Acer :: 7720 BIOS & No Sound
Nov 25, 2008
I have downed to XP and everything seems to be fine. All standard functions work A-OK!
The MOTU audio drivers are loaded (same drivers I use on my desktop PC) and viewable via the CONTROL panel in the SOUNDS section. I get absolutely NO Windows sounds at all. If I change back to the REALTEK, it works just fine.
I have added an ExpressCard Firewire card for the MOTU interface and it uses the T.I. chipset that MOTU advised me to use. Yep, I am using the same cable that I use on my desktop PC.
I was also advised to disable the RealTek sound in the BIOS, but when I accessed the BIOS I found there is NO system settings tab at all. I have also been told to uninstall the integrated Firewire port via the BIOS. What gives here?
I have used the SYSTEM/DEVICE MGR/ to "disable" most every item listed (one-at-a-time) then tried the sound test again, but nothing has helped.
So, my current plan is to flash the BIOS to 1.43, it is currently 1.44 InSydeH2O v3.0.
So, I am not sure if I can use the 1.43 Bios code.

Acer Aspire 7720 I've got. Basically it has both the common boot-up freeze and crackly/distorted sound problems that appear to be common. I understand that the best, albeit riskiest, way to solve these is to flash the bios to a more recent version, which I am prepared to do.
However - the bios upgrades are not available from Acer's own support site, and I don't know where else I can find them, and I have tried.... Is there anyone who can help me locate them? The problems with this laptop are driving me spare, and I really can't afford another, or even another motherboard, just yet.

I have been having numerous problems with the BIOS where it will not allow boot device additions, required two power-ups to boot W8, and finally today I can not even get into the BIOS A12 (latest) with F2 or F12. Pushing F2 and F12 was completely ignored by the BIOS as it would only boot W8, even though it worked fine until yesterday.  I finally had to pull the hard drive to get the BIOS to give up and let me in.Â
Seems to have a mind of its own but it did present the BIOS menu. I had no problem using F2 & F12 on BIOS versions A10, A11, A12 before today except A12 did delete all the boot device priorities when initially loaded a week ago. That glitch caused the two power-ups everyone is starting to see. The two power-ups are gone now but I need access occasionally for DVD's. Seems like there is some type of adaptive "smart" (I call it "dumb") strategy in the BIOS that really confuses us users to the point where I am wasting way too much time chasing phantoms.
The really big problem is that there are zero (none) Manuals with this computer. The maintenance disassembly manuals are even gone. No one has any write-up of how the BIOS is supposed to operate? Dell explain how this BIOS is to be used to add boot devices? Pulling HDD's is not the answer for most users as we are just going to wear out the HDD electrical bus connector when you want to boot a legacy MBR ( or an .ISO) DVD.
If you already have BIOS A10 installed. Version A10 was the last unlocked BIOS while  A11 and A12 are locked right up and very unpredictable in behaviour. Deleting A10 and the maintenance manuals from the download site is pretty vicious on Dells part in my mind. The maintenance manuals were called "Owners" or "User" Manuals of which the obvious intent was to cover up there are no real owners manual to explain the basics like the Function Keys to get into the BIOS and use it.Â

I've been expecting a problem recently; when I turn off/restart my Inspiron 7720 and I press F2 to load the BIOS, I notice the bar fills but it continues and loads windows normally. I tried updating the BIOS from A10 to the newest A12. If i press F12 for boot options it works fine, it's only when I press F2 for the BIOS.

I have a dell 7720 laptop, which I would like the Windows 7 install on a SSD msata. I set UEFI, everything is OK, it loads the installer, run the install halfway, and it's the first reboot, the BIOS can not find the half-installed Windows, and start over again ... I have tried everything, I have the BIOS is re-installed. Windows 8 is also doing the same.
The funny part about it the same way I did two months ago and everything was fine, the machine worked, I just wanted to make Windows 7 the next and 8 easyBCD replaced with the sequence, and then he died doing it every since.
Maybe this program (easyBCD) I reached into the BIOS to do a bios update bios reset and not restore? If you do not install uefi, but then a traditional HDD for no reason, and the SSD is not uefi does not work.
I think the BIOS is going to be something, because I see the following installation to set up the UEFI, and partition, but the BIOS does not recognize (ran half the installation and over again to start because UEFI boot is not displayed you installed.) If you set it that boot device is added, it will print that you can not find a file system, but if I turn off the traditional boot then you will find the first installed unfinished Windows, you add the boot list, and then I went to the BIOS settings, restart, and again, you do not see your operating system. (none of what I just set it boot list)....

