down and it looks fine, but still.
The express card placeholder doesn't stay in well, in fact, if you aren't careful, the thing will come out.
In terms of performance, it's still holding up. I've not had any problems with Vista, and I game as well as code. Steam has given me a few C++ errors, but meh.
Audio quality is acceptable. The left speaker is crackling and the "subwoofer" adds a nice effect, but overall it's disappointing. Should be better for all the hype.
Screen quality is actually pretty good, much better than most computers I've used. The only thing that I've used that compares is a Mac.
I had seen these and similar units available for some time. The Acer models caught my attention the first time I came across them browsing through hardware for an order I was placing. They are sleek netbooks with a nice clean paint job resembling a showroom sports car. Ultra portable, thin and lite, these are the best balance of functionality and extreme mobility.
Like I said in my introduction I had seen these online for some time but never bought one. I thought they looked attractive but doubted there efficiency for office use. I didn't want to spend $300+ on something I wasn't sure could meet my needs. I had used a HP mini and hated it. Found the screen too small and unstable. Noticed some flickering with the HP units that turned me off from the netbook PCs. However something about the Acer units kept me curious.
The wife must have noticed how curious I had grown, and surprised me with one for Valentines Day. This was the best gift I could have gotten. This PC is awesome and totally destroyed my skepticism.............................

I sent my Acer Aspire 4315 notebook to their repair center in Texas. I had a problem with the jack input for the power. It wasn't responding and found out that it was broken (Update: it wasn't actually broken it just felt very loose to the point were it might break). Also the left corner of the notebook was loose. In order to send in your notebook you have to use there online acer depot repair request system. So I sent it in using UPS ground which cost me $40. After 3 days I received and email saying it was received. 2 days later I receive another email saying it was fixed and will be shipped back using Fedex. Then 4 days later when I got home I received a "door tag" saying i wasn't there to pick up the package and sign for it. It came at 11:30 A.M and I get home a 4:00 P.M. So obviously I couldn't sign for it. Because of this problem I called and requested that they ship it after 4:00. They said they can ask the driver but it doesn't guarantee that will be shipped at the time you requested. So the next I come home I get another "door tag" saying I missed my package the second time. This time I asked them to leave it at there facility and let me pick it up. They said I would have to wait until tommorow to get my package. Tommorow arrives and I pick it up. Finally I have my notebook. I now drive back and open up the box. It came with a paper saying it was fixed. So I now get my AC adapter to plug it in. And guess what? They didn't fix the problem. I carefully looked at the paper and it said that they fixed problem stated which in there mind was the loose left corner of my notebook. WTF? They didn't even bother to fixed the important problem, the POWER JACK! That's horrible service! I then call them saying they didn't fix the problem. after being transferred 5 YES 5 TIMES! The support person said they will pay for the shipping to send it back. Which means that I will have to wait even more to get it back AGAIN and actually have it fixed. The only good part about it being shipped back is that they are going to use Fedex priority overnight. WOW WHAT A TREAT!
UPDATE: I havn't shipped the laptop back. I was about to until I decided to take one last "explore" inside of it. I found out that the power jack wasn't directly attached to the motherboard, just a wire leading to it. So with a little superglue or epoxy it would be fixed. Now that I know what to do. There will be no need to send it back and wait another horrible week!
I am a big Asus g-series fan since getting a g51vx-a1 gaming laptop needless to say i sold it and have a g73 on preorder and an m11x due both next month. In the meantime they keep pushing EDD on both so I need to game right? and since I sold my beloved G51 (early Feb) and was currently using either a vaio fz470 OR an asus f3sv to game. I wasn't happy with the results i was getting raidwise in WoW ,basically all settings set to low
I looked around for a cheap laptop with these specifications:
better than average cpu, gpu with dx11 support, HDMI and cheap
I looked at other offerings from Asus but many i was looking at N61/N71 were also on pre-order sad times indeed.
surfing the local comp store web I decided to search for something with the ati 5650 which i read got great reviews for gaming. up pops the 5740 and its big brother 7740 since i wanted cheap i opted for the 5470:
Hello every one, I am interested on the Acer Aspire AS5532 that is currently on sale at bestbuy, it have a single core AMD Athlon 54 1.6, with ATI video card, and also I am looking at the Acer 5517 from staples which have a 2ghz Turion II
I have used HP computers for the last 6 years and never owned an Acer, I know first hand that Acer quality wasnt the best a few years ago as I had to troubleshoot and fix my friend's Acer while in college, but now that my HP died I need a cheap and reliable laptop for the mean time. So I will like to know user experince with this models and if there is a review since I have search the forum and Cnet and theres is none.

My battery has not held more than about a 45-second charge since 2009; however, the AC adaptor seems to work fine, and the Power Management icon always tells me that I have a full (i.e., about 45-second) charge and that the AC adaptor is plugged in.  Today, just after I disabled the Acer Tour Reminder, CyberLink PlayMovie, and Microsoft Office OneNote (because I never use them and I wanted a faster startup), I moved some program icons that I didn't need or that were already on my Quick Launch tool bar into the Recycle Bin.  Suddenly, the notebook make sort of an electronic squeaking sound and immediately shut down--black screen; no lights.   I unplugged it, checked to ensure the battery was properly seated, felt to make sure it did not feel hot anywhere, plugged it in, saw that the lights were showing on the adaptor and on the front left edge of the notebook, turned it on, and selected normal start; it started up again.  It ran for at least three minutes (which, because of the battery, it would not unless the AC adaptor was functioning) and then, after I moved a few more icons to the Recycle Bin, it suddenly shut down again in the same manner.   I started it again and it has now been running long enough for me to look up my Acer Forum registration information and update it after resetting my password.  I am writing this on another notebook.  The Acer is still running, but I want to ensure it doesn't shut down on me when I am in the middle of a project.
I just bought a Acer 7720-6398 and I'm wondering if and how I can upgrade the video card and processor (eventually). This is my first notebook and I don't know much about the upgradable aspects of the machine.
I have downed to XP and everything seems to be fine. All standard functions work A-OK!
The MOTU audio drivers are loaded (same drivers I use on my desktop PC) and viewable via the CONTROL panel in the SOUNDS section. I get absolutely NO Windows sounds at all. If I change back to the REALTEK, it works just fine.
I have added an ExpressCard Firewire card for the MOTU interface and it uses the T.I. chipset that MOTU advised me to use. Yep, I am using the same cable that I use on my desktop PC.
I was also advised to disable the RealTek sound in the BIOS, but when I accessed the BIOS I found there is NO system settings tab at all. I have also been told to uninstall the integrated Firewire port via the BIOS. What gives here?
I have used the SYSTEM/DEVICE MGR/ to "disable" most every item listed (one-at-a-time) then tried the sound test again, but nothing has helped.
So, my current plan is to flash the BIOS to 1.43, it is currently 1.44 InSydeH2O v3.0.
So, I am not sure if I can use the 1.43 Bios code.
I have been looking for Acer 7720 hotkey drivers but in vain. Can a good soul direct me to an appropriate place to look in? I've looked on Acer's driver download page but it doesn't list anything regarding hotkeys. Btw I'm running windows 7 (if you can find a driver for vista, it'll do).
It seems Acer has disabled the Intel-VT support for the Acer 7720 in the BIOS. I;ve installed the 1.43 version of the BIOS, but no difference.
I;ve created a support request with Acer to ask them for enabling this option, which makes it possible to run an hypervisor like xen, kvm or hyper-v. At this moment it does not seem possible to run these. This would enable us to have almost native virtualisation of several OS's.
But my Real issue is the AHCI Drivers for XP x64. I am trying to slipstream the AHCI Drivers into my x64 disk using nLite and I amhaving a Hard time finding the Drivers.
I found these: downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProductID=1809&DwnldID=14794&strOSs=109&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional%20x64%20Edition&lang=eng
but they are .exe and I have no way to load them.....................
I have an Acer 7720-6604 notebook. For Power Settings I usually keep it on "High Performance" when plugged in (I'm usually gaming). I've found that when I unplug it with this setting, it acts like it's on "Power Saver" mode, which equals a big drop in frame rates when I game. I checked out event viewer and it shows this message as associated:
"Event 2, Kernel-Processor-Power
Performance power management features on processor 1 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware."
I've looked all over and can't find any way to fix this problem. I really haven't seen anyone else have the problem actually. It's bad though because it really makes games unplayable and shouldn't be happening on a relatively new laptop (bought it only about a year ago). I don't know what firmware I need to update or what I need to do if that's not it.
I did uninstall all of the empowering technology programs, including epower management. I'm not sure if it's related... I thought it was just a power scheming tool and windows has it's own in the control panel anyways.
Someone please help. I don't want to have to format or send it in for repairs if I can help it. Acer has an expensive repair fee (so I hear). I will format if I have to but I don't know that it will fix anything.
i jsut DL'd the CL50134_Winflash.zip from acers website to try and fix some issues i've found this can fix, i extracted it, shutdown all apps i could, hit start or run and up popped an error message.. system froze... sat there for about 30+ min (i was freakin the whole time) and nothing didn't move.. didn't budge... my screen saver popped on but before that it hadn't moved an inch... can't toggle capslock or numlock.. can't even get rid of the screen saver now.... i shut the system down (the bad way) and now nothing.. can't get it to turn on at all....
It runs like XP with 256MB of memory and this system has 3GB's. The HDD's on this are large WD 160's at 5400rpm, so it cant be them.
I have disable Aero and gotten rid of (uninstalled) the 90day trial Norton.
I am running AVG Free for an AV. Ultimate is a 64bit system
Just opening a new site in IE takes on the average of 15secs or so and initial start up, seems to take forever.
I have went into power management and amended the screen to never turn off and also the HDD's to never turn off.
Before I did this, it went into some sort of sleep/hibernation mode and couldnt figure out how to wake it. I tried using the "sleep mode" at Start>Sleep and it went into sleep fine but when pushing the Power button to re-awaken, I waited about 5 mins and it still didnt awake.