I have an Inspiron 17R SE 7720 running Windows 7 64-bit Pro which has been working fine, but I was thinking about getting an mSata flash drive to cache the hard disk, and reading on this forum discovered that my A01 bios version wasn't up to the job, so tried to update the bios tonight.
I downloaded the 7720A12.exe from the Dell site but wanted to backup my bios first. Again searching this forum, I saw a post that said there was a backup option when running the exe. Wrong.
Running it from within windows it immediately said it was going to reboot (I wasn't given an option!). My laptop powered down as if doing a restart, but immediately hung.Â
There was nothing but blackness on the screen, no text, no beeps. It appeared to be stuck in a boot cycle, as the screen back light was coming on, and off, and on, and off etc, for 10 minutes straight.Â
I powered down and powered up and I get the dell logo and can enter the bios setup, but after that, no matter what I do, I get a dos based "BOOT MENU" with just these options on:
Network Boot <- does nothing except messes up the display of this menu Setup <- loads the bios settings Diagnostics <- runs a diagnostic program which tests the hardware and reports all tests pass Change boot mode setting <- does nothing except messes up the display of this menu
I can't get passed this menu.
I've tried booting from a DVD - both a Windows 7 installation disk, and the Dell recovery DVD I created when I first got the laptop, neither DVD boots, and apart from buzzing the DVD drive, don't have any effect at all.Â
Both disks have been tested in another Inspiron laptop I have, and I also set the boot priority order in the bios so that DVD is the first item in the list.
I've also tried a bootable USB stick, but no joy there either. The light on the stick shows it's being accessed, but I still end up at the Boot Menu above.

I have been looking for Acer 7720 hotkey drivers but in vain. Can a good soul direct me to an appropriate place to look in? I've looked on Acer's driver download page but it doesn't list anything regarding hotkeys. Btw I'm running windows 7 (if you can find a driver for vista, it'll do).

I purchased this model because of the right balance of power, memory, storage space, and battery life. The great video card was a factor as well. The reviews I've heard about Acer's commercial technology were just great so I had no worries about taking a chance with a company that I'd never owned a computer from before. Turned out to be one of the best computers I've ever owned!

It seems Acer has disabled the Intel-VT support for the Acer 7720 in the BIOS. I;ve installed the 1.43 version of the BIOS, but no difference.
I;ve created a support request with Acer to ask them for enabling this option, which makes it possible to run an hypervisor like xen, kvm or hyper-v. At this moment it does not seem possible to run these. This would enable us to have almost native virtualisation of several OS's.

I been looking to upgrade my CPU and would like to know what is the fastest (MHz and cores) CPU that my 7720 can use? I am looking at the q9900 or extreme quad core socket p CPU to up grade to. Yes I get my jollies off of stressing the maxium capabilities out of a laptop. I have a Acer Aspire 7720-6556 or somthing close with intel core2 1.66 with 17in LCD and 2 500 western digital scorpion blue harddrives using MS Vista for OS with 2 gig of ram BIOS 1.45. Whew! I've tried windows 7 poor support for intel video and ram and no ir drivers. Oh back to the point, I am looking for to find out if this laptop will support quad core tech and what is the fastest CPU that BIOS ver. 1.45 will allow,

I purchased my Acer in Dec of 2007. It's worked great except it's overheating problem (got a fan, no more problem). Last month it started intermitently not booting properly, and not coming out of sleep. I "fixed" the sleep problem by telling Vista not to put it to sleep any more. I typically shut it down when I'm finished with it so sleep wasn't an issue for me.
To ellaborate on the booting problem. If I attempt to boot it, the display turns on, and power button turns green, but neither the fan, nor Drive turn on, nor do any of the USB ports get power (I know this because I have an illuminated keyboard, which doesn't illuminate when this problem is occuring). I've waited for as long as an hour and it will never boot. If I hold down the power button for 4 seconds, it turns off. And if I boot it again it boots up properly. Doesn't matter how many times I reboot it after it always comes back up. I've never tested how much time passes before I can't boot it. I also tryed putting it in hibernation manually, that worked twice, the last time it wouldn't wake and had to be rebooted. I've done a check disk on it but all seems fine.

I have an Acer 7720-6604 notebook. For Power Settings I usually keep it on "High Performance" when plugged in (I'm usually gaming). I've found that when I unplug it with this setting, it acts like it's on "Power Saver" mode, which equals a big drop in frame rates when I game. I checked out event viewer and it shows this message as associated:
"Event 2, Kernel-Processor-Power
Performance power management features on processor 1 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware."
I've looked all over and can't find any way to fix this problem. I really haven't seen anyone else have the problem actually. It's bad though because it really makes games unplayable and shouldn't be happening on a relatively new laptop (bought it only about a year ago). I don't know what firmware I need to update or what I need to do if that's not it.
I did uninstall all of the empowering technology programs, including epower management. I'm not sure if it's related... I thought it was just a power scheming tool and windows has it's own in the control panel anyways.
Someone please help. I don't want to have to format or send it in for repairs if I can help it. Acer has an expensive repair fee (so I hear). I will format if I have to but I don't know that it will fix anything.

I've uploaded my referenced screen grabs here since I ran into difficulties last night. This seemed like the logical solution.
I bought the Acer Aspire 7720-6395 yesterday. I couldn't find any reviews other than those on Best Buy's website (a couple are okay, but none comprehensive), so I hope to contribute to anyone else who might be considering it but unsure. I live an hour from the nearest big city, so any additional details would've made it easier to make the drive.
Forgive me if there are details you don't need or none that you do. I'll do my best.
I won't repeat the specs that Best Buy gives on their website, but I'll shed light on a couple that aren't clear through writing or screen grabs.
It seems that a number of people bought it thinking it had a Blu-Ray writer (BB had something on their site saying so, apparently), but be sure you note that it is only a Blu-Ray ROM drive. I say only...
Oh, and it is also a dual layer DVD writer and CD writer.
It has an integrated webcam and microphone if you're prone to video chatting.
The speakers are in a strip directly under the power and accessory buttons. It boasts "DOLBY DIGITAL LIVE" above the mesh, but they sound like most other decent laptop speakers. Not great, but pretty good all things considered.......................

Is a CPU upgrade to a T9300...simple just a case of processor pull and new CPU refit?
Will it be of benefit or worthwhile in the firstplace?

I've had this aspire 7720-6381 for about a week and a half now. I've been very satisfied, and have even been content with the mediocre laptop speakers it contains. I wasn't expecting much in that realm anyways.
The problem I have is that periodically the speakers will make an annoying clicking noise. It's pretty sucky. Even worse, after a time all sound will screw up and a deathly fuzzy roaring sound is all that is heard.

It runs like XP with 256MB of memory and this system has 3GB's. The HDD's on this are large WD 160's at 5400rpm, so it cant be them.
I have disable Aero and gotten rid of (uninstalled) the 90day trial Norton.
I am running AVG Free for an AV. Ultimate is a 64bit system
Just opening a new site in IE takes on the average of 15secs or so and initial start up, seems to take forever.
I have went into power management and amended the screen to never turn off and also the HDD's to never turn off.
Before I did this, it went into some sort of sleep/hibernation mode and couldnt figure out how to wake it. I tried using the "sleep mode" at Start>Sleep and it went into sleep fine but when pushing the Power button to re-awaken, I waited about 5 mins and it still didnt awake.

after some heavy usage, my Acer Aspire 7720 laptop started to accept only ~92% of battery charge and never gets out of that.
Also, the battery LED flashes inconsistently (e.g. will stay on for a few minutes, then will blink wildly). I
I use Arch Linux as my main OS, but it seems to be platform-independent (even when it's turned off it happens). The BIOS is the latest 1.45.

I was concerned about slow page loading speeds with this new laptop. I had done comparisons with this new laptop and my Toshiba satellite A70, 2.8Ghz Celery, 768MB RAM, Realtec RTL8/810x family Fast Ethenet NIC.
I was concerned enough that I booked a call with an ISP tech who was here today. He tried several download tests with a test site provided by the company and found that the new laptop was download/transfering data at around 200-400Kb/sec while the old laptop was getting download speeds of 1.6Mb/sec.
The AV programs and firewalls were disabled for each of the tests. Tried updating the driver on the new laptop but it had the newest driver available.
I deleted the driver and rebooted with no better results. I have an email out to Acer as of an hour or so ago and am awaiting a response from their tech.
I believe that there is a bad ethernet card/circuit in this laptop.
